Today, Africa is a region that is of great strategic importance to the global economy. African countries are among the world’s fast-est-growing economies. These challenging economic times call for more trade and investment, not less. Canada is proud to be part of Africa’s rising commercial success. Canadian businesses are very excited about the potential there.

Our message is very clear. In many areas, Canada can and will help Africa as its economies continue to develop and create jobs and pros-perity for the future. Another mes-sage is also very clear. Canada is committed to deepening its trade and investment ties throughout Africa.

I think it’s a matter of broadcasting all the good news that come from this amazing continent which is simply breathtaking and whose potential is enormous. This is for the business community and the government to showcase and demonstrate what the potential of Africa is.

THE HONOURABLE BERNARD VALCOURT Minister of State Forum Africa 2011

“”

Dear colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce our upcoming Africa symposium en-titled “Looking Forward”, to take place on the third week of October (final date to be announced), and the accompanying Gala event to culminate the tenth anniversary celebrations of our organiza-tion, the Canadian Council on Africa.

We would like to take the opportunity to invite you to join us in our anniversary events for two reasons. First, through these events we want to thank you - our members and sponsors - for your continued support of CCAfrica. This support has allowed us to become a successful organization bridging Canada with Africa since 2002.

As well, our anniversary will be an occasion to look forward. I am now more than ever convinced that CCAfrica will have another successful ten years ahead, particularly as we receive positive news from the African continent on a daily basis. We now are witnessing a period of rapid social development, outstanding economic growth and much welcomed reform in African governance.

This is why we dedicate our half-day symposium to topics covering both economic development and gov-ernance in Africa. In this regard, we will focus on how Canada-Africa relations are changing under ever-evolving aid, trade and diplomacy conditions. This is an occasion for Canadians and friends to come together and generate constructive ideas for a future Canada-Africa strategy.

As you probably know, Africa’s current population will double in the next 40 years and Africa will become the fastest growing economy over the next five years. With an average age of 18 years - whether we call them “gen-eration M” or the “cheetah generation” as Ghanaian economist George Ayittey calls them - the youth today will be the key to Africa’s future. CCAfrica believes that the rise of this new and populous generation presents good opportunities for in-vestment, trade and economic growth. This generation will lead the democratic governance process in Africa. Of course they are also increasingly becoming the consumers of goods and services. But will they have meaningful employment?

Please join our symposium and gala as a participant and as a sponsor. We look forward to seeing you there.

Registration for the Symposium – National Art Center

Opening presentations: Greetings by Mr. Bradet, President and CEO of CCAfrica

Brief summary of CCAfrica’s ten years; illustration of the Africa’s change during one decade, a brief description of what Canada’s strategy towards Africa could be, urging participants to brainstorm.

First plenary: Canada- Africa relations

The goal of the first plenary would be to give an overview of Canada-Africa rela-tions till today, and the circumstances that influence this relationship (aid, trade, diplomacy) to brainstorm and gather ideas for a possible Canada-Africa strategy for the next 5 to 10 years. Presentations will be made policy makers and practitio-ners.

Networking break

Second Plenary: Economic development of Africa

We will explore what Africa economic development will be over the next 5 to 10 years. Three perspectives will be presented: European, American and Canada.

What role does the private sector could play? The need for foreign investments in African countries: question of royalties, and required rate of return. What are the challenges that must be dealt with by the private sector and governments? What does the rise of new very populous generation mean for future investments, trade opportunities and economic growth? Of course the new generation is increasingly the consumers of goods and services.

The more companies go and do business there, and have good experience - the more the percep-tion index will go up. We will spread the word about our success stories, but also about some of the mistakes which have been made. How to do business, how to deal with some of the tough legal environments and how to best to address some of the issues in difficult jurisdictions, and how to cre-

ate an environment for investment...

CHRISTOPHER M. WOLFENBERGPartner in Norton Rose CCAfrica Energy Forum, June 11, 2012 Calgary

There is a negative perception about the continent, but only among those who are not yet investing to Africa. African progress is not only economic but also in socio-political issues and that story needs to be told more often and more confidently. The great progress is led by the change in mindset of Africans themselves – Africans themselves are undertaking more activities. This means that there is more in-

tra-African investment on the continent. In 2011, intra-Afri-can investment accounted for 17% of all new FDI projects.
