Hairstylist Kim Ohrling of 100 Mile House is feeling like a cut above the rest after winning the top prize on a BC Lottery Corporation Set for Life Scratch and Win ticket.

The lucky ticket was one of three she purchased on a whim on June 3 at a Kamloops drug store, while in town for a hair show.

It remained untouched until June 6 when she was back at home, alone, enjoy-ing a cup of coffee.

“I wasn’t sure at first when I scratched

it and had to look at it a few times. I called my husband (Ed Ohrling) and told him that he’d better come home, but he didn’t believe it either.”

The couple took the ticket to the local Husky gas station to have it checked.

“The woman at the counter was so excited. Her terminal shut down and she made a call to the Lottery Corporation.

I was able to talk to a rep and was told what to do.”

The prize is $1,000 a week for 25 years or it can be taken as a lump sum payout of $675,000.

After giving it some serious thought, the couple has decided to have weekly winnings deposited into an annuity, which will be saved for retirement.

“It secures our future,” Kim says, add-ing she wasn’t a regular Scratch and Win player before her windfall.

“I used to buy tickets several years ago and never won anything. Now I’m think-ing, ‘holy smokes, I guess people really do win’.”

“Literally flab-bergasted” were the words Callie McHarg, of Grapes Galore Wine Shop, used to describe the feeling she had on June 10.

That is when she got the news the wines she and Sharon Brooks made had won two gold, six sil-ver and three bronze medals at this year’s International Wine Making Competition in Manchester, New York.

McHarg notes the competition is the “Olympics of wine making,”

The 20 bottles of wine they entered were among the 4,300 bottles of wine being judged from eight Canadian provinces

and seven countries. McHarg was

extremely pleased with the silver-medal placing of their 100 Mile fresh rhubarb wine, as she used rhubarb from her neighbour’s garden.

She was also happy their fresh fruit British C o l u m b i a - g r o w n cranberry wine received a bronze medal.

In addition their sparkling dry Cellar Classic

G e w u r z t r a m i n e r wine won gold and Best-in-Show notori-

ety, and their Coffee Port wine also took a gold medal.

Last year, McHarg and Brooks only entered four bottles of wine, but still received two gold medals, as well as a best in show.

This awards com-petition is open to any wine makers from kit wines brewers to vineyard owners.

It is quite the accomplishment for this 100 Mile House winemaking duo.

The Balbirnie fam-ily of 100 Mile House made a clean sweep at the Barriere Fun Run at Fadear Park on June 3.

Ryan was the winner in the male five-kilometre under 15 years event and was fourth overall in the five-km distance among all age groups for both men and women.

His brother, Brandon, won the male 10-km under 16 race and was third overall in the 10-km distances, while his sister, Megan, was first to cross the finish line in the 500-metre children’s event.

Their dad, Wade, made it a quadruple family victory with a win in the male 10-km 30-39 event and he was also the overall winner in the 10-km distance.

The youngest Balbirnie to partici-pate, Sarah, finished fifth in the children’s category.

The run had 65 registered entries.

Cariboo Gardens Apartments in 100 Mile House has recently stepped up as a major sponsor for a car built and currently being driven by Barry Clayton of Vernon in the ARCA OK Tire Sportsman oval stock car racing series.

Apartment owners Georgette

Clayton and Tom Hibbert were given a thrill recently when the car rolled up to the building long enough for a few photos.

The car raced in late May at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Williams Lake, completing 100 laps and heads to Prince George, June 16, for another series race.

Drew Moss of 100 Mile House will be part of the pit crew.

The B.C. Liberal government has reached a tentative agreement for a four-year contract with the province’s 10,000 family doctors and specialists.

Victoria released few details of the agreement, which must be ratified by members of the BC Medical Association in a vote to be com-pleted by the end of July. However, the BCMA board is recommending accep-tance.

Health Minister

Mike de Jong said the tentative deal repre-sents a 1.5 per cent increase in the prov-ince’s overall budget for doctor fees over the first two years. That translates to an additional $45 mil-lion in each year.

The proposed agreement doesn’t specify an increase for years 3 and 4, but it commits the government and the BCMA to negotiate that amount later.

