Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

April 14, 2019

Dear Friends,As we celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend we begin the most sacred week of the Liturgical Year. The liturgies of Holy Week are certainly full of many of the rich traditions and rites of our Catholic faith. The once a year rituals and the sacred music that accompanies them are what makes Holy Week so special . I am hoping that you and your family are planning on being with us for these special liturgies.

Holy Week begins with our celebration of Palm Sunday. The readings remind us of Jesus’ entry into the city of Jerusalem riding on a donkey while the people all welcome Him waving palm branches shouting “Hosanna.” The distribution of palms takes place to commemorate this triumphant entry and the long standing tradition is

to display the palms in our homes throughout the upcoming year.

Tuesday of Holy Week is always a special day for all priests. The Chrism Mass held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross is the one time all year when every priest of the diocese is invited to concelebrate a liturgy with Cardinal Seán. At the liturgy the Cardinal blesses the Holy Oils that are used sacramentally in every parish throughout the year. It is a beautiful mass and the gathering also includes a luncheon where three priests are recognized for their ministry. It is one of the few times all year where we get to see priest friends and classmates. I always look forward to this liturgy. Holy Thursday is my favorite liturgy of the year to preside at for many reasons. The rites of Holy Thursday commemorate the Last Supper at which the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood began. The

ritual of the Mandatum ( washing of feet) is done

to remind us all of our commitment to service of one another and to the Gospel.

Good Friday is the most solemn day of the liturgical year. It is the only day of the year where the celebration of mass is not allowed. the liturgy of Friday is to recall the death of the Lord on the cross and His passion.

Holy Saturday is the grand celebration of the Easter Vigil. The night is a beautiful liturgy which this year will include the baptism of a brother and sister and the reception of two other community members into full communion with us. The darkened church becomes illuminated by the “Light of Christ” as it is lit from our Easter fire and salvation history is read and sung to us on this most sacred night.

All of the Holy Week days lead up to next Sunday’s glorious celebration of Easter Sunday. “The Lord is Risen!” Alongside of this column is a shaded box which contains the schedule for these most important days. I am hoping for a full church to celebrate these liturgies here at Incarnation . Your attendance will help us toward that goal.

Have a blessed Holy week.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSIONAPRIL 14, 2019

What Kind of King?We are shown two kinds of king in the bible story for Sunday.

One kind has power, wealth, pride, and the forces of war. This king had room only for what he pretended was the welfare of the people. Instead, he took only what he himself wanted. At the other end of the spectrum is a king or queen who has empathetic care for each person, for the well-being of the populace.

I know that this idea could apply easily to the political condition of the United States today. But, this Sunday, let us look at the biblical grounding of such an idea. I want to use TH White’s story of King Arthur (The Once and Future King). There we are told that Arthur was slated to be the good kind of ruler, not the power monger.

As you may know, Merlin the magician, in White’s version, kidnapped Arthur the baby from his

father’s great castle and began to train him in a far away bedraggled court, in order to teach him about the small and modest beings of the world around him.

The remainder of that story remains for another day, but it is interesting to note that nearly the same thing happened to Jesus. Not that he was kidnapped, but that he was brought up in quite unpretentious circumstances, and that he loved the small and beautiful parts of his dusty childhood.

Then, this Sunday, Jesus suddenly receives the pomp and glory of power! What happened? Has he changed into the bad kind of king? Let us look.

The custom was for a royal person to ride on a colt, or as it is often translated, a donkey. This was not a sign of humility but of kingly status! People would strew their cloaks on the roadway, along with the tall palm fronds they had picked, in order to shield the King from the dirty road.

Jesus did not shy away from such honors; in fact, in the Processional Reading we hear that he caused them to happen! He sent disciples to get the colt/donkey. Then he rode it into Jerusalem. People honored him with cloaks and palms as Savior King.

Why did Jesus submit to such treatment?

Liturgy has an answer. Peter, who had vowed and sworn that he would never ever deny Jesus, goes ahead and denies him three times. Jesus says out loud that Peter must be “counted among the wicked” (Luke 22:37, quoting Isaiah 53:8-12). Then Jesus sweats blood in the garden, and at last gives himself over into the devil’s hands, saying in effect, “This is your hour, the time for your darkness.” A mock trial follows and our King joins simple thieves in bloody death.

So there was no king at all. Had the throwing the Palms been a mistake?

Look again.

Leadership has, at its root, service. The real reason for kingship is not dominance, riches, honor or power. These give siren calls to entrap the leader. Kingship and all leadership exist in order to secure the welfare of the kingdom and especially the welfare of those who are in it.

Jesus comes to bring this kind of kingdom, one of service and humility, not of pride and competition. The way of the cross is the greatest fulfillment of his kingship, as opposed to cheering and accolades.

Palm Sunday brings us the real thing.

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.
