Long-awaited bus upgrades now underway

Winnipeg Transit riders may see something different when they go to drop their fares into the slot on their commute Friday morning.

City buses are finally be-ing equipped with the new electronic fare boxes first talked about a decade ago.

“It’s an exciting day for Winnipeg Transit,” said director Dave Wardrop at a media event on Thursday. “This is the rollout of state-of-the-art technology that is

really going to lead to being a world-class system and a leader in the industry.”

The new GFI-Odyssey fare boxes, supplied by Que-bec-based Garival Inc., are each worth about $20,000, according to Winnipeg Transit’s manager of plant equipment Tony Dreolini. He expects all of the city’s 565 buses will have the new boxes installed by the end of June.

The new boxes feature automatic coin counters, on-screen information dis-plays, paper transfer print-ers and QR readers, a separ-ate ticket slot and sensors that will be used to read transit’s new smart cards, which will replace tickets and passes when the second phase of the changes go into effect closer to the end of the year.

“In terms of passenger convenience and ease of use, it’s going to be a huge step ahead,” said Dreolini.

While the changeover takes place, tickets, passes and the old-style trans-fers will still be have to be shown on buses that haven’t been updated yet.

According to Winnipeg Transit, the total cost of switching over to the new boxes and making the ne-cessary infrastructure chan-ges is just under $17.8 mil-lion.

Dr. Thomas Turgeon of the Concordia Foundation, left, with Premier Greg Selinger. BERNICE PONTANILLA/METRO

More cash coming to road project near Concordia HospitalThe provincial government is chipping in $5 million to-ward the twinning of Molson Street near Concordia Hospi-tal.

Dr. Thomas Turgeon, president of the Concordia Foundation, said he’s been working out of the Con-cordia Hip and Knee Insti-tute for the past eight years and has noticed an increase

in traffic on Lagimodiere on Molson.

“Last year we did have a patient that was involved in a motor vehicle collision at the corner trying to get through … that intersection.”

The total cost of the twin-ning project is $10 million, with the other $5 million coming from the City of Win-nipeg.

However, the press con-ference was not attended by any city official.

“The city went ahead and did their own announce-ment,” said Premier Greg Selinger.

“We now have ensured we have the resources available and we’re now making our announcement.”

As for the Molson project,

Selinger said his government has made “a commitment to build critical infrastructure in Manitoba.”

“It will allow us to pro-vide the kind of traffic access and movement here that’s so important, particularly in this facility where you have the Hip and Knee Institute,” he added. BERNICE PONTANILLA/METRO

As the deadline for funding for the second phase of the rapid transit corridor ap-proaches, Manitoba’s premier said the city should focus its efforts on a federal fund that maintains a one-third formu-la model.

Greg Selinger said the $350-million project, which would link the first phase in the downtown area to the University of Manitoba, should be funded through the federal government’s Building Canada Plan, which is shared one-third from the municipal, provincial and federal governments.

Instead, the city is pursu-ing a public-private partner-ship, also known as P3.

“We have to see the busi-ness case about why they believe doing it as a public-private partnership will be

beneficial when we know the price is going up for taxpayers at the city and the province under the method they’re proposing,” said Selinger.

“Right now they’re asking for more money from Mani-toba and Winnipeg taxpayers when the Building Canada fund would actually keep the price lower, (Mayor Sam Katz) knows that but he’s choosing his method of doing it.”

Katz said Selinger and Minister of Local Government Ron Lemieux don’t “under-stand” that since the rapid transit application is more than $100 million, it needs to be evaluated through the P3 process.

“You cannot go to Building Canada funds … you have to go to P3 first, to make sure that there’s value for money and then if they reject it, that’s a different story,” he said.

During Wednesday’s coun-cil meeting, Katz said the fu-ture of the second phase of rapid transit is coming down to two weeks to get a plan in place for a completion date of 2018.

Since December, the city

has expected the $350-mil-lion cost of the southwest corridor to be $137.5 million from the municipal and prov-

incial governments and $75 million from the feds.

Provincial government officials, including Selinger,

have steadfastly maintained their contribution is one-third of the cost, or $116.7 million. WITH FILES FROM SHANE GIBSON/METRO

Another group of Emterra workers is in the process of applying to join the City of Winnipeg’s largest union.

In a press release to mem-bers on Thursday, CUPE Local 500 said a certification vote was held on Wednesday for Emterra drivers and swamp-ers in Winnipeg.

“We’re encouraged and excited that these workers are interested in joining the union,” said Mike Davidson, president of Local 500.

“We anticipate that this process will be finalized by the end of June and will update the membership as more informa-tion becomes available.”

Earlier in May, about 80 employees at Emterra’s recyc-ling facility voted in favour of joining CUPE Local 500.

That vote count took place at the Manitoba Labour Board in front of union and com-pany officials.

“They want a fair wage and safe working conditions … they want to be treated respectfully,” said Davidson at the time.

Davidson said workers have expressed concerns over pro-tective clothing, lighting and hours of work, as well as wages.

The husband and wife team behind the Grove Pub & Res-taurant have inked a deal to take over the prime real estate left empty with the closure of Papa George’s in

Osborne Village last year.Miles Gould and his wife

Danielle, who opened the successful restaurant and bar on Grosvenor Avenue in 2010, will take over 87 Os-borne St. this summer, but say the restaurant won’t be a second location of the Grove.

“We’re looking to do a dif-ferent concept,” Miles told media Thursday, keeping the name and details of the new venture under wraps for the time being. “The only similar-ities to the Grove will be fan-tastic food made from scratch … great craft beers, signature

cocktails, a wide selection of wines, fantastic service and a relaxed atmosphere.”

Graeme Rowswell, president of G.T. Rowswell Realty Leasing Co., who spoke on behalf of the anonymous owner of the building, told Metro a deal to bring an un-named international chain to the space fell through in January.

The new owners take over the lease July 1. After renova-tions are completed over the summer months, the pair hopes to open the new res-taurant by Oct. 1.

NDP move to cap provincial party subsidiesThe Manitoba government is moving to cap a contro-versial subsidy for political parties — one the Oppos-ition Tories say should be scrapped altogether.

The NDP government has been criticized for accepting an independent commissioner’s report that would see up to $600,000 a year divided among polit-ical parties.

The money would be based on a formula that would include the number of candidates each party fielded and the number of votes received.

An omnibus budget bill introduced today in the legislature would cut the money available by 30 per cent.

