Indianapolis is largely defined by the historic Indianapolis 500 and the grand community festival thatsurrounds it. With nearly 50 annual events and programs, the 500 Festival fuels the month of May.The Festival delivers community spirit, volunteerism, participation, inclusion, entertainment,
social connecting, business networking and even health initiatives. social events, the 500 Festival touches more than 500,000people annually and in such meaningful ways.
Here is what people are saying about their experiences during themagical month of May:
This year will be my fifth year participating inthe Mini-Marathon. I love the crowd, I love theexcitement in the air and I love that this race iswhat caused me to change my life for the better. Iwill continue to run the Mini every year as a ‘thankyou’ for saving me from myself and the unhealthypath I was on.
— Katie Foster, Mini-Marathon participant(Katie has lost 125 pounds by eating a healthy dietand running. Thank you, Katie, for sharing yourstory and inspiring others.)
The 500 Festival Memorial Service is themost sincere tribute to our fallen servicemembers, veterans and their families.Indianapolis truly values the military and theprotection of our freedoms they provide.
— Staff Sgt. Jacob Cash,Indiana Army National Guard
I volunteer because I enjoy the excitement surrounding the monthof May. I have returned each year, and added additional areasin which to volunteer, because it has been so much fun— theactivities themselves, seeing other returning volunteers andwatching the participants having so much fun.
— Rise Cogswell, volunteer
Our family has a long history ofattending the parade. It’s generational. My parents took me as a child; I tookmy kids and now I’m attending with ourgrandchildren. It’s the most entertainingthing we do all year.
— Cynthia Harding, parade spectator

Towns getin the racingspirit BackHome Againin IndianaThe IMS Community Decoration Program, Back Home Again in Indiana, encourages cities and townsin Indiana to decorate their neighborhoods with the spirit of the Indianapolis 500®.
Whether it’s black-checkered flags or SnakePit themes, the contest encourages Hoosiers tocelebrate the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Agrand prize of $20,000 is awarded to the winningcity or town to be used toward a project toimprove the community. The second- and third-place communities are given $2,500.
In 2011, the winner of the Back HomeAgain in Indiana contest was Brownstown,Ind. Brownstown went above and beyond theneighborhood decoration requirements. The
entry celebrated the 100th anniversary ofthe Indianapolis Motor Speedway by askingmembers of the community to contribute itemsin quantities of one hundred. For instance, youthorganizations donated 100 bags of clothes toGoodwill, churches donated 100 cans of food to alocal pantry and a high school gym class walked100 miles in one month. One particular 5th gradeclassroom at Brownstown Elementary Schoolhosted its own race, the Mini Indy 500, whichre-enacted every detail of the race, including the
Borg-Warner Trophy, drinking milk and singing“Back Home Again in Indiana.”
The grand prize money will be used todevelop a multi-use trail that connects theJackson Co. History Center to the JacksonCo. Fairgrounds, which is the home of theBrownstown Speedway. This will provide asafe pedestrian and bicycle path to and fromthe fairgrounds, as well as a multi-use trail forrecreational use by the community.
Thank you to long-time sponsors and friendsWhether powering up the computers behind the sophisticated scoring

In addition tosupporting the 500 Festival, IPL is dedicatedto making a difference in the Indianapoliscommunity through partnerships with Trees forTomorrow, Project Greenspace and various energyconservation and emission-reduction programs.
OneAmerica has been the titlesponsor of the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon for nine consecutiveyears; however, its generosityextends far beyond that.
