Cantor’s Notes This summer, I will be teaching a Torah cantillation class. What’s that, you might ask? Cantillation is the system by which one chants Torah, Haftarah, Lamentations, Esther and sections of the Torah for the
High Holy Days. You don’t have to have an amazing voice, in fact all you need is a basic ability to read Hebrew, the resources to play a CD and the perseverance to practice once in a while. Each person in the class will be able to use the
skills they learn in order to chant a section of Torah at a Friday night service. “Let us sing to G-d.” Please join us for new music, new insight and a lot of fun!
The cantillation class will be held on Thursday nights at 8:00 pm in the Religious School building. The first class was on June 24th. Upcoming classes will be on July 1, July 8, July 22, and July 29.

About our Services Our Friday night worship is conducted in English and Hebrew. Services are every Friday evening. Our Shabbat Services are the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Fridays at 8:00 pm. We have a Family Service geared toward school age children the 2nd Friday of each month at 7:15 pm. The Rabbi will offer Birthday and Anniversary Blessings for the month at this service. We also have a Children’s Service geared toward pre-school children the 3rd Friday of each month at 7:00 pm. Please come and join us.

Senior Youth Group

Registration packets for the next school year are in the mail. Please return them as soon as possible! Summer Hebrew Lessons The dates for the four evening Hebrew classes will be Tuesdays, July 13, July 20, July 27 and August 3, 2010 from 7:30-9:00 pm. By enrolling in these classes the students will not forget as much over the long summer and will feel more prepared to start school again in September. Book Sale The Religious School book sale will be held on September 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm. At this time parents will be purchasing books for use in Religious School next year AND will be picking up the class assignments and calendars
for the year. If anyone has any Temple library books, please return them to the Temple Office as soon as possible. It does not matter how long you have had these books, we would just like them back at no penalty. Thank you for your cooperation!

As I prepared some remarks to follow the June installation of B’nai Israel’s Officers and Trustees (aka the Board), I paused to consider what, if anything, we as the Board actually got done during my first year as President. While much of what we do is mundane and often unnoticeable, there were some more obvious accomplishments as well.
We welcomed a new Cantor to B’nai Israel and with Congregational approval, recently signed a two year extension of her contract good through June of 2013. Automated external defibrillators were obtained and mounted in the Temple and Religious School last summer. Our financial software was replaced and was immediately apparent as the billing format changed and some billing bugs needed to be worked out. In December we made the switch to a new prayer book for the first time in more than twenty-five years! More recently, aging lobby furniture was replaced and before this year’s High Holy Days, a new donor wall will be mounted in the lobby to recognize significant gifts made to B’nai Israel. (More on that in next month’s bulletin.)
Behind the scenes, procedures were changed to tighten security for the high holy days. The sanctuary sound system was vastly improved and parking lot lighting was repaired. The Board struggles with the financial realities of B’nai Israel at every monthly meeting, formulating a budget in the fall and having the discipline to stick to it over the next twelve months. This year,
managing our income has been a larger issue than managing expenses.
Thinking back over a busy and sometimes controversial agenda, I owe the members of the Board a sincere thank you for all that they do; for their cooperation, diligence and hard work on behalf of our Congregation. I anticipate a busy and challenging year ahead. The newly installed Board will be up to the task, but there is much left to be done. We would like more of you to become involved. Come to a Board meeting, volunteer for a committee, help out at a Duck’s game or bingo, join the Choir in time to sing for the High Holy Days, or just come to Shabbat Services. We are open for business all summer; join us on Friday night!

B'nai Israel wants to thank Leo Cassuto, Jason Feuer, Jonathan and Michael Greene, Paul Fink, Scott Kesner, Rabbi Moss, Jarod Randall, Ellen Spergel, and our adult choir who participated in our first Music Shabbat held on Friday night June 11th. A special thank you to Cantor Ilana for the concept and development of the service and leading the service and the musicians that night. It
was a fun filled and inspiring service enjoyed by all. Anyone who wishes to play in the next one should contact Cantor Ilana.
Trip to the Greek Synagogue On Sunday October 24th, the Rabbi will lead a special NYC Jewish culture trip to the Janina Synagogue in lower Manhattan. This is the synagogue of the Greek Jewish community. During our three hours there we will receive a kosher Greek lunch and tour of the synagogue and museum. Mark the date on your calendars and more information will be forthcoming in the next bulletin.

