Let’s start our journey!
• First things first-let’s think about what being a volunteer means. What do you think a volunteer does? Does being a volunteer help make you a positive American citizen? Talk about this with your partner and then begin the journey to find the answers!

Vocabulary WordsVolunteer- to offer to help someone because you care
Giving- to offer to another
Helper- a person that gives assistance to another
Community- a group of people who help and support each other
Recycle- when items can be used again
Respect- to show that you are being thoughtful
Now lets practice writing these six new vocabulary words in our journals!

Now let’s think-what does a volunteer do? We now know that a community volunteer is someone who helps in your community to make things better. Use the clues on the next page and try and guess the volunteers in your community! Come on, let’s go!

• Each one of us should try and recycle a few items every day!
3 items on Monday
5 items on Tuesday
1 item on Wednesday

We each recycle 3 items on Monday, 5 items on Tuesday, and 1 item on Wednesday. If we need to recycle the same amount on Thursday and Friday, then how much do we recycle in order to reach fifteen recycled objects by Friday? Think with your partner…. Write ideas in your math journal. Then click here for the answer!

In The Classroom…
• There will be a bulletin board in the classroom to remind all of us to recycle each week! We will empty it out at the end of each week and see just how much we collected as a class!

Congratulations! You have now learned about volunteers and one thing you can do in your community; Recycle! Now I want you to sit with a partner and think of five other things you can do to volunteer in your family, school, and community! Be sure to write them down in your journals!
