• Chairman’s Notes •

Milk Cup 2008, it hardly seems like 12 months since the 25th tournament which was such a major success. There is little doubt that it is one of the best, if not the best, youth football tournament in the world. On behalf of the County Londonderry Football Association I would like to congratulate Victor Leonard and his fellow committee members for the continued excellence of the competition and thank them for the opportunities that they have provided for our young footballers to test their skills against teams from all over the world.

Junior & Premier Team Managers Gary Faulkner and Paddy McGonigle have, along with their management teams, been working tirelessly with their selected squads since early May and are happy with the commitment and progress that the boys have shown in the build up to the competition. The two managers held exhaustive trials throughout the County ensuring that the squads selected were the very best available

The draw as always, was a very professional

event, with the Milk Cup Committee securing the then Chelsea manager Avram Grant to complete the proceedings. Gary & Paddy agree that while the draw is challenging they are relishing the prospect. The Juniors take on Wolves in the first match at Anderson Park Coleraine where a strong support is anticipated. The second match is against Aspire from Quatar and the hope is that we will be playing for a place in the Milk Cup top group. The Premier team face Milk Cup newcomers in both ties with Hartlepool Utd on Monday and Hertha Berlin the following day, Paddy and the boys can’t wait.

We are indebted to all our sponsors for their continued support particularly Ballyrashane Creamery, DPD formerly Interlink Express and Grafton Recruitment plus the local councils and Education & Library Boards. In addition all contributors to the programme give invaluable assistance, many thanks to you all.

The hard work that the members of The County Londonderry Milk Cup Committee put in throughout the year ensures that the teams are professionally equipped and fully prepared for the tournament, I would like to thank them all for their commitment to the County

Finally I would like to welcome all the visiting teams to the 2008 N. I. Milk Cup, I am sure that you will have a great week. Best wishes to all the players officials and organisers, may the best teams win.

With no home Countries to cheer on at Euro 2008 hopefully everyone has saved their passion to cheer on the home County at Milk Cup 2008. Once again I am honoured to manage the County Londonderry Junior Team at this years Milk Cup. Twenty years on from when I played in the competition and it just gets better and better. After difficult decisions and countless hours of trials and training the Squad are ready to prove themselves. If they can emulate the 2006 Junior side I had then I will be very pleased. On that note I am delighted so many of that squad have now made the Premier side and I wish Paddy McGonigle and our Premier boys a very successful competition.

The Junior team have Wolves and Aspire from Qatar to contend with and Wolves may get a surprise as we have our own Steve Bull in our ranks.

I would like to thank the County Committee and my back-room staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes and their support is crucial to the preparations. Thanks also to Limavady High School for the training facilities and Ian and Marshall who never let us down. Thanks also to the local Clubs for their

support and their coaches who nurture these players and send them for trials. A big appreciation to all the parents whose dedication in transporting their sons to training was vital. Finally to the boys, don’t spend August saying if only I had done - Do It. Have no regrets, enjoy the tournament and the experience and have the self belief to equal your talents”.

Ray Kelly Squad No: 1

Ray plays for the hugely successful Foyle Harps club from Derry City. He is a fantastic shot stopper and his speed and fitness make him excellent in one on one situations. A great character who spreads enthusiasm throughout the squad. Certainly a name to remember for the future and one of the best goalkeepers the County set up has seen.

Kevin Barry McIntyre Squad No: 2

Ballymoor’s “KB” as everyone knows him, is a class act. A superb all rounder who is equally as impressive in midfield as he is at Centre half. A determined defender and skillful in possession. One of the characters of the squad. His dry wit and comical demenour make him an asset in the camp and a crucial member of the team.

The big Eglinton man moulds himself on his hero Rio Ferdinand. Like Rio he is tall commanding centre half who is comfortable on the ground, he loves to calmly stride out of defence with the ball and start attacks. A product of Limavady Youths and Newtown Youths he is vital to the squad’s hopes of success.

Dermot McWilliams Squad No: 5

The Wee Man from Kilrea with the big heart. Fiesty and competitive Dermot is a pacey winger who is a great crosser of the ball and a good finisher. An avid Man Utd fan who names Roy Keane as his footballing hero but plays more like a young Kanchelskis. One of three players from Ballymena United’s Academy.

