Companion Tours

Virginia City and Tahoe

The first tour begins in Reno Nevada on October 11, 2013 at 11:00 am. Soon we’ll be climbing up the Virginia Range in Washoe County Nevada admiring views of the Sierra’s to the West. Surrounded by high desert beauty, be sure to look for the Wild Mustang herds which may be close to the roadway.

The coach will drop everyone off in the heart of Virginia City Nevada, the home of the largest Silver Mine in History. Enjoy free

time to step back in time. Lunch will be on your own; there are many delicious locations here, Palace Restaurant, Hole in the Wall Donuts (great soups), the Roasting House coffee, Chinese, and Fudge Shops.

We will then continue through the Virginia Range, and travel up Hwy 50 to East Lake Tahoe. Enjoy the most beautiful scenery as the desert makes way into vast pine forests climbing the majestic Sierra Nevada’s.

We will pass the Home of the Bonanza television show. See where the Cartwright family built their empire. In Incline Village, Lake Tahoe we’ll overlook the ‘Jewel of the Sierra’s’ at 7000 feet above sea level. Take amazing pictures the entire afternoon. The Coach will return to Reno at 4:00 pm.

Carson City

The second day tour will depart on October 12, 2013 at 11:00 am. Travel will be from Reno, NV to Carson City Nevada, our state Capital. This day will have wonderful views of Washoe Valley surrounded by high desert mountain views and the nearby forests.

Arriving in Carson City only thirty minutes South of Reno, you will learn about Nevada’s history at the Nevada State Museum. Tickets to the museum will be distributed on the coach. Guests will have plenty of free time to experience the rich history of the old West. Learn why Carson is the Capital of Nevada.

The museum is home to the Federal ‘Historic Coin Press No. 1’ which travelled all over the country via the Transcontinental Railroad.

Nevada State Museum also offers changing exhibits, historic artifacts: jewelry, clothing, geologic history, America’s largest Mammoth, mining tools, original slot machines and much more!

In Carson City you will also be close to many eatery locations including casino diners, the Carson Nugget. Other restaurants such as Mustang Sallie’s Grill, Kim Lee’s Sushi, Sassafras, and Garibaldi’s are all within walking distance.

You may also be interested in seeing the Capital Building and State Legislature, nestled in a beautiful park like setting, just 2 blocks south of the Museum. The Coach will return to Reno by 4:00 pm.

Convention Speakers Dr. Jennifer Barfield Jennifer Barfield, originally from North Carolina, began her career in reproductive physiology in the lab of Dr. Charlotte Farin where she was a student volunteer and teaching assistant. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in animal science from North Carolina State University in 2000, she began a PhD in conservation biology with Dr. Stanley Leibo at the University of New Orleans, where she studied potassium channels on sperm as potential targets for a non-hormonal male contraceptive. This work was completed in partnership with the University of Muenster, Germany where she spent two years of her doctoral program working with Dr. Trevor Cooper in the university’s human infertility clinic. Upon her return to the United States to complete her degree at the University of New Orleans, she was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and spent a semester at Duke University in the Nicholas School of the Environment working with Dr. Stuart Pimm on endemic bird distributions. Following her Ph.D., Jennifer completed a postdoc at Colorado State University under the mentorship of Dr. George Seidel under an NIH training grant in mammalian reproduction. She then spent 6 months at the USDA’s National Animal Germplasm Program followed by 2 months at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Colorado State University as a faculty member in 2011. She is currently a special assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences where her research focuses on assisted reproduction in bison, cattle, horses, and various exotic species. She has also co-founded a professional master’s program in assisted reproductive technologies, which began in August 2013. Dr. Kory Bigalk Dr. Bigalk graduated from the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. Dr. Bigalk worked in a primarily dairy practice from 1999 until 2010. He began doing embryo transfer and reproductive ultrasound work in 2001. In 2010, Dr. Bigalk purchased an established embryo transfer business from Dr. Clair Sauer and started Diamond K Genetics. Diamond K Genetics is a full service embryo transfer practice located in Plainview MN and services southern Minnesota. Services provided include conventional embryo transfer, both on farm and at their donor housing facility, IVF services in conjunction with Trans Ova Genetics, and reproductive ultrasound services. Dr. Patrick Blondin Dr. Patrick Blondin obtained a MSc in Physiology-Endocrinology (1993) and a PhD in Animal Science (1997) at Laval University and then went on to complete a 2-year postdoctoral internship at North Carolina State University (1999). He then joined L’Alliance Boviteq (LAB) as an Industrial Research Fellow to assist in the development of novel ARTs. Dr Blondin became Director of Clinical Research in a human ART lab to advance the field of reproductive biology in humans and finally returned with Boviteq in 2003 as Director of R&D. LAB is The Semex Alliance’s research subsidiary where Dr Blondin manages an embryology laboratory (focuses on in vitro fertilization, embryo freezing and genomics) and a semen laboratory (focuses on semen quality, sperm fertility and cryopreservation). Dr Blondin collaborates with many scientists from academic, private and government laboratories encouraging industry support of various research projects. Dr Blondin is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Quebec Research Network on Reproduction (RQR), a member of the Board of Directors for the research network ‘EmbryoGENE’ and a member of the IETS Board of Governors since January 2011. Dr Blondin is an associate professor with Université Laval and Université de Montreal, co-directing many young scientists undergoing graduate studies. Dr. Gabriel Bó Dr. Gabriel Bó, is currently President and Director of Research and Post-graduate training of the Instituto de Reproducción Animal Córdoba (IRAC) and Professor of the Instituto de Ciencias Basicas y Aplicadas,