“How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then rest afterwards.” I found this Spanish proverb and thought that we could all use this to fashion a summer rest. We worked so hard to be busy all year and now it is time to enjoy the time off.
Having said that, we will still be working on plans for next year, so enjoy your “nothingness” and think of how we can plan for an interesting next year.

Blood Drive planned for the Fall I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to those of you who helped plan and set up, and to those who stayed throughout the past blood drives to help. And, a special thanks to those of you who came to donate blood. As you all know, there is a constant need for blood, especially in the summer months, and we hope that you all try to donate as often as you are able. If you donate at a location other than our Temple, please use our donor site number 62531 so that B'nai Israel can get credit for the donation.

Debby Lyons, Vice-President in charge of Temple fundraising, has given B’nai Israel members the opportunity to raise money for the Temple while having fun at the same time. During this past year, we served ice cream cones and sundaes to customers at the Sayville Carvel, ate dinner at Applebees, bought tickets to get our cars washed, purchased sweatshirts and tee shirts with the Temple logo and worked at the concession stand at Ducks’ Stadium, while at the same time raising thousands of dollars for the Temple.
I cannot tell you how much Judy and I have enjoyed working the Ducks’ games. We have already worked three games this year and we also worked three games last year. It is so heartening to see Temple members, some of whom who have not been involved in other Temple events, coming down and working at the concession stand. There is no compensation for these four or five hours of volunteer time except the knowledge that we are performing a mitzvah for our Temple and that by our work we are helping to balance our Temple budget
without asking for more financial support from our members.
In order to make the most money for the evening, we are obligated by the Ducks to have twenty-four volunteers at each game. At the last game on June 8th, we only had eighteen workers. This means that the Ducks may not give us our full percentage of our income, plus our lessened staff meant additional wait time for some customers, while others left the line completely and went to other food venues in the stadium.
B’nai Israel really needs your help. We have over 430 Temple member families, (that’s over 800 people), so there should be no reason for there not to be more than enough workers for each game!! Our Temple families also have many young adults over the age of sixteen who are eligible to volunteer, as well.
We have four more games this summer (plus the possibility of play-off games) so you still have a chance to help. Please call Lloyd Levine at 631-475-0778 or Stacey Zurbaran at 516-695-4748 and let them know which game you can work. You are performing a mitzvah while at the same time having a good time and meeting other Temple members.

3rd Annual PRE-SHABBAT PICNIC
July 9th & August 13th
Arrive between 6:00 and 6:15 pm
Please join us for a special outdoor pre-Shabbat celebration. Bring your favorite beach chairs or picnic blanket and a ready-to-eat meal. Afterwards we will have a Family Service at 7:15 pm followed by an Oneg Shabbat. It’ll be fun for the whole family! If it is rain-ing we will be eating inside the Social Hall, so please be sure to make your meal Kosher Style.

Rosh Hashanah is the New Year, and it’s time to start the year right! Come to Temple, meet “new” people, visit with “old” friends, and prepare for the Holy days ahead. Rosh Hashanah is also the time of year when we confess our sins, as individuals and as a community, and ask for forgiveness. We pray to be entered in the Book of Life for the year to come. The Rabbis understood that the introspection necessary for the “vidui” (confession of sins) requires preparation. So, the moving service of Selichot developed. For us, at B’nai Israel, Selichot has evolved into an enjoyable and meaningful evening of prayer, song, and of course, dinner. Please join us on Saturday, September 4th at 8 PM for a complete dinner catered by Woodbury Kosher Caterers. The meal will consist of stuffed cabbage, barbeque chicken, vegetables, mushroom barley, potato kugel, tossed salad, dessert, and coffee. Recession sensitive – for the third consecutive year, we are able to keep the cost at $23.50 per person. Please R.S.V.P. by calling the Temple office at 563-1660 by August 13th and return the tear-off below with your check. We also accept credit cards. Dinner will be followed by the service which will begin at about 9:30 PM. (It is not necessary to be at dinner. You may come to the service only, if you wish.)

Donations We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.
Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.
