Synchronized skating is a relativelynew sport, but one that offers the figureskating athlete an opportunity to experi-ence his or her chosen pursuit as a partof a team, and not just as an individual. As a result, it has been widely embracedby parents eager to encourage theiryoung skaters, who often train in rela-

tive isolation, to participate in a moresociable activity. Synchronized skatersfrequently continue to compete as mem-bers of college teams.

The first USFSA national precisionchampionships were held in 1984.Precision team skating, as the sport waspreviously referred to, received theISU's official recognition as a figureskating discipline in 1994, and that sameyear, the ISU began sanctioning interna-tional competitions, with 15 countriesparticipating. In 1998, the ISU adopted amore internationally understood term,"synchronized skating," as the officialname of the sport. Just six years ago, the

We were lucky"As eternity is reckoned, there's a lifetime in a second."

- Piet Hein

This last weekend's storm, like the previous big one, fellconveniently on a Sunday. While there were lots of prob-lems at airports, on trains and on the highways, we were, lucky it was not worse, and that local highway crews were ;able to clear so much of it away. Even so, many school-children enjoyed an extra day off from school. But justimagine what a tragedy it could nave been. We were lucky, not because no bad things happened? but because a majorblizzard or hurricane could wreak extra havoc here.Remember Hurricane Katrina just last .September?

After Valentine's "bay,"the next big celebration comingup is Mardi Gras,'which has a special poignancy this year.

The city of New Orleans, most famous for its Mardi Grasparty, is struggling to its knees to hold another one. Somany of its former citizens are still homeless, some ofthem even living among us here on Long Island.

Many local groups have held fundraisers. for NewOrleans and are continuing to send truckloads of suppliesdown there. And yet we need to keep the momentum going.

How about joining in that spirit and holding our ownMardi Gras parties, either at local restaurants that reallyknow how to do it, or at home? It could be a fun way toraise dollars to send to the Red Cross, and every little bithelps.

The true spirit of Mardi Gras is to find joy in themoment, and to share that joy with others.

Our need to knowAs journalist and former State Department spokesman

Hodding Carter III said, "People don't generally worryabout access to government information until the floodcomes and you discover they've been lying to you aboutthe levees. It's better to find out before the flood hits."

That's why back in January New York State AttorneyGeneral Elliot Spitzer joined with 11 other state attorneygenerals to protest proposed changes in EnvironmentalProtection Agency regulations, changes that would limitthe amount of information available to the public abouttoxic chemicals released by industry across the nation."Public disclosure could be a strong incentive for pollutersto reduce their use of toxic chemicals," he said.

The original rules for a Toxics Release Directory ofchemicals such as lead, mercury and PCBs, were formulat-ed under President Ronald Reagan after the 1984 deadlyrelease of toxic chemicals at a Union Carbide facility inBhopal, India.

SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES Everyso often something happens that makesme realize how much time has passedand how much things have changed.Three events, one after the other, recent-ly made it pretty clear that more time hasgone by than I would like to admit.

Two weeks ago my husband returnedfrom some Saturday errands toannounce that the cassette player in ourcar wouldn't turn off. He had tried press-ing every button ; in the CD/cassettegizmo to no avail.

Probing with a screwdriver didn'thelp, and so he brought the car to ourauto mechanic. One billable hour later, the cassette player was repaired with noother damage and the mechanic notedthat the old cassette was cracked andsomehow triggered the constant "on."

Later in the day we ran into our neigh-bors, who have two young sons. In com-menting on "How's things?" we relatedthe story. As we walked away fromthem, we heard their six-year-old sonask his father, "DWdy, what's a cas-sette?"

My husband and I looked at eachother and smiled. Once again we wereconvinced that we had to stay together,if not only for love, for the fact that pret-ty soon no one else will understand whatwe are talking about.

The previous day I had gone into thecity to attend the retirement luncheonfor my husband's secretary. She hadcome to the company 30 years ago in

1976. As part of my husband's commentsduring the speech honoring her, he madereference to some facts he had read in atiny booklet he purchased entitled"Remember When." In 1976, the price ofa car was $4500; a stamp cost 13 centsand the movie that won the AcademyAward was "Rocky." It all seems likeyesterday.

