Laura Henderson is an architect with experience ranging from retail stores to office and industrial buildings. Working in a fast paced environment has given her experience in all aspects of project development. She has had the opportunity to work with select clients for years developing relationships built on trust and experience that has allowed her to infuse projects with design oriented solutions.

Most notable is her work with XSport Fitness. Laura was able to create a functional file sharing system that would actively update projects as changes would occur to prototype drawings. This experience helped her understand the importance of teamwork and inner office communication. Effectively communicating to all team members, including consultants and clients, was essential to roll in prototype changes effectively on all current projects nationwide.

Although efficiency is extremely important to her, Laura is most passionate about the design process. She strives to continually assess the design against the projects original objectives even when immersed in construction documentation or focused on deadline pressure.

Laura believes in a collaborative design that focuses on client goals. Helping clients through the design process is the most rewarding part. In her work space planning she consistently pushes to make her designs not only functional but have moments of excitement and surprise. Design and the built environment should be fun.

Working primarily on career development in the past few years has left Laura with little time for hobbies, but she has found time to become passionate about yoga and cooking. After a hard day working through change orders and construction documents she finds it’s a wonderful way to unwind and recharge for what creative challenges and surprises lay ahead.

INTEGRATED MARKETING OFFICE Integrative marketing office is an efficient open concept design that uses views of downtown Chicago as an exciting backdrop. To customize the space for the end user, NWS worked to incorporate branding strategies and corporate colors. White board and chalk board walls were featured throughout the space to allow for this creative group to display their own custom and seasonal art. Huddle rooms and conference rooms were located within the center of the space to provide the open office area with as much natural light as possible. Keeping in mind the history of the building, NWS worked closely with the construction team to highlight the unique age of the underlying structure by leaving key weathered elements exposed.

SHAPES BROW BAR The driving force behind this Shapes Brow Bar location was the ceiling. This element clearly drew potential clients toward the reception desk which is located twenty feet inside the space. The black and white motif was developed to create a clean pallet for stylists to work within. The flooring pattern was used to reinforce the lines of the ceiling above, while creating a runway effect. As you move past the accent wall you enter a more personal zone for massage treatments and hair styling.

LEWIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS COMPETITION

The university wanted to move their College of Business by re-purposing an existing structure into a state of the art educational facility.. The challenge was to maintain the integrity of the building, which created some interesting constraints, while still redefining the function of the space. This was accomplished by replacing a portion of the existing roof to create a grand common area and clearly defined main entry. The idea of masonry units was very important in designing the main entry. A traditional unit of construction was enlarged and then the planes were shifted in response to external stimuli. This allowed the existing building to maintain relevance and be framed by the new construction.

The purpose of the industrial adaptive reuse project was to revitalize abandoned portions of the silicon valley landscape primarily filled with concrete tilt up structures into healthy work environments that promote discourse between employees and community members.

The main design intervention was creating a public circulation route though active light industrial buildings. Though drastic, it solved many problems. It created a natural gathering space and it provided internal views and light to the employees of the building. The canopy stretching over the walkway acted as a barrier to the elements. To create a functional outdoor space the roof was developed into a sculpture garden which paid homage to the circuit board, one of many technologies developed and produced nearby.

The Palouse Ice Arena’s long span structure was intended to speak to the undulating hills of the Palouse while creating an unobstructed floor plate for the ice rink program. To create a project that would stay active in all seasons the plan included a horse rink, cafe and a large covered area for concerts in the summer. To minimize operating costs and maximize efficiency the building was divided into sections according to their temperature requirements. The designated site was adjacent on one side to single family residences. In reaction to this the location of the ice arena was pushed as far away from the homes as building code allowed. This considerably cut down the noise for the projects neighbors. In order to be contextual the roof of the structure bent down as it becomes closer to the residential area as well.

A conservation community was created by integrating an existing environmental organization, Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute, with a sustainable housing development in Moscow, Id. The goal was to create a new environment fostering interaction between PCEI, the new residents, and the existing wildlife while creating a sense of symbiosis between elements often seen as mutually exclusive. To achieve this vision, the natural capital will be partially borrowed and used to produce the social capital necessary for the new community. This was done in a way that minimized damage to existing wildlife corridor and created a new habitat for both man and nature.

Connection was the goal for the Sears 1 North State project. Sears was doubling its square footage by taking over the floor above their current space. The 13th floor had been subdivided into multiple tenants with very different design aesthetics. This presented us with the challenge of connecting the13th floor independently while integrating it with their existing 12th floor space. Working with a lighting designer helped us unify both floors while reducing energy costs for the end user. Creating independent finish selections for each floor helped maintain their own personal identity while unifying the floors with the same color orange. Working with local artists also helped us infuse excitement into the project.

NWS Architects was hired to expand this fortune 500 company’s existing office space. The primary focus of the project was on the customer experience. In order to achieve this we created a distinct entry element with a neutral color palette allowing them to hang installation pieces showcasing their products to potential clients. We also designed a product showroom, state of the art boardroom, and rest areas / meeting rooms to fully develop the client experience. Working with the Odyssey II team to establish the circulation and user experience perimeters was the most interesting and rewarding part of the project. They have since moved into the facility and have expressed how happy they are with the space. To see a digital fly-through of this project and other work please visit Laura’s LinkedIn Profile.z