Universidad Nacional de Villa Maria in Cordoba, Argentine. Dr. Bó received his veterinary degree from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario in 1985 and his M.V.Sc. (1991) and Ph.D. (1995) degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Bó has been working on applied research and his main interests are follicular development, superovulation, recipient management, estrus synchronization, and embryo development and freezing. He is not only involved with research and teaching, as IRAC is a client-focused research and service institute (through the company Biogen Argentina SA) he practices embryo transfer and provides fixed-time artificial insemination services to producers in the Central and North part of Argentina. In 2008 Dr Bo obtained the “Taurus Award” in recognition of his scientific and academic contribution to the field of Bovine Reproduction. Dr Bo is Past-President of the International Embryo Transfer Society (IETS) (Elected President twice in 2004 and 2011). He is also the Secretary of the Argentine Embryo Technology Society and he has also been President of the Argentine Chamber of Reproductive Biotechnology and Artificial Insemination (CABIA). Dr. Bó has lectured in several short-courses on advanced reproductive technologies in several countries around the world. He has been an invited speaker and has participated in workshops at several meetings around the world, including the International Embryo Transfer Society (IETS), International Congress of Animal Reproduction (ICAR) and the World Buiatrics Congress. Dr. Clay Breiner, DVM Received a BS in Animal Science and Industry in 1998 and a DVM in 2002 from Kansas State University. Veterinarian with Cross Country Genetics Inc since 2002 and maintained AETA Certification since 2003. During my career I have had the support of a wonderful family including my wife Kendra Rock DVM and our son Kennan, as well as, the numerous colleagues, co-workers, and clients that I have met and worked with along the way. Dr. Jaye Hambly Dr. Jaye L. Hamby has an extensive and diversified background in agriculture. Dr. Hamby graduated from the University of Tennessee in Agricultural Education, where he was honored as the top graduate of the College of Agriculture. Following his selection as a Harry S. Truman Scholar by the United States Congress, he attended Oklahoma State University and earned masters and doctorate degrees in Agricultural Education with specialization in Agricultural Economics. Dr. Hamby has conducted significant agricultural policy research beginning with an implementation analysis of the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990. In his professional endeavors, Hamby has consultative expertise in both the agronomy and livestock market segments. He has led the launch efforts for numerous crop protection products and livestock pharmaceuticals. In addition, Hamby served as a primary consultant for a rebranding initiative for a major agricultural retailer and is often invited to assist agribusiness organizations with their strategic planning efforts. Dr. Hamby’s typical sessions are in the areas of negotiation, value-based selling, team development, territory management, and strategic planning. Years of Ag Experience: 23 Degree: BS: Agricultural Education, University of Tennessee; MS & PhD: Agricultural Education, Oklahoma State University Areas of Expertise: Retail Cooperatives Dr. Randall Hinshaw Randall Hinshaw received his DVM degree from the University of Georgia in 1982 and moved to Harrisonburg, VA to purse his veterinary career. The practice currently is bovine exclusive and employs seven veterinarians. For the last 20 years his practice has been limited to bovine embryo transfer and ultrasonography. He has given