Premier Greg Selinger has said the subsidy will help ensure that politics is not controlled by the rich.

Tory Leader Brian Pal-lister has said taxpayers should not be forced to fund political parties. The Canadian Press

Farmers’ market celebrates 25 yearsThe St. Norbert Farmers’ Mar-ket isn’t letting a little rain delay the opening of its 25th season this weekend.

The market’s Marilyn Firth told Metro it’d be business as usual at the province’s largest farmers’ market starting this Saturday, despite a winter that seemed to never end.

“Some of the vegetables are a bit behind, but because a lot of our farmers are do-

ing crops under protection … we’ll still have a reasonable mix,” she explained, noting greenhouse tomatoes will

be available this weekend. “I would guess that we’ll prob-ably have about 80 tables on our first Saturday.”

A more-than-$500,000 pro-ject to improve drainage and spruce up the grounds at the market that was scheduled to start this spring has been bumped back to this summer, but Firth said all the work is still expected to be complete this year.

Parent shocked. six young kids left alone at daycare for an hour: Police

ShaNE [email protected]

Six children between one and five years old were left alone at an unlicensed home-based daycare in the Manitoba cap-ital, police said Thursday.

The woman in charge, who was the sole caregiver, left the home at some point Tuesday, police said. A mother of one of the children arrived at 2 p.m. to pick up her child and was shocked to find no adults around.

“When the parent went there, there were ... numerous knocks at the residence that met with negative results,” Det. Sgt. Natalie Aitken said.

“She was able to gain entry into the residence and at that time immediately notified po-lice.”

The children had been left alone at the house in the St. Vital area of Winnipeg for at least an hour but were un-hurt, Aitken said.

She would not say what, if any, reason the caregiver gave for leaving the kids un-attended, but Aitken added it was not due to a medical emergency or other crisis.

Police would not give the

33-year-old woman’s name because she had yet to be formally charged with child abandonment. She was re-leased pending her next court appearance. The daycare is no longer operating. The Canadian Press

Other daycare mishaps

Earlier this month, a two-year-old child at a licensed day home in Dauphin, Man., managed to squeeze through a fence in the yard and wander away, according to the Manitoba government’s online licence order registry.

• The child was found about a half-hour later at a gas station.

• Last May, two kids under the age of four managed to get out of a licensed daycare centre in Winni-peg, cross a busy avenue and walk a kilometre before being found.

Matt Epp is Learning to Lose Control.

The making of Epp’s sev-enth album — the singer-songwriter’s second with his band the Amorian Assem-bly — wasn’t without a few bumps.

To finance Learning to Lose Control, Epp turned to his fans. In 2012, he launched a crowd-funding campaign, eventually achieving his goal of $20,000 in the final min-utes of the three-month-long fundraiser.

Then, after cutting the album live-off-the-floor in Spain’s Alpujarra mountains, Epp wasn’t satisfied with the quality of the engineering so he decided to re-record most of the album in L.A. with producer Jamie Candiloro (R.E.M., Ryan Adams).

“This album was just a les-son for me as a band leader, just trying to micromanage everything and eventually realizing I’m only human, nobody is expecting as much of myself as I am,” Epp said, a former Winnipegger who recently returned to Canada

with his wife after living in Spain for a year.

“I can just do my best. We can all just do our best. That lesson was taught over and over to me in the recording process. At every stage we had to learn to give up con-trol and just trust that it’s go-ing to happen.”

Learning to Lose Control features 12 new original

tunes, including a duet with Serena Ryder (“When You Know”) and backing vocals from Imaginary Cities vocal-ist Marti Sarbit on five songs.

In Winnipeg, Epp will be joined by a five-piece Amor-ian Assembly, including singer-songwriter Chantel Emond.

“If you’re more into hear-ing music being made and less waiting for it to be recit-ed, our shows are like that,” Epp said, referring to the As-sembly’s malleability.

Matt Epp and the Amor-ian Assembly play the Pyra-mid Cabaret on Saturday. Brock Tyler and French Press (Emond) open. Tickets are $10 at the door. Showtime is 9 p.m.Jared Story/Metro

Human beings make poor lie detectors — our gut feelings lead us astray, and we tend to rely on false stereotypes about shifty-eyed liars.

“Most people perform around the level of chance ac-curacy on a lie-detection task — the same accuracy as would be expected simply by flipping a coin,” said Leanne ten Brinke, a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley, in an email interview.

Ten Brinke studies decep-tion. In her doctoral thesis at University of British Columbia Okanagan, she tested our abil-ity to detect high-stakes lies

— specifically, televised pleas for the safe return of a missing loved one, comparing genuine pleas to those of people later found to have killed the mis-sing person.

The genuine people showed believable sadness and gave relatively long pleas. The liars

had difficulty looking forlorn.“Because many of the mus-

cles in our face are not under strong voluntary control, they could not bring their eyebrows upward and together, as occurs in genuine sadness. Instead their eyebrows only came up-ward — making them appear surprised,” ten Brinke said.

Her best advice is to discard stereotypes about liars — espe-cially that they will look shifty or gaze in a certain direction.

Instead, observers should look for inconsistencies in ver-bal, facial and body language behaviours and look for “leak-ages” of genuine emotion.

Asked about finding the truth in the ongoing Rob Ford crack video scandal, ten Brinke said her research can be a great tool for investigative reporters.

“If you notice some suspi-cious behaviour, you probably want to question the person further about that topic — they could be hiding something that you might be able to reveal.”

Despite fresh allegations and loss of staff, Ford is ‘doing fine’

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has lost a total of five staff members since the scandal broke. Steve RuSSell/toRStaR NewS SeRvice

Rob Ford brushed aside ques-tions on Thursday about a new claim that he knew the where-abouts of an alleged crack co-caine video in another chaotic day that saw two more aides leave.

As the storm continued to rage, Toronto’s defiant mayor said he’s “not stepping aside.”

Repeatedly asked about the allegations, Ford simply said: “Anything else? Anything else?”

That left his brother, Coun. Doug Ford, to denounce a To-ronto Star report — which did not name its sources — that alleged the mayor told senior aides not to worry about the video purportedly showing him smoking crack because he

knew where it was.“This is the Toronto Star

trying to keep the story alive,” Coun. Ford said.

“In my opinion, we have a disgruntled employee, ex-employee I should say, that ob-viously is upset that’s thrown these false accusations out.”