This past weekend, I went into the cityfor my annual visit with my childhoodfriend Carol Ann. For over 30 years wehave met under the clock outside ofMacy's. This year we met uptown forthe first time to take advantage of cheap-er parking for her since she drives infrom New Jersey.

Carol Ann and I have birthdays oneday apart. Growing up, virtually everyimportant occasion in our mutual lives ismarked by a photo with the two of us.

. We received our first communiontogether as well as our confirmation.Although she went to public school and,1 went to the parish parochial school, westill saw each other every day after class. She would either call for me or I for her.Sometimes I would yell her name out-side her apartment building in a voice

. loud enough to reach her fifth floorapartment or else I would run up fivedouble flights of stairs because I wasafraid of riding the elevator.

As little children we played dollstogether and "cooked" together, con-cocting pretend salads and mushy soupsfrom the various.vgrasses and leaves in

rny grandfather's side garden. We wentto Saturday movies together whereCarol Ann would sometimes suffer amigraine attack. We would leave togeth-er, walking home in the blistering hotsummer sun which was a sharp contrastto the ice-cold movie air conditioning, aluxury that existed no where else in ourmiddle class neighborhood.

Since times were different, we tookbuses and trains at a young age, enjoy-ing an independence which is unfamiliarto our suburban teens today who mustbe ,chauffeured everywhere. When shewent to one private high school and I toanother, our after-school conversationsand time together diminished. We couldno /longer sit on a front stoop and talkendlessly after an hour commute andhomework assignments that took solong to complete.

She attended my wedding but I couldnot be at hers since it was scheduled totake place in the Bronx in the summer-time three days after the due date for myfirst child. Who could risk delivering intraffic on the Throgs Neck Bridge?

And so, as she moved to New Jerseyand I settled out here, our visits over theyears evolved into our once-a-yearmeeting. "What do you do?" my hus-band asked, early in the three decadeprocess. "We talk and eat lunch; we talkand walk, and we do a lot of laughing,"I responded.

We try to meet as close to our January28-January 29 birthdays as possible and

have only had to reschedule a couple oftimes because of snow. And no matterwhere we are in our lives - her adoptingtwo beautiful babies, both of us original-ly staying at home and raising our kids, eventual job changes, life changes, par-ents' deaths and our own health issues -somehow several hours of our get-togethers always center on the past.

We talk about people we knew andwonder where they are now. We remem-ber walking to Fordham Road in theBronx, a several mile hike east andnorth from West 164th Street. We talkabout rooting for the Yankees and thethrill of sitting in the good seats for freebecause her dad had a second job thereand got us in. We talk about early datingand how naive we were.

She calls me "Joanie," the only personin my life who does. I call her "CarolAnn" while everyone else calls her"Carol." We hug and kiss as we partcompany. We have talked and walkedand laughed for over six hours.

We promise to get together mid-year,but never do, and when I write the fol-lowing year's Christmas card, I includeseveral suggested dates for our annualritual. She often calls just after NewYear's.'

"Joan, it's Carol. Is everyone stillalive?' We laugh, but the joke is moresobering as each year goes by.

My dear Carol Ann. One of my pre-cious links to the past, for like me, sheremembers.

Library taxes

To The Leader:A recent article appearing in Newsday

regarding inequitable funding oflibraries on Long island was welcomed.("LI library taxes hit poorest hardest,"Newsday, January 25). However, theapproach of the article in Newsday thatone size fits all resulted in glaring inac-curacies to specific localities such asFreeport.

The article clearly stated that the com-putation of taxes was based on a homemarket value $350,000, which is theaverage market value of a home inNassau County.

The average price of a home inFreeport, however, is only $293,600. Asa result, taxes for the average marketvalue of a home in Freeport would be$336.32 and not the $400.96 as calculat-ed.

Also one cannot compare the cost ofrunning the Freeport Memorial Library, serving a community of 40,976 people,20,095 of whom are registered borrow-ers, with smaller libraries. The FreeportMemorial Library is a full servicelibrary open 7 days a week and provides

.a collection that includes :• 303,825 books• 20,876 DVDs, CDs and videotapes• 188 specialized electronic databases• 324,889 totalThe library subscribes to 427 maga-

zines and provides 48 public accesscomputers for use by children andadults.

