Dear Parents and Guardians

NAPLAN Our educational focus this week has been unavoidably drawn towards the National Assessment Program -

Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This is an important assessment as it provides parents and schools with

data about individual and whole school performance in relation to all other children in similar classes across

Australia. It is, however, limited in that it only assesses the two stated areas of Literacy and Numeracy. Whilst

forming a significant element of the curriculum, these two areas aren’t everything and children’s creativity,

scientific and sporting abilities are not assessed at this time. Nor are the children’s emotional intelligence and

their interpersonal skills that are essential elements of their development. It is important to remember that these

assessments are only one aspect of the overall development of the children and they should be considered along

with all of the other assessments that are conducted by staff on a regular basis throughout the year.

You will no doubt have heard through the media of the problems experienced by schools Australia wide with

the on-line Writing assessment that the children completed on Monday. At St Mary’s, we were extremely

fortunate that we did not experience any technical difficulties!

CATHOLIC SCHOOLING AT ST MARY’S “Those who are in charge of schools must never forget that the parents have been appointed by God himself as the first

and principal educators of their children …...” Pope John Paul 11.

Research, anywhere in the world, confirms that when parents are partners in their children’s education, their

children improve their achievement levels. So, keep in touch with the school. Don’t leave it always to the

school to let you know how your child is achieving. Stay aware of what your child is learning, how they are

going and what you can do to help them at home. Arrange a visit to the school to talk with your child’s teacher

or schedule a phone call. Good communication between home and school is vital to create and sustain a

climate that is conducive to productive learning.

Parents, you are the source of your child’s affirmation. Children will believe what the people they love and

trust believe, including how they feel about school and their own ability to learn. So, after praise and

encouragement, encourage, perseverance, a warm, supportive home atmosphere will influence your child’s

confidence and motivation to become a successful learner.

It can be helpful, on occasion, to think about our role as parents, for it is truly a privilege to have given life to a

child and have accepted the responsibility, great though it is, of nurturing and providing for that child through

those developmental years. Fortunately, the teachers and staff here at St Mary’s, who are professionals, will

serve to help you succeed. Your child will enter our school, move through its various year levels and eventually

leave; but your child will still be part of your family and still be your responsibility.

So, welcome to the commencement of another school term when home and school come together to bring

success to a continuing phase of development for your child.

As we come to the end of week 3, I just want to let the St Mary’s community that I have encountered a bit of

health issue, which is currently being treateed, and I hope to back on board at St Mary’s in the coming weeks.

In my absence please see Ms Daniela Miotti should you have any questions or concerns relating to your child’s

academic progress or any school related issue.

Wishing you all a wonderful week.

COMMUNIO WEEK FUNDRAISING In Week Five, we will be celebrating Communio Week. Communio is the name given to the Bishop of Geraldton’s Appeal to help

the needy people in the diocese of Geraldton conducted annually at Christmas time as the ‘Christmas Communio Appeal’ . It is also

conducted annually through the Diocese in each school for one week, and is known simply as ‘Communio Week in Schools’. Each

year we have Communio Week in Schools. This is a time to learn more

about some of the people that our diocese supports, to pray for these people

and to raise funds for them. Various activities are suggested during the week

to help young people understand and be involved in all this.

Our Communio Week activities involve the Year 5/6 Class visiting the

Never Too Old club on Thursday 30 May 2019.

Please complete the permission slip at the end of this newsletter and return to the

school office by Friday 24 May 2019.

On Wednesday 29 May 2019, all the students will be having a “Dress in

Your PJ’s Day”, to raise funds for Communio Week. Please remember that

suitable footwear needs to be worn.

There will also be a ‘Communio Meal Deal’ for lunch to raise funds for the

Communio Appeal and the cost is $5.00 per child. The Meal Deal will

consist of one sausage sizzle, one juice box and one ice-cream.

Please complete the lunch order on the tear off slip at the end of this newsletter,

and return it to the School Office with payment by Friday 24 May.

