Andy Carter Vice President for Intercollegiate AthleticsAndyCarter is entering his seventh year as the Newberry College Director of Athletics, having joined the Newberry

family in September of 2002. Since taking the helm, Carter has spearheaded several projects in order to turn Newberry Athletics into one of the premier programs in Division II.

Carter came to Newberry after 17-year tenure at Missouri Baptist University. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree from the NAIA institution, he began his career as an admissions recruiter and assistant baseball coach while working on his master’s of business administration at Lindenwood University. His degree completion led him to a faculty position as an Instructor of Business Administration and Economics at Missouri Baptist, while at the same time serving the school as head baseball coach.

Carter took over as baseball coach in 1991 and during his nine seasons at the helm won seven consecutive conference championships. Seven years into a successful coaching career, he also took over as Missouri Baptist’s athletic director. He served in both roles for two years before leaving coaching in order to devote all his attention to administrative duties.

Almost immediately upon his arrival at Newberry, Carter presented the Board of Trustees with the “Newberry College Athletic Initiative”, a long-term plan to secure future athletic success, while maintaining Newberry’s excellent academic record for its athletics teams. Newberry has undergone an overhaul of its athletic program, instituting a stringent evalu-ation process for all varsity sports.

The results were almost immediate, as the athletic program nearly doubled South Atlantic Conference victories in consecutive years under Carter’s reign. Also, for the first time since 1999, Newberry enhanced its offering of varsity sports, adding wrestling and competitive cheerleading.

Academic achievement and student development are the cornerstones of the department. A growing student-athlete population (222 in 2002-03 up to 500 in 2007-08) have set the standard in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) by winning four of the past five GPA titles and have achieved a cumulative GPA as high as 3.01 (2007-2008). The College’s commitment, as evidenced by the implementation of our Mentoring Skills program, is to maintain this success for the future.

The student-athlete experience directly correlates to the relationship they have with their head coach. Annual evaluations and emphasis on desired results produced by the head coaches in the department aided in staff hiring and the development process. The success in hiring and developing all departmental staff (Coaches, administration, and staff) is directly correlated to the commitment shown by the College.

The tenure of our head coaches, each program’s win-loss records, and the quality of each incoming recruiting class provide a window of the varied levels of success that will continue blessing the College for years to come.

Facility enhancement has also been a major focal point for this administration. In the summer of 2006 a new Astro Turf football field was installed. This provided a state of the art field for practice and competition. The team responded by winning all 9 games played at Setzler Field, including our first ever NCAA DII post-season victory. Through the fall 2007 season, Newberry football has produced a 15-0 home record on the new turf.

The 2007-2008 academic year brought the Phase I completion of the first of three new facilities at the Smith Road Athletic Complex with the completion of the Baseball facility. This facility will be the proud home for Newberry baseball for years to come and will provide a great opportu-nity to engage our community. The other facilities slated for the Smith Road Complex are new Softball and Soccer facilities. Also, the Newberry basketball and volleyball teams began playing last season on a new finished gym floor, powered by a brand new, state-of-the art lighting system.

Future plans include new facilities for the men’s and women’s tennis teams and determining the best course of action to give the football facilities at Seltzer Field its first facelift in almost 20 years.

Success on the fields, courts, and fairways has come as the result of great processes. Our coaches have taught their student-athletes that we must win every day; in the classroom and on the fields, courts, and fairways. During the 2002-03 year we won 19% of SAC competitions. The progress has been steady and reached 53% in 2006-2007. This marked the first time the department ever eclipsed the 50% winning percentage since becoming a DII SAC member. Other competitive successes have come in the All-Sports competition. In 2002-03, we scored 21 points across the 14 representative sport programs. This placed Newbery last in the SAC standings, a place they have finished each year. Once again, the rise has been steady as we scored successively more points each year leading up to the 2006-07 year when we scored 76 points and finished third in the standings, only 6 points out of first place. What a wonderful testament to the support of the College Administration and the hard work of the staff and student-athletes.

As the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, he serves on the Newberry President’s Cabinet, under Dr. Mitchell Zais. He also is member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and serves as a Board Member for the D2 Athletics Director’s Association.

Carter is married to his wife of 23 years, Rena. They have seven children: Aaron (20), a senior cadet at USMA-West Point, Becca (19), Beth (16), Jake (14), Rachel (12), Caleb (10), and Micah (8).