numerous presentations and training seminars across the U.S. and served as the president of the American Embryo Transfer Association. In 2006 he was awarded the bovine practitioner of the year award from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. He and his wife, Linda, have three adult daughters and three grandchildren. Dr. Brad Lindsey Brad received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Texas A&M University in 1982 & 1984, then his Doctorate from the University of Nebraska in 1998. His former employers include Granada Biosciences, Trans Ova Genetics, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Tropical Beef Centre (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia), Stroud Veterinary Embryo Services, AB Technology, Inc. (now Bioniche Animal Health), Minitube of America, Genetic Resources International (now Sexing Technologies) and OvaGenix. Dr. Lindsey was an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin and at Washington State University where he was a member of the WSU/Idaho Center of Reproductive Biology. Throughout his career, Brad has been fortunate enough to be able to conduct research and contribute to the development of many different advanced reproductive technologies & products and endocrine-based synchronization & superovulation protocols being utilized in the ET industry today. These areas of expertise have included embryo micromanipulation (splitting & biopsy), embryo sexing by PCR, reproductive ultrasonography (ovarian, pregnancy, fetal sexing, DFR, OPU), FSH product development, IVF with conventional & sexed semen, ET with sexed semen, somatic cell cloning, and embryo database management software. In 2005, Dr. Lindsey started his own business, Rex Consulting (now Ovitra Biotechnology, Inc.), to provide ET services and technical support to cattle producers, biotech companies, and ET firms. As a long-standing member of both the AETA and IETS, he has served on several committees (IETS: CANDES & Technology; AETA: Newsletter & currently, Certification). He has dedicated his entire professional career of over 30 years to studying, implementing and training others to utilize advanced embryo & reproductive biotechnologies. In addition to providing ET services as a practitioner, Brad has been a leader in all other facets of the ET industry, including academic teaching & research, private research, product development, QC/QA, as well as providing consulting, contract services & training to producers, practitioners, universities, ET product vendors and other private businesses. He would now like to use this leadership experience to serve on the board for the benefit and representation of all its members. Dr. Pat Lonergan Professor Pat Lonergan received his PhD from University College Dublin in 1992 in the area of in vitro production of bovine embryos. Following his PhD, he spent one year as a post doctoral fellow at the Norwegian College of Veterinary Medicine, Oslo, and a further 4 years at L'Instiutut National pour la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), Tours, France before returning to University College Dublin where he is now Professor of Animal Reproduction and part of a dynamic group working on various aspects of cattle fertility. His main research interests are in factors affecting oocyte competence and embryo development and understanding the maternal embryonic dialogue associated with successful establishment of pregnancy. He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed papers and has presented numerous invited lectures and more than 250 abstracts at international conferences. He has served on the boards of the International Embryo Transfer Society (www.iest.org) and the European embryo Transfer Association (www.aete.eu) and was elected President of IETS in 2009. Dr. Kevin McSweeney Dr McSweeney grew up in the dairy industry in Virginia, and after graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in dairy science in 1992, Dr. McSweeney went on to manage several dairies from Virginia to