COMMUNIO POSTER WIN FOR ST MARY’S SCHOOL All our students participated in a competition to design a poster and sticker

for Communio 2019, highlighting this year's theme, LISTENING TO THE

SPIRIT. Our winning design was by our Year Six students, Ace and Reeve.

Congratulations to Ace and Reeve as they went onto win the overall

Diocese Competition with their design as shown. Their design will now be

the Communio Poster and will be on the stickers for Communio 2019 that

are circulated throughout the schools in our Diocese.

NCVISSA WINTER CARNIVAL On Friday 21 June 2019, the students in Years 3-6 will be travelling to the Northampton Community Centre for the NCVISSA

Winter Carnival. We will compete in the netball competition only due to our small numbers. The Year 4/5 students will be in B

division and the Year 5/6 students will be in the A division.

We will require assistance from our parents for coaching, scoring and umpiring for both the A and B teams. If you are able to help

on this day, please complete the tear off slip at the end of this newsletter and return to the school office as soon as possible.

WANTED – OLD MAGAZINES Please drop any old magazines to the school office for use in the classroom.

NATIONAL QUALITY STANDARDS (NQS) The National Quality Standard (NQS) sets a high national benchmark for early childhood education and care and outside school

hours care services in Australia. The NQS includes seven quality areas that are important outcomes for children. The seven

quality areas are:

Quality Area 1 – Educational Program and Practice

Quality Area 2 – Children’s Health and Safety

Quality Area 3 – Physical Environment

Quality Area 4 – Staffing Arrangements

Quality Area 5 – Relationships with Children

Quality Area 6 – Collaborative Partnerships with Families and Communities

Quality Area 7 – Governance and Leadership

The staff in the early years at St Mary’s School has spent time looking at our areas of strength for Quality Area 5, Relationships

With Children all of which is documented below. Areas for further development have been added to our 2019 Quality

Improvement Plan (QIP).

PARISH NEWS

Fifth Sunday of Easter – Year C Today’s Gospel comes from Jesus’ Last Supper discourse. He is about to die. His final words to his beloved disciples are:”as I have loved you, you also must love one another”. In the end, all that matters is love, a love that is expressed most purely when we sacrifice ourselves for the well being of others. When we love in this way we show that we are disciples of Jesus who laid down his life for us. Celebration of the Word with Communion will be celebrated each Sunday throughout May, while Fr. Larry is away. Knights of the Southern Cross will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, 22nd May at 5pm, at St Johns’s, Rangeway. The Raffle at Morning Tea last Sunday was once again won by Cliff Dyer. $39.50 was raised and will go towards the upkeep of the Old Convent. Cliff has kindly donated the raffle prize back to be raffled again next month. Our Sick; Pray for Ines Miotti, Fr Brian Ahern, Patricia Casey, Col Constantine, Jean Williams, Paul Leeson, Owen Mulgrew, Jo Mattens, Maud Brown, Betty Thompson, Cliff Dyer, Jim Thompson, Sue Gravranish, Hazel Bunter, Ron Smith, and all the residents of Brookview Our Dead: Please remember in your prayers, the repose of the soul of Ron Johnstone who went to his eternal rest on May 18th. Also pray for all his extended family at this sad time. A funeral Mass will be held here at St Mary’s on Friday, May 31st at 2:30pm to be followed by committal and burial at Northampton Cemetery. Our three Diocesan Seminarians, Dominic, Savio and Peter will be ordained as Deacons on Wednesday, May 29th at 6pm in the Cathedral by Most Rev Bishop Emeritus Justin Bianchini. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts. The Little White Book: Six-minute reflections on the Sunday Gospels of Easter (Year C) – is available for purchase, at the back of the church. Cost $3.00 Prayer for a Good Season: God - We see and feel you in so many different ways and we know that you are there. We thank you for all the good things in our lives. The stability of our governments, our political and religious freedom and the easy way of life that is part of being an Australian and which we so often take for granted. Lord, we seek the blessing of your rain which brings hope to our communities of a good season. Continue to look upon us and send the rain we need in order to grow our crops and pastures so that we can provide for our families and fulfil our obligations. We ask that you grant us the support and comfort of your presence so that we can get through this season, no matter what the outcome. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen
