Head Coach Pat Tyson Second-year head coach Pat Tyson has the Gonzaga University cross country and track pro-grams on the upswing after just one short year. Bulldog athletic director Mike Roth announced the hir-ing of the Spokane coaching legend in May, 2008, to become the first fulltime cross country/track and field coach in the his-tory of the program. “From the day this job was open I had people calling me to endorse Pat for this position,” Roth said. “He was obviously the people’s choice and it didn’t take long for him to become our choice. We’re excited about the excitement we expect him to bring to the program. His reputation and record speak for itself.” Tyson hit the recruiting trail his first season, and although he got a late start in the process he brought in several new talented performers. By the time the 2009-10 season rolled around, Tyson and the Bulldogs were off and run-ning. With more than 50 runners on the combined men’s and women’s roster, Tyson is more excited than ever about the future of cross country and track and field at Gonzaga. Tyson, who spent the 2008 spring season as head track and field coach at South Eugene, Ore., High, has been looking forward to the challenge from the day he was hired. “I’m going full circle back to Spokane,” said the former Mead High cross country head coach and track assistant. “The Pacific Northwest is such a rare place in the history of distance running in America. It’s the roots of one of greatest who ever came along in Gerry Lindgren (former Rogers High of Spokane, Washington State University, USA Olympian and international distance stand-out in the 1960’s). You have the Greater Spokane League and the buzz of distance running through-out the Northwest and the West Coast, and here you have GU saying we’re ready to connect to this and willing to let this thing grow to the highest level. That is intriguing. That is cool.” He believes Gonzaga can - and will - com-pete with the likes of West Coast Conference foe University of Portland, which has won every men’s team title since the inception of the WCC

Cross Country Championships in 1979 and has also dominated the women’s side since it became

a WCC sport. His goal the first year was to prove the prognosticators wrong when it came to the West Coast Conference Championship. The coaches picked the Bulldogs to finish sixth in both the men’s and women’s races. The men finished sixth, just eight points out of fifth and the women finished a competitive seventh. “There’s no doubt when you come in your first year you in-herit what you get,” Tyson said. “You take what you are given and do the best you can. Every year I’ve started a program it’s been that way, from my high school days at Shorecrest and

into the collegiate jobs I’ve had at Kentucky and now at Gonzaga.” And he thinks the Bulldogs made great strides in year one. “We have guys and gals who are competitive and know what it takes to be competitive,” Tyson said. “They know they are here for two sports – cross country and track – and that it is a year-round commitment.” Tyson joined the Mead staff in 1986 and by the time he had left the Panthers at the end of the 2003-04 school year he had produced 12 Washington State Cross Country team titles, nine individual cross country champions and 17 indi-vidual track and field distance champions (1,600 meters and above). Several of his distance run-ners also dot the All-Time Top 100 List for the state of Washington. He took a leave of absence from Mead in the spring of 2005 and went to the University of Oregon as a volunteer coach, re-turning to Mead for the 2005-06 season. Tyson spent the 2006-07 school year at the University of Kentucky, overseeing the Wildcats’ men’s and women’s cross country teams and distance run-ners, then accepted the South Eugene position this past January. Prior to his 18-year stint at Mead he coached three seasons at Shorecrest High in Seattle where his cross country squads went 31-3 and qualified for the State Meet all three years with titles in 1985 and ‘86 at Spokane’s Hangman Val-ley Golf Course. He also coached at Shoreline

Assistant Coach Jared Cramer

Jared Cramer returns for his second season as an assistant coach after re-uniting with his former running mentor Gonzaga head coach Pat Tyson in 2008. A 4-year letterwinner at Mead, Cramer re-ceived the Matt Zweifel Inspiration Award during his senior cross country season. He attended Eastern Washington University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science. A certified massage therapist, he spent the 2007-08 school year as a cross country and track assistant coach for his alma mater. Cramer married the former Jessie Arnold in 2009, a graduate of Spokane’s Gonzaga Prep.

