NEWSLETTER August 1996
AUGUST EDITORIAL
Hello folks, here is I sitting writing thiseditorial just prior to departing for mysummer holidays in sunny Italy so I amfinding it hard to really concentrate onradio club matters so please excuse me forthat.
Things that spring to mind is once againwe took part in the RSGB Field Daybut alas conditions were definitely nothinglike the last few years we have entered, anyway considering I think we have donenot too bad at all. I know Colin GMOCLNwill have a full account of the event but Iwould through the editorial like to thankall who took part, for what they providedfrom the smallest to the largest becausewithout your help it just would neverhappen.
Moving on to this montl sees our AnnualJunk Night and Special Event Stationat Tantallon so see more about that later inthe newsletter. This month also sees tltestart of the Club's Third Novice Class andI am sure you will wish them all well withthe course.
That's it tlrcn folks short and sweet as Imust go and get the case packed" butthe trouble is when I reread this is at clubnight it will then be all over, everyone say awe !!l!! ah ! wellnever mind.

To all those who will be participatingin the Club's Historic Scotland week-end this year, I thought that somebackground on the site that we are us-ing , may be of some interest.
We will be activatingTantallon Castleand the site will be at Gin Head R+search Site which is on the next head-land alongfrom the castle. The build-ings are of Second World War vintage, but with a history and purpose surpris-ingly little known, compared to EastFortune or Macmerry.
Radar, and British superiority in radartechniques, were important to our vic-tory in those wartime years. Apartfrom the Telecommunications Re-search Establishment (TRE) atMalvern which became the Radar Re-search Establishment (RRE) there wasa Scoffish dimension of radar research, and its home was at Gin Head adjacentto Tantallon Castle. The whole GinHead promontory was a ProhibitedArea and few knew at the time whatwent on behind the high fences.
The srte was owned by the Admiraltyand was particularly suited to testingnaval and'coastal radars. Not all ofthese were British. Almost certainlythe most activity at Gin Head occurredwhen German Wurzburg and Freyaradar sets, captured during theBnrneval Raid, were set up there andthere secrets probed. If the D-Daylandings were to have a chance of suc-cess, the German radars along theChannel coasts had to be jammed orspoofed. The techniques for doingthis vltal job were worked out andtested in East Lothian. During theseyears many ofthe foundling fathers ofmodern radar were to be seen at oneii lru: (;,r ' ;rrlofirei '., wr;rclt ir lg theiI trrain,.iat Gin f'lead
After 1945, like so many other instal-
lations, it languished. However, itwas solidly built and the Admiraltyheld on to it.
For a while it was leased to Ranco Mo-tors of Haddington, later LEMAC,who used it for, I thinh trials on largeelectric motors. But even before thisthe Edinburgh-based Defence Engi-neering firm of Ferranti had shown aninterest in it as they were deeply in-volved in radar trials.
As early as the middle-I950's , Fer-ranti had a presence at Gin Head andused the site quite extensively. In oneof these trials a Ferranti pilot lost con-trol of a Sea Fury aircraft just afteroverflying the site, and crashed nearWhitekirk. He and the observer weretragically killed.
Later, in the 1980's, Ferranti bought
Do youfeel like a Neglected XYL?
I am totally fed up, sick to the teeth - nopun intended, but I am sure that I'm notthe only wife, partner or girlftiend of anAmateur Radio Enthusiast who has hadIT with the time spent on radio pursuits.
I was fortunate enough to spend a fewhours with the GUYS at a Point quitenear to Longformacus recently during acompetition - Golly Gosh as the greenwelly brigade might say I ACTUALLYFOUND IT I'ASCINATING! Whatwas even more fascinating was that thelads were very sympathetic to me -considering the fact that all I ever hearor see is numerous aerials (that shouldprobably be antennas) popping up allover our property - or Jesus (bleep, bleep, bleep)????? such and such hasgone on the blink again!
I suppose you have heard it all before -MAI.TYTIMES!
Well, I have decided at my ripe old ageof ?? that I might get some attentionag;arn, rf instead of knocking it, I try tojoin IT!
Bob (???) has agreed to include me inhis novice class beginning late August,it would seem he hasn't had a failure yet- Well there is always aJirst andlhaveto say please don't hold your breath -youlike me might die from SPOTWELDING! I can't even change anelectric plug!
I loved CB way back in the 70s and wasknown as Bo-Peep" I used to spendhours on the band (licensed of course)talking to very interesting people. Butwe didn't lust exchange radio reports, weather conditions, QTHs and radioequipment.
{fyou feel as { do let's try andjoin themrather than sit back and let them have allthe fun!