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne expressed concern To-ronto residents were losing confidence, saying Ford “needs to deal with his personal issues.”

“The premier should take care of the problems she has at Queen’s Park right now,” Ford shot back. The CanaDian Press

Second arrest in killing linked to the scandalPolice said a second arrest has been made in the March killing of a Toronto man believed to be seen with Ford in a photo linked to the crack scandal.

Police said Hanad Mohamed, 23, was arrested last week in Fort Mc-Murray, Alta., in the death of Anthony Smith and was to appear in court in Toronto on Friday charged with first-degree murder.

China. Miracle boy rescued from sewer pipe released to grandparentsThe mother of a Chinese baby boy who was rescued from a sewer pipe beneath a restroom shortly after birth is unlikely to face criminal charges because authorities concluded he fell into the toilet accidentally, local offi-cials and media reports said Thursday.

The baby was released from a hospital to his mater-nal grandparents late Wed-nesday, while his mother, 22, remains under medical care. The infant was rescued from

a pipe underneath a squat toi-let in Zhejiang province.the assoCiated press

The mother raised the alarm about the baby when he got stuck Saturday in a pipe below a toilet in a rest-room. But she had cleared away signs of a birth and did not immediately come forward as the mother.

tunisian Femen activist fined; more charges pending

A court convicted the Tuni-sian member of the Ukrain-ian feminist group Femen Tuesday for carrying an “in-cendiary object” and fined her $182.

She remains in custody pending more serious char-ges.

Amina Sboui, who posted topless photos of herself on-line as part of a women’s rights protest, attempted to carry out a new protest on May 19 in the religious centre of Kairouan. She was arrested and charged with carrying a canister of pepper spray.

Prosecutors on Thurs-day, however, said they are considering bringing more serious charges against her, including desecrating a cem-etery and offending public decency, according to defence lawyer Mokhtar Jannene.

Sboui will appear in court again June 5.

Outside the court, about 200 protesters, including many religious conserva-tives, chanted slogans against Sboui, accusing her of at-tacking the city and insult-ing Islam. They also shouted insults at the defence lawyers and accused them of “sully-ing” the image of the city, a centre for religious pilgrim-age. the assoCiated press

Have fun, make friends, meet God

Made possible by a generous gift from a Winnipeg Christian businessman

Prime Minister Stephen Harp-er is steadfastly refusing to acknowledge any question about his leadership during the months last winter when an expense scandal involving three of his Conservative Sen-ate appointees was in the pub-lic eye.

Harper has spent the past three days insisting that he first learned that his chief of staff had helped pay off Sen. Mike Duffy’s $90,000 in im-proper expense claims only after the public was told by CTV in mid-May.

But he has failed to address questions about how he in-structed his staff to handle the expense revelations after they first aired late last fall.

Neither Harper nor his NDP and Liberal counterparts were in question period Thursday, so it fell to Heritage Minister

James Moore to bear the brunt of the opposition onslaught.

“Duffy keeps the $90,000 while the Receiver General gets $90,000 from an illicit deal that was so wrong it cost Mr. Wright his job,” said Liberal MP Ralph Goodale. “Will the government repudiate the dirty money and instead garnishee Duffy’s wages and seize his assets so he pays for his wrongdoing, not some deal-maker in the PMO?”

Harper faced more than 40 direct questions on the affair in the House of Commons this week but has not provided any information on who in his of-fice was asked to handle the scandal, what instructions they were given, or why his chief of staff took it upon himself to give $90,000 to a senator ac-cused of improper housing ex-pense claims. the canadian press

Biological information

Supreme Court won’t hear woman’s appeal to ID sperm donorThe Supreme Court of Can-ada will not hear an appeal from a woman who wanted to know the identity of her sperm-donor father.

Olivia Pratten sought to take her case to the high court after the British Columbia Court of Appeal threw out an earlier deci-sion that sided with her.

She argued that off-spring like herself should have access to information about their biological past, as is the case with people who are adopted.

The appeal court said she has no constitutional right to information about her biological father.

The court said providing such information would amount to state intrusion into the lives of many people.

As usual in such deci-sions, the Supreme Court gave no reasons for refusing to hear the appeal. the canadian press

Darwin’s ‘mom’ in court to get him back

A primate sanctuary is no long-er alleging that the Ikea mon-key was abused by the woman who calls herself his “mom,” who wept in court Thursday as she described her bond with her “son.”

Yasmin Nakhuda took her monkey, Darwin, everywhere, she testified. Nakhuda, a Toron-to real-estate lawyer, took him to work, the gym, shopping, to a wedding, and brought him in the shower with her.

She took him to an Ikea store in December, locked his crate and the car and told him she would be right back. But Darwin escaped and ran around the parking lot. Toronto Animal Services scooped him up and sent him to Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sun-

derland, Ont.Nakhuda felt like she had

lost her son, said the mother of two boys, ages 12 and 16. “I think when I had my two children I didn’t have time to mother them — I was more fo-cused on building my practice,” Nakhuda said. “Having Darwin ... was like the chance to experi-ence motherhood again.”the canaDian press

Ikea monkey trial. Abuse allegations dropped as Toronto lawyer describes unusual bond with ‘son’

Suing for a reunion

Nakhuda has gone to court twice in unsuccessful bids to get Darwin back: At one of those hearings the sanctuary alleged she had abused the monkey by “strangling” him and hitting him with a spoon.

• At the outset of the trial Thursday, Kevin Toyne, the lawyer for the sanctuary, said it was withdrawing those allegations in the interest of keeping the trial short.

actor dragged by car for iphoneA Toronto actor faced a case of life imitating art Tuesday when he was the victim of a violent theft. Jeff Hanson, currently in a play about violence, was walking home when a car pulled up.

The driver asked to bor-row his iPhone. After Han-son leaned into the window and handed him his phone, the man stepped on the gas. “I had a fight-or-flight reac-

tion,” recalled Hanson, who grabbed the inside of the car.

Soon the driver sped up towards a parked car. “I knew if I didn’t let go, he was going to pin me between (the parked car and his vehicle) ... So I let go and started roll-ing,” Hanson said.

Hanson, 29, is recovering in hospital with a mild con-cussion and deep bruises and cuts to his face and chest. De-

spite complications caused by blood between his skull and brain, he’s expected to make a full recovery.

His face took the brunt of the damage, but he said plas-tic surgeons have assured him his actor’s visage will be back to normal eventually.