During the course of a year 428,108

visits are made to the library. The library offers programs ranging

from Toddler story time to English as aSecond Language (ESL) classes:

• 3,525 Adult programs, includingmusic and literary programs .thatreceive Island-wide attention

• 4,172 programs for children andyoung adults

• 7,697 totalThe library offers ESL and GED

classes and also offers a homework helpprogram for students. The library circu-lates 235,175 items during a year. Thestaff at public service desks answered73,292 questions during the past year.

Twenty-six community groups meetmonthly at the six meeting rooms in theFreeport Memorial Library including:the American Legion, 100 BlackWomen, African-Atlantic GenealogicalSociety, Daughters of the AmericanRevolution, Audubon Society and theStearns Park Civic Association.Informational town meetings are heldregularly by legislators who representthe community.

The Library Board and the LibraryFriends groups (all volunteer) work tomake the library a vital communityresource.

Newsday owed it to the homeowner-taxpayer of Freeport to publish a moreaccurate account of what their librarytaxes really are and include informationfor the taxpayer to understand the valuereceived for the taxes paid.

Viewpoint: You get what you pay for

a

by Laura Schofer

Harvey Levinson, chairman of theNassau County Board of Assessors, recently held a press conference to urgeresidents to review their library district.

Mr. Levinson said that "these multi-million dollar operations should be sub-jected to frequent and intense scrutinyby appropriate government agencies atthe state and local levels to ensure thattaxpayer money is being well-spent."

Newsday followed up in an article, pointing to Freeport Library has havingone of the highest tax levies in NassauCounty. Out of 52 libraries, Freeportwas. ranked fourth in taxes paid. Mr.Levinson used as a reference point ahouse assessed for $350,000, whichtranslates to a payment of $400.96 inlibrary taxes.

But according to David Opatow, director of the Freeport MemorialLibrary, the data is misleading. Theaverage home in Freeport is assessed for$293,600 and that means a residentpays, on average, $336.32. Meanwhilein Oyster Bay, residents who live in ahouse assessed for $350,000 pay $42.96in library taxes. Mr. Levinson's questionis why is there such a disparity?

But that question needs further exam-ination. How do you compare apples tooranges? How do you compare the serv-ices provided by a library the size ofFreeport's to a one-room library on theGold Coast in Oyster Bay? Better yet,are there any houses in Oyster Bayworth just $350,000?

Mr. Levinson's question may beworth debate. How much are the resi-dents of Freeport wil l ing to pay for afirst-class library? Even if one uses Mr.Levinson's reference point of $400 perhousehold, that means that Freeporterspay, on average, about $33-$34 a monthfor an invaluable service. You can spendthat much for fast food that doesn't evennourish your body, never mind yourmind or soul.

We cannot afford to cut library servic-es in our community. Our future and ourdemocracy depend on the ability of itscitizenry to make educated decisions. We have prospered as a nation in partbecause as a free people we have contin-uously used human knowledge to createand innovate.

Synchronizedskatingfrom page 3

very first World Synchronized SkatingChampionships were held inMinneapolis, Minnesota; twenty oneteams from 17 countries competed. Each year, support grows for .somedayincluding synchronized skating as anOlympic sport. As such, Freeport RecCenter is proud to offer Long Island res-idents a glimpse into the future of skat-mg and the Winter Olympic Games..-Freeport Rec Center is located at 130

East Merrick Road in Freeport, right offthe Meadowbrook Parkway. It offerspublic skating on Thursdays, 4-6 p.m,Friday nights, 7:45-9:30 p.m.,Saturdays and Sundays 1-3 p.m. and3:30-5:30 p.m.

Anyone wishing further informationOn the facility can call the Rec Center at377-2314. To learn more about becom-ing a part of the Freeport SkatingAcademy, request extension 14.

Certainly our schools do a fine job ofeducating our children, of teaching themhow to think, but education is a lifelongprocess and a library is a knowledgecenter, a place for everyone from agetwo to 92.

Where can someone go to learn aboutanything from baseball trivia to themeaning of life? Andrew Carnegie, whobuilt 2,811 free libraries during his life-time, once said that a public library was"a noble place where treasures of theworld continued in books will be opento all forever ..."