the site outright and refurbished it asthe home of its Ground Radar divisionwhich stayed there until 1991.
The world knows how Ferranti werewiped out by fraud, and lately thesomewhat bemused staff have foundthemselves called Ferranti Interna-tional Signal, Ferranti International,GEC Ferranti, and most recently GECMarconi Avionics.
With the end of the Cold War and thecancelling of many projects GECclosed down the site. It remains oneof the finest radar trial sites in tsritalnand its history ranks it ;rmong manyfar more famous wartime memoriais.Strangely, it is not even listed.
Hope you all enjoy the event

RSGB VHF NATIONAL FIELD DAY 1996
The weather often surprises us on contest weekends just as it did for the Practical Wireless QRP Contest this year. \'HF NFD
weekend was to be no exception! For the week beforehand there had been rain and strbng winds and we feared the worst but
fortunatety our fears ,n.re ,ilutiuety unfounded- Other than a very brief shower on the Sunday morning there was no rain and the
winds, despite being present were not too strong. It rvas, as usual, an earty(ish) start on the Saturday morning with everyone aiming to be on site by l0am. fu it turned out many \!ere
there around 9.30am so we had plenty of time to get organised. Everyone mucked in to get the equipment set up while Ron
(GM0NTL) put the kettle on and Margaret (GMOALX) prepared to keep everyone supplied with lots of goodies to eat and
drink. The equipment to be used on each band was as follows :TONlHzTS95OSDXMUTEK TWF5 7A TRANSVERTERMICROWAVE MODULES 1OOW AMP8 ELEMENT EAGLE YAGI432M.HzTR85IETOKYO Try.POWER 1OOW AMP24 ELEMENT EAGLE YAGI