“If not, you know, a few scars might make me look a little tougher,” he said with a laugh. torstar news service

Thompson, who has been on the job for less than a year, was responding to a question about how the world’s biggest hamburger chain is adapting amid growing concerns about obesity.

Thompson said he lost the weight by getting active again. He noted that Europeans walk a lot and it’s rare to see Europeans who are “very, very heavy.”

“And so I think that balance

is really important to people,” he said. Thompson did not pro-vide any other details about his weight or diet. A representative for McDonald’s did not immedi-ately respond to a request for more details. The AssociATed Press

1 Rob Ford? Wasn’t he the mayor of Toronto? He still is, maggot. But for how long? The rats are f leeing for the emergency exits — five personal staffers have bailed and the week’s not over. Who’s next? His barber? Meanwhile, the mayor keeps doing his bi-zarre tribute to the Black Knight from Mon-ty Python and the Holy Grail, denying there’s a video out there featuring him get-ting Ford-faced on crack. It’s just a f lesh wound!2 Moses’ got nothing on this kid:Alone and afraid, a woman in China gave birth to a baby boy on the toilet. Apparently, baby slipped down the drain and the new mom called the Chinese equivalent of 911.

Miraculously the infant was rescued from the sewer pipe. From where he’s starting, everything going forward is good news.3 We’re number three! The OECD (don’t bother looking it up) has determined that Canada is the third happi-est nation on earth. Number two is Sweden, which is always in our face, and number one is Australia. Throw another shrimp on the barbie! Criteria include work-life bal-ance, income, housing, and something called the Mick Jagger Factor, or “satisfac-tion” for short. Canada gets the happiness bronze medal instead of the gold; after all, Rob Ford is still the mayor of Toronto. Just wait until next year, maggot.4 The rich get richer:0

Sure it’s a cliché, but boy it’s true. According to the World Bank, the world’s richest eight per cent snag 50 per cent of the world’s income. Here’s one reason the Democratic Re-

public of the Congo did not place in the top 15 of the world’s happiest nations: its annual income is $231. Com-pare that to Monaco, where it’s $171,465. If I were trying to make ends meet in the Congo, this news would not make me happy.5 Attack of the Killer Beaver:Here in the world’s third happiest country, the beaver is a symbol of cheerful industry and diligence, not to mention the nation’s founding fur. In Belarus, the beaver is just an-other nasty rodent. Some guy tried to have his picture taken with one, which bit him, severing an artery in his leg. The poor guy bled out. Now Belarus is trying to figure out what to do about an increasing population of increas-ingly aggressive beavers. There are 80,000 beavers in Belarus. Who knew?6 Speaking of Biebers:Another iconic Canadian rodent was in the news this week, this time for racing around the ’hood in his hot car, scaring the neighbours and fuelling the paparazzi. Call in the Bieber control officers. This kid is out of control.

Will Jaden Smith follow in his famous father’s footsteps? HANDOUT

Richard: Mark, The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air proved that Will Smith has a flair for broad comedy, so it’s surpris-ing that over the years he’s played so few funny roles. He’s always charming and his films usually have the odd laugh, but rarely has he played it strictly for laughs. In 1993 the safe move for Smith would have been to make a

comedy, instead he chose to play a con-man in the serious, talky Six Degrees of Separa-tion. It’s a heavyweight role, and he’s really good in it. What’s your favourite Will Smith role?

Mark: Will Smith must be the most likeable Hollywood star this side of Tom Hanks. I wish I could say I like all his movies, but I can’t. I really like his more serious roles. My favourite? The Pursuit of Happyness. His character, based on a true story, is a man caught in desperate financial circumstances, who raises a young boy while homeless. The movie is ultimately up-lifting as he becomes a suc-cessful stockbroker, but it’s a harrowing journey, and

Smith plays it to perfection.

RC: In 2008 he played two creatures that don’t exist in real life, an alien with an anger management problem and an IRS tax collector with a conscience. Hancock has a dash of Men in Black’s wonky humour, a glimpse of his ac-tion hero of Independence Day, and a taste of Enemy of the State’s troubled para-noiac. Best of all there is ab-solutely nothing in there that echoes Wild Wild West. In Seven Pounds he’s a taxman crushed by the weight of his emotions, a walking zombie who has given up on life. And he’s terrific in both movies.

MB: Hancock didn’t quite work for me, but Enemy of

the State sure did. But I’m such a troubled paranoiac myself I might have liked anybody in the role. Smith is great in Seven Pounds, a weird picture by any stan-dards. But if it’s Will Smith as hero you’re looking for, he’s commanding in all 157 min-utes of Ali. And he’s suave and debonair in Hitch.

RC: We can’t forget Men in Black. The sequels have been (profitable) disappointments, but Smith’s Agent J is always fun.

MB: Now that I think of it, if Will Smith is in a movie I don’t like, it’s the movie I don’t like, not Smith. And that includes — shudder — The Legend of Bagger Vance.

Why we love Will After Earth. As Smith and son’s new fi lm opens this weekend, the Reel Guys refl ect on the actor’s journey from Fresh Prince to king of Hollywood

Synopsis

In Will Smith’s new sci-fi movie After Earth he stars as Cypher Raige, a general in the intergalactic peacekeeping organization Ranger Corps. After he is injured in a crash landing on Earth, a planet un-inhabited for 1,000 years, his son (Jaden Smith) must navigate the unfamiliar landscape and battle new life forms to signal for help. This week the Reel Guys have a look at the highlights of Will Smith’s career and how he left his throne as the prince of Bel-Air to become one of the world’s biggest movie stars.

On any given day Tchae Measroch could find himself crawling around on all fours, splashing about in a bathtub or tapping on a bear skull, all in the name of his art.

Such is the life of a foley artist — someone who repro-duces everyday sounds for film, video games and TV, with the profession named after Jack Donovan Foley, who pioneered the craft in late 1920s Hollywood.

The 37-year-old Montrealer toils in a small, dimly lit studio that looks more like a disorgan-ized storage space containing many props, some of which closely resemble curbside junk.

This is where he cranks out sound effects for video games.

There aren’t many people like him. While Canada closes in on the status of being the world’s second-biggest video-game producer, with more than 16,000 employees, there are only a handful of full-time foley artists.

