Commit tee on Pacific Northwest Dental Conference, lef t to right: Drs. Jeanine M. McDonald, John Darling, C.R. Anderegg, Dennis L. Bradshaw, Mark Kadoshima, and Robin Henderson, Chair

Dear Colleagues: It is our pleasure to personally invite you to attend the 126th Annual 2013 Pacific Northwest Dental Conference on June 13 & 14 in Bellevue, Washington. This is an exciting year for us, as we celebrate a new beginning in our new host city.

This year’s conference will be unique, as lectures and workshops will take place at the Hyatt Regency and Meydenbauer Center, with exhibits at the Meydenbauer Center. Dentists and staff will still get the same quality, cost-effective continuing dental education as they have in years past, just in a different format. If you plan to stay in Bellevue, we encourage you to stay at the Hyatt Regency Hotel to help our Association fill a room block, and you will be entered into a drawing to win one of many prizes!

Here is a sampling of what’s coming up this year!

We urge you to take advantage of the many educational programs offered, and to visit the exhibitors who have contributed to our meeting in countless ways. You will see hands-on displays and demonstrations of the most recent advances in dental technology and materials from around the country. And, as always, there will be fun activities and giveaways in the exhibit hall!

We encourage you to bring your family and staff to Bellevue this summer. When we hear the term “cyber risk” we’re tempted to think of computers being hacked into but cyber risk also comes in other forms and it can be very difficult if not impossible to completely insulate yourself from it. Cyber risk is a rapidly growing concern and it’s increasing-ly affecting dental practices. Would you know what to do if you discovered your patient’s personal information was com-promised? Do you understand what HIPAA and state require-ments mandate if your patient’s data is breached? We’ll look at the penalties and costs associated with a breach once it has occurred and how it can impact your practice.

TABLE CLINICPRESENTATIONSEustermanCaldon Dahl Ferguson

The Post-graduate residents in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry, a 12-month program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) will present table clinics inside the Exhibit Hall Thursday,June14from12:00p.m.-1:30p.m.

CDECredit:1.5Hours·ExhibitHall

Cell Sheet Engineering in the Future of Periodontal TherapyCPT Seth Caldon This table clinic focuses on the use of cell sheets in the regen-eration of the periodontal attachment apparatus to treat teeth suffering from periodontal disease. A novel approach emerging intheresearchistheuseof“CellSheets”.Periodontalligamentcells removed from a tooth are cultured on a special tempera-ture dependent culture dish. After a few days of incubation, the periodontal cells can be lifted from the dish atraumatically as a solidsheetandplaceddirectlyontheroot.Fromthecellsheetcomes regenerative cementum, functionally oriented ligaments, and alveolar bone.

Salivary Diagnostics of Post Traumatic Stress DisorderCPT Catherine Dahl Salivarybiomarkershaveshownpromiseasdiagnosticindi-cators in periodontal disease, breast and oral cancers, cardiac diseaseandSjogren’ssyndrome.Recentresearchhasrevealedchanges in salivary concentrations of cortisol, in persons suffer-ingfromPostTraumaticStressDisorder(PTSD).Newtechnolo-gies for measuring salivary biomarkers have been developed thatallowforpointofcare(POC)testing;thisdecreasestimefor results and allows for clinical management decisions to be implementedimmediately.WiththenumberofSoldiersexperi-encing deployments during the Iraqi and Afghan wars, a rapid, non-invasive test could identify “at risk soldiers”.

AmalgamRepair,aToolinYourMinimallyInvasive PracticeCPT Matthew Eusterman Replacement of defective amalgam restorations leads to re-moval of more tooth structure further compromising the integ-rity of the tooth. This age old saga can result in the progression

from larger restorations, to prosthodontic treatment, to end-odontic treatment, ultimately ending in extraction of the tooth. Suchapatternshouldmakepractitionersconcerned.Mustwereplace each restoration that has a marginal discrepancy, or lo-calized recurrent caries? Are there other treatment options that can slow or stop the pattern of compromising the structural integrity of the tooth? This table clinic will investigate recent research regarding the repair of existing defective restorations and will discuss additional aspects of the debate including pa-tient satisfaction and dental ethics.

Non-Carious Cervical Lesions: Etiology and TreatmentCPT Joseph Ferguson The long-standing controversy over the etiology of non-car-ious cervical lesions can lead to inadequate or improper treat-ment. The treatment of these lesions is important because they often cause (or are associated with) sensitivity, gingival reces-sion and esthetic problems. Appropriate treatment requires knowledgeofthecause.Somepractitionersarguethatabrasionis the cause and others claim that abfraction is the culprit. What does the research say? How do these answers influence appro-priate treatment? This presentation addresses these questions, and focuses on the practical application of the answers.

Fluoride, is it Right for your PatientCPT Jonathan Lane This table clinic will update the audience on the current knowledge of fluoride in dentistry. Understanding the latest sci-ence will increase the providers’ ability to offer evidence- based solutions to their patients.

Update on Dental LasersCPT Kony Park This table clinic will help break down what a laser is and how it is being used in dentistry today. The limitations and benefits of lasers and its applications will be discussed so that consum-ers can better select the right type of system for their line of work. Also discussed are the various types of lasers in the mar-ket and possible alternatives such as radiofrequency units.

Comparison of Endodontic Shaping and Cleansing SystemsCPT Jennifer Silvers Reciprocating file systems have once again become a popular topic with endodontists and general dentists alike. A number of reciprocating file systems are on the market, being touted at dental meetings across the country and in endodontic journals. However, for the dentist whose practice is not primarily focused on root canal therapy the systems can be costly. The goal of this presentation is to compare the efficiency of reciprocating, rotary, and hand filing systems.

EfficacyofACP-CPPintheRemineralizationofEnamelCPT Ashley Webb This table clinic will examine a question dentists face on a regularbasis,Restoreorremineralize.Fortunately, todaythereare products available that may positively shift the demineral-ization / remineralization process and strengthen the enamel in these lesions. This presentation will discuss the efficacy of ACP-CPP in the remineralization process using a literature review.

Most of our patients with significant periodontitis and caries also have systemic issues that make them more susceptible to inflammation and disease. It is no coincidence that the peri-odontal patient who just can’t seem to get their bleeding under control also has high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, HBP and pos-sibly an auto-immune disorder. Using the medical history to help you identify your at-risk patients is vital to comprehensive-ly treating their disease. Nutritional scientists have now identi-fied thousands of powerful plant phytochemicals that actively fight inflammation, inhibit tumor growth, have powerful anti-oxidant properties and enhance our own immune system to ward off illness and disease. These powerhouses are not found in the wilds of the rain forest, but in many of our everyday foods. This lecture will educate you and your staff on how to teach your patients a few dietary strategies that will aid them in battling overall inflammation and disease. By reducing things that trigger inflammation and cellular oxidation, as well as add-ing in foods that actively fight disease and promote health, you give your patient great tools to aid in their quest for good oral and overall health!

How much is good customer service worth?

You may never really know how good your liabilityinsurance company is until a claim is filed against you.

At NORDIC, we’re invested in you and the business of insuring you and your practice. When you call with a question, you’ll speak directly with the person handling that aspect of your policy, not a random operator. In fact, you’ll always speak with a live person unless you call after hours. We think that’s important. Those big companies? Not so much. NORDIC prides itself in excellent customer service before, during, and after a claim is filed against our customers.
