As some of you are aware, the Temple Board established a Long Term Planning Committee. This committee has met over the last few years to discuss issues that will affect the Temple's future.

In the same vein, I ask you: How many of you have a Long Term Plan for yourself?

I realize, of course, that your life has a high level of unpredictability. If you have younger children, every day has its surprises, and even with older ones as well.

Certainly the present economy keeps each of us guessing what tomorrow will bring. Just the other day I heard from someone who walked into her office on a Friday and by the afternoon had no job. Each of us knows that illness and accidents can pop up any time as well. As the famous prayer we recited on the High Holy Days, U'n'tanah Tokef, reminded us, no one knows what lies in store for any one during the year to come. Or as the Yiddish phrase goes, "People plan and God laughs".

In light of all of this, however, we as human beings need to plan for our futures and do plan as well, even knowing that our plans may be thwarted, frustrated, or even denied.

After all, you might have vacation plans, or retirements plans. You might have a "Bucket List" of all those special places you would like to go to or personally important things you would like to do before you "kick the bucket". You probably have that "To do" list, the things that need to get done around the house.

Well, let me ask you: what is your Long Term Plan regarding your Jewish and your Spiritual Life?

Have you thought about finding out how you can have faith and sustain it?

Have you thought about developing a prayer life both at home and in synagogue?

Have you had plans to learn more about Judaism through a program of study?

Have you thought about becoming more involved in Temple life? (Continued on page 2)

Have you thought about having a celebration for a special birthday or anniversary?

Have you thought about how you can improve yourself mentally, morally, and physically?

If you have, as a part of your Long Term Plans, thought of any or all of these things, then guess what: The time is now to do something about it!

The Temple and I are here to assist you in making these Long Term Goals a reality. Don't be the person who says, "If only I had done this or that." The only way to minimize regrets is to make your plans a reality by working on them NOW.

I also want to offer a personal invitation to each and every one one of you to join B'nai Israel, St. John Nepomucene Roman Catholic Church, and the Mosque from Selden at our annual Inter-faith Thanksgiving Service on Sunday night November 14th at 7 pm. Judy and I do wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving!

The Jewish people is the people of the book so if you are a part of this people you should learn about this book. Did you know it is called Tanach in Hebrew and what this word stands for? Did you know there are thirty-nine books to the Hebrew Bible? During the course of the year the Rabbi will teach selected readings from the Bible’s three main sections beginning with the Book of Joshua. The books will be studied from a spiritual as well as historical and literary perspectives.

The Rabbi is continuing his special Adult Education Self-study Program. This year the program will be "the Great Works of Jewish Religious Life". The class will look at the Mishnah, Midrash, Talmud, Legal Codes, Respona Literature, and the Zohar. The first introductory class will be held on Thursday night November 4th at 8 pm.

President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

While B’nai Israel is always a busy place, it seems that November is even busier than usual. Some highlights that may be of interest: We will “celebrate” Veterans’ Day on Friday evening, the 12th, with a blessing for veterans and their families. If you or a family member has served, please make a point of joining us for that service which begins at 7:15 PM. If not, come anyway as a show of your support.

Our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be on November 14th, held this year at B’nai Israel. It is a highlight of the fall season and a good chance to count our blessings along with members of neighboring Christian and Muslim congregations. It provides a great opportunity to “show off” our Temple to the community and as hosts, we look our best if we are well represented with a good turn out of Temple families. Make plans to attend, and by all means, bring the kids. We will begin at 7:00 and end early as well.

The fall Congregation meeting will be held at 8:00 PM on Monday, November 22nd. You will receive a letter of invitation shortly, with more details. In addition to an overview of activities presented by various Board members and Committee Chairpersons, we will discuss the Temple’s current financial situation and present budget plans for the calendar year ahead. To get up to the minute information on what’s happening at B’nai Israel, to ask questions, and discuss your concerns, I encourage you to join us for that important meeting.

I am sometimes frustrated by hearing feedback that has

been passed along to me second or third hand. In those cases, I can’t be sure I’m hearing the story exactly as it originated, I can’t ask for further clarification, and most important, I don’t know to whom to respond. The Congregation Meeting is a good opportunity to speak your mind, but if you prefer not to do that publicly, PLEASE come to me directly with your issues so we can address them face-to-face.

And a reminder about our Temple Youth Groups: The Senior Group has had several meetings so far and much more to come as membership increases month to month. See more information on page 11 of this bulletin. The newly reorganized Junior Group under the adult leadership of Dina Protus, Tobi Weinstein and Sarah Stant had its kick-off in October with an ice cream sundae game night for 6th through 8th graders. For more information, or to join the Junior Youth Group, call 563-1196 or email [email protected].

Last, a correction to last month’s President’s Message. We are organizing a group interested in meeting for activities of interest during weekday mornings or afternoons. The group will be open to both women AND men. Call Dot Lewis at 589-3717 or Barbara Abrams at 224-1445, or leave your name in the office for a call-back.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Joel

The Religious School Family Sabbath Service for Grade 5 will be on November 12th, 2010 at 7:15 pm so please come and worship with your entire family at this very special service!

December 4th will be the Children’s Chanukah Festival. More information will be sent home with the students.

Attention Saturday Religious School parents: Each school day ends with a service in the Sanctuary. All parents are invited to attend and participate in this service with the students.

Parking Lot Safety: Parents are to park in designated parking spaces only and please come out of your car and get your child! NO student will be allowed to cross into the parking lot without a parent!

Parents: Please check your email regularly for announcements of upcoming events and any missed assignments as this is our primary method of communication. If we do not have your current email address and you have not been receiving correspondences, please email us at [email protected] with your current email address. Please continue to bring in tzedakah, $ A Week and food for outreach!