Relying on his imagination, the Ubisoft employee impro-vises sounds based on what he sees on-screen while working on games like Assassin’s Creed

4. He might remove the skin from a banana to mimic a zom-bie peeling the skin off its face. He’s used an old door knob and latch in order to replicate the sound of a centuries-old mus-ket gun cocking.

In this line of work, as it turns out, there might be unusual uses for a medical tool whose regular intended purpose is probing body cav-ities.

“It happened once that I couldn’t find a pair of police handcuffs in my stuff,” he re-calls. “So, from my ‘Hospital Items Box’ I grabbed a specu-lum to sound the cuffs.”

Sound effects are almost always last in the creative pro-cess.

That gives Measroch and others like him precious little time to probe their imagination and grab the closest available object to produce the appropri-ate sound.

Axes, bottles, boots, chains, old tires, swords — they’re never far from reach.

His tool kit involves any-thing he can use to replicate a sound. He might find such

objects at home or in the most unlikely of places, such as gar-bage cans.

And there’s plenty of trial and error.

While trying to simulate the sound of someone being clubbed over the head, for in-stance, Measroch quickly real-ized his bear skull wouldn’t produce the desired effect.

In the end, a coconut did the trick.

Another time he discovered that his water-filled tub could provide the ambient sound for a character drowning or falling overboard.

Life as a foley artist has had its challenges.

“It’s like being the stuntman of sound,” he says.

Measroch recalls injur-ing himself while working on a movie. He’d put his hands through glass while trying to emulate the sound of a woman, held captive in a cabin, banging on the window.

“Sometimes it’s a tough job,” he says, “and you’ve got to be ready to get your hands dirty.”The Canadian Press

What it takes to be a foley

Starting out at age 20, Measroch worked alongside a veteran foley artist on B movies, as-sisting him for three years before venturing out as a free-lancer and picking up film work. Measroch eventually left the

movie business and ventured into gaming, lured by the offer of greater creative challenges and recognition. More recently Measroch has been holed up in a studio creating sounds at Ubisoft’s Montreal branch.

Takei talks passing the Sulu torch to John Cho

Portraying USS Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu in the latest Star Trek movie comes with big shoes to fill, but the

man who played the part in the TV series and six films has given his blessing to the actor currently playing the role.

Even though George Takei — whose portrayal of Sulu made him a science fiction legend — said he had not yet had time to catch recently released Star Trek Into Dark-ness due to his busy schedule, he feels John Cho is the “ideal

choice” to carry on Sulu’s leg-acy due to the actor’s “charm, intelligence, dash and sharp-ness.”

“When (director) J.J. Abrams first announced he had cast Hikaru Sulu, I got a call from John (Cho) asking to have lunch with me,” Takei said Friday in Singapore, where he attended the inaugural Social Star Awards. “He was very curi-ous about the intensity of Star Trek fans and doing comic conventions, but he was more concerned about how the fans

would accept him because they have identified the character of Sulu with me for so long and he was worried about how he would be received.”

“So I told him that it wouldn’t be too long before I’ll be known as the guy who played John Cho’s part, and he was comforted by that,” Takei said with a laugh. The assoCiaTed Press

The dominant power couple in the world shifts at the whim of a fickle populace. Right now, for some, the greatest — or just most won-derful — duo is Nick Offer-man and Megan Mullally. Married since 2003, the two have seen a shift in their ca-reers: Once Mullally was the one with the hit show (Will and Grace). Now it’s him, as burly libertarian carnivore Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation — although Mul-lally has guest appearances as his ex-wife, Tammy. In fact, they tend to work together on the same projects; that way, they don’t have to spend any time apart. In The Kings of Summer, Offerman plays the widowed father of a teenager who runs away from home to live in the woods with his bros. Mullally plays the mother of one of his friends, which affords them only a few scenes together.

You’ve both been doing a lot of smaller films, often together. What’s the appeal of these projects?

Mullally: I think we both love doing indie movies. It’s kind of the equivalent of the 99-seat play. You have the feeling that you have more creative leeway and you can make it be the way you want it to be. When everyone is on a level playing field and nobody is getting paid, I think every-one pitches in equally and has the same kind of desire to create something good.

Offerman: We choose material, first and foremost, based on scripts that we think are very good. Scripts that don’t go through the corporate regime are going to end up better because they’ll retain somebody with a beautiful artistic vision and/or a great sense of humour. That will come through in an independent script much more so than a studio project. Those can’t help but be homogenized by the standards and practices, the Coca-Cola people.

How did you get involved in Kings of Summer?

Offerman: They were look-ing for sort of a gruff guy who could also tell a joke and Russell Crowe wasn’t available. Chris Colletta’s script was poignant, beauti-

ful and heartfelt, but also had a terrific sense of hu-mour. It often happens with Megan and I: One of us gets a job on something and the producers will say, “Can we get your spouse interested in this?” If one of us loves the script, the other is happy to jump on board, too. It also affords us the opportunity in-stead of spending two weeks apart while out in Cleve- land, we’re there together and having fun working on it together. There are a lot of perks to it.

They’re one very funny duo

Perfect package. Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman love working together — it means less time apart

Offerman on Kings

The going technique is to go with a really great script and get a really great cast. You have to shoot your scenes as written because you need all the story points. Chris Colletta’s script was wonder-ful and there was no need to embellish it. You happen to have some of the greatest improvisers in the nation of America. You take the script and shoot the scenes and then you say “Let’s f— around,” and you end up with a handful of gold nuggets that you’d be crazy not to use.

At age 20 Ellen Page became a star playing Juno in the film of the same name. She was nom-inated for an Academy Award and would go on to make mov-ies like Whip It and Inception, but first she took some time off.

“I studied permaculture, design and eco village de-velopment at a place called Lost Valley in Oregon with a lot of people who had the same philosophy — strictly freegan,” she says.

Freeganism, or the practice of salvaging discarded food, was just one of the things that fascinated Page during her month-long stay at the settle-ment.

The experience taught her to live more simply and to real-ly think about her relationship with the planet. Her time there also prepared her for The East, a new eco-thriller co-starring Alexander Skarsgård and Britt Marling.

“On top of it being an in-credibly beautifully written

piece of work, there were so many ideas that I was very excited about and thinking about,” she says.

In the film she plays Izzy, a member of a shadowy group of eco-activists called The East — think a more hands-on version of real-life group Anonymous — who live by an anarchist eco code.

“We were able to talk about the experience I had

and relate what that does to you as a person when you’ve been raised with this narra-tive given to us by the system that exists.

