Boating enthusiasts interested in checking out the latest in boats, personal watercraft and accessories can find it all at the 2012 Southwest Virginia Boat Show Feb. 24-26 at the Roanoke Civic Center. “This is a great one-stop-shopping opportunity

since show attendees can visit nearly every boat dealer that serves the Smith Mountain Lake boating scene, plus booths for a variety of related products and services,” said Darrel Ross, who organizes the show in cooperation with the eight-member Southwest Virginia Boat Dealers Association. Ross said the show will again feature free admission on Friday, a popular change instituted for the 2011 show. “That means added cost for the dealers, but they voted to fund the offer again since so many people took advantage of it last year,” he said. “It made for lively traffic in the booths on opening day and less crowding on Saturday. We can better tend to all interested shoppers as a result.” On Saturday and Sunday, the admission price remains at $7.50 for adults, free for children 12 and under. Mike Ratcliff of Conrad Brothers Marine emphasized the boat show is the best place for boat buying because dealers offer manufacturer incentives. “They’re offering deep discounts, but the cut-off dates will be firm, sometimes as early as March 15. Our show falls fairly late in the discount season, so people must act fast to get the best pricing of the

year,” Ratcliff said.

Boat lovers with a bent for high-tech will be able to satisfy their cravings at this year’s show. Leading the move toward use of the latest technology in its show-floor strategy is Magnum Boating, Inc. Owner Tim Wray said QR codes posted on boat price sheets will give smartphone users instant access to video descriptions and deals on Magnum’s display boats. Instant messages will keep those with portable Facebook and Twitter account access abreast of Magnum’s show specials as they are announced. And a new Android app will provide Yamaha shoppers unprecedented access to details on the entire lineup of Waverunners, Wray said. Webster Marine at Halesford Bridge is also exploring the use of social media to engage both prospects and customers. “We are working on ways to use Twitter, Facebook and our website to enhance our customers’ boating experience,” said sales representative Rusty Richardson. “Check us at the show for developments.”

ACE MARINE Dave Swett of Ace Marine, located in Stuarts Draft, said he’s excited by the dealership’s first chance to show off Yamaha’s 190 Series sport boats, new for 2012. “The SX 190 and AR 190 offer large, open-bow seating areas, spacious cockpits, tons of storage and a multi-step, low-to-the-water swim platforms that get swimmers and riders right down into the action,” Swett said. “And because of its innovative space utilization, this is a 19-footer that feels more like it’s a 21[-footer].” Built to be both rider and driver friendly, the 190s are designed for families seeking fun on and in the water. Features include a foldable wakeboard tower, angled boarding ladder, cruise control, an innovative low-speed handling system and an efficient water-jet propulsion system that takes less space, delivers a solid 4.5 mpg at cruise, and has no potentially-injurious external drive components. Ace will also display a new 21-foot series that incorporates similar propulsion, comfort and convenience features.

CONRAD BROTHERS MARINE Conrad Brothers Marine, after five consecutive years ranking among the top 25 Tracker dealers worldwide, will be celebrating that manufacturer’s 35th anniversary. They’ll also display Mako’s new 17-foot center console skiff at the entry-level price point of $13,595. “It’s a stable fishing platform, but has a vented keel and spray deflector hull that provide a chop-taming ride. It’s a good fit to Smith Mountain Lake,” Ratcliff said.

Fishermen will like finding that Nitro has reduced

the price of its 21-foot Z-9

performance bass boat, equipped with a 250-horsepower Mercury outboard, by $4,000 with no sacrifice in quality or appointments, Ratcliff said. Ratcliff also said Sun Tracker pontoon boats have been redesigned for a sleeker, richer, more upscale appearance in both hull and appointments, with little change in pricing. And Conrad Brothers will also be showing the Regal 21-foot stern drive sports towboat with electronically folding wakeboard tower. “That’s a great feature for lift-kept boats since the ability to stow the tower with the touch of a button means your full-featured wake sports towboat can be easily hoisted up out of the weather between uses,” Ratcliff said. Centurion’s high-quality towboats will also be featured. Some 2012 models feature improved wake surfing capability built around internal ballast tanks and a low-emission engine that minimizes rider exposure to exhaust fumes.

HUGHES MARINE SERVICE Hughes Marine Service, celebrating 47 years of service in Southwest Virginia, will be showing its lineup of Godfrey pontoon boats (Sweetwater, Aqua Patio and Sanpan) featuring several new seating plans and equipment options. “With the third pontoon and larger engines, these have become real multi-purpose craft with appeal across generations — capable of towing tubes and skiers by day and taking the whole neighborhood out for a sunset cruise,” said co-owner Mary Yeaman. Hughes will also showcase its new Centurion towboats franchise. “These great-looking, well-made boats tow [at] the world wake surfing championships. Serious wake surfers as well as families that want to get into an easy, slow-speed sport the whole family can enjoy together need to check them out,” Yeaman said.