Colorado. In 1997, Dr. McSweeney began working for Dr George Seidel and his research into sexed semen at Colorado State University. Dr. McSweeney then received his veterinary degree from CSU in 2002, and immediately afterward moved on to a master’s project focused on accessory CL formation post-AI in dairy cattle. It was during this time that Dr. McSweeney also developed the ultrasound protocols that he uses in his veterinary practice today. Concurrently, in 2012 Dr. McSweeney started a training program for cattle reproductive ultrasound called International Bovine Training Solutions. Dr. Mike Mimms *Graduated from Texas A&M University in 1985 with a D.V.M. degree *Involved with embryo transfer for 28 years *Owner of Hereford Veterinary Clinic in Hereford, Texas, where I have practiced for 25 years *The ET facility at Hereford Veterinary clinic houses approximately 100 donors year round and about 300 recipients during fall breeding season. *I averaged about 1200-1300 flushes per year for the past several years and about 3500-4500 transfers per year. *Currently the donors housed at Hereford Veterinary Clinic originate from 9 states. Many of these were problem donors prior to arrival. *Owner of Mimms Cattle Company, a 200 head cow-calf operation, producing show steers & embryos. Worth 2007 *Married to wife, Tamara Have 2 daughters: Macie age 12 and Matlin age 10 Dr. José Henrique Fortes Pontes Graduated from the Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences – Universidade Estadual Paulista Masters degree in Animal Science at University of Montreal, Canada and PhD in Animal Science from State University of Londrina – UEL From 1993 until 1999, worked as a resident veterinarian on a dairy farm in Brazil, where practiced on the field of Clinical Surgery, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Nutrition and Reproduction for a 800 Holsteins head operation. From 1999 until 2001, worked as an Assistant Research in CRRA at University of Montreal, where developed works in Maturation, Fertilization, in vitro Culture of Embryos, Cloning and RT-PCR. From 2001 until now, works as the CEO of In Vitro Brazil S/A. Started/founded a commercial IVF operation for bovine and ovine IVEP, which has produced 203,000 embryos in 2012 in 28 different labs located in Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Uruguai, Argentina, Venezuela, South Africa, Russia and USA.

Dr. Allen Rushmer Dr. Rushmer attended the New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell University and received a Bachelor of Science. He then continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a V.M.D. from the School of Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. from the Graduate School. This formal education was followed by a Residency in Theriogenology at the University of Minnesota. He then returned to Pennsylvania as an Instructor in the Section of Clinical Reproduction at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Clinical responsibilities there were centered on embryo transfer as Dr. Rushmer assisted Dr. Jim Evans in the Section’s newly formed embryo transfer service. He has been involved in full time embryo transfer service since that time. His next position was as a staff veterinarian for Drs. Hasler and MacCauley at Em-Tran. And later He was a partner in Northeast Embryonics with Dr. Jack Tate. Dr. Rushmer has been the owner-operator of Next Generation Embryo Transfer Service for the past twenty years. Next Generation provides on the farm ET services, primarily to family farms, in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. The support staff at Next Generation consists of his wife, Pamela, and the office manager, Ruth Morgan. He is a long time member of the AETA, going back to the Lake of the Ozarks meeting, which must be close to thirty years. And both of the companies in which He has been a principal have been AETA Certified. He has served as the Chair of the Statistics Committee and the Education Committee. He is currently serving his second term on the AETA Board of Directors. Dr. Hong Wei Education B. Sc degree in Zoology in 1987 in China. Master degree in bovine in vitro fertilization (IVF) in 1994 in China and Great Britain. PhD degree in bovine intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in 2001 in Japan. Former career paths 7 years as assistant professor for in China, 5 years as human IVF Lab Director in Japan Current job Chief Scientific Officer, Trans Ova Genetics Dr. Richard O. Whitaker Richard O. Whitaker, DVM, MBA. Whit did his undergraduate studies at Washington and Lee University and The University of Virginia; graduated from the University of Georgia - College of Veterinary Medicine in 1979, and earned an MBA from the University of Southern Maine in 2004. Dr. Whitaker has been a Bovine Embryo Transfer practitioner for over 30 years. Whit formed New England Genetics in 1987 and became Certified by the American Embryo Transfer Association (AETA) in 1988. He has served on AETA’s Board of Directors for nine years and was its President in 2011. Dr. Whitaker has chaired the AETA Government Liaison Committee for 15 years. Dr. Whitaker also owns and operates a small animal practice, Central Maine Veterinary Hospital in Turner, Maine.