l296M.HzFr-290
LT23S TRANSVERTER4OW SOLID STATE AMP
55 ELEMENT TONNA YAGI
There were one or two new ideas and pieces of equipment being tried this year for the first time. On 70MHz Jim(GM0NAI) brought along a very impressive array of equipment including a TS950SDX , a 26 foot long 8 element yag' a 30 foot
high trailer mounted tower, a rotator and a generator to power the equipmenLA "new" 24 faot long 21 element yagi was to be tried on 144MlIz in an attempt to get more gain in the single antenna
section we were entering. This antenna was ma& using a normal 14 element MET yag with two e*ra centre sections added (ftom
two other 14 ele MET yagls). This resulted in a very large antenna but one which required extra supports both horizontally and
vertically to prevent the boom from bending too much in the wind. On this hnd we also decided to Ese a bnand new lightweight
rotator which had been sitting in its box doing nothing for several months. This was to be used on the basis that a lighweightrotator was better than no rotator at all .. ...a bad idea! I !
432WIz saw the first outing for Bobs (GM4UYZ) digital voice recorder which has been built to the same basic design asmy owrr one. As we were to find out it did help save the voices of those operating but not before suffering the statutory dose of
teething problems. These problems were most uneryected because I know the care that Bob took while setting up the voicerecorder.I am sure it will be perfect the next time though!!!
Alan (GM0USI) brought his usual l296billz equipment and an amplifier to help us increase the output power a bit thisyear. Operating on this band was ma& easier with the addition of yet another digital voice recorder. This time it was the one
which Robert (GMTAVE) had built for field day last year, now in a metal box with the appropriate connectors on it.As the contest got underway it quickly became clear that conditions were very poor, particularly on 432Vfr12 and
l296MFIz w.here conlact rates were painfutty low. The CW on 70MHz was going very well and l44MHz was very busy with 47stations bcing worked in the hrst hour. Following the initial rush of contacts things slowed and everyone settled into the nonnalcontest routines.
Margaret (GM0ALX) ably assisted by Ron (GMONTL) did her normal sterling work throughout and kept everyone wellf-ed and watered with tea, coffee, juice, stovies, quiche, cakes etc. etc. On Saturday evening the barbecue was set up and John(GMTOLQ) produced his butchers finest beefburgers for consumption by the masses while Ron made a fine fried breakfast on Sundaymorning. All in all I think we were very well catered for so a big thank you to Margaret, Ron, John and anyone else who wasinvolr,ed^
Bv early evening it was apparent that we had a problem on I't4MHz. The braks on the lightweight rotator was not goodenough to hold the antenna and as a result it rvas moving in the wind to the extent that at one point thc display said rve u'crc pointingsouth rvhilc. in Fact, the antenna was pointing west!! Plan B was called for! At about 8.25pm local time thc mast rvas lowercd andthc rotator rcmoved. The antenna stub mast was inserted into the main mast, a holc was drilled all the way througlt and a bolt rvasinserted to lock both together. A total of about 30-35 minutes was lost but from then onwards we knew where the antenna was
6ninting and could tum it using the cross-pole and ropes which had been addcd.'fhe evening $,ore on and the beer flowed which is more than can be said for the contacts on 432 & 129(>NItIr.t.!

after all.By then 7t).}4!Irz had closed down for the night too and an excellent CW score was achieved by the sole operator, Jim
(GM0NAI), and his loggers. At about half past midnight John (GMTTKA; was settled in as the 144\fiIz operator and people were starting to go to
bed so I did the same. Martin (GM0JCN), who had done quite a bit of the operating on l44MHz, having had a short sleep was backat the helm by the time I surfaced shortly after 4am.There had been a slow but steady flo\v of contacts during the early prt ofthe night and conditions were improving. This was con-firmed when we managed some contacts into Belgium and The Netherlands.
As peopte got up so the various other bands were switched on again. I operated on 432MlIz for a while and conditionsthere seemed to be htter too. A Dutch station was eventually worked by John (GMTTKA) later in the morning. The 7OMlIz stationbegan its SSB session at 7am local time and quickly started reeling offthe contacts. QSOs were coming thick and fast (in 70MHzterms!) and it looked very promising. Unforhrnately the l296Mllz station was soon to be switched off due to radio failure. TheVFO knob on Alan's FT290 locked up and could only be turned with a heary pair of pliers. At about 7.30am l?g6l$ftrlzwent Qt{T!
By about 9am we were joined again by Bob (GM4LIYZ) who had been at his parents Golden Wedding Anniversary bash(which Bob had organised) the previous night. He had a quick check on how things had been going then mucked in and hel@with the operating.
The remainder of the contest was relatively unevenffirl but a steady flow of contacts was generally present. Final details for each bancwere as follows :-BAND QSOs POINTS70MHz CW 43 63570MHz SSB 67 947l44lvftrz 260 327843Zt'tfrIz 42 4541296\/frlz 8 82

In general, considering the bad conditions, I think we did OK but the star performance of the weekend was definitely 70l\fi12.. Thiris the best we have EVER done on the band so well done everyone but particularly to Jim GM0NAI who not only provided th,70^fr12 equipment but also did the vast majority of the operating.
Finally, a big thank you to all who hel@" came to see us, or who gave us a confact during the contest. Your efforts, howevesmall, are most appreciated.