JoeElston enters his fifth season as head coach of Newberry’s softball program. In his nine year coaching career, Elston has compiled over 200 victories and was recently honored for the accomplishment at the Easton Victory Club Awards Luncheon, which was held at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. Elston was among 36 coaches to receive recognition for their career milestones. Under the direction of Elston, Newberry has excelled in academics as well as softball. The scarlet and gray finished in the top-25 of the NFCA Team GPA for three straight seasons. Elston has also coached 27 NFCA All-American Scholar Athletes. Last season, the softball team finished the season with a 19-25 record overall and a 3-10 SAC record. Despite the losing record, Newberry finished ranked nationally in several statistical categories; 15th in double plays per game, 40th in stolen bases per game, 49th in triples per game, 71st in scoring and 78th in batting average. In addition to the team accomplishments, several players found themselves nationally ranked in individual categories. Kat Hammond ranked in RBIs per game (29th), slugging percentage (43rd), batting average (72nd), doubles per game (79th), home runs per game (80th) and on-base percentage (95th). Along with Hammond, Aissa Gatewood ranked 43rd in the nation in stolen bases per game. In 2007, Elston’s team tied the school record for wins in a season, racking up 34 victories. To go along with the 37-25-1 record, Courtney Lindler broke the school’s single-season RBI record with 54 and earned All-South Atlantic Region honors from the NFCA and DAKTRON-ICS, while freshman Sara Powell was a first team All-South Atlantic Conference performer as well as All-South Atlantic Region. In the 2006 season, Newberry posted a 22-34-1 overall and 4-10 in the SAC. However at the 2006 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament, Newberry compiled a 3-2 record and advanced to the final day of competition before falling to eventual champions, Wingate University. The scarlet and gray garnered several awards in the 2006 season as juniors Courtney Lindler and Christina Kirby were named to the SAC All-Tournament team, while fellow junior Jessica Jackson earned recognition with an All-SAC Second Team selection. Elston’s second season at Newberry produced a win increase of five games as the scarlet and gray went 22-34-1 and acquired several postseason awards as sophomore pitcher and first baseman Christina Kirby was named to the All-SAC First Team as a utility player and junior catcher Sarah Lynch was an All-SAC Second Team member. On the academic spectrum, senior pitcher Kayce McLeod was an ESPN The Magazine All-District III Academic All-Region First Team pick and Newberry led all conference teams in team GPA. “Newberry is a diamond in the rough right now and we’re just starting to get polished,” stated Elston. “This program [softball program] is on the way up. The leadership in this school is instilled in the players and the coaches have instilled that leadership as well. I’m here to turn this program around because I believe in what [athletic director] Coach Carter and [president] Dr. Zais have given us.” Elston came to Newberry via the University of Evansville, where he served as assistant softball coach. While at Evansville, he helped

guide the Purple Aces to a 40-20 overall record in 2004. Besides coaching, Elston also coordinated scouting reports, recruiting student-athletes, and fundraising. Prior to his stint at Evansville, Elston was the head coach at Bellarmine University, a Division II institution in Louisville, Ky. From 1999-2003, Elston compiled five straight winning seasons en route to being named the Great Lakes Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, his Bellarmine teams also maintained a team GPA of over 3.0. In 1999, he was inducted into the Kentucky Softball Coaches Hall of Fame. Elston has also coached on the high school level, heading the program at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville. While at DuPont Manual, he led his team to a 1997 state championship. He has also been a successful business owner, owning a dry-cleaning service for nearly 20 years. Elston and his wife Suzanne currently reside in Chapin.

First Season

Assistant coach DougEargleenters his first season with the Newberry College softball program. With 30 years of coaching experience, Eargle has a wealth of knowledge of softball espe-cially in South Carolina.

“With Doug, I have an assistant that is closer to my age, so I think we will work well together,” said Elston. “Sometimes when you have a young coach it’s hard to communicate exactly what we need to do to help the team improve. We’ve already become good friends and have started to mesh well as a coach-

ing unit. I think the team can only benefit as we work together more.” Eargle was most recently at North Greenville University, where he served as the co-Head Softball Coach since March 2008 and before that he served as an assistant softball coach on the team. Prior to his coaching career, Eargle graduated from Austin Peay State University in 1979 with a B.S. in Health, Physical Education and Driver’s Education. He also played in the Atlanta Braves organization for three years as a pitcher and position player. After his playing career concluded in 1979, Eargle em-

barked on his coaching career. Eargle, a graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School, brings a wealth of experience in coaching softball in the state of South Carolina. His coaching and playing career lead to his induction to the Brookland-Cayce High School Hall of Fame. Eargle’s connections throughout South Carolina will be an essential tool in the recruiting of prospective student-athletes to the softball team. Alongside his recruiting connections, Eargle’s lengthy coaching career will help coach Elston in the success of the Newberry softball program this season. “I coached high school for thirty years and then I retired, but I got a chance to come to Newberry and I really look for-ward to this season in trying to help this team win as many games as possible,” Eargle stated. “We have a good group of players and I think this year our program is going to have a vast improvement from what they did last year.” Eargle will be in charge of the infield and defense where he can put his vast knowledge of the game to work along with his recruiting duties.