MAGNUM BOATING, INC. The Magnum Boating, Inc. display will debut the nationally-advertised and priced H2O series from Chaparral Boats. Magnum owner Tim Wray said these sporty 18- and 19-footers let entry-level buyers enjoy wakeboarding, skiing and fishing in style, class and quality starting at under $30,000, complete with trailer. Wray said he also looks forward to announcing the new operator of the restaurant at Indian Pointe Marina where Magnum is located. “We’ve been working with a well-known local restaurateur to develop a concept that will fulfill our vision for Indian Pointe. The result will be revealed at the show,” Wray promised.

SMITH MOUNTAIN BOATAND TACKLE Smith Mountain Boat and Tackle, located on Virginia 40 in Penhook, will have Carolina Skiffs and Sylvan Tritoons on display. Owner Scott Reynolds is especially enthused with Sylvan’s newly-designed RPT hull design, with a “V” shape built into the outer tubes to replace planning and spray strakes that were previously welded on. In 21-, 23- and 25-foot models, the Sylvans come powered by outboards from either Honda or Yamaha, both of which have significant manufacturer rebates in effect for this show, Reynolds said.

SMITH MOUNTAIN YACHT CLUB Smith Mountain Yacht Club (SMYC) will showcase its lineup of “Excursion” pontoon and tritoon boats from Forest River, a newly-formed Berkshire-Hathaway company. “We’ll have 21- and 23-footers on display,” said sales manager Jeff Punzo, “and we think buyers are going to love the fit and finish on these boats.” SMYC, which has been Smith Mountain Lake’s Sea Ray

dealer for the past 35 years, will also debut the Sea Ray

205, a new mid-

priced sport runabout ideally sized for SML, and display 21- and 23-foot Nautic Star deck boats, which are powered by dependable Yamaha outboards that require no winterization. “They’re ready to go all winter long, anytime the weather is inviting,” Punzo said.

WEBSTER MARINE CENTER Webster Marine Center, located on SML near Hales Ford Bridge, will have models from Bennington, Bryant, Hurricane, Nautique and Sea-Doo on display. Bennington has made several styling changes, including new interior and exterior colors, for 2012. Faux teak aft flooring is now available on Q and R series models. Bryant offers a new “Walkabout” floor plan on the 198 and 210, which features a rear-facing observer seat and seating that wraps around the interior, much like a typical V-drive wakeboard boat. The 210 Walkabout also has stern lounge seats. Bryant has also introduced a 233X model with a wakeboard tower and the Walkabout interior with aft lounge seats for the family that wants a stern drive boat with water sports towing features. Ballast tanks and speed control are available as options. Nautique has also made some styling changes, including new interior and exterior colors, and has upgraded the electrical system and stereo amplifiers. At the wheel, the LINC digital helm system has been refined on the Team Edition boats to be more customizable and to give the driver better access to the boat’s speed control, ballast and music systems. In personal watercraft, handling on the SeaDoo RXT-X models can be tuned using adjustable rear sponsons and trim tabs. The RXP-X 260 is all new for 2012, with a tighter turning hull, Intelligent Throttle Control and Intelligent Brake and Reverse for improved safety and slow-speed handling. Yamaha has redesigned its 115-horsepower four-stroke outboard to be lighter, more responsive and more fuel efficient. The 3.3L V-6 200 and 225-horsepower four-strokes now have variable camshaft timing for better low-end and midrange punch as well as better fuel efficiency.

EVERYTHING YOU’D EXPECT FROM THE LEADER IN BOATING

All-new for 2012, the AR190 and SX190 bring an irresistible boating experience to the water like nothing else in the 19-foot class. More than just fun. More than just a boat. It’s a Yamaha. The AR190 and SX190 redefine everything that boaters should expect in a 19-foot boat. Leading-edge innovations and performance. Smarter use of space. And a feature-to-value ratio that competitors can only dream of matching.

VIRGIL NAFF LYNCHBURG KAWASAKI, YAMAHA AND SEA-DOO Virgil Naff’s dealership has arranged a special manufacturer’s limited four-year warranty to apply to all Sea-Doo models purchased at the show, said sales manger Doug Roh. Special financing terms that begin with no interest for six months will also apply. Both offers end when the show ends, Roh emphasized, so are limited to contracts signed on show days. Manufacturer’s rebates from $500 up to $1,000, depending on model purchased, also apply. “These are great incentives to buy right now,” Roh said. “Buyers are also going to like the lively new white and gold color scheme on the GTX and GTS models. And we know that the braking system, standard on all but the GTS models, is really popular with riders. The ability to stop 80-100 feet shorter can make a big difference on a busy lake. That, plus having all controls on the handle grips, adds to the safety and handling of these skis.” Owner Virgil Naff also pointed to Sea-Doo’s Touring and ECO mode operator settings, which moderate acceleration but offer cruising performance at substantial reductions in fuel consumption. “In the sport mode,” Naff said, “there is far more acceleration than most riders want or need. Most SML owners can use the economy modes for the bulk of their riding, and enjoy much lower operating cost. “Sea-Doo has departed from the crowd and put high-end features on many of its less expensive models,” Naff said. “And new for 2012 is a GTX suspension-equipped model that uses the economical 155-hp engine with no supercharger.” Other features such as cruise control and SKI mode are also available on many models. Ski mode allows the machine to “learn” and repeat an acceleration profile best suited to the person being towed.