“Then you go experience something that completely flips everything on its head,” she says.

“That is a wild ride to go on. Then to walk back out into the world and society, you see things differently.”

Select images from the book, which also includes unpublished images from

Rob Zombie more alive than ever with new horror movie, album release, novel

It’s becoming harder and hard-er to define Rob Zombie.

The theatrical rocker who began his career with the ’80s shock-rock band White Zom-bie has reinvented himself as a contemporary horror film mas-ter with new classics like House of 1000 Corpses and the recent-ly released, The Lords of Salem. And when the latter became the victim of budgetary con-straints, Zombie turned to the written word for a more elabor-ate account of his witches’ tale in a novel version of The Lords of Salem released in March.

Zombie then turned his attention back to music with his fifth studio album, Venom-ous Rat Regeneration Vendor. Released last month, he plans to support the record with a summer tour of the states, and an appearance at the Rock in Rio Festival in Brazil.

Zombie will switch gears again as he tackles mainstream fare with The Broad Street Bul-lies, a movie that covers the aggressive nature of the Phila-delphia Flyers and their as-sault on the NHL culminating with back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in the 1970’s. Zombie will write, produce, and direct the film.

How hard was it to transition from producing a movie to

recording an album? The record was done at that point but what I did was I finished Lords of Salem, I finished editing this movie in a barn, stripped the editing bay out, and moved the record-ing studio in. Went right into recording the record and just stayed away from Califor-nia where we normally would record. We were out in the sticks. Stayed there for a couple months and this is the record we made and much like Lords of Salem in a sense, even though the projects aren’t connected, I feel they both have the same free spirit of, like, not worry-ing about you know, ‘Oh, is this what anybody expects? Is this what anybody wants?’ I always feel when you think that way that’s usually when you do the best stuff because ...you’re not concerned.

Your movies and music have a lot of fans here, but it seems you’re appre-ciated more

overseas. Any idea why?I read this quote from Woody Allen and he was referring to the way Euro-

peans have embraced cinema compared to Americans where in America you’re only as good as your last thing is the way that they’ll look at you, whereas in Europe you’re

only as good as your best thing. So, if the best thing you did was 20 years ago they’ll still treat you like that’s where you’re at.

It seems like that’s just a different

thought process. Americans are more like, ‘What’s new? What’s the next thing?’

You grew up a (Boston) Bruins fan, and are now doing a movie on the Flyers.Someone just came to me who had the rights to the story and didn’t know I was a hockey fan. He had seen The Devil’s Rejects and for once, someone could look past the subject and just at the film. He said: “This movie feels like it was made in that time period. This movie has the spirit of what I can see a ’70s hockey movie (having).” And that’s how it happened.

So you want to be

known as more than a horror director? This reporter called me up one time and said: “These new horror directors, we’re going to call them the ‘splat pack,’ we want to talk to you about that.” I said I don’t want to have anything to do with it. I didn’t get into directing to be part of some club with a weird name you made up.

There’s apparently much more to you than meets the eye. Music, horror movies, now a sports history flick. Do you have any plans to do a Broadway musical? At one point I started making a few moves to get it going. I really thought my first film, House of 1000 Corpses, could work as a Broadway musical because it has those elements of ridiculousness that could translate to the stage of some-where between Hairspray and Rocky Horror Picture Show. I look at Broadway the way I do Las Vegas and I used to go to Las Vegas and it always said Sammy Davis Jr. on the marquee and now it says Mot-ley Crue. Just like you come to Broadway and you used to always see Annie Get Your Gun and now it says Spider-Man. It’s like the crowds just change and I feel like soon, maybe in 10 years or 20 years, there will be a group of people that now are bring-ing their kids to Broadway like ‘Oh, House of 1000 Corpses musical. Let’s go see that.’

Settle down Twihards — Rob and Katy just friendsRobert Pattinson has been leaning a lot on pal Katy Perry in the wake of his split from Kristen Stew-art — so much so that it’s beginning to turn heads.

But sources insist to E! News that their pairing is strictly platonic.

“Nothing is going on be-

tween Rob and Katy. They are just super-good friends. There is nothing romantic about it,” a source says.

“Rob and Katy are just very similar people and she adores him, as a friend, and she just wants to be there for him as a mate.”

As for Pattinson’s rela-tionship coming to an end, the Twilight star is report-edly taking it in stride.

“Rob is doing fine since the breakup,” the source adds.

“He is not particularly cut up about it or anything. He is doing just fine.”

Cyrus and Hemsworth have been engaged since July.

Slice of pizza?Make it so

If Patrick Stewart’s Twitter account is to be believed, the X-Men star has never had a slice of pizza — until now. Stewart posted a photo of himself indulging in some of New York’s finest, along with the caption, “My first ever pizza ‘slice.’ Please note the authentic NY fold.”

It is curious, of course, that he put slice in quotes. A followup tweet by Stewart to offer clarification actually didn’t offer much clarifica-tion.

“To clarify,” he wrote, “I’ve never had a ‘slice.’”

Well, the important thing is he has now.

With his days playing soccer behind him, David Beckham is clearly on the lookout for new ways to spend his time.

One way, as it turns out, is teaming with pal Gordon Ramsay to open a sports bar and grill in the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, according to the Sun.

“The Strip has never seen such fierce competition for food, but Gordon’s places are full seven nights a week,” a

source tells the newspaper. “When you add David

Beckham’s global status into the mix it has the potential to be the most talked about restaurant in Vegas.”

But not so fast, everybody. Beckham’s rep insists that the rumours of the Vegas joint venture are completely unfounded, though they are opening a London restau-rant, Union Street Cafe, in September.

It’s difficult watching your dog woefully begging for a few of your table scraps. While it might be tempt-ing to scrape your plate into Fido’s bowl, is it really a good idea?

“Dogs have distinct nutri-tional needs, different from humans,” said Dr. Donna Cur-tin, a board member with the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association and a veterinar-ian with a specific expertise and interest in dog nutrition. “Studies show that after two or three months of eating food that is not specifically prepared or formulated for dogs, they become nutrient deficient.”

In order to ensure your dog enjoys a healthy diet, here are a few things you should be considering when feeding your canine compan-ion.

Feed your dog a balanced diet. All-meat diets, table

scraps or dog foods that are not optimally formulated to meet a dog’s nutritional needs are not the best choices. “Se-lect a high-quality, reputable,

commercial food for your dog,” Curtin said. “They’re formulated to ensure your dog receives all the valuable nutrients he can absorb.”

