From the Principal I would highly encourage all parents and carers to book a Parent Teacher Interview through the online process that opened last week. If you do not have internet access or experience any difficulties using this online feature please contact us and we can support you through this process. I am really excited to announce that after ongoing discussions since Christmas I can confirm that our school will receive a special visit with a worthy cause on the morning of April 2. Channel 7 will visit with their association through the Tour De Cure with television presenters Mark Beretta and James Tobin segments on Channel 7 Sunrise and Weekend Sunrise programs. This signature tour which has raised millions of dollars for the fight against cancer, is part of their 9 day ride from Newcastle to Noosa. The route for this year will take riders past our school and through our school community. It is planned that the riders will stop at Fernvale SS and undertake a “Be Fit-Be Healthy-Be Happy” presentation to our whole school. The presentation program should commence at 9am and run for about 30 minutes. Final details are being sorted with me over the next few weeks. We are extremely honoured and privileged to have such a signature tour by way of a cycling cancer foundation committed to finding a cure for cancer choose Fernvale SS to stop and drop in to meet students, staff and families. More information about this exciting event will be forthcoming! NAPLAN Online This year students in Year 3 and 5 will be undertaking NAPLAN Online. Much planning has gone in to making this a successful activity for both staff and students. Students from these year levels are currently being familiarised with examples of the format they may experience through this Online experience. I have prepared some information for all Parents and Carers to peruse and would be happy to answer any queries that parents or carers may have in regards to NAPLAN Online in 2020. A public demonstration site that parents and students can access at any time can be found at https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site I would encourage school community members to access this Public demonstration site and experience the example testing for the relevant year level. Links to Parent/Carer support can also be found on the left hand side tab. Please find attached a Parent Pack also in this newsletter which covers the following points:

1. NAPLAN Online – information for parents and carers 2. ACARA infographic – information on how student personal data is collected and

protected 3. The ACARA privacy notice

In 2020 there is a window to undertake NAPLAN Online from 12 May to 22 May. Each school will determine what days they will undertake the testing. Fernvale State School have determined that our days of Online testing will commence on Tuesday 12 May and conclude on the Monday 18 May. CRI Pamphlets Please find attached to this newsletter a Christian RI Brochure for the information of all parents and carers. Should you have any queries regarding any of this information please don’t hesitate to ask.

From the Principal Swimming We wish our Year 1 to 3 students a safe and enjoyable experience as they commence swimming lessons and some water awareness sessions over the next four weeks with Mr Grassick and Surf Life saving Queensland. Special congratulations is extended to Jack Salmon on his performance at the Met West Swimming carnival last week. Jack performed creditably in his two individual events. Well done Jack! John Fleming Mr John Fleming a National authority on Explicit Instruction has once again spent the day in our school today supporting our staff and students in our pursuit of excellence. We thank Mr Fleming for his continued support and consultancy to our school to assist in our journey of school improvement. Cross Country It was pleasing to see over 60 students at cross country training sessions during the course of last week. Students can join up to undertake some additional cross country training sessions with Mr Grassick and Mrs Tatt of a Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Keep training hard and you will reap the rewards. Cross Country will be held in week 9.

Kind Regards

David

From the Deputy Principal This week in Prep P I had the pleasure of chatting with Isaac, Hayden and Azalea as they made their felt board stories.

Activities such as this support the development of children’s oral language. Oral language lays the foundation for the reading and writing skills children will develop as they enter and progress through school. They will use oral language in all aspects of their education, in the classroom as they connect with their peers and teachers, and throughout their lives as they grow into adulthood. One way to support the development of your child’s oral language is to read to them, with them and re-read the favourites!

Mem Fox’s Ten Read Aloud Commandments

1. Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud.

2. Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to

hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read.

3. Read aloud with animation. Listen to your own voice and don’t be dull, or flat, or boring.

Hang loose and be loud, have fun and laugh a lot.

4. Read with joy and enjoyment: real enjoyment for yourself and great joy for the listeners.

5. Read the stories that the kids love, over and over and over again, and always read in the

same ‘tune’ for each book: i.e. with the same intonations on each page, each time.

6. Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or

anything else connected to the book; or sing any old song that you can remember; or say

nursery rhymes in a bouncy way; or be noisy together doing clapping games.

7. Look for rhyme, rhythm or repetition in books for young children, and make sure the books

are really short.

8. Play games with the things that you and the child can see on the page, such as letting kids

finish rhymes, and finding the letters that start the child’s name and yours, remembering that

it’s never work, it’s always a fabulous game.

9. Never ever teach reading, or get tense around books.

10. Please read aloud every day, mums and dads, because you just love being with your child,

not because it’s the right thing to do.

Have a lovely week! Kylie

Zones of Regulation – Tools/Strategies To support the implementation of the Zones of Regulation program across our school, each week in our newsletter we will share information and/or tools & strategies that we

are teaching our children.

This week we focus on Distraction Techniques. These are mostly utilised during the onset of a panic attack, behaviour outburst or complete shutdown. The purpose is to remove the trigger or remove the child from the trigger(s) and allow them to refocus on something else. This give their

mind and body a break allowing them to regulate their breathing and relax their body. 1. Focus on Something Else

a. Focus on a picture b. Focus on the words to a song c. Focus on the feel of the fidget in your hand

2. Grounding a. Look around, state 5 things you can see (look directly at them) b. State 4 things you can touch (touch them if you can) c. State 3 things you can hear (look in the direction you hear it) d. State 2 things you can smell (look in the direction you think it is coming from) e. State one thing you can taste (Identify where it came from)

3. Positive Self-Talk a. “I have done it before. I can do it again.” b. “Just try the 1st one and see how it goes” c. “I believe in me” d. “I am good at things” e. “I have a good life”

4. Do a “Reality Check” a. Are they really looking at me? b. Am I really that bad at this? c. Will I really fail if I try? d. Have I failed at this before? e. How important is this really? f. Will this really matter tomorrow, next week, a year from now?

Chess News It is hard to believe that we have just passed the half-way point of the first term… but the Fernvale Chess Stars have been very busy building their skills! The Year 2-6 children have been learning with enthusiasm in the weekly Chess lessons. The Open Chess Club on Monday evening, the Extension Group on Wednesday and the Chess Club on Tuesday are giving keen chess players great opportunities to progress… and the first Brisbane Zone competition is only a couple of weeks away. The Tuesday Chess Club continues to grow, with over 50 Fernvale children each week attending and now children from other schools joining in! High-school students are also coming to play, as the higher groups provide the toughest competition in the region. It is especially pleasing to see an even split of boys and girls… all the way through the groups! We can’t wait to welcome selected keen Year 2 students next term also! Could parents of the Chess Club children please note (and remind their child-ren) that all children are expected to come to outside the Chess room immediately after the 3pm bell, have a drink, eat and go to the toilet. They are then expected to enter the room and stay inside the building (excepting a toilet visit) for the duration of the Club. This is to enable active supervision of all children. Also, could parents please note that children must be picked up by an adult from the building when released at 5pm. If parking a vehicle for pickup, please ensure that the vehicle is well away from the school buildings…ideally on the other side of the open area. This enables the children (and adults) to be safe during the busy pickup time. Your support in the successful and safe operation of the Chess Club is appreciated. If you have any questions regarding this or indeed any other Chess matters, please feel free to contact me through the school. Mr. Geoff Butler