Wondering if it’s time to trade up? Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer yes, it may be time to invest in a new boat or personal watercraft.

• Would a family member who rarely comes along be more eager to join in the fun with a newer, more capable boat?

• Am I avoiding busy times on the lake due to an uncomfortable or unsafe-feeling ride in my current boat?

• Do I sometimes have to leave friends or family members behind because of lack of seating space or weight capacity?

• Am I unable to pull skiers, tubers, wake boarders or surfers the way I’d like?

• Is there new technology available that would make my boating safer or more satisfying?

• Would having the latest in fish-finding and catching gear make my outings more productive and enjoyable?

• Would the safety features offered on the new PWCs (such as reduced stopping distances and “learner” operator speed restrictions) reduce my anxiety about turning over the keys to youngsters or guests?

• Would a shiny new rig with more bells and whistles, a better ride or better sun protection reenergize my interest in being out on the water?

• Is my old rig unreliable, inefficient or unfriendly to the environment? Would I prefer a clean, efficient four-stroke outboard I can operate year-round?

• Would the new generation tritoon hull configurations offer me a combination of performance and passenger capacity that redefines my boating activity?

BOAT SHOW2012 SW VIRGINIA

16

Southwest Virginia is a terrific place to enjoy the pleasures of boating. Our area offers beautiful scenery, a mild climate and abundant opportunities for on-water excitement. Wake sports enthusiasts, skiers, sailors, anglers, tubers, PWC riders, kayakers, canoeists and

retired sight-seers will all find ways to indulge their passions afloat. And owning a boat is the best way to access it all. It starts with a mild weather pattern that keeps Smith Mountain Lake (20,600 acres), Claytor Lake (4,500 acres), Leesville Lake (3,400 acres) and Philpott Lake (2,880 acres) virtually ice-free year-round. So those who want fishing to be part of their winter recreation — and who dress warmly enough for the dashes from one hot-spot to another — can fish close to home all winter long. Spring’s longer days and warm afternoons lure the recreational boats out from their winter storage berths. Resident power boaters can be confident freeze-up danger has passed by around April 1, and sailors rig up to harness spring breezes at a series of races. Serious water skiers, wake boarders and wake surfers (often kept comfortable by shorty wetsuits) begin shredding in mid-to-late April, and even the less dedicated

find the water irresistible by mid-May.

By mid-June, lake

temperatures are comfortable for swimmers and tubers of all ages, and a month later the water turns bathwater balmy, often reaching the low-to-mid 90s in August. Get-wet sports continue in full force through late September, and you’ll see the die-hard boarders and skiers out on warm afternoons well into October. Late October and early November, with minimal traffic on the lakes, is a favorite time for enjoying fall colors and the changing views of waterfront properties as leaves fall and clear the sightlines. But the long season is just one appealing aspect of Southwest Virginia boating. Couple that with views of surrounding Blue Ridge Mountain ridges; with a mix of vistas that range from gently-sloping shorelines to sheer cliffs and from manicured lawns to undisturbed forests; with sheltered coves for anchoring and island beaches ideal for picnic lunches and splashing in the shallows; with clear, clean water that leaves no salt residue on boat or body parts; with renown striper and bass fisheries that attract amateur anglers and pros alike; and you have a mix that appeals to most of the things people enjoy about boating. And if occasional forays off-shore are your thing, trailering distances to the varied coasts of Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina are very manageable. At Smith Mountain Lake, favorite boating activities include spring and fall sailing regattas, cruises to lakeside restaurants, motoring to a spectacular over-water fireworks display on July 4th weekend, visiting the docks of friends and neighbors,

Southwest Virginia offers so many reasons to get out on the water in any season

Catch a wake. Catch a fish. Catch some rays. If you’re looking for fun on the water, you’ll find it all with Hurricane boats. Hurricane offers three deck boat styles all with resilient quality materials, spacious floor plans and an extensive list of features. That means more choices for where to go and what to do, no matter what water you’re on. The leader in deckboats for over 30 years, Hurricane knows how to get the most out of boating.

and rafting up with boating pals, new and old, in sheltered coves for swimming, chilling and story-telling. Personal watercraft (PWC) are also popular among full-throttle enthusiasts as well as more sedate riders who savor the ease of climbing aboard for an early morning or evening shush through glassy-smooth coves, greeting folks who are out on the docks and decks they pass. Closer to Blacksburg, Claytor Lake offers access at three marinas, good fishing and a variety of interesting shorescapes, including cliffs in one section, nicknamed “Glass Windows,” that plunge 240 feet into the water. Leesville and Philpott shorelines are generally undeveloped and are excellent for observing nature from the water. All in all, the lakes of Southwest Virginia make this a boating paradise.
