THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION The 2nd Edition of the Innovation in Healthcare Competition has the objective of promoting innovation between professionals from hospitals and research institutes. The competition has been organised by the Vall de Hebrón Institute of Research (VHIR) and ACCIÓ, with support from Roche. The awarding of prizes for the 2nd Edition of the Innovation in Healthcare Competition will be regulated by the conditions as specified as follows, which include the selection criteria to participate, the criteria for shortlisting the finalists and appointing the winners, the conditions for the proposals and other conditions. 2. 1. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION

The 2nd Edition of the Innovation in Healthcare Competition has the objective of promoting innovation between professionals from hospitals and research institutes. The competition has been organised by the Vall de Hebrón Institute of Research (VHIR) and ACCIÓ, with support from Roche.

2. PRIZES

The prizes will be managed by the institution to which the members of the team belong and will be freely available. 3. TIMELINE

The deadlines for the competition are as follows:

4. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

4.1. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:

Any person may participate in the 2nd Edition of the Innovation in Healthcare Competition if they work in:

Hospitals and Research Institutes that form part of the ICS (Instituto Catalán de la Salud).

Hospital Research Centres of Catalonia accredited by ISCIII (Instituto de Salud Carlos III).

Hospital Research Centres of Catalonia from the ITEMAS platform.

Any hospital employee who does not fulfil these requirements may not participate in the competition, employees from the Vall de Hebrón Institute of Research involved in the organization or the development of the competition are also excluded.

4.2. Types of Projects:

Projects resulting from research (new diagnostic biomarkers, new therapeutic targets, new treatments, etc.)

Know How which could be marketed (BBDD, software, Apps, etc.) Ideas and inventions obtained during the provision of care which could be marketed

(surgery instruments, diagnostic tools, machinery)

Any project which has been transferred or whose license has been agreed to by any other organisation or company will not be accepted.

5. PROCESS

5.1. Registration:

Any person who wishes to enter the competition will have to fill in the document which can be found on the website www.vhir.org/concursinnovacio and send it as an attached document to the following email address, [email protected]. Only applications received in this manner will be accepted.

The process will begin on the 12th of March and the deadline is midnight on the 24th of April 2015.

At least one of the members of the group has to be part of the organisation which owns the project.

The registration document, filled in Catalan, Spanish or English, only requires non confidential information.

By signing the registration document, the participants agree to the following terms:

Accept and adhere to the terms of the competition.

Agreeing to the usage by VHIR of the information obtained to try and lure the interest of companies which may be willing to invest in the project.

The information supplied is accurate.

The intellectual property of the ideas for the project belong to the authors, and they have not used any information from other parties without prior permission.

The authors are solely responsible for any lawsuit regarding the intellectual property or the usage of the ideas, and the organisation of the competition will not be liable for any claim.

The authors will have to provide any additional non-confidential information required.

In case the Project is shortlisted as a finalist, the authors will have to inform of any changes on the team members before the announcement of the winners.

The finalist teams are under obligation to attend the training session, be it on-site and/or over the phone meetings with their designated tutors, and to provide all the documents required in the time schedules established. They will have five days from

the announcement of the shortlist of the finalists, to inform the organisation as to whether or not they accept their status as finalists.

5.2. Shortlisting, selection of the finalists and choosing a winner:

The organisers of the competition will inform the hospital research centres of the projects that have been submitted by their institution.

Once the process for receiving the projects is closed (24th April), the External Technical Secretary will begin the reviewing process of the documentary conditions, shortlisting a total of 40 projects (20 from each of the categories). With the projects shortlisted, a panel of innovation experts will act as the Technical Committee and will select 10 projects from each prize category as finalists (20 in total). Shortlisting and selection will be undertaken taking into account the criteria for Innovation and Impact.

Innovation: Originality and Innovative. In that it is different / in greater respect to that which already exists (advantages and differentiating features in regards to processes, products and/or services in respect to existing projects).

Impact: Practicality y applicability. Potential clinical impact, economical and/or received by the beneficiaries (patients, professionals and/or organisations, to better the quality of life, healthcare, cost and time efficiency).

The finalists will be published on the 11th May 2015, via the website www.vhir.org/concursinnovacio. The 20 finalists of the competition will have to produce a Viability Report based on the characteristics, format and content referred to in the training session scheduled for the 13th May 2015. The viability report of the Project must be delivered by the 14th of June 2015 at the latest. The report will ask for confidential information regarding the innovation Project to further examine aspects such as:

Viability / Industrial Property: Cost and ease of implementation, internal and external barriers, capability to create entry barriers, patentability studies, freedom to operate.

Development Plan: Design and development suitability of the product. Team: Multidisciplinary promoting team and degree of involvement. Market: competitor analysis and target client.

The viability report will be evaluated by the Technical Committee and by jury, taking into account the criteria of innovation, impact, viability/industrial property, present status, team, client and market. Resulting from the evaluation, the winning projects of the first and second prizes will be presented at the award ceremony scheduled for the 10th July 2015.

At the award ceremony planned for the 10th July 2015, the 20 shortlisted finalists will be presented in an ‘elevator pitch’ style format and will hold a networking session with companies and potential investors with a view to acquiring or investing in the projects.

5.3. Training and Tutorials:

The 20 competition finalists will have to participate in an obligatory training session which will be held on Tuesday 13th May 2015, all day, at the Vall de Hebrón Research Institute (VHIR).

The session will deal with topics related to the transfer of knowledge and innovation, in particular:

The preparation of the Viability Report. Introduction to innovation: assessment process, means of transfer and means of

legally protecting the knowledge. Market and alliances in the healthcare sector. Means of financing innovation products: public/private announcements and private

funding. Elevator pitch and networking.

For the preparation of the Viability Report, every finalist will be allocated a tutor with whom they will work with on topics like market studies, commercial strategy, legal protection, and economic analysis etc. Every Project will have at least two advice sessions, either face to face and/or by telephone. The team of tutors has been compiled by consultants and/or external agents of VHIR and their allocation to a project will take into consideration the appropriate training and experience for each finalist.

6. CONFIDENTIALITY

All those involved with the competition are subjected to confidentiality agreements. The associated companies will not have any rights over the presented projects. The members of the participating team shall apply for permission from their respective entities to ensure full disclosure.

7. PROTECTION OF PERSONAL DATA

In accordance with the law applicable to the protection of personal data, you are advised that any personal data provided in relation with participation in the innovation competition promoted by VHIR, will be held with the sole purpose and exclusive use for the proper organisation and participation in the contest.

Upon completion of the competition, the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute undertakes to delete all of the personal data held.

8. ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES

Participation in the competition will imply acceptance of these rules, without condition, as well as any decision made by the Technical Secretary, the Technical Committee or the Jury.