The health minis-try promises the new deal will improve patient access to fam-ily doctors, including in rural areas, and

improve recruitment and retention of spe-cialists.

de Jong said an additional $20 mil-lion is available for specialists, but it is up to the BCMA’s various committees to work out how it is shared.

“There will now be a discussion within the specialist groups about how that will be allocated.”

The government is still negotiating with other health-care employee groups and much of the rest of the provincial public service, under a man-date the government

called “co-operative gains.”

The ministry and the BCMA have agreed to a review of laboratory services that de Jong said may save $10 million to go to other priority areas.

PUBLIC HEARINGSPECIAL COMMITTEE ON TIMBER SUPPLY

Chair: John Rustad, MLA (Nechako Lakes)

Deputy Chair: Norm Macdonald, MLA (Columbia River–Revelstoke)

How can timber supply in BC’s central interior be increased?Forests make up nearly two thirds of the province and are an important economic, social and environmental resource in the lives of many British Columbians.

Over the last 13 years the outbreak of mountain pine beetle has affected an estimated 18.1 million hectares of forest throughout BC. The effects of the infestation continue to present major challenges to the forest industry and communities in BC’s central interior.

The all-party Special Committee on Timber Supply was appointed by the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia to examine and make recommendations to address the loss of mid-term timber supply in the central interior. Specifically, the committee must consider recommendations that could increase timber supply. A discussion paper describing the issue and outlining possible options is available online to inform and focus public input.

The committee will be holding a public hearing in 100 Mile House on Thursday, July 5.

British Columbians may also participate by sending a written submission, or a video or audio file. The deadline for public input is Friday, July 20, 2012.

For more information, including meeting dates, locations and times of public hearings and to view the discussion paper, please visit our website at: www.leg.bc.ca/timbercommittee

There was a good turnout for the recent 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society annual gen-eral meeting, and the consensus was the 2011/12 ski season was a very success-ful.

Most of the execu-tive members were willing to stand again and were voted back into their posi-tions.

Don McDermid has stepped down as grooming co-ordina-tor and Don Savjord will take over that position, says media co-ordinator Lauren Bock.

“We are very grate-ful to McDermid for taking on the position last year and thank Savjord for stepping into the position now.”

Most of the execu-tive members have played a role on the executive for many, many years and are becoming burnt out, she says, adding the society needs a couple of volunteers to take on small jobs to help spread the load.

Help is needed in the following areas:

• Someone to

help organize coach-ing workshops (Barb Matfin will be the mentor).

• A couple of peo-ple to be part of the adult events com-mittee, which plans adult events such as Valentine’s ski, moonlight skis, ladies tea, but only requires a time com-mitment of a few hours.

• Someone who enjoys writing, as the executive would like to have an occasional club newsletter.

The 2012/13 executive includes president Nicola

Maughn, secretary Tracy Moore, trea-surer Anke Zucchelli, registrar Maryanne Capnerhurst, media co-ordinator Lauren Bock, coaching co-ordinator Barb Matfin, skill devel-opment program co ordinator Colleen Ellens, grooming co-ordinator Don Savjord, trail main-tenance co-ordinator Neil Manhard, and facilities co-ordinator Tom Puckett.

Bock notes Deb Summers has agreed to co-ordinate the Challenge 300/500 again next year.

“We have two wonderful volunteers who have offered to write grant propos-als. Thanks go to Kathleen Rotluff and Colleen Robb.”

She adds the trail maintenance team has been already been working on improv-ing the trails.

If you are willing to help out with a couple of small jobs, contact Lauren at [email protected] or Nicola at nem [email protected].

By Spence HendersonThe sun came 24

hours late for the fair-weather golfers at the 108 Men’s Night on June 6, as 27 “real” golfers showed up and played the men’s nine before the rain came, and seven of them shot 40 or better.

In my fivesome, birdies were recorded by four of the golf-

ers, who qualified for prizes. Did I mention I didn’t earn a prize this week?

Maybe fivesomes do work better than foursomes. There were five deuces.

Unfortunately for some, four of them were in the first flight, so they were not as valuable as the sole second flighter Dan

Hadden’s deuce.Due to the smaller

numbers, we only had two flights of golfers – zero to 12 handicaps and every-body else.