Sam Boylan Squad No: 6

The “Joker in the pack”. A real live wire. The Coleraine lad is a fanatical supporter of his home town club and names Stephen Carson as his idol, despite playing for Ballymena! Despite coming from the City, Lewis plays his football for Limavady Youths and Newtown Youths. One of the fittest and most tenacious players in the squad, he is an excellent man marker. His attitude and personality make him a joy to work with. A Leeds Utd supporter whose hero is Maradona-” because he’s class”. Lewis will play anywhere, and could make a big impact.

Another of the Ballymoor contingent. “Mitch is a classy play-maker. With good close control and excellent short passing game. Mixed with the ability to spread the play he is similar to Xabi Alonso from his beloved Liverpool. When in a confident mood he can run the game form the middle of the park.

Che Bradley Squad No: 9

Che is from Coleraine and is a product of the Triangle FC School of Soccer. A versatile no nonsense defender. Che is a focused centre back who makes up for his lack of inches with tremendous spirit, commitment and attitude. Cathair Friel Squad No: 10

Cathair is from Drumsurn and is another product of Limavady Youths and Newtown Youths. His pace and power and eye for goal mean he can operate on either wing or upfront. He matches his hero Steven Gerrard in energy levels and work rate, whilst also being a free-scoring match winner like his favourite player Torres.

Jordan Mclaughlin Squad No: 11

Foyle Harps prodigy Jordan is the most improved member of the squad. A natural talent and true artist on the ball. He can craft space and chances and is a dead ball specialist like his hero David Beckham. Much of the squads chance of success will depend on Jordan’s impact and self belief. Certainly a star for the future.

Patrick Mcguigan Squad No: 12

One of the few left footed players in the squad, but what a sweet left peg. He plays his club football with Moyola and has the potential to play at the top level. Comfortable in possession and difficult to pass the modest Castledawson lad is a hard hitting full back. Despite his quiet nature he is a leader on the pitch.

Ciaran Villa Squad No: 13

A committed trainer who the rest look to for inspiration. A great character who loves every new challenge. The Oxford midfielder is one of the best headers of a ball to come through the Junior ranks. Tough tackling and hard working he is a leader on and off the pitch in the Roy Keane mold. If he plays to his potential, a career in football awaits.

Kyle Curran Squad No: 14

A product of Don Boscos and more recently Ballymoor. Kyle has explosive power, pace and a ferocious shot. Combined with balance and strength he is difficult to dis-possess. A member of the Northern Ireland Victory Shield squad, a career in the professional game awaits him. Wolves beware because Kyle is Derry’s own Steve Bull.

Steven Millar Squad No: 15

The Portstewart right-back plays his football at Ballymena United Academy. One of the most committed players, who always wants to learn and seeks to improve. A no-nonsense hard hitting defender resembling Gary Neville in his attributes. His heroes are George Best and Christiano Ronaldo and his ambition is to play in the Milk Cup Final.

Ruari lynch Squad No: 16

The Don Bosco’s striker has more than a canny resemblance in style to his hero Henrik Larsson. A Spurs supporter who consistently scores goals. A naturally gifted player who has two good feet and a hunger to score. Despite his small frame he is a great header of the ball and difficult to dis-possess and hopefully he carry his goalscoring form into the competition.

gordon Douglas Squad No: 17

The big Coleraine lad plays his football for his local club East End. An old fashioned centre forward who works tirelessly for his team mates. Gordon’s physique, athleticism and dedication make him a defenders nightmare and a real handful. He is a dream partner for any of the other strikers and plays the game with a smile on his face.

Jason Dixon Squad No: 18Limavady Youths and Newtown Youths Number 1. A commanding keeper who pulls off extraordinary saves. His approach and dedication will see him go far in the game. He rates John Terry as the person he most admires (not because of his penalty taking) but because he is a Chelsea fan who emulates his professionalism and will to will. Along with Ray the County has two class keepers.

Local Milk Cup hopefuls are about to achieve what David Beckham, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch have all managed – to play at the North Coast tournament.

The County Londonderry Milk Cup Junior and Premier squads were revealed at a launch in the Radisson Hotel, in Limavady, where special guest Alfie Stewart told the young players to follow the advice of their coaches.

The man who won league and cup glory with Portadown and Glentoran said: “Listen to your coaches and you will do well. Don’t listen and the tournament will slip away from you.”

Stewar t , who won four league championships, once with the Glens and three times in his spell at Shamrock Park and four Irish Cup medals, one with the Ports and three at Glentoran, was a model professional and a tremendous servant to the game.