Second Year at Gonzaga; Eastern Washington University, 2007

Junior High from 1973-82 while compiling a 68-12 junior high record. Tyson’s distance running legacy has deep roots. He ran cross country and track collegiately at the University of Oregon and was a roommate and teammate of the late Steve Prefontaine who won NCAA titles in both cross country and track. As a Duck he competed in two NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing 33rd in the 1971 meet and 54th in the 1972 championship while helping Oregon to first and third-place fin-ishes, respectively. He graduated in 1973, leaving as one of the top six runners in Duck history in the outdoor 3-mile and 6-mile. In addition to building on a strong cross country foundation already in place at Gonzaga - the women won the 1995 WCC team title and the men finished second to Portland for nine straight years from 1987-95 and most recently had run-ner-up finishes in 2003 and ‘04 - Tyson will ex-pand the Bulldogs track and field program. “We will continue to be a distance running Division I collegiate program like Georgetown, Villanova, Iona, Providence, American University, Colorado, Wisconsin, Stanford and Portland,” Tyson said. “I don’t know if we’ll get to the point where we have full-fledged track and field, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have the elements of track and field.” He also said the Northwest will be his prime

recruiting area. “Recruiting will definitely start in the North-west. We have it. I think I can do it,” he said. And with that he has the Gonzaga program off and running.

Year two of the Pat Tyson era should bring more improvement to Gonzaga University’s cross country and track and field programs if the prog-ress made in year one is any indication. And the second-year head coach is excited about the upcoming season, assembling what he believes is a strong nucleus for what will continue to evolve into a strong program. “There’s no doubt when you come in your first year you inherit what you get,” Tyson said. “You take what you are given and do the best you can. Every year I’ve started a program it’s been that way, from my high school days at Shorecrest and into the collegiate jobs I’ve had at Kentucky and now at Gonzaga.” But the man who made his legacy as the 18-year head cross country coach at Mead High is convinced the program has already turned the corner. “We have guys and gals who are competitive and know what it takes to be competitive,” Tyson said. “They know they are here for two sports – cross country and track – and that it is a year-round commitment.” He has a couple of veterans returning on the men’s side who may be ready for breakthrough seasons. Junior Matt Bejar finished 17th at last year’s West Coast Conference Championship and soph-omore Brett Withers placed 33rd. They return this season as co-captains to anchor the men’s squad. In addition to Bejar and Withers, Tyson also looks for Andrew Walker to be in the thick of the competition for a top seven spot. “Andrew was on our squad last year as a freshman and showed good signs in the track sea-son last spring. He’s looked great in practice this season. You have to throw him in the mix,” Tyson said. Junior Ian Berge is a runner Tyson said “is on the bubble” for a top seven spot and “he is working hard to maintain being in the top seven.” Berge finished 44th in last year’s WCC Championship. One of the newcomers Tyson is expecting to make a top seven spot is Brian Hernandez, a freshman out of San Rafael, Calif. “Our kids are asking, ‘Who is this guy.’ He brings a lot to the table with desire, work and pas-sion,” Tyson noted. Ben Lance, a freshman from Mill Creek, Wash., placed in the State track meet last spring in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. He has an injury but “will be a factor his season,” accord-ing to Tyson. Freshmen Jared Gregorio, Denver, Colo.; Patrick Richie, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Jared Chris-tian Springfield, Ore., and Christian Burger, Port-land, Ore., are newcomers Tyson thinks will chal-lenge for spots this year and be the foundation for the future. Throw into that mix Gonzaga Prep freshman Tate Kelly from Spokane and Lucas Rothenberg-

er, a freshman transfer from Loyola Marymount University who joined the Bulldogs for track last spring, and Tyson likes the make-up of the team. “You know Tate will be in the top seven if he stays healthy, and the others are battling for po-sitions. We’ve got an arsenal. There’s no entitle-ment allowed this year,” Tyson said. On the women’s side, veteran Laura Volcheff returns for her junior campaign after finishing 34th in last year’s WCC Championship. And Tyson said there’s plenty of competition for her this season. “Laura has a posse of young ladies who look to be as good as her which is exciting for her be-cause she is all about the team,” Tyson said. That competition begins with senior Molly Funk, 40th in the WCC Championship last fall; Corrina O’Brien, a senior who finished 44th in the WCC meet last season, and Elizabeth Slamkows-ki, who is back as a sophomore after being injured most of last season. “Molly is back and was coming on strong in the 5,000 last spring. Corrina is more of an 800 runner but did her homework over the summer and is in the mix. Liz is healthy and would have helped us last year, so we’re excited about her be-ing back and healthy,” Tyson said. Sophomore Molly Moore also returns and, according to Tyson, “is a veteran out there with the top dogs.” And Tyson is exceptionally excited about the newcomers. “You have to love the newbies,” he said. “Brenn Donnelly, a transfer from Loyola Mary-mount, brings a lot to the plate. Lauren Bergam from Spokane’s East Valley is competitive. Lacey Nation from Marysville is a State track and field placer who loves to compete and is right in the mix.” One big surprise is Kayla Lloyd out of Hood River who was on campus last year but did not compete. “If she stays healthy she has the possibility to finish in the top 10 in the conference. We could have a few young ladies in the top 20,” the ever-upbeat Tyson said. Tyson said the competition on both the men’s and women’s side is the best thing to happen to help improve the team. “That is awesome,” Tyson said not only of the number of runners but of the quality of athletes. “That’s what they needed. Those kids back who were maybe on the team are looking at it more like this is the real world, not that they (newcomers) are taking spots. When you are sixth or seventh in the conference you have to look to something to stimulate it.” “The women look way improved over last year, along with the men. How good we are going to be I don’t know,” Tyson said. “It depends on if the other schools upgraded like we did. I would think anybody who has been involved with the pro-gram would say this is the most potential talent ever at Gonzaga, but it is all young.”

Josh burrows Performance Athletic Center

Josh Burrows had a vision and Gonzaga University had a need. The two culminated into what you see before you today, the Josh Burrows Per-formance Athletic Center. His vision was to provide Gonza-ga University and its student-athletes the winning edge in sports science, emphasizing state-of-the-art sports training methods. That vision has now become a reality. A 1979 graduate of Gon-zaga University and long-time Spokane resident, Josh has always been interested in dynamic sports training. He has spent countless hours re-searching and identifying im-proved means of increasing athletic performance, some of it through his own athletic training. With the dedication of the Josh Burrows Performance Center, “JB”, as he is affec-tionately known by the stu-dent-athletes, will be remem-bered as the “father of fitness” within the Bulldogs Athletics Family, as student-athletes for years to come will reap the re-wards of his vision.

The Gonzaga University Athletic Training facilities in Martin Centre were undersized and under equipped to keep up with the momentum of Gonzaga Athletics. With an apparent and immediate need looming, GU Athletics began raising funds for a new facility. Construction of the Diedrick/DeLong Athletic Training Center finished in Oct. of 2008. The facility meets the needs of all Gonzaga University athletes and enhances the ability to train and rehabilitate the student-athletes using the newest techniques and treatments.

When the West Coast Conference got its start back in 1952, the founders really had one goal in mind - to cre-ate a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision 54 years ago is a marvelous cohesive athletics league which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the Western United States. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in athletics and academics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and wom-en’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State, and Santa Clara) as the California Basketball Association, play-ing its first game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the con-ference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened to “West Coast Con-ference” in 1989. The current full-time lineup of WCC schools has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the country. Gonzaga joined the West Coast Conference for men’s cross country during the 1979-80 school year finishing seventh in its first season. The Bulldogs have never won the WCC men’s championship as the University of Portland has won every team championship since the 1979 season. Gonzaga did put together a string of nine consecutive second place fin-ishes from 1987-95 in which the Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA West Regionals in each of those years. The 1994 and 1995 seasons saw GU place second at West Regionals and make two additional NCAA trips. Gonzaga’s top points finish in the WCC came in 1993 when it posted a 41 team score, finishing just 13 points behind Portland. Jon Neill holds the school record for Gonzaga at the WCC Championships, posting a 25:28 mark in the 8K course to finish third in the 1994 event. Gonzaga joined the West Coast Conference for women’s cross country during the 1987-88 school year. Since that season Gonzaga has competed in every WCC champi-onship winning the team title in 1995 and the individual title in 1996. Former Gonzaga runner Cheska Fairbanks set the WCC record for the 5K with a time of 17:26 en route to winning the individual title. Fairbanks would go on to finish 14th in the NCAA Champion-ships in 1996 and earn All-America honors. Since joining the WCC Gonzaga has had 43 first-team All-WCC runners (24 men, 19 women), 35 honorable mention selections (24 men, 11 women) and 51 All-Academic selections (30 men, 21 women). As for its overall success, the WCC has annually advanced at least one team to a national championship semifinal since 1989. League members have also won 34 NCAA team and individual championships.

Gonzaga Academic Success Gonzaga coaches take an active role in monitor-ing the academic standing of their athletes. Coaches require student-athletes to attend study table when on the road for an extended period, and several coaches have also adopted a study table policy at home. If a student-athlete is struggling academically, there are several avenues of help available. Tutors are available specifically for student-athletes, and student-athletes can also utilize the general Gonzaga University tutors, study labs and computer work sta-tions available to the entire student population. The success of the attention paid to the academ-ic welfare of the student-athletes is reflected in their performance in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, 85 student-athletes earned their way on to the President’s List with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher, and 80 were on the Dean’s List with a GPA of 3.5-3.69. Overall, Gonzaga’s 300-plus stu-dent-athletes combined for a 3.22 GPA for the spring semester, maintaining their cumulative GPA of 3.21. Gonzaga student-athletes constantly dot the West Coast Conference all-academic teams, and on a national scale 20 student-athletes have been named to CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-America squads. The Gonzaga baseball program has produced six Academic All-America accolades, including Eric Rodland and Jared Hertz, both two-time honorees.

Thayne McCulloh - President Dr. Thayne McCulloh (BA, ’89) became Gonzaga Uni-versity’s interim president in the summer of 2009, succeed-ing the eleven-year tenure of Jesuit President Father Robert J. Spitzer. McCulloh, with 19 years as a Gonzaga administrator, knows that it is his job – ‘interim’ title notwithstanding – to collaborate with other Gonzaga stakeholders and continue to build upon Fr. Spitzer’s remarkable legacy. In fall 2009, Gonzaga en-rolled its largest freshman class ever, more than 1,200 students, bringing the university overall enrollment to more than 7,500. While continued success in all ways is important to McCulloh, sustaining and reinforcing the mission of Gonzaga as a Jesuit, Catholic and humanistic institu-tion is fundamental to him. “We, as a community, are going to be led first and foremost by our University Mission, which unites us and allows us to remain focused and faithful to the charge that has been given to all of us,” McCulloh said. “Our fundamental mission is to educate men and women in an environment that is both academically rigorous and distinctively Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic.”McCulloh knows that environment well. He spent three years here as an undergraduate, earning his bachelor’s degree in psy-chology, before moving on to Oxford University to earn a doc-torate in experimental social psychology. He returned to Gon-zaga in 1990 and has held numerous positions – and worked on many projects – over the past 19 years. These include service as interim academic vice president, vice president for admin-istration and planning, associate academic vice president, and dean of student financial services, among others. Gonzaga is ingrained in him. “Gonzaga is our life in a lot of ways,” said McCulloh, who with wife Julie (BA ’92, MBA ’97, Gonzaga’s dean of admission), has three daughters. “The way we choose to work

and live is with an understanding that it’s not merely ‘a job.’ We feel we are participating in something really important. It’s great to be a part of it, and it’s why we feel at home at Gon-zaga. It’s hard to draw a sharp distinction between our private life and our life at Gonzaga, as there is an awful lot that we

share, as a family, in common with others who work here. “I came to Gonzaga to get a college education, and what brought me back as an employee was the awareness that this place is about transforming women and men who have unique gifts and talents, and come from all different experiences. Here we ask students to focus on important life ques-tions, and we challenge them to think about what they want to do with their lives that will be of ben-efit to their fellow human beings. That’s a powerful and important endeavor in a world so desperately in need of it,” McCulloh said.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Washington, D.C. and Seattle, McCulloh attended Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet High School. Following high school, he completed a three-year enlistment as a food service sergeant in the U.S. Army. He arrived at Gonzaga in its centennial year (1986), served as a resident assistant and resident director, was president of Alpha Sigma Nu (the Jesuit honor society), and was elected student body president. He, Julie, and their three daughters are big fans of Gonzaga sports and attend home games when their schedules permit. McCulloh will serve as interim president pending the selection of a permanent Jesuit president by the Board of Trustees.