Match play sign-up is over, but as of June 7, 25 golfers are in the competition. The Club Championship has been slated for the Aug. 18 weekend.

First flight Shane Wilkie

shot the low gross (34), while George McGibbon had the low net (gross 37

and net 34).Chris Stevens had

a 37 and Tony Morete and Matt McNeil had 39s.

Second flight Dean McNeil’s

score of 40 was good enough for low-gross honours.

Tony Lidstone returned to action with the overall low gross for all golfers (42 gross, net 31).

The Summer Reading Club registration begins soon at the 100 Mile Branch Library and parents are encour-aged to sign their children up for some fun activities.

This year the theme is “Strange... but True, and involves books, activities and games.

The free series runs July 3 to Aug. 16 and ends with a party in Centennial Park.

Several choices of weekly days and times are available

in four different groups for children aged three-four, five-six, seven-nine and 10-12.

Pre-registration is required in person at the library with Kendyl Boyd between June 15-28.

“Regular reading during the summer

helps kids to maintain or even improve their read-ing and literacy skills,” says Boyd.

“Studies show voluntary

reading is the number 1 factor in establishing good reading habits.”

Parents may choose one, hour-long program ses-sion each week offered for the younger age groups at various times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, while the aged 10-12 group is available Tuesday or Thursday from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

The 100 Mile House Branch Library is located at 449 Birch Ave.

108 Mile Ranch youth golfing sensation Lynden Jeffrey competed in the Junior Simon Fraser Tournament in Prince George, June 9-10.

He captured the overall low gross title by shooting the lowest two-day round, with scores of 74 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday. He was two shots better than the runner-up.

Jeffrey also qualified for both provincial teams.

He says he will definitely be attending the Juvenile Boys (16 years and under) that takes place in Princeton in August.

However, he is sure if he’ll be competing in the Junior Boys (18 years and under) that takes place on Vancouver Island in July.

Jeffrey’s next tournament will be the Kamloops City Junior Golf Championship at the Kamloops Golf and Country Club on June 24-25.

Have fun golfing and help support the South Cariboo Health Foundation at the Hit a Ball for Health! fun golf tournament, June 23.

Tee-off is at 2 p.m. at the 108 Resort Golf Club and you don’t have to be a great golfer to get in on the mountain of prizes.

It’s a Texas scram-ble team event and Lynda Lewis, health foundation board member, says every-one who participates should win some-thing.

There will be prizes for the top 3 teams, most hon-est team, long drive, long putt, closest to the pin and many random draws.

Everyone who

plays will also have his or her name entered into a draw for a barbecue valued at $500, she adds.

“There’s other games and events going on all day too and it should be a lot of fun.”

The cost to enter is $55 per person or $85 per couple and that covers nine holes of golf, a barbecue

and prizes.To reserve a spot,

call the 108 Golf Resort pro shop at 250-791-5212.

District of 100 Mile House Councillor Dave Mingo wel-comed Avril Harris, of the Let’s Play Program, to 100 Mile House Elementary School recently.

Harris brought 16 wheelchairs for the students to try.

The program is intended to assist students with mobil-ity limitations to become physically active early in life by helping estab-lish the fundamental skills, knowledge and abilities that develop physical literacy and allow them to confidently participate in play, sports and physical education with their peers.

As part of his wel-come, Mingo had an opportunity to try one of the sports wheel-chairs, and wheeled it forward and back-wards in the gym.

He notes it is easi-er pushing it straight, but manoeuvring, turning around and

going backwards, is harder than it looks. “It is good to have kids experience wheelchair athletics and you can partici-pate with or without a disability.”

Let’s Play also went to the Mile 108 Elementary School, where principal Tom Turner says it was a great day with all of the students having a chance to partici-pate in the place of a physically challenged person.

“Avril was excel-lent. He was energetic and tried to get the students into a frame of mind of a physi-cally challenged person.”

Students were amazed at how much work it took to par-ticipate. The other thing they learned was how to be a participant with a mobility-challenged person, he adds, and how they can help without doing it for them.

The program also made stops at a num-ber of other schools in the South Cariboo.

Area students learn about physical literacy