Even our Founding Fathers linkedgovernance to learning, the very firsttime the Continental Congress con-vened in Philadelphia in July of 1774, itwas inside a library. Article I, section 8of the Constitution was designed topromote "the progress of science anduseful arts," according to the Library ofCongress. And, it was ThomasJefferson whose belief in sharingknowledge that led him in part to sellhis multi-lingual 6,487 volume collec-tion to the Library of Congress after theWar of 1812.

A library's mission is to make its

Com

resources available to the community andto sustain and preserve a universal collec-tion of knowledge and creativity forfuture generations, through books, maga-zines and newspapers, as well as videos, dvds, cds. And of course, we can't forgetthe Internet. Not everyone has a comput-er at home. At the library you have accessto this brand new world of information.

Here are some facts about theFreeport Memorial Library, as suppliedby Mr. Opatow. The library is a full-service institution open seven days aweek that houses a collection thatincludes 303,825 books, 20,876 DVDs,cds and videotapes and 188 specializeddatabases. The library has 20,095 regis-

• tered borrowers and subscribes to 427magazines. There are 48 public'accesscomputers.

During the course of a year 428,108visits are made to the Freeport MemorialLibrary. The library offers programsranging from toddler story time toEnglish As a Second Language classesas well as a homework help program forstudents. There are also numerousevents for adults and children includingmusic, literature, art and current events

programs. The library circulates235,175 items during a year and the staffat the public service desks answered73,292 questions during the past year. There are 26 community groups thatmeet monthly at the six meeting roomsin the library as well as other town meet-ings.

Where would everyone go for thiswealth of programs and knowledge?

Mr. Levinson is right that people shouldbe concerned about taxes. He is also cor-rect that perhaps it is time to find otherways to fund libraries. Right nowlibraries, like school districts, are onlyable to raise money through taxes andbonding. Why not speak with state legis-lators about removing some of the localtax burden? State funding for our librariesbarely keeps up with. inflation, not tomention other costs, including state pen-sion contributions for municipal employ-ees.

In closing, Freeporters, and all LongIslanders, must ask the hard questionsduring hard economic times. What arewe willing to do without? Certainly notour basic freedoms. To be or not tobe...that's up to you.

Dodd robotics teamsecond in countywide event

Bomb scare at BHS

Dodd Middle School's RoboticsTeam took second place in LongIsland's Lego League RoboticsTournament at Longwood High Schoolin Middle Island in January.

The two-member team, DavidBentley and Jeffrey Rodriguez, won inthe category of "Research' andPresentation," which required studentsto perform research, develop a solution, and creatively present their robotic-based creation to solve a problem deal-ing with the ocean phenomenon knownas red tide. The two students' work wascited by one of the judges as showing"excellent insight into the topic."

Co-sponsored by the NewHampshire-based FIRST organization("For Inspiration and Recognition ofScience and Technology") and theSchool Business Partnerships of Longisland (SBPLI), the Lego program invit-ed Nassau and Suffolk County students, guided by their teacher-mentors, todesign and build an original robot.

This year's challenge, "OceanOdyssey," called for teams to researchand present robotics technology solu-tions to help ensure the health, diversity

and productivity of the world's oceans. In addit ion to Bentley and

Rodriguez, the members of Dodd'sLego Team who competed in the tour-nament were rodney Boykin, AlfredoFlores, Andrew Pardo, SteveMartinez, Keith Bedney, Joel Tapia,Evin Hendricks, Zachary Drew,Francisco Vasqucz, and Carlos Perez.

Also members of the team, but notable to compete, were BracdonPelluso, Nowell Hammond-Gibson,Arthur Kindle and Chris Sailsman. The team was coached by Dodd teach-ers James Wandzilak, Louis Inzer i l l i ,and Jason Shonfeld.

"We need to show kids that it's morefun to design and create a video gamethan it is to play one," said DeanKamen, FIRST founder. "In FIRSTLego League, kids discover career pos-sibilities and learn to make positive con-tributions to society."

Fred Breithut, founder and chairmanof SBPLI, said, "These programs areopening a world of technology, scienceand engineering to so many Long islandstudents, helping to build our high-lechworkforce of the future."

By Joan Delaney

State Senators Dean Skelos and CharlesFuschillo spoke to students in BaldwinSenior High School's Participation inGovernment classes and both the senatorsand the students seemed equally impressedwith each other.

