Pope Francis’ prayer intention for July 2017

That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life.

For the Church, that as disciples of Christ we would allow the tiny seed of faith to grow in us, so that God

may plant further seeds in others through our faithfulness and service …

A parable is an interesting literary form that throws together or compares familiar events or items, while also providing a spiritual teaching. The parable of the grain and the weeds involves a concern about non-believers who are part of the early community of followers of Jesus. The disciples are restrained from removing them. How quick

are we to try to root out someone we perceive as less perfect or less desirable than ourselves? Do we make room for God’s greatness and counterintuitive ways?

July 23rd - 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time Jesus tells us not to fear those who can kill the body but rather those who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

Catholic Social Teaching Corner

July 22-23 -- 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Gospel this Sunday reminds us that sin and virtue co-exist in our world. How do we sow seeds of virtue and nurture them in ourselves and others? We do it through our actions: love and forgiveness rather than anger and retribution; peace rather than violence; sharing rather than hoarding. One great need is to help those coming out of jails and prisons to re-enter society. How can your parish help our sisters and brothers grow in virtue?
