Impact For EternityBy Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries

Amadeo Giannini is an American success

story. Born to Italian immigrant parents in

1870, he entered banking in 1904. When the

San Francisco earthquake of 1906 hit, crip-

pling other banks, Giannini moved the banks

money to a safe location and was one of the

few who was able to provide loans during this

desperate time. He was actually forced to runhis bank from a plank across two

    barrels in the middle

of the street. Giannini made loans on a

handshake to anyone who was interested

in rebuilding. Years later, he would

recount with pride that every single loan

was repaid. Following a merger in 1916,

Giannini became founding chairman of Bank of America.

Understanding the importance of his work following the

devastating earthquake, Giannini said, The glad hand is all right

in sunshine, but its the helping hand on a dark day that folks

remember to the end of time.

While Giannini impacted people during their lifetimes, as be-

lievers doing service in the name of Jesus, you have the privilege

of impacting people for eternity. This is why the church places

such a high value on engaging you in applying your spiritual gifts

    in service.

Many of you joyfully experienced this last summer as First

Federated Church joined with two other churches in our com-

munity to provide a summer fun-fest for the residents of the

    Oakridge neighborhood housing complex.

This year two additional churches are joining the party! And

    so can you!

A highlight of this years eventin addition to the free BBQ,

childrens games, and live entertainmentis the distribution of

backpacks filled with school supplies for the children

Research Shows PeopleDying of LonelinessBy Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries

A recent report in The Newsletter of the American Institute of

Stress concludes that middle-aged men who had recently endured

high levels of emotional stress, but had little emotional support,

were three times as likely to die over the next seven years as

those with close personal t ies.Not surprisingly, God noted the same thing several thousand

years ago, saying: It is not good for man to be alone. When

God says something is not good, we should take note. The

immediate solution was the creation of the family, however, the

larger point is that you were created to live and thr ive in relation-

    ship with others.

God instilled the knowledge of this creation-fact into the

intelligence of many throughout history. For example, Cicero,

10643 BC, is generally perceived to be one of the most versatile

minds of ancient Rome. He said this about connecting in relation-

ships, Friendship makes prosperity more shining and lessens

adversity by dividing and sharing it. He understood that sharing

lifes journey is better than living in isolation.Renowned Nobel Prize winner Albert Schweitzer understood

that in times of crisis there is immense value in belonging, as he

noted, Sometimes our light goes out, but is blown into flame by

another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those

who have rekindled this light. In your darkest hour, it is another

    who can light the way.

You were created for connection. You need to travel with

others through the triumphs and trials of living in a fallen world.

Yet, more often than not, we reject the idea. Whether it is stress

or sin or Satan or selfishness or simple shyness, we choose to

pursue our spiritual journey in isolation. Alone.

The Christian life is not for Lone Rangers. That is why oneof the primary goals of the church is to unite people in biblical

community. We are striving to provide opportunities for you to

develop increasingly deeper relationships with others that can

help nurture you in your spiritual growth.

If you have a desire to experience growth in a small group and

are currently not connected, you can indicate this on the Care

and Communication Card today. In the coming months a number

of small groups will be forming to aid you in your spiritual jour-

ney. Spiritual growth happens best in the context of small groups.

Sign up to connect with a small group to enjoy spiritual growth

you will not experience in any other way.

    SummerDay Campsat FFC

    Its been a summer of

    Heroes and Champions for

    kids at Federated.

    Tower Park, adjacent to our

church property, was buzzingwith activity as the childrens

    departments of First Federated

    and First Assembly joined

    forces to sponsor Champions

    Sports Camp, June 23-27.

    One hundred thirty-six boys

    and girls enjoyed learning

new skills in their choice of

    sportssoccer, baseball,

    basketball, cheerleading or

tae kwon do. The week was

    also filled with music, stories,

games and snacks as the kidslearned what it takes to be real

    champions for the Lord.

    Kids who attended our

    Heroes Arts Camp, July 14-

18, had a busy week as they

    prepared and presented a play

about heroes in the Bible. The

    children learned new drama

    skills and created their own

    hero costumes. Other kids

were part of the media team,

    recording the events of the

week as they learned new tech-nical skills. Cool water games,

    yummy snacks and fun music

were also a part of each day.

    Thanks to the many

    volunteers who helped make

our summer camps a great suc-

    cess! Pray that childrens lives

    will continue to be impacted

    by the truths theyve learned

    this summer.

    MISSIONS

Short-Term Mission OpportunityAgape Medical Mission in Russia needs laborers to go to

Siberia this September. There are two different trips, September

    621 or September 27October 12.

Both are medical-evangelism. However, you dont have to be

a medical person to go. You can go to talk to people through an

interpreter. Youll find they are cur ious to know why you came

so far to do this. It leads easily into a conversation where you canshare Christ.

Another thing that non-medical people can do is fit people

with reading glasses. This can be taught in 45 minutes once you

    get to Russia.

Donna Stanger will be going on the first tr ip. Since youll need

a passport and visa to go, a decision to go must be made soon. If

interested in serving God and his work in Russia on one of these

trips, contact Donna Stanger or John Porter.

    Turkey ReportBy Pat Anderson

First, a big thank you to all of those who supported me

financially and in prayer. My travel time was long but uneventful.

We stayed about 30 minutes south of Izmir (Smyrna), Turkey.

We had a little room that housed my sister and me, her grandson

    and his friend from

    his China missionary

    days. It was a little

    crowded but very suf-

    ficient with a modern

    bathroom.

    The children in our

    care were wonderful,

but it took them a day

or so to get to knowus. We cared for the

0 to 3 yr olds and by

the end of the day, we were ready for bed. Above is a picture of

some of the childcare workers; actually, we numbered around

    20. A highlight was getting to go on a tour of Ephesus with

the missionaries. You couldnt help thinking Im walking on

    streets where the apostle Paul

walked. The parts of the city

    that they have uncovered are

    amazing. (see picture)

    As always, when with

    missionaries, I realize the

tremendous heart they havefor these people who are so

    different in every way from

    our culture. They were so

    grateful for the refreshing

time at the conference and being able to attend meetings without

being distracted by little ones. I would recommend a short term

mission trip to anyone. You dont have to be particularly talented,

just available. You go to be a blessing, but youre the one who

    comes away blessed!

    Hanson, on July 17

Family and friends of John J. Croy. John died on July 17.

Thank YouWe want to thank the Federated Family. You have been God

in person to both of us. The cards, visits, calls, meals and most

of all the prayers are so appreciated for the last 4 months. The

top and bottom parts of the femur have come together 1/4 inch

since June 25th. Now we are praying for significant bone growth

    around the break.

The doctor believes it may take two more months. The Lord

has held us up through this time and will continue to for the next

few months in His special way.

    Thank you,Jim and Dannetta Feleay

Summer Nurses Notesfrom Your Parish NurseInformation about sunscreen coverage protection from the Mayo Clinic, June 2008

Carefully read the product label to determine if theres

sunscreen coverage to protect skin from both ultraviolet A (UVA

and ultraviolet B (UVB) light. UVA rays are deep penetrating

and are a major factor in premature aging of skin. UVB rays

primarily affect the skins surface and are the main cause of

    sunburn.

The sun protection factor (SPF) on a product label is a

measure of protection from UVB light. If a product is labeled as

broad-spectrum, it offers protection against both UVA and UVB

light, although the level of UVA protection isnt clearly stated.

The Food and Drug Administration is trying to standardizelabeling for UVA protection with a four-star rating system for

(UVA), which you should see appear in the near future, but it is

    still under review.

The best advice for now is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen

product applied liberally 15-30 minutes before going outdoors.
