Nothing unusual. 4) I cannot save downloaded programs from the internet as the window disappears as soon as I click 'Save As'. I can only Run programs from Internet. I also cann ot save the Notepad attachments from the scan as nothing happens when I click 'S ave As'. Edit: I can neither Save nor Run GMER. I strongly suspect a corrupt version of Windows Update. Just a hunch, but it mig ht be something else like a corrupted .exe registry file or something. I've been doing a LOT of Googling but nothing came up. [Post 1]: becks56Date : 09-04-2010 07:31 AMThread Title : 0xc0000005 error

I posted my problem in another forum about a month ago but didn't get any replies so hopefully someone here can help me.

1) As soon my desktop loads up, the following error pops up: 'The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click ok to close the application'.This happens for several applications.

2) I cannot run/access any programs from my Start menu or Desktop. This includesControl Panel, My Computer, My Documents and most applications i.e. iTunes, etc. The few programs I can run are Internet Explorer and AVG Antivirus.

3) Already did several antivirus scans like AVG and online version of Trendmicro. Nothing unusual.

4) I cannot save downloaded programs from the internet as the window disappearsas soon as I click 'Save As'. I can only Run programs from Internet. I also cannot save the Notepad attachments from the scan as nothing happens when I click 'Save As'. Edit: I can neither Save nor Run GMER.

I strongly suspect a corrupt version of Windows Update. Just a hunch, but it might be something else like a corrupted .exe registry file or something. I've beendoing a LOT of Googling but nothing came up. Below are the DDS and Attach scans(sorry couldn't attach as zip file due to problem #4 above). Please help.

Hello becks56,

I'm not seeing any malware here, and you stated that none of your onboard toolsfound any either. You also stated that you suspect a Windows Update to be the culprit.

Windows7 System Restore is very robust. I wonder if you've tried that yet? If not, try going back to a point a day or so before the event, and see how things are. I would use Method 2, Through System Recovery Options at Boot, for running System Restore.

Hi Ried!

Thanks a lot for your reply and suggestion. It worked like a charm. Don't know why this option didn't cross my mind before, but I figured any system restoring options would have been my last resort as I didn't want to lose my files. I haverestored the computer all the way back to June as I've had the problem for quitea while and didn't want to take any chances. Thankfully restoring to an earlier

point only meant uninstalling the previous windows updates and certain programfiles, which I could reinstall later. My documents are still intact.

I'm glad to know there aren't any malwares from the log. Great link there btw, I'm a new-ish Windows 7 user and still trying to get used to the system. The mostimportant part is I can use my computer again. Thanks again.

You're welcome, becks56. :)

Many people 'fear' using System Restore. As you found out, documents etc. will remain intact. The only thing that would be lost are downloads that occurred during the time-span.

You might want to install the Windows Updates one at a time, and check the behavior of the machine. It may reveal which Update caused the issue and you can cont

act Microsoft about it, or search the web and see if others are having the sameissue. Perhaps by now, there is a hotfix available, or MS has resolved the problem.

Take care.