"They were awesome," said SenatorFuschillo. "They're well-read and well-informed." Senator Skelos agreed after analmost a one-hour dialogue in which thesenators introduced legislative topics thatwould appeal to the high school seniors andthe students responded with intelligentlyworded opinions.

The senators spoke about legislation theyhave sponsored, including Megan's Law,which Senator Skelos has championed.Students asked nuanced questions, howev-er, asking if the registry for the convictedsex offenders unfairly targets the criminalswho have served their sentences. "Isn't itkind of like wearing the Scarlet Letter?"queried one student, alluding to theNathaniel Hawthorne classic novel.

Another student questioned, "Isn't itunfair to view all members in a group as thesame?" referring to the possible differencesamong offenders even within the three cat-egories. (Megan's law has Levels One, Twoand Three with released offenders having toregister for 20 years, 30 years and liferespectively).

The senators then elaborated on medicaltheories regarding pedophiles and the highrate of recidivism among such offenders.Animated discussion also ensued on pend-ing legislation concerning the civil commit-ment of violent Level Three sexual crimi-nals after they have served their regularsentences.

Senator Fuschillo, who acknowledgedthat he has been criticized for sponsoringlegislation which places greater restrictionson such activities as drinking and drivingand smoking and which some feel toostrongly curtain personal civil rights, intro-duced the topic of drunk driving with stu-dents.

The young people did not need convinc-ing on the dangers of such behavior, withseveral students suggesting that the carindustry should be required to installdevices in cars such as breathalizers orsome sort of imprint device which woulddetect unsafe levels of alcohol and preventcars from starting. Another student suggest-ed having periodic driving tests and manyagreed with the senator's suggestion thatdrivers' education include nighttime prac-tice.

When Senator Fuschillo asked if longerjail sentences would be a deterrent, one stu-dent pointed out, "If they are so impairedthat they shouldn't be driving, they areprobably also too impaired to have thejudgement to be concerned about going tojail." Most students disagreed with the sen-

ator's suggestion that the age for securing adriver's license be raised, with students notamenable to that option.

The senators used personal examples toillustrate their own advocacy on certainissues. Senator Skelos spoke of a con-

stituent in Long Beach whose granddaugh-ter was decapitated in a gruesome drunkdriving incident on the MeadowbrookParkway when the limousine they were rid-ing in was struck by a drunk driver goingthe wrong way on the highway at an exces-sive speed. He said that he keeps the masscard from the child's funeral on his desk,"so I can look at it to remind me what myresponsibility is."

Senator Fuschillo related his personalexperience with that accident, noting thatformer Freeport Fire Chief John Maguirecame to his house at 7:30 a.m. on July 4, tolet him know about that incident. He thenasked, "What do you think it will take tostop drunk driving?"

When one student suggested that perhapsthere should be some excuse level for cer-tain Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) acci-dents, especially if the driver is a teenager,Senator Skelos asked, "Are you entitled toone DWI just because you're young?"

Concluding discussion on that topic, after discussing some pretty graphic exam-ples of drunk driving casualties, SenatorFuschillo said, "We're not telling you thesethings to ruin you day or to make you nau-seous, but this is reality."

Legislation on restricting smoking inpublic areas also interested students andthey listened intently as Senator Fuschillodescribed the difficulties in getting that leg-islation passed. He called it "one of themost controversial pieces of legislation" hewas involved in.

The senators then briefly outlined a widerange of issues facing state legislators -criminal justice, education and educationalfunding, and health care - and pointed out,"State issues impact your lives more direct-ly than even the federal government."

As the meeting ended, students buzzedwith conversation . among themselves, apparently pleased by the exchanges withthe senators who thoroughly engaged thestudents in the dialogue. Student HarrisonGross told The Leader, "I enjoyed hearingthem. It's good to hear how governmentoperates and how it affects us. I agree withmost of their positions."

For their part the senators were unani-mous in describing the exchange as a "greatdialogue...provocative and insightful." Andas for the aides of the two legislators, bothwere smiling and commented, 'That wentreally well."

High School principal Susan Knors toldThe Leader, "I just wish everyone could seehow great our kids are." Senior HighSchool PTSA President Dorinda Spinelliwas smiling and commented, "Aren't ourkids great?"