Hard and soft foods are both good for your pet. According to Curtin, “both are good, and if your dog learns to eat both then neither will be strange

or foreign.” Some dog owners worry that canned food isn’t good for their dog’s teeth, but Curtin says otherwise. “Canned food doesn’t cause

dental disease any more than kibble. If you’re looking for a food that helps the teeth, there are diets specifically formulated to clean them.”

Select a diet specific to your pet’s needs. Pick a formulation that works best for your dog’s needs. “Work with your veter-inarian to determine the best formulation for your dog based on his specific age, breed and health concerns,” Curtin said.

Feeding your dog should be simple, so here are some easy ways you can optimize your pet’s diet and lifestyle.

1 Don’t leave the food down all the time. Just feed your

dog at their specific feeding time. “Dogs won’t self-regu-late, which means they can end up eating too much and becoming obese,” said Dr. Donna Curtin, an Ontario Vet-erinary Medical Association board member and veterinar-ian with a specific expertise and interest in dog nutrition.

2 Keep the water bowl clean. It’s vital that your

dog always has a ready supply of clean water. Be sure to top it up after your dog has been active or spent time outside in the summer heat. “This is especially true for little dogs, because it dilutes their urine and makes them less prone to urinary crystals, which form together to make bladder

stones,” Curtin said.

3 Watch the treats. “Dog treats are formulated to

be given to your pet occasion-ally, so limit treats to once or twice daily,” Curtin said. Fill-ing up on treats may make your dog lose interest in its meals, so consider a game of fetch, a belly rub or a cuddle — your dog will love that just as much.

4 Get healthy together. Walk your dog at least

once a day to keep your pet’s heart, bones and muscles healthy and to help maintain a healthy weight. Just letting your dog out in the backyard won’t ensure it gets the ex-ercise it needs. Get out and walk, throw a ball or play a game of soccer together. “It’s great pet bonding time, too,” Curtin said. And keeping your dog active means you are exer-cising, too, which benefits you both. How much is too much?“If dog food is formu-lated by a reputable com-pany, you can follow the guidelines on the pack-aging,” said Dr. Donna Curtin, a board member with the Ontario Veterin-ary Medical Association. “Dog food companies have done feeding trials to ensure they know how much you should be giving your dog.”

However, consider such things as your dog’s age and lifestyle — if your pet is sedentary or older it may not need as much food. Michelle WilliaMs

Feeding time. Don’t let Rover go overboard

Maintaining a healthy weight

• You want to be sure your dog maintains a healthy weight — that means “you should be able to see your dog’s ‘waist’ and you should easily be able to feel her ribs,” said Dr. Donna Curtin, a board member with the Ontario

Veterinary Medical As-sociation. If not, you may reconsider what you feed your dog and how much you are feeding it. Don’t forget that if your dog has weight challenges, it’s also important to add more exercise to its routine.

Feed your dog at specific feeding times, don’t just leave food down all the time. anDresr/veer

Grown-up apple juice

Rejoice apple lovers, for I predict this will be the sum-mer of cider.

It’s been a long time coming in Canada. You’d think that as an apple-producing country, fer-mented apple juice would be a hot commodity. But unlike our drinking com-patriots in Europe, we’ve relegated it to second tier beverage status.

You don’t have to be a Coronation Street fan to know Brits enjoy a pint of the thirst-quenching stuff — it’s an on-tap standard at pubs across the U.K.

Since they are both easy-drinkers, I’ve no doubt that there’s a correlation between the exploding craft beer industry and the way consumers are embracing the wave of specialty cider hitting our shores.

Foundry Golden Cider (500 ml, $3 to $3.95) is a tasty place to start. Classic-ally English, it offers a dry, crisp apple fruit flavour with a touch of efferves-cence that makes it a great seasonal food companion (think anything grilled).

Don’t let global brands distract you from the many

ciders being pro-duced in your own backyard. This is one trend making it easy to drink lo-cal. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.

1. Combine salt, black, white and Szechuan peppercorns, onion flakes, garlic, mustard seeds, coriander seeds, ancho

pepper and dill seeds. Fill a pep-per grinder with as much of the mixture as it can hold. Store remaining Steak Spice in an

airtight container in a cool, dry place away from heat and light

2. Season filets with Steak Spice, pressing seasoning into meat. Set aside.

3. Roast peppers on the grill, turning periodically, until pep-pers are charred and blistering. Place peppers in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. The heat from the peppers will pro-duce steam that makes the skin easier to peel. After 10 minutes, peel and seed peppers and cut into 1-cm (1/2-inch) wide strips, place in a bowl and let cool.

4. At the same time as you are grilling the peppers, grill onion. Remove from grill, cut onion

rings in half and add to red pep-pers. Season with a drizzle of ol-ive oil, balsamic glaze and fresh oregano. Season with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and salt and black pepper. Mix well and set aside.

5. Crumble goat’s cheese and refrigerate until needed.

6. Fire up grill to 290 to 345 C (550 to 650 F). Add cheese to roasted red pepper mix. Season to taste with a little more salt and pepper. Gently mix.

7. Grill filets for 3 to 4 min-utes on one side. Turn steaks and top each with a handful of roasted red pepper and goat’s cheese mixture. Close lid and

3. Carefully rub off and discard the skin from peppers, then cut out and discard cores. Cut each pepper into strips; set aside.

4. After peppers are done, close grill lid and wait for grill to reach 550 F. Once grill is at temperature, adjust one side to medium and other to very low

Max Hall is quick study. He’s a CFL rookie but it

hasn’t taken the former NFL player long to understand the importance of the quarter-back in Canadian football as he tries to crack the Winni-peg Blue Bombers roster as a backup to starter Buck Pierce.

“I’m not saying he’s not im-portant in the NFL because he obviously is,” Hall said Thurs-day. “But there’s a little more emphasis on him in the CFL.”

The former BYU star played six games for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals as an un-drafted free agent in 2010 but spent last season coaching at his alma mater. But that’s also where Bombers offensive co-ordinator Gary Crowton coached from 2001-04.

Hall said his biggest adjust-ment in Canadian football is dealing with one less down.

“The key is having three downs instead of four, that’s the biggest difference,” Hall said. “Now you don’t have that one down in there to have an incomplete pass or to get stuffed on a run.

