Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

Welcome to fun, Denton styleBy Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

The last weekend in Aprilis almost here, and any-one familiar with

Denton knows what thatmeans. For three days, carscrowd the downtown area, thepopulation of the city almostdoubles, and the sound ofmusic can be heard throughoutthe blocks surroundingQuakertown Park.

The Denton Arts & JazzFestival brings more than200,000 visitors as well as top-rated musicians, artists andcraftsmen and women to town.

Begun in the early 1980s asSpring Fling — a small fair toraise money for the arts inDenton — the Denton Arts &Jazz Festival is the result ofmerger between Spring Flingand the Denton Jazz Fest, anevent that pulled from themany musicians living andstudying in Denton.

This year, the festival is dedi-cated to the man who estab-lished the University of NorthTexas and Denton as a birth-place for fine jazz musicians inthe United States.

Leon Breeden, who died inAugust, led the jazz studiesprogram at UNT from 1959 to1981. He took the program tointernational prominence, andtrained some of the leadingjazz musicians performingtoday.

While the festive weekendoffers something for everyone, its focus is Denton’s long andillustrious tradition as an incu-bator for musicians and artists. Each year, the festival drawssome of the country’s leadingmusicians, as well as offering ashowcase for local performers. In addition, artists and artisansfrom across the nation bringthe fruits of their talent to thepark.

True jazz buffs will gather infront of the Wells Fargo/Budweiser Jazz Stage in

Denton Arts & Jazz Festival

By Kit KingFor the Denton Record-Chronicle

In the two and a half days ofthe Denton Arts & JazzFestival, audiences can listen toprofessional performancesinvolving more than 350 musi-cians.

The man who pulls this alltogether is Ray Hair, presidentof the American Federation ofMusicians, a resident of NorthTexas and a University of NorthTexas music graduate.

He began outdoor shows inDenton in 1985 with the firstDenton Jazz Fest, a Sunday-only show with a flatbed trailerfor a stage.

“Jazz Fest grew out of a pro-gram called ‘Concerts on theSquare,’ featuring primarilyjazz groups from the school[UNT]. The man who ran theparks and recreation programsuggested we do the Sundayshow, and I got together withthe city and the convention and

visitors bureau to put it on,”Hair explained.

Within six years, the Sundayafternoon event was drawing10,000 people.

In the early ’90s, everythingchanged. Hair and Carol Shortgot together and merged theJazz Fest with Spring Fling, afundraising event for theDenton arts community, nam-ing it the Denton Arts & JazzFestival. They began bringingin big-name headliners andfine artists in various media, drawing even more to the festi-val.

“We brought in headlinersthat complemented with the

school and community pro-duced,” Hair said. “We wantedto bring back the best ofDenton. We pull from Denton, and bring in groups that havegone from Denton to work pro-fessionally.”

“Our organization pioneeredthe multi-stage outdoor venue, and, over the years, we’veestablished relationships withevery musician that appears.”

Hair and his productionteam begin work in January forthe April event.

“We manage the logisticswith the right kind of prompt-ness, and now we’ve been doingit so long, everyone knows whatto do,” he said.

While the local and regionalgroups are always cooperative,Hair admits some of the big-name headliners have require-ments that can cause extrawork — all in a year’s work.

“We’ve never really had ahassle with a musician,” he said.

In fact, when the PA systemwent out before JoshuaRedmon’s concert one year, theperformer went right aheadwith his show.

“Everybody in the audiencequieted down, and it turnedinto a great evening,” Hair said.

“We always want to bring ingreat programs, so the audi-ence will go away and say, ‘Thatwas a once-in-a-lifetime show.’”

Board members plan, raisemoney and put together themajor elements of the festival. They line up sponsors, many ofwhom have provided fundingsince the inception of the festi-val.

They work with the city ofDenton staff, another vital ele-ment in putting together a suc-cessful event. And, they recruitvolunteers for Top Hands.

Once festival weekend rollsaround, this group of volun-teers goes to work.

