NEW FESTIVAL LAYOUT AND 15TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION This year, the Boston College Arts Council is thrilled to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Arts Festival simultaneously with the University’s sesquicentennial. In honor of this milestone year, the Arts Festival will feature a new performance and exhibition venue with fresh, collaborative arts programming. The Stokes Art Tent is a combination gallery and small performance space, allowing for innovative programs, increased access to students’ visual art, and an intimate setting for receptions aimed at celebrating the arts. In addition to our new venue on Stokes Lawn, we have updated the Main Tent in response to the University’s renovations to O’Neill Plaza, increasing the size of the tent and the main stage inside. We hope you will enjoy extra performance space, more seating, and increased visibility and accessibility. Happy Birthday to Boston College and the Arts Festival!

ARTS AWARDS CELEBRATION AND RECEPTIONfriday at 4:00 p.m. in the stokes art tent

On Friday evening, the Arts Festival culminates with a celebration of the arts and the accomplishments of Boston College artists. Students, faculty, and alumni will be recognized for their significant achievements in the arts, as well as their contributions to arts com-munities at BC and locally.

The 2013 Arts Alumni Award will be presented to Robert Polito ’73 for his outstanding achievements as a poet, author, and critic. (See previous page for details.)

The 2013 Arts Faculty Award will be presented to Sheila Gallagher, associate professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Boston College. Gallagher is a multi-media artist whose many forms of work, including video, flower installations, paintings, and computer-aided drawing, explore different modes of representation as well as the nature of perception and belief. She is being honored this year for her outstanding contributions to the arts at Boston College over the past decade as well as her professional success and vibrant studio practice.

The Arts Council Awards Program also recognizes sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have made outstanding contributions to the arts in their disciplines. Students are nominated by faculty and arts professionals on campus. Award recipients will be announced online at www.bc.edu/artsawards.

Vice President for University Mission and Ministry Jack Butler, S.J., and Arts & Sciences Dean David Quigley will present the awards. The brief ceremony will be followed by an open reception and celebration, with entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, and a delectable dessert display. Professional puppeteers Brad Shur and Roxie Myrhum have been collaborating with Boston College students throughout the academic year to pre-pare for this tremendous presentation of puppetry theatre. Shur lead a fall puppet workshop produc-tion lab to construct the puppets for the upcoming show. Myrhum serves as the puppetry coach for stu-dent actors and performers throughout the spring semester. *Admission: $15, $10 for seniors or with BC ID. Tickets available online at www.bc.edu/robsham or at 617-552-4002.

DEVLIN HALLChasing Ice with James BalogThursdayBook Signing and Reception 7:00 p.m., First FloorFilm Screening and Discussion 8:00 p.m., Room 008

In the spring of 2005, James Balog ’74, recipient of the 2005 Arts Council Alumni Award, launched the Extreme Ice Survey. This project used revolu-tionary time-lapse cameras to document changes in the glacial landscape of the Arctic. The survey resulted in spectacular footage that became the documentary Chasing Ice, winner of Sundance’s Excellence in Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary Filmmaking.

The documentary is directed by Jeff Orlowski, a cinematographer and award-winning filmmaker who has worked with Balog since 2007. The Extreme Ice Survey project was a collaboration between scientists and artists, including videographers, photographers, and a team of extreme-weather expedition specialists.

Sponsored by Institute of Liberal Arts, BCEEAN, the Environmental Studies Program, the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, the Arts Council, and Ecopledge. Event is free, but registration is required at bc.edu/arts.

mcmullen museum of artPortugal, Jesuits, and Japan: Spiritual Beliefs and Earthly Goods

Portugal, Jesuits, and Japan highlights a period of inter-nationalism that gave way to insularity following the expul-sion of the Portuguese from Japan in 1639. The exhibition takes the viewer through the complex landscape of religious ideas, customs, and artistic styles that typified the Nanban period as an age of explora-tion—when merchants and missionaries alike, both European and Japanese, saw spiritual beliefs and earthly goods as inex-tricably bound.

Examples of the many types of objects depicted on the screens are also on display, including elaborately decorated Japanese furniture, lacquerware, military equipment, Indian and Chinese ceramics, textiles, furniture, and paintings by Jesuit-trained Japanese artists.

Presented by the Women’s Resource Center and the Boston College Libraries, Reflections through Time showcases the past and present accomplishments of alumnae and current female students of Boston College. The mirror, the centerpiece of the third panel of the exhib-it, is an impetus to encourage current students to recognize their potential and harness their power to be successful in their post-graduate pursuits.

The Life and Death of a Water Bottle depicts the extensive amount of natural resources required to create a single water bottle. The exhibit also demonstrates the environmental impact of recycling in comparison to disposing of a water bottle in a landfill. The goal of the project is to show how a seemingly innocent everyday item can have huge environmental consequences, and to high-light easily accessible sustainable resources.
