It’s that time of year again! The HomeShow is coming to the Bangor Auditoriumfor its 41st extravaganza from April 15-17.Perhaps now more than ever, the tougheconomy will bring in the showgoers — it’salready bringing in the exhibitors, with allavailable booth space at the show now soldout.

“I think that’s the enduring quality ofthat show,” said Bass Park Director MikeDyer. “In good times, people are looking tospend a lot of money and maybe even hire acontractor. In tough times, you still have tokeep the roof from leaking and replace thegutters when you have a winter like this andyou’ve lost half of them to ice.”

Everybody’s feeling the economic pinch, but Dyer said that doesn’t stop people fromrealizing the benefits of the Home Show.Even in the worst of economic times, peoplestill have to do things to their houses, Dyersaid. “Either just to maintain them or to try

and do something in-house,” he said, “evenif they don’t hire a contractor to try and getideas for what they can do to enhance thevalue of their homes.”

Dyer said the show’s success is thanks tothe tireless efforts of show promoter DeanAppleman, owner of All Seasons Promo-tions. “He is a crusader, he is a go-getter,”Dyer said.

Lest you think Appleman takes just a fewweeks to get ready for this show, that isn’thow it works. He spends all year planningthe show. And the timing is by design.

“Dean has tried shows at both times ofthe year, and in this market in the spring-time, this show works the best,” Dyer said.“None of the success of that show happensby accident. Some of it’s gut instinct, andsome of it is just learning the hard way.”

Dyer is no stranger to events that drawpeople from all over Maine to the BangorAuditorium, but he says the Home Showremains a stunning draw. “It’s one of thosethings — normally it’s at a good time of theyear where people are actually feeling goodabout getting out and not worried about the

weather,” he said.Despite the recent interruption by a pile

of heavy, wet snow, the crocuses are up, tulipgreens are growing, and the buds areappearing on the trees. After the winterdamage, spring is working to replace mudseason, and Dyer said people are ready tomove beyond being tired of winter.

“The average homeowner has probablyseen a little bit more damage to the exteriorto the house,or seen something that all thisstress from all the snow and the ice every-thing has done, that just says, ‘Boy, I’ve gotto do something … maybe I can do itmyself,’” he said.

Dyer said that these days, with gas pricesskyrocketing, it makes more sense to use theHome Show as a one-stop window-shop-ping venue. Instead of driving all over the

place trying to learn about the home proj-ects you have in mind, you can get a prettygood education under one roof.

“It actually becomes a huge bargain to payseven bucks … and see all of these people inone spot and just have it be a trip to Bangor,”he said. “It becomes a very practical thing todo if you’re just looking at your investmentand your time and gas.”

Dean Appleman and All Seasons Promo-tions has established a strong history put-ting this show on in Bangor for over fourdecades, so Dyer said, if nothing else, show-goers can “kick some tires” and see what’sout there.

“You never know — you could beinspired to realize there is actually some-thing you should do for your home and thatyou can actually afford to do,” he said.

It’s another year of the wildlysuccessful, thoroughly education-al, and delightfully entertainingBangor Home Show. The thou-sands of people who attend do itbecause of the wide variety ofexhibitors, who jam-pack theauditorium, the Civic Center, andthe corridors and open spaces inbetween. Here are just a few of theparticipants you’ll see this year.

AndManager Richard Goodwin has aclear plan to deal with the sag-ging national and global econo-my: Take care of the local econo-my first.

If Goodwin could get 100 per-cent of his furniture from Maine,he’d do it, but as a full-line store hedoes have to leave the state. Butstill, about 40 percent of his prod-ucts are made in Maine, includingthe entire second floor of almost allunfinished furniture of all types.

“We’re just a little, rinky-dinkfurniture store, but when you buya piece of that, do you know youfeed five businesses?” Goodwinsaid, referring to the logger, themill, the retailer, the artisan, andthe store.

Owner and developer ForrestGrant invested $1 million into theStillwater Avenue building andprovided eight jobs when the storeopened. It stocks beds, chairs, shelves, hutches, bureaus, and justabout anything you can think of atimpressive prices.

At the show, Goodwin will bringas much as he can jam into hisspace, and more if extra space isavailable. He’ll highlight his quali-ty Maine-made unfinished furni-ture, along with finished versions. The store takes custom orders, anda full-time employee does customfinishing.

“This is made-in-Maine prod-uct, key to the Maine family,”Goodwin said. “We’re putting themoney right directly back into thecommunity more than any otherfurniture business is in the state.”

Goodwin said he enjoys theHome Show, and has a great rela-tionship with promoter DeanAppleman. “He likes us because wehave lots of stuff and we’re happyto bring it,” he said.
