Welcome to the 2013 Worthys Festival! There’s something for everyone to enjoy at this year’sWorthys Festival. In the two years since the last Festival,we have been busy bringing together the best that thevillage can offer, from family fun at the opening event, theChurch Fete and Fun Day, through history walks, achallenge run, our very own music festival, a world class

piano recital, football, talent show, and much much more, to the closing climaxof spectacular fireworks.

The Festival celebrates all that is great about our community. Please enjoylooking through this programme, and do support as many events as you can.We couldn’t put any of this on of course without the support of our sponsors, and without grants from several local councils and organisations. So a hugethank you, to everybody who has supported the Festival and in particular to:

Scottish and Southern Energy, who have sponsored the Festival Marquee

Bacardi Brown-Forman, for once again sponsoring the fireworks

Cllr Jackie Porter, for covering insurance and other basic but essentialsafety costs from her HCC grant allocation

Kings Worthy and Headbourne Worthy Parish Councils, and Winchester CityCouncil

The Band of the Adjutant General’s Corps and their Officers

Leaders Letting Agents, who are sponsors of the Challenge Run

And to all our Programme Advertisers. Please support them in turn.

The Festival doesn’t run itself, but is the product of months of planning andpreparation. Key village organisations, like the Worthies Youth Football Club, the History Group, Scouts, Guides, The Worthy Players and theChurch, are contributing events which themselves take a hugeamount of work. Thank you to all of them, and to all themembers of the Festival Steering Group who have workedtirelessly to bring this all together. Enjoy the Festival, getinvolved if you can, and thank you for all your support.

Jane Rutter, Chair, Worthys Festival Steering Group, and Winchester CityCouncillor for Kings Worthy

Although all reasonable efforts have been taken by theorganisers to ensure the Worthys Festival is safe,

participants and spectators are responsible and liable fortheir own actions and safety.

Worthys Local History GroupSt Mary’s ChurchExhibition of local history in the Church and Tours of theChurch being given all afternoon. Launch of ‘How Well do youknow the Worthys?’ Quiz.

Village Festival Embroidery on display all day in St Mary’s Churchand also on display in the Festival Marquee all next weekend.“Unlike the larger embroidery in StMary's Church porch which looks atbuildings and features of KingsWorthy, this current embroideryconcentrates on some interestinghistorical features and facts withinthe Worthys as a whole.Exquisitely stitched by an enthusiasticgroup of ladies (some of us arepictured, right, with some of theembroidery squares that make up thepiece) the embroidery was conceivedin the lead up to the last Festival. Itwill be ending its journey in pride ofplace at Kings Worthy School for the enjoyment of the pupils, staff and visitorsand the learning opportunities that it offers about the local community. Thereare two notable elements to mention about the embroidery and its making. Thefirst is that of course it will never be finished properly as the history of theWorthys is still being discovered and is on-going. The second is that during themaking process new friends were made, sad goodbyes took place and the valueof community became clear, engendered by a shared interest in a valued craft.”Jackie Langfeld, Designer.
