Anniversaries are occasions tocelebrate the past and plan forthe future. During the Speed’s75th Anniversary, we celebratedthose who have helped us bringthe Museum to its current statureand level of service to the regionwhile also planning for successesin the years ahead. Like otherinstitutions that rely partially onendowment income to fund op-erations, the continued down-turns in financial markets have ledus to carefully scrutinize every as-pect of museum activity. At thispoint we see clearly that sustain-ing and building upon our pastlevel of excellence will occur onlywith new financial resources, andwe are confident that we can de-velop them.

The Speed Art Museum alreadyserves as an example of outstand-ing achievement in a medium-sized regional museum. With thecontinued support of all of ourfriends, we will build and expandupon the distinguished record ofour first 75 years.

THANKS TO THE SUPPORTof our members, donors, corpo-rate and foundation friends andthe Board of Governors, theSpeed Art Museum celebrated its75th Anniversary Year in memo-rable style. The Museum canpride itself on solid accomplish-ments in every sphere of museumendeavor during Fiscal Year (FY)2002. Confirmation of ourreaccredidation by the AmericanAssociation of Art Museumsreached us in March of that year, providing a ringing endorsementor our progress from 1991 to2001. The reaccredidation reportacknowledged with admirationthe zeal of our board and staff inforging new partnerships, extend-ing the museum’s service, and ad-dressing the key questions facingthe museum.

The Board and Staff workedhard in addressing key questionsfacing the museum. Developingnew processes and structures thatrespond more quickly to chal-lenges and opportunities thatarise from the point of view ofour mission. The Board has be-come more focused onfundraising, governance, educa-tion, issues of new space, the per-manent collection, relationshipswith state universities and thecity, and fiscal responsibility.

A summary of our activities incollecting, exhibiting, conserving, interpreting and funding our ac-tivities follows.

The 75th year was notable foracquisitions, especially in contem-porary art.

Yinka Shonibare’s Three Graces,2001, was purchased with fundsfrom the Stoll Acquisitions Trust.Douglas S. Cramer donated fourworks to the collection in honor ofPauline Compton Cramer, threeworks by Gary Stephan and one byDonald Sultan. The National Acad-emy of Arts and Letters graciouslypresented the Speed with CourtLady, 1999, by Judy Fox. Leonardand Adele Leight continued theiroutstanding giving in recent glassartworks, and through the StollTrust and the Decorative Arts Col-lectors major examples of ArtDeco glass and ceramics wereadded to the collection.

Fiscal year 2002 included a stel-lar schedule of exhibitions fromthe permanent collection, as wellas traveling shows and exhibitionsdrawn from regional collections.Visitors to the Museum duringthe period covered by this reportcould see some of the mostmemorable portraits ever paintedof Americans, masterpieces of tra-ditional New England folk art, drawings by Dürer, Michelangeloand Rembrandt, great examples

of early Kentucky furniture, theprivate works of Louisville sculp-tor Ed Hamilton, and Arts andCrafts pottery at its highest level. The Speed also circulated interna-tionally the exhibition, GatheringLight: Richard Ross Photography.

Conservation, as always, was aprimary concern of the museum. The major project in this periodwas cleaning and moving indoorsGeorge Gray Barnard’s monu-mental Prodigal Son.

On page 4 and 5 of this reportis a full listing of the Speed’s non-stop array of educational and in-terpretive activities. TheMuseum’s educational partner-ships have extended the reach ofthe Speed throughout SouthernIndiana and Kentucky. The Ken-tucky Department of Education,Gene Wilhoit, Commissioner, helped us reach thousands ofschoolteachers in grades K-12with materials geared toKentucky’s attainment testing inarts and humanities.

Our development efforts forFY2002 helped the museum con-tinue to offer exceptional exhibi-tions and programs. The NewAnnual Fund, spearheaded byRobert E. Kulp, Jr., brought highergiving commitments from moreindividuals than ever before.

A BOUNTIFUL PLENTY FROMTHE SHELBURNE MUSEUMFebruary 19–April 14, 2002

A Bountiful Plenty from theShelburne Museum: Folk Art Tra-ditions in America featured over80 of the finest examples ofAmerican folk art from one of thecountry’s best folk art collections. The diverse exhibition includedcarousel animals, quilts, shopsigns, weather vanes, cigar storefigures, and a range of other fan-ciful pieces produced during theeighteenth, nineteenth, and earlytwentieth centuries. Most wereacquired by the pioneering folkart collector, Electra HavemeyerWebb (1888-1960), who foundedVermont’s Shelburne Museum in

1947. During the 1910s,’20s, ’30s, and ’40s, Webb

was among a small

group of collectors drawn to utili-tarian American arts. They fo-cused their passion on the kindsof objects featured in the exhibi-tion. The quilts, toys, trade signs, weather vanes, and other piecesthat they collected eventually be-came known as “folk art.” Alongwith Webb, many of the first folkart collectors were progressiveAmerican artists such as WilliamZorach (1887–1966), whose workTiger, Tiger is featured in theSpeed’s permanent collection.

Louisville’s presentation ofA Bountiful Plenty from theShelburne Museum: Folk ArtTraditions in America was spon-sored by PNC Advisors.