“Every single down you need to get positive yards and you need to put yourself in a situation on second down to convert. That’s the biggest difference and that’s why you must have a quarterback who’s smart, who can take care of the football and go to the right spot.”

Both Hall and Chase Clem-ent, the other new quarter-back at rookie camp this week, believe they have what it takes to play in the CFL. The Bombers are giving Hall and Clement as well as current backup Justin Goltz plenty of chances to prove themselves.

Coach Tim Burke says all are getting equal time in practice. But that will change Sunday when training camp opens and Pierce and Goltz will likely start to get more reps as the team focuses on game preparations.

Winnipeg’s first exhibition game is June 12 at home to

Toronto before the club opens the CFL season June 27 at In-vestors Group Field, its new stadium, facing the Montreal Alouettes.

Hall, 27, and Clement, 26, were signed after the Bombers released backups Alex Brink and Joey Elliott. Neither Brink nor Elliott impressed last sea-son when they took over after Pierce went down with a ser-ies of injuries.

The Bombers have decided to go with Pierce as their start-er again. But finding a solid backup is a top priority given Pierce’s injury record.THE CANADIAN PRESS

Hawks back in Presidential form

In case there were any doubts, the Chicago Blackhawks are showing they can be resilient as well as dominant.

They made it look easy in the regular season. But they had to dig deep in the play-offs.

The Blackhawks dug their way out of a 3-1 deficit in the Western Conference semifinals to take the series in seven games, beating the rival Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Brent Seabrook’s overtime goal Wednesday night.

They will now face the defending champion Los An-geles Kings in what could be another difficult series for a team eyeing its second Stan-ley Cup in four seasons. Game 1 of the conference finals is in Chicago on Saturday.

“It’s not the way you want to win a series, going down three games to one,” captain Jonathan Toews said. “But to come out on top given the situation we were in three games ago, it shows the char-acter that we have on top of the ability and the poten-tial.... We need to use the abil-ity and the confidence this gives us.”

No team made it look eas-ier in the regular season than the Blackhawks, who got off to a record start and captured the Presidents’ Trophy. But it’s been a different story in the playoffs.

They came in looking for more after back-to-back first-round exits following their championship run in 2010 and managed just two goals in Games 2 through 4 against Detroit falling into a 3-1 hole.

But Chicago came back to outscore the Red Wings 10-5 over the final three games and became the 25th team to win a series after falling be-hind 3-1. It was the first time a Chicago team had done it.the associated press

NBA playoffs

Heat put hurt on Pacers in Game 5LeBron James scored 30 points, Udonis Haslem made his last eight shots on the way to a 16-point night, and the Miami Heat used a dominant third quarter to turn things around and beat the Indiana Pacers 90-79 in Game 5 of the Eastern Con-ference finals on Thursday.

Mario Chalmers scored 12 and Dwyane Wade added 10 for the Heat, who lead the series 3-2 and will look to close it out at Indi-ana on Saturday night. The Heat ousted the Pacers in six games in a second-round matchup last season.

Paul George had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Pacers, who got 22 points from Roy Hibbert and 17 from David West. The AssociATed Press

Braves bash around Blue Jays, Dickey in Atlanta

Ramiro Pena drove in four runs with three hits, including a run-scoring single in the sixth that gave Atlanta the lead, Mike Minor pitched seven strong innings and the Braves’ make-shift lineup had 16 hits in an 11-3 win over R.A. Dickey and the Toronto Blue Jays on Thurs-day night.

Freddie Freeman and Reed Johnson homered and Evan Gattis had three hits. Jordan Schafer added a two-run single in the sixth.

Pena, Schafer and Gattis made the most of fill-in starts as Braves manager Fredi Gon-zalez rested three regulars hit-ting below .200: Outfielders B.J. Upton and Jason Heyward and second baseman Dan Uggla.

Minor (7-2) gave up six hits

and three runs — two earned — with five strikeouts and no walks in winning his fourth straight decision.

Dickey (4-7) allowed 11 hits and six runs in six innings.

It was Dickey’s fourth start allowing six or more runs this season, leaving his ERA at 5.18. The Blue Jays scored three runs in the sixth to pull even at 3, but the Braves scored three runs off Dickey in the bottom of the inning. Pena’s infield single drove in Gattis, who led off with a single. Schafer sin-gled with two outs to drive in Chris Johnson, who reached on a fielder’s choice grounder, and Pena. The AssociATed Press

Sudoku

Horoscopes

Aries March 21 - April 20 You will be in a social mood today and you are advised to get whatever obligations you have out of the way quickly so you can focus on more interest-ing things — and people. Friends are fun, and so are you.

Taurus April 21 - May 21 It may feel as if your life is in limbo but don’t worry about it. You will soon be moving in the right direction. The road may at times be tough but you’re tough enough to walk it.

Gemini May 22 - June 21 If you let people know what it is you are planning, you make it easier for them to compete with you, so keep it to yourself for the time being. Knowledge is power and power is not something you just give away.

Cancer June 22 - July 23 If you focus on negative thoughts then, inevitably, you will get negative results. As Mars moves into the most sensitive area of your chart today, you must be positive in every possible way.

Leo July 24 - Aug. 23 You are in an aggressive mood and it’s likely that someone you encounter today will bring out the worst in you. Try to remember though that not everyone is your enemy.

Virgo Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 As Mars moves into the career area of your chart today, you may find yourself looking over your shoulder more often than you should. “Enemies” cannot do anything to hurt you.

Libra Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 No matter how many little things may have gone wrong, big things are still going well and will continue to move in your favour. The world is a wonderful place — and getting better by the minute.

Scorpio Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Focus on the good things in life. According to the planets, you can’t do a thing wrong at the moment — and even if you do, Mercury will help you talk your way out of it.

Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Your luck seems to be in at the moment and you would not be human if you did not take advantage of it. Don’t listen to those who say it is immoral to succeed while others fail.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 Look at the world and see what a wonderful place it is. With a little bit of optimism, you can achieve some extraordinary things. What might you achieve with a lot?

Aquarius Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Find ways to combine words and actions. With Mars, planet of energy, moving in your favour there is nothing you cannot do if you put your mind to it. And there’s the only problem: you seem distracted.

Pisces Feb. 20 - March 20 If someone gives you a tough time today, you must take them on. If you let them get away with saying untrue things, they will take it as a sign of weakness. Stand up for yourself. SALLY BROMPTON