The 2008 edition of Newberry College finished the season 19-25, but suffered nine one-run losses that could have changed the outcome of the season. As a result the scarlet and gray saw a drop off in victories from the previous season, when the team tied the school record for wins with 34.

Head coach Joe Elston points to three factors in order for the 2009 softball team to regain its 2007 success; Stolen Bases, Defense and Pitching. In addition to last year’s one-run losses, the team saw a decrease in stolen bases (67), fielding percentage (.937) and shutouts (1), while the pitching staff’s ERA increased by a third of a run. Coach Elston accredits last years record to these dips in production, when compared to the ‘07 season and prior seasons.

In order to increase those numbers, coach Elston has brought in four transfers and five freshmen to an ex-perienced squad that boasts two preseason All-South Atlantic Conference selections; Kat Hammond and Sara Powell. Last year, Hammond and Powell combined for 98 hits, 20 doubles, 10 homeruns, 69 RBIs, 33 walks and 30 stolen bases. The duo’s continuance of dominant hitting will be vital for the offense to produce runs.

ScheduleNewberry will partake in two non-conference tournaments this year by traveling to Florence, S.C. for the annual Patriots Invitational hosted by Francis Marion. Newberry will host it’s own tournament, the Mid-South Invitational, from Feb. 27-Mar. 1 in Spartanburg, S.C. as fifteen teams will partici-pate.

In total, Newberry will play 54 games, which includes 22 at home, 22 on the road, and ten at tournaments. The scarlet and gray will play in 14 different cities and 29 different op-ponents. The 54 total games include 16 games against eight SAC opponents with an even split of eight home and away.

With a slew of South Atlantic Conference teams that are capable of taking home the regular season title, coach Elston hopes that this season will have the perfect combination of team cohesiveness, pitching and hitting to bring home Newberry’s first SAC softball title. Newberry can also gain a title at the 2009 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament in Hickory, N.C. at Lenoir-Rhyne’s campus.

PITCHINGIncoming transfer, Amanda Huckestein from Concordia University will help to bolster the rotation that saw a decrease of nine shutouts in ’08. Huckestein as well as fellow junior Kristen Hicks, who went 7-7 last year with a 3.95, will be the team’s main pitching arms to carry the load of the season. Two others that will see time on the mound are freshmen Mehgan Carter and North Florida transfer Felicia Taylor.

OUTFIELDThe outfield returns plenty of experience as three starters return; Aissa Gatewood, Amy Jarrell and Chelsie Hilbourn. All three combined to start in 116 of 125 games played in. Backing up the trio will be Chelsea Chipoletti, Stephanie Blazer and Jessica Teague, who played in a combined 67 games last year. Newcomers to the outfield will be Whit-ney Wiles, a transfer from Spartanburg Methodist, and freshman Courtney Flach. Wiles was an All-Region Second Team selection for the Pioneers and Flach was an All-Coun-ty selection playing at Sickles HS in Tampa, Fla.

INFIELDOne mainstay and several utility players will make up the infield this year as Kat Hammond will command second base and be surrounded by a platooning cast of start-ers. First base will most likely be covered by sophomore Richelle Mirabal, while the opposite corner should be home to Sara Powell. At shortstop, coach Elston will look to Jessica Reid, who is returning from an injury plagued 2008 season. Elston’s arsenal of utility players inlcudes; Mirabal, Powell, Reid, Angela Cataldo and Haley Watson. All of the utility players could see action at up to four different positions. Newcomers to the team will also have a chance to step in and collect playing time as Newberry added several talented infielders this off season; Mehgan Carter, Felicia Taylor, Taylor Edmund and Lacy Burdette.

CATCHINGCatcher will be extremely deep this year as four play-ers have the capability of fielding the position. Tiffany Pigage is the returning starter with 24 starts and will be challenged by several incomers for playing time. Transfer Amanda Schumacher, from Young Harris College, along with freshmen Christine Stokes and Lacy Burdette will look to garner playing time throughout the year.
