Hymn: TiS 349

1. In the cross of Christ I glory,

towering o'er the wrecks of time;

all the light of sacred story

gathers round its head sublime.

2. Through the cross, Christ's love empowers us

worldliness and self deny;

by his Spirit it inspires us

him, through love, to glorify.

3. When the woes of life o'ertake us,

hopes deceive and fears annoy,

never shall the cross forsake us,

from it shines our peace and joy.

4. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,

by the cross are sanctified;

peace is there that knows no measure,

joys that through all time abide.

5. In the cross of Christ I glory,

towering o'er the wrecks of time;

all the light of sacred story

gathers round its head sublime.

John Bowring 1792-1872 alt. v. 2 Charles Louis Fouvy 1928-–

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me? I will

lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, I will pay

my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. Psalm 116.12–14

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord

your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (How Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

O God, you have made heaven and earth and all that is good: help us to

delight in simple things and to rejoice always in the richness of your

bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in

the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Jeremiah 29.1, 4-7

1 These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from

Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the

prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile

from Jerusalem to Babylon. 4 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to

Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they

produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your

sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and

daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the

city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in

its welfare you will find your welfare.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 66.1-8 1 O shout with joy to God, all the earth:

sing to the honour of his name,

and give him glory as his praise. 2 Say to God ‘How fearful are your works:

because of your great might

your enemies shall cower before you.’ 3 All the earth shall worship you:

and sing to you, and sing praises to your name. 4 Come then and see what God has done:

how terrible are his dealings with the children of Adam. 5 He turned the sea into dry land,

they crossed the river on foot:

then were we joyful because of him. 6 By his power he rules for ever,

his eyes keep watch on the nations:

and rebels shall never rise against him. 7 O bless our God, you peoples:

and cause his praises to resound, 8 Who has held our souls in life:

who has not suffered our feet to slip.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2.8-15 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that

is my gospel, 9 for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained

like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10

Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may

also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11

The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12

if

we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; 13

if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. 14

Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid

wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are

listening. 15

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker

who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet

our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 17

beginning at the 11th

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

11

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between

Samaria and Galilee. 12

As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him.

Keeping their distance, 13

they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy

on us!’ 14

When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to

the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean. 15

Then one of them,

when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud

voice. 16

He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a

Samaritan. 17

Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other

nine, where are they? 18

Was none of them found to return and give praise

to God except this foreigner?’ 19

Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your

way; your faith has made you well.’

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 456

1. Your hand, O God, has guided

your flock, from age to age;

the wondrous tale is written,

full clear, on every page;

your people owned your goodness,

and we their deeds record;

and both of this bear witness;

one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

2. Your heralds brought glad tidings

to greatest, as to least;

they bade them rise, and hasten

to share the great King's feast;

and this was all their teaching,

in every deed and word,

to all alike proclaiming

one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

3. Through many a day of darkness,

through many a scene of strife,

the faithful few fought bravely,

to guard the nation's life.

Their gospel of redemption,

sin pardoned, earth restored,

was all in this enfolded:

one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

4. Your mercy will not fail us,

nor leave your work undone;

with your right hand to help us,

the victory shall be won;

and then, by all creation,

your name shall be adored,

and this shall be our anthem:

one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our

offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom.

BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Final Hymn: TiS 279

The King of glory comes,

the nation rejoices;

Open the gates before him,

lift up your voices.

1. Who is the King of glory;

how shall we call him?

He is Emmanuel,

the promised of ages.

The King of glory comes…

2. In all of Galilee,

in city or village,

He goes among his people

curing their illness.

The King of glory comes…

3. Sing then of David’s Son,

our Savior and brother;

In all of Galilee

was never another.

The King of glory comes…

4. He gave his life for us,

the pledge of salvation,

He took upon himself

the sins of the nation.

The King of glory comes…

5. He conquered sin and death;

he truly has risen,

And he will share with us

his heavenly vision.

The King of glory comes,

the nation rejoices;

Open the gates before him,

lift up your voices.

The King of glory comes,

The na-tion re-joic—es!
