1111 Start early. Contact the financialaid office as soon as you have de-

cided on a college and ask for allforms and information about grants, loans, jobs and institutional scholar-ships. 2222 File a need analysis form. Thereare many versions of this form

Does it really make a difference where youchoose to go to college? What should you

look for when you are selecting a school? Look for a college where the institution-

al mission statement talks about a “Christ-ian” or “Christ-centered” emphasis. Thatstatement will be found in the catalog andstudent handbook and the school mustdemonstrate to accrediting agencies that ittakes specific and appropriate action tocarry out its mission. When you talk withadmissions counselors or other representa-tives of the college, ask about the steps thatare taken to make the educational experi-ence one that is truly Christ-centered.

Look for a college where quality class-room instruction is given a high priority. That concept usually expresses itself withrelatively small classes taught by fully pre-pared professors. Large classes taught bygraduate assistants generally end up beingimpersonal and contribute significantly tohigh drop-out rates. What you experience inthe classroom may well be the most impor-tant part of the college experience. The kindof faculty hired and the priority given toteaching will shape what happens in theclassroom.

Look for a college where the institutionemphasizes high standards of morality, ethics and decency. We live in an “anythinggoes” society and all too often the atmos-phere in colleges and universities are moremirrors of contemporary society than theyare mirrors of good values. Check out thestudent handbook and look at the policiesthat regulate campus atmosphere and livingconditions.

When the school stands for Christianprinciples of conduct, the campus atmos-phere and institutional focus will offer a cli-mate where a person can flourish. A collegeor university which unashamedly attemptsto incorporate the highest and best ofChristian thinking and behavior into its in-stitutional life will do more to educate thewhole student than one where “anythinggoes”.

Look for a college or university wherethere is evidence that people will really careabout students and their well-being. It’s im-portant that you feel that you matter to theadministrators and to the faculty and thatthey are available to answer your questionsor assist you when you need help. The yearsyou spend getting your education are tooimportant for you. Students can find a newsense of direction when a caring Christian

professor takes the time to help them with aproblem or when a caring Christian admin-istrator invests some time with a student.

The atmosphere on campus has a greatdeal to do with whether a student stays inschool and perseveres to get his or her de-gree within the traditional four or five years. An intentionally, unapologetically Christiancollege is marked by an atmosphere wherethe students feel that they really are valuedas persons.

One of the factors that distinguishes aChristian college from a secular institutionis the attention given to and the valueplaced on spiritual growth and developmentat the same time it emphasizes academic ex-cellence.

Every human being needs to grow anddevelop intellectually, socially, professional-ly, emotionally, and spiritually.

In the Christian college there are no re-strictions to prevent professors and the in-stitutional climate from lifting the students’sights to look for the highest standard inevery area of development. Colleges anduniversities that emphasize spiritual growthand development alongside intellectual andprofessional growth and development will beplaces where a stu-dent stands thebest chance of be-coming all Godwants him or herto be.

Most collegesand universitiesare comfortablewith the task of imparting informationwith the hope that the student will absorbsome of it and grow intellectually. Every-one expects also that during the collegeexperience a student will decide on amajor and begin preparing for the worldof work and thus they will emphasize pro-fessional or pre-professional development.

The variety of campus activities andservices help to address a student’s psy-chological and social needs with the ex-pectation that the student is going to ma-ture some in his or her social skills.

The area of development most oftenneglected is the area of spiritual growth.Wouldn’t it be tragic to invest four or fivecritical years of your life developing thefoundations to become intellectual andprofessional and end up being morally andspiritually deficient because that part ofyour education was neglected?

A Christian campus takes a variety ofapproaches to emphasizing and nurturingthe growth and development of the spiri-tual life. College sponsored chapel ser-

vices, campus min-istry sponsoredevening worship,Bible studies andmission service pro-jects, are typical ofactivities at a Chris-tian college or uni-versity.

Faculty and staff serve as mentors andencouragers to students and often helpstudents work through their search forgrowing in their walk with God. Frequent-ly God uses those faculty mentors or staffencouragers to help a student come to adeeper understanding of God’s will for hisor her life vocationally.

Where you choose to go to college maywell be one of the most important deci-sions you will ever make.

A student’s chances of succeeding aregreatly enhanced by choosing a schoolwhere the characteristics noted here arefound.

Take your search seriously. Ask thetough questions. Talk to current studentsas well as to the professional counselorsworking with you. Your future will be pro-foundly affected by the college youchoose.