Ritual Committee—Home Ritual From the URJ website:

My husband and I revere Shabbat, but celebrate it at home rather than at a synagogue. We go into our bedroom where we have a corner dedicated to candle lighting and prayers. We recite the Mi Sheberach, speaking the names of those who have requested prayer and those we know who need it. Also included in our ritual are the Shema, the actual candle lighting (for which I wear my tallit over my head and shoulders) and the Kaddish. We find this home Shabbat ritual very meaningful, and have done it ever since 2003. On Saturdays we end Shabbat with the Havdalah blessings to begin the new week. It's gratifying to know that many other families are welcoming Shabbat in their homes as well. Shalom!

Sue and Stephen in Weston, FL

Perhaps the above rituals are the same as what you do in your home already. For some, these may seem like too many. Maybe you have been contemplating beginning an at home Shabbat ritual but aren’t sure where to begin. The best way to start is with the desire to bring Jewish ritual into your home. The choice of which prayer or tradition is personal because it has to fit into your day in such a way as to bring your family together for a few moments of unity and communion with G-d. Rabbi is always a wonderful source as is the URJ website for ideas and information. The ritual committee is also a resource for our congregation as we are now moving forward with plans for family programs geared toward making ritual and prayer a part of your home life. As the programs take form, we hope that you and your family will join with us! If you have any ideas or wish to help out please feel free to email me at [email protected]

From my home to yours with Shalom,

Terri Randall, Ritual Chairperson.

Another High Holy Day season has come and gone and once again the congregants of B’nai Israel Reform Temple opened their hearts and wallets helping those in need in our community. The year 5771 started out with the coat room brimming with grocery bags; I believe it was the most that we have ever collected. Three food pantries and five families received food and other items. Food cards amounting to $815 were also donated. Those cards will help our families to supplement their food budget.

I want to thank all those who donated food and food cards. I also want to thank Alice, Barbara, Helene and Liz who came in to sort and separate the groceries and Charlie, Donna and Howard for delivering an enormous amount of food to the Sayville Pantry and the United Veterans.

Please keep the food donations and cards coming. We continue to support our families and the food pantries throughout the year.

Shalom

Ritva Gottesman, Outreach Chairperson

Message from Outreach

The Fundraising Committee would like to thank our Temple families and our Religious School Families for supporting our efforts to support our Temple this past year.

As a New Year begins, we look ahead to new fundraising activities and events. We are also looking for individuals and families with good ideas, enthusiasm and just a desire to help our Temple. Our Committee meets once a month, usually the first Thursday of the month. It is not necessary to attend every meeting and you can contact any current committee member with an idea or if you want to volunteer to help out at a particular event.

As we plan for the New Year, we will work hard to find something to appeal to everyone and to every budget. During 2009 - 2010 we coordinated many activities and events including the Shalach Minot Sale, a spring flower sale, a honey sale, a car wash, 7 Ducks concession stand days, a fall mum sale, Dining to Donate at Applebees, Blessing of the Pets, the sale of New Years Cards, a dues raffle, Carvel Scoop Night, Chanukah Night at the New York Islanders and the sale of B’nai Israel Logo clothing/backpacks! Whew!

Again, than you and we look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at our many fundraising events!

November is shaping up to be a very busy month for Sisterhood. On November 1, 2010 we will be having our Blood Drive. Please try to send someone to spread the gift of life. On November 9, 2010 we will be having our Chinese Auction and on November 30 we will have our second annual Mitzvah Project. Again we will stuff some animal skins and dress them. It was great fun for one and all and we encourage you to join us.

Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving. Rita and Phyllis

`|àéät{ cÜÉ}xvàá Sisterhood is once again sponsoring a wonderful family event on November 30th at 7:00 PM in the temple social hall. Just like the Build-a-Bear we will be stuffing animal skins and dressing them up in ador-able outfits. These beautiful stuffed animals will be delivered to children’s shelters and other institutions. Last year we had a great

time and the kids (elementary through high school) felt great about doing the mitzvah for children less fortunate.

The second Mitzvah Project on December 21, 2010 at 7:30 PM will be knitting or crocheting Lap Blankets for Veterans’ and nursing homes. Wool and Knitting needles and crochet hooks are needed. Size H, I, J, crochet hooks and 9, 10, 11 knitting needles. Also open to all. Instructions will be given. Anyone who can help teach would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Joyce.

We are asking YOU to help us with these Mitzvot!

Please mark your calendars!

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

“I will not cut for stone,” runs the text of the Hippocratic oath, “even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.”

Those words provide an epigraph partway through Abraham Verghese’s first novel, “Cutting for Stone,” and also explain the surname of its narrator, Marion Stone, along with his twin brother, Shiva, and their father, the almost entirely absent surgeon Thomas Stone. Absent in body only: in spirit, Thomas’s disappearance after their birth haunts and drives this book.

The Little Bee by Chris Cleave

"Little Bee" deserves a warning label: "Do not judge this book by its cover. Contents under pressure." Despite the cutesy title (the book was more sensibly published in Britain as "The Other Hand") and the coy book-flap description ("It is a truly special storyand we don't want to spoil it"), "Little Bee" will blow you away.

Amazon says, "It is a truly special story and we don't want to tell you too much..."

B'nai Israel Book Club, sponsored by Sisterhood, is up and running for this new season! New members are welcome to join us. You do not have to be a Sisterhood member to become part of our group. Here is a sample of what we are reading in the next few months. We meet in the Religious School building and enjoy a vibrant discussion of the books we choose to review. You are welcome to join us for any, or all, of the books and dates listed below:

Donations  We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further information.