He told the boys: “It has been hard work getting selected to the County team. Over 33 trials and training sessions down to the final selection and you can be proud that each and every one of you are among the top players in the Province.

“I have been involved at senior level and I know the dedication and commitment needed to succeed. You need to be self-motivated, fearless and have belief in your own ability.

“Listen intently to your coaches. They have the experience needed to help you achieve, they have probably seen it all before and can give god advice, so take it on board.

“I believe the Northern Ireland Milk Cup is a magnificent tournament. You will

county Milk cup Hopefuls Out to emulate the Stars names

meet and make new friends and colleagues through the competition.

“Enjoy the opportunity of matching yourselves against players at professional clubs and you will do well.

“Normally, I am sitting with the parents on a night like this so I know what the parents are going through. Countless journeys in all weathers to make sure you get to training and trails and as for the mothers, you probably have no interest in football whatsoever!

“My wife was like that. During my playing career, I think she watched me play twice but, when my son became involved in the County teams, she has hardly missed a Milk Cup tournament. She loves it and so does my daughter.

“So, to all you parents, thank-you for your dedication to the boys and do go along to the games but remember, the team is picked by the managers, give them your support, they have the final say on selection and who plays and in what games.”

Welcoming guests, parents, coaches and players, County Londonderry Committee Vice-Chair Darren Mornin, introduced the speakers who included the Mayor of Limavady, Cllr. Edwin Stevenson; Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr. Maurice Bradley; Nigel Kemps, of sponsors Ballyrashane Creamery; Victor Leonard, chairman of the Northern Ireland Milk Cup and County committee chairman Frank Trainor.

The Junior squad was introduced by team manager Gary Faulkner, followed by the Premier team introduced by head coach Paddy McGonigle.

Mr. Mornin went on: “To run these two teams take finance, and we are indebted

once again to Ballyrashane Creamery and I know Mr. Nigel Kemps, will take back our gratitude to Ballyrashane Creamery who have been supporting us since 1992

“I would also like to acknowledge Grafton Recruitment, another of the County team sponsors, represented here tonight by Linda Alloway.”

The Mayor of Limavady, Councillor Edwin Stevenson, paid tribute to the Milk Cup and to the County Londonderry managers and players who had come through such a hard selection process to reach the final squad.

“This is a great tournament and we at Limavady Council fully support the Northern Ireland Milk Cup and the County teams.”

Mr. Nigel Kemps, Ballyrashane Creamery said: “Ballyrashane Creamery’s management and directors are once again pleased to be

sponsoring the County teams. As a local business we are delighted to support our County and I would take this opportunity to congratulate the boys who made the final selection.

“I’m sure this must have been a difficult task for the coaches but, those selected have a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in a great competition that has seen some great players begin their career.

“I would ask the players to give commitment to their coaches who have worked hard to bring the teams to this stage. Remember to listen and abide by their decisions and you will all have a great tournament,” he concluded.

The Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr. Bradley congratulated the boys on their selection to the Junior and Premier squads.

He said: “I played the game from the age

Page 49: 2008 - County Londonderry F.A

47

County Londonderry Premier Team squad pictured with Nigel Kempts Left Ballyrashane Creamery and manager Paddy McGonigle

of 14 to 52. The first team I played for in the Coleraine League was the Tuf Shoe Factory, I think my first game was against a Limavady team called Lislane, and the last was in the Tullans colours at Upperlands, and in between, I played in exotic places like Dervock, Ballybogey, Bendooragh and Bushmills, I even played for a team in Limavady called Gorteen.

“Nothing takes the place of pulling on a pair of boots. The butterflys the the stomach, the thrill of running out onto the pitch, feelings that never leave you.

“Football is a family. There is a place for each and everyone of us in that family. My place in the family was at junior level, and I loved every minute of it, every game played, every ball kicked.

“I have been watching the Milk Cup for years. The County teams have progressed year on year and I think this year will be

no exception. This is an opportunity for you young boys to showcase your talent against the best players in the world at this age. I believe you can do it, I will be watching you do it.

“But you need discipline, you must not forget that. I was at Windsor Park for the Irish Cup Final and although Coleraine were beaten, I felt a very proud man. Proud because every player gave 100% for the team and that is what you must do.

“Your parents here tonight and during the games will be proud of you if you give no less than 100% commitment, 100% effort and no coach can ask for more than that.

