Children who read at home do well at school

Purpose

The purpose of RWI phonics is for children to learn to read

as quickly as possible so that they will then be able to read

a wide of books that will propel their vocabulary

growth

What children should be able to do at the end of Reception

Read Write Inc facilitates children to achieve these goals

How does it work?Through RWI your child will: Learn sounds with their corresponding

letters and letter groups Learn how to read words by blending Read lots of specially written books

featuring all the words they have learned to sound out & blend (decoding)

Learn correct letter formation Become confident to spell using sounds

What to look out for today:The 5 principles of RWI

Praise – Children learn quickly in a positive climate.

Pace – Good pace is essential to the lesson.

Purpose – Every part of the lesson has a specific purpose.

Passion – It is the energy, enthusiasm and passion that brings the teaching and learning to life!

Participation - A strong feature of R.W.I. lessons is partner work and the partners ‘teaching’ each other (based on research which states that we learn 70% of what we talk about with our partner and 90% of what we teach).

About Fred... We use Fred to help the children to learn to

read Fred can only talk in sounds...(Fred can only say c_a_t, he can’t say cat)We call this Fred TalkIf children can understand what Fred says they

can blend orally. Blending is needed for reading

We call the words which children can decode green words

Fred also helps the children to spell Children convert a whole word they

hear into soundsThey put sounds they hear in a word

on their fingers...We call this Fred Fingers

Before children read the story they review the sounds they know and practise reading the words.

The children will then practise the words that will be used in the Storybook, particularly the multi-syllabic words and any tricky words.

the text independently and to help their partner read every word correctly – no guessing!

They will also be asked questions to develop their comprehension (understanding)

RWI Writing

There are 3 main processes involved in writing: handwriting, encoding (spelling) and language comprehension.

Handwriting

Children are taught how to form letters of the alphabet accurately,

quickly and effortlessly. The formation is practised every

day until

children can write the alphabet letters quickly and easily.

Encoding

Speed Sound Lessons teach childrenboth to decode for reading and

encode for writing.