MASTERWORKS FROM THEALBERTINAMarch 19–May 12, 2002

Masterworks from the Albertina,a remarkable exhibition of over 100Old Master drawings, watercolors, and prints from the Renaissance,Baroque, and Rococo periods, pre-sented works by Michelangelo,Raphael, Rembrandt, Dürer,Rubens, Titian, Poussin, Boucher, and many other major figures in arthistory. Drawings by many of theseartists are extremely rare (for ex-ample, it is said that before hisdeath, Michelangelo burned a largenumber of his own drawings andsketches), and the few that do existare often housed in old Europeancollections and rarely travel to theUnited States. The prints featuredin this exhibition were very fineimpressions of important and fa-mous compositions.

Louisville’s presentation ofMasterworks from the Albertinawas sponsored by Bolla Wines ofItaly.

Contemporary DesignsNEW ACQUISITIONS ENHANCE CONTEMPORARY AND DECORATIVE ART COLLECTIONS

THE COLLECTIONS OF con-temporary art and decorative artwere greatly augmented duringthe 2001–2002 fiscal year.

The contemporary art collectionwas bolstered by major gifts. TheDavid C. and Sarajean RuttenbergArts Foundation, Chicago, pro-vided a challenging work bysculptor Judy Pfaff. A veritableexplosion of color, Untitled(1983) is a dynamic wall sculpturemade from plexiglas, wood, andwire, painted with acrylic andenamel paint.

The television and theaterproducer Douglas S. Cramer, who was born in Louisville, do-nated four works to the collec-tion in honor of PaulineCompton Cramer. Thanks tothe generosity of Mr. Cramer, the museum is now the proudpossessor of three paintings byGary Stephan—Moon Silver(1980), Salt and Bad Lessons(1981), and Untitled (1988)—and a drawing, Interior, April14, 1980, by Donald Sultan.

Additionally, two works fromthe exhibition Other Bodieswere given to the museum.New Art Collectors memberJames P. Gray, II donated Fam-ily Grave Dirt (1999) by Lex-ington artist Louis ZoellarBickett, and The National Acad-

emy of Arts and Letters gener-ously donated the sculptureCourt Lady (1999) by Judy Fox.

The Speed utilized funds fromthe Stoll Accessions Trust to pur-chase Yinka Shonibare’s ThreeGraces, also included in theOther Bodies show.

The decorative arts collectionwas strengthened greatly with anextraordinary enameled glass vaseproduced in 1925. For the Speed,it represents one of the most im-portant decorative arts acquisi-

tions of the past few years.Although the exact details

surrounding the vase’s originsremain unclear, one can saywith certainty that it was madein Czechoslovakia. The vase isattributed to Adolf Hegenbarth.More specifically, it was made inBohemia, a region with a centu-ries-old reputation for producingexceptional glass. Conceptuallyand visually, the vase draws onCzechoslovakia’s experimentswith Cubism. Here, the influence

of Cubism is appar-ent in the vase’senameled decoration.Rather than naturalis-tic rendering, thepainted figures are re-duced to flat assem-blies of polygons, arcs, and other ele-ments.

OUR NEW INSTALLATION ofAfrican art presents some 25works from the museum’s collec-tion and on loan in the Mr. andMrs. Owsley Brown II Galleries.Prominently located between theDecorative Arts Gallery and thegrand staircase, its close proximityto the European and Americancollections offers a more globalpresentation of the collections, aswell as opportunities for provoca-tive cultural and artistic compari-sons.

The Speed’s collection of Afri-can art focuses on traditionalworks from the nineteenth and

twentieth centuries and is now ar-ranged by broad themes that playcross-culturally across the Africancontinent: “Beauty and theBody,” “Status and Display,”“Performance of Faith, “Ances-tors and the Dead,” and “Per-sonal Powers.” The themes high-light historical and cultural valuesfound in these works of art.

This installation is the latest ele-ment in a broad-ranging plan tore-conceptualize the African col-lection through new acquisitions, exhibitions, and programs. In2000, the museum created a planto develop the African art collec-

tion. The Speed engaged eminentAfrican art scholar Dr. SusanVogel—formerly curator of Afri-can art at the Metropolitan Mu-seum of Art in New York, found-ing director of the Museum forAfrican Art in New York, and for-merly director of the Yale Univer-sity Art Gallery—to write andhelp implement a plan for build-ing the collection.

The new installation will be-come increasingly important asan educational resource at themuseum. The Kentucky Educa-tion Reform Act (KERA) requiresstudents in Kentucky schools to

THE SPEED ART MUSEUMhas been the beneficiary of giftsfrom a number of donors whosegenerosity has shaped the mu-seum. Mrs. Hattie Bishop Speed, the Speed’s first donor, built themuseum in memory of her hus-band, James Breckinridge Speed, and left a collection of art and ar-tifacts. In 1996, a bequest fromMrs. Alice Speed Stoll, J.B.Speed’s granddaughter, gave theSpeed financial stability and theability to upgrade operations andthe art collection. The Board ofGovernors secured Mrs. Stoll’s be-quest in an endowment, the re-turns from which may be used asthe board directs, and in an ac-quisitions trust, the returns fromwhich are used for acquisitions.

The Speed’s board has ap-proved a policy that a percentageof the market value of endowedfunds, calculated using a 12 quar-ter rolling average, may be usedto support operations annually. This amount is utilized to partiallysupport the annual operationsand pay interest and principal onrevenue bonds. (The bonds wereused to finance the 1996 buildingrenovation and 1999 garage con-struction.)