Wearing special badges, TopHands serve food and drinks, sell T-shirts, man informationbooths and handle the numer-ous challenges that crop up.

These dedicated membersare the foundation of a success-ful festival.

“If it weren’t for the volun-teers and sponsors, we couldn’thave the festival and we cer-tainly couldn’t have it free,”said Carrell Ann Simmons, chairwoman of the Top Handscommittee. “They are critical.”

Several new booths havebeen added this year, andSimmons said she has 632slots to fill.

At present, she has morethan 200 Top Hands, but sheneeds more.

“We’re about two-thirds full,”

The Jazz Stage at theDenton Arts & JazzFestival has seen

some top-of-the-line talent— world-renowned musi-cians whose names arefamiliar to everyone.

And this year is noexception.

Beginning Friday withthe Tribute to Leon Breeden, starring three of his formerstudents — Tom “Bones”Malone, Lou Marini andMarvin Stamm — the festi-val includes three other out-standing headliners.

Quebe Sisters Band“It’s our first time to play

there, but we’ve heard foryears about the qualityentertainment, so we’resuper excited about theopportunity,” said JoeyMcKenzie about the QuebeSisters’ upcoming appear-ance at the festival Fridayafternoon.

McKenzie, who, with hiswife, owns McKenzies’Music & InstructionalStudio in Mansfield, begangiving the Quebe sisters fid-dle lessons more than 10years ago

The sisters — Grace,Sophia and Hulda — hadbeen to a fiddle contest inDenton and wanted tolearn. They were 7, 10 and12 years old at the time. They began competing, winning national champi-onships at an early age.

The band, whichincludes McKenzie andDrew Phelps, both gui-tarists, was formed andbegan touring five years ago

While the band hasscheduled its third CD forlater this year, the memberslove to tour, according toMcKenzie.

“We love traveling andseeing new places. We’vemet some great friends onthe road, and hearing somany different kinds ofmusic really helps theband,” he said.

The group will tourthrough the summer, play-ing for both large and smallaudiences.

Sahm said. So, they areplaying familiar songs, mostfrom the original band’srepertoire.

In its original incarna-tion, the band wasdescribed as a mix of “coun-try, rhythm and blues, bal-lad singing, Texas rock androll, and conjunto” — a typeof music that mixes Mexi-can Norteño with Germanand Czechoslovakian polkasand waltzes.”

Shawn Sahm started theidea of reviving the soundtwo years ago on the 10thanniversary of his father’sdeath.

It started with an albumthat included an old demoof Doug Sahm, as well asthe last recordings fromFender, who died in 2006.

The group has tourednationwide, with perform-ances at Lincoln Center,

numerous music festivalsand smaller venues.

“We can play a big place, and if the response isn’tthere, it’s not as fun as play-ing a small place,” Sahmsaid. “It all depends on thecrowd.”

Brave ComboAs always, Brave Combo

will close the festivalSunday night. It’s a concertthat both band and audi-ence look forward to withenthusiasm.

“[It’s] a great festivalthat happens in a beautifulspot in an incredible townfilled with great musicians,”said founding member CarlFinch.

“What we love about it,this is one of the timeswhen we connect with themusically inclined highschool kids. It’s a bigSunday blast, and what wewant them to do is havespace and time to enjoy it.”

A band that can’t be clas-sified, Brave Combo playseverything from polka topop, from classical to cha-cha.

“We hear things we likeand work it into our music,”Finch said.

Always looking for newventures, this year the bandhas a new CD, Kikiriki, thatwon a Pace Award from thePolka American Corp. anddid an album with accor-dionist Guy Klucevsek.

They also scored a TVpilot, Taxi Dog.

“It’s a kids’ show and itlooks great,” Finch said. “Itlooks as if it might go.”

He feels the band’sDenton home has a lot todo with its success.

“Living in a town likeDenton where we’re free tobe ourselves, it’s great. We’re grateful for the envi-ronment we live in. And wefeel like we’ve been ambas-sadors for Denton.”