Mission Statement of Gonzaga University Gonzaga University belongs to a long and distinguished tradition of humanistic, Catholic, and Jesuit education. We are committed to preserving and developing that tradition and communicating it to our students and alumni. As humanistic, we recognize the essential role of human creativity, intelligence, and initiative in the construction of society and culture. As Catholic, we affirm the heritage which has developed through two thousand years of Christian living, theological reflection, and authentic interpretation. As Jesuit, we are inspired by the vision of Christ at work in the world, transforming it by His love, and calling men and women to work with Him in loving service of the human community. All these elements of our tradition come together within the sphere of free intellectual inquiry characteristic of a uni-versity. At Gonzaga, this inquiry is primarily focused on Western culture, within which our tradition has developed. We also believe that a knowledge of traditions and cultures different from our own draws us closer to the human family of which we are a part and makes us more aware of both the possibilities and limitations of our own heritage. Therefore, in addition to our primary emphasis on Western culture, we seek to provide for our students some opportunity to become familiar with a variety of human cultures. In the light of our own tradition and the variety of human societies, we seek to understand the world we live in. It is a world of great technological progress, scientific complexity and competing ideologies. It offers great possibilities for coop-eration and interdependence, but at the same time presents us with the fact of widespread poverty, hunger, injustice, and the prospect of degeneration and destruction. We seek to provide for our students some understanding of contemporary civilization; and we invite them to reflect with us on the problems and possibilities of a scientific age, the ideological differences that separate the peoples of the world, and the rights and responsibilities that come from commitment to a free society. In this way we hope to prepare our students for an enlightened dedication to the Christian ideals of justice and peace.

Green Indoor Rowing Fa-cility giving GU one of the most progressive indoor training facilities on the West Coast. The 5,225-square foot facility houses more than fifty rowing machines and three high-definition plasma televisions that are integrated into a com-

puterized rowing program that allows stu-dent-athletes to compete with each other as a team. In 2007, Roth and Gonzaga added Patterson Baseball Complex and Wash-ington Trust Field. GONZAGA UNIVERSITYUNIVERSITY ORIGIN

Gonzaga was founded in 1887 by Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., as a frontier boarding school for boys. The school has established its own unique identity since starting as a single building along the banks of the Spokane River. Named for the Jesuit Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, the patron of youth, the 122-year-old institution has grown and matured into one of the West’s premier regional universites. Gonzaga’s educational philosophy is based on the 469-year-old Ignatian model that aims to educate the whole person-mind, body and spirit - and integration of science and art, faither and reason, action and contemplation. The state Legislature accorded Gonzaga status as a University in 1912, the same year the School of Law began. The 1920’s were highlighted by the established of the School of Business Administration (1921) and the School of Education (1928). The Graduate School was launched in 1931 and the School of Engineering was created in 1934 to meet the demand sparked by the new national interest to hydroelectric projects. Enrollment swelled in the late 1940’s due largely to the G.I. Bill and women were first admitted in 1948. Situated on 94 acres of lanscaped campus located in a residen-tial section of Spokane, the Gonzaga campus continues to grow and chage with the times. Opening in the summer of 2000, Gonzaga’s School of Law building becomes the newst addition to the growing urban campus. A new Rosauers School of Education building was completed in the spring of 1994, and Jundt Art Center and Museum opened in the fall of 1995. Other campus additions in recent years are the Herak Center which houses the School of Engineering and the Jepseon Center which has the School of Business Administration as its tenants. The former Crosby Lirary was transformed into a new Student Union building.

THAT START OF JESUIT EDUCATION Founded in 1540 by Basque nobleman Ignatius of Loyola, the Society of Jesus is an order of Catholic priests and brothers, who with their lay colleagues, carry on a 469-year tradition of eduction excel-lence. While recovering from a battle wound, Ignatius’ life was changed by reading the Bible and studying the lives of the saints. His religious experiences led him to renounce the life of courtier and soldier to serve God. That inspired him to write the Spiritual Exercises, a work that would become the basis of Jesuit spirituality and mission. After studying at the University of Paris for seven years, he founded a school based on his scholarship. At the time of Ignatius’ death in 1556, Jesuits ran 33 colleg-es and universities worldwide. Georgetown University, founded in 1789, became the first American Jesuit university. There are now 112 Jesuit colleges and universities in the world, including 33 in the United States. Gonzaga University is named for Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a 16th century priest. In his effort to comfort the ill in Rome dur-ing the plague, he caught the scourge and died a young man. He is named the Patron Saint of Youth.