“Above all, it is a great tournament, so enjoy it. Play hard and make sure you have a memorable experience, who knows, one day there could be a Beverland, a Dooley or a McInnis at Old Trafford, or better still Stamford Bridge,” he concluded..

From the Dugout

It’s so difficult to believe that a year has passed by since last year’s 25th Anniversary tournament , it just seems like yesterday !! For the next two years I have been given the task of managing the Premier Squad which is both a great honour and privilege , I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead .In preparation for the 2008 tournament the

management team and myself decided to approach the selection process slightly differently by starting the process earlier .In fact we began the trial process the Friday after Christmas 2007 , holding the first trial in Moyola Park, Castledawson. We did this so as to be able to get to every corner of the County and give every player in the County ample opportunities to attend an open trial. From these open trials we held a series of trial games , then identified a training squad of 30 players . Throughout April we trained and played another series of games and from that developed the final panel of 18 players.Choosing a final squad takes time , effort and a

great deal of teamwork so I would like to thank my management team and the County Committee for their invaluable work , the countless hours given at trials, trial matches and training and their professional approach in helping to prepare the squad . Without doubt we have assembled a very talented squad of players and I pay tribute to their dedication, support and commitment in preparing for the tournament . A special thanks to their Mums’ and Dad’s for getting them to and from trials , training and matches .I would also like to pay tribute to all Managers,

coaches and committee members of the Youth football clubs across the County , their support and co-operation has been fantastic , I would like to thank them personally for that .On our draw for the first two days of competition

, Hartlepool and Hertha Berlin . These will be

interesting games as I’m sure both teams will have their own styles of play but all we can do is prepare the boys professionally for the games and make sure they give 100% commitment . No matter how good a team you are , you need that little bit of luck along the way so , I’m quietly confident that with a little “rub of the green” we can get enough points to assure us of getting into the Milk Cup proper . If we set that as our initial target then the rest of the week will take care of itself and the players will need no further motivation to progress in the tournament. Finally, I would like to wish Gary and his

management team and the Junior Squad players every success in the tournament and hope that all the visitors to the tournament have a good time , enjoy the football and have everlasting memories of this great part of Northern Ireland.

Yours in sportPaddy McGonigle

THE Eat in Colour campaign has launched a new initiative.

As the business end of the footie season begins, Eat in Colour has announced its fruit & veg 1st XI.

Manager Kevin Pea-gan clearly has his work cut out. Although this crop of players is teeming with raw talent they are a bit soft, which opposing teams will look to exploit.

Pea-gan will need to look after Ashley Kale as he is a bit green behind the ears and has been known to get caught out at the back. On a more positive note, Michael Onions is adept at peeling off defenders and the central midfielder partnership of Robbie Cabbage and Gary Swede are past masters at putting the wind up the opposition.

Anthony Levy, chairman of Eat in Colour, said: “The Eat in Colour United team has been assembled to launch www.eatincolour.com/footy

“Eat in Colour has taken the lead from Premiership clubs and teamed up with top BDA dieticians who have worked with Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn and Tottenham Hotspur.

“Together we’ve created a downloadable match fit meal planner to give young footballers the best possible tips for getting match fit, with easy to follow recipes and serving suggestions ideal for parents. This is part of the campaign’s goal to get families, and especially children, to experience fruit and vegetables as the quick, easy and tasty way to score a healthy diet.”

“Other players to watch include Jonathan Woodgrape and John Cherry, although they do have a tendency to bunch together in central defence. Goalkeeper Jens Lemon

is first class but his relationship with his previous club manager famously turned sour.

Nicky Gilbert, BDA dietician, who has advised star players from Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City and Blackburn, added: “Diet plays an extremely important role in ensuring budding Beckhams are in peak condition on match day. Fresh fruit and vegetables are an important part of every professional footballer’s diet and the Eat in Colour website has a host of easy to make match fit recipes ideal for the football stars of tomorrow.”

The Eat in Colour Campaign has been created by the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC), the trade association committed to the support and development of the United Kingdom fruit and vegetable industry. The campaign has secured financial backing from producers and importers across the industry as well as Tesco, Asda and Somerfield to commence an ambitious programme of communication and education.

The Fresh Produce Consortium is the trade association which represents producers, packers, importers, wholesale, food service, retailers and floral within the UK fresh produce and floral industry.
