Mission StatementThe SEC’s mission statement reflects the priorities of the league. “The purpose of the Southeastern Conference is to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of programs of intercollegiate athletics which are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports.”

The Standard of ExcellenceThe Southeastern Conference, with its storied 81-year history of athletic achievements and academic excellence, has built perhaps the greatest tradition of intercollegiate competition of any league in the country since its inception in 1933.

The 2013-14 academic year was another season to remember for the SEC as conference teams captured seven national titles and six national runner-up finishes. The SEC has won consecutive national championships in equestrian, men’s golf, gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving. Since 1990, the SEC has won 163 team national championships for an average of more than six per year.

Florida’s second consecutive gymnastics national title was the fourth straight for the league and 198th overall. The Georgia equestrian team brought home the national title marking the 13th consecutive year that a team currently in the SEC captured the title. Alabama won its second consecutive national championship in the sport of men’s golf. Georgia’s women’s swimming team captured its sixth national title and second in a row. The Florida softball team prevailed in an all SEC final to win its first championship and second for the league.

Texas A&M won the league’s 18th championship in women’s outdoor track & field. Vanderbilt won the baseball title, the league’s fourth in the last six years.

Overall, the SEC finished in the top two in nine of its 21 sponsored sports and in the top five in 13 of the 21 sports. Ten SEC teams participated in football postseason bowls with Auburn participating in the BCS Championship. Three men’s basketball teams were invited to the NCAA Tournament and eight women’s basketball teams were also invited to the NCAA Tournament. The SEC had 10 teams advance to postseason play in baseball with Ole Miss and Vanderbilt advancing to the College World Series. With 178 teams advancing to NCAA postseason competition, the SEC continued to solidify its place as the nation’s premier conference.

In addition to the seven team championships, 71 SEC student-athletes garnered individual national championships, while 555 individuals were awarded with First-Team All-America Honors. Student-athletes around the league continued to excel in the classroom as well with more than 3,100 earning recognition on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

On the national all-sport level, all 14 SEC schools placed in the top 55 of the NACDA Director’s Cup rankings. Florida led the league with a second-place finish. Texas A&M placed 10th while Kentucky was 11th; Georgia finished 16th, Alabama 17th, LSU 24th, Arkansas 28th, Auburn 34th, South Carolina 35th, Tennessee 40th, Vanderbilt 45th, Missouri 46th, Mississippi State 52nd and Ole Miss 54th.

Jere W. MoreheadUniversity President

Jere W. Morehead became the University of Georgia’s 22nd president on July 1, 2013, having previously served as UGA’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost since 2010.

President Morehead’s career covers a wide range of faculty and administrative roles. Prior to 2010, he served UGA in several key administrative assignments, including vice president for instruction, vice provost for academic affairs, associate provost and director of the Honors Program, and acting executive director of legal affairs. From 2003 to 2010, he served as the University’s Faculty Athletics Representative.

As UGA President, he also serves as chair of the Georgia Athletic Association Board of Directors, chair of the UGA Research Foundation, a UGA Foundation trustee and a UGA Real Estate Foundation trustee. He has been appointed to a one-year term on the Committee of Research Intensive Public Universities by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and is included in Georgia Trend’s 2014 Most Influential list.

President Morehead is the Meigs Professor of Legal Studies in the Terry College of Business, where he has held a faculty appointment since 1986. He is a co-author of several books and book chapters, including The Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business, and he has published scholarly articles on legal topics ranging from export controls to jury selection. He has served as editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal and previously held several other editorial board positions with the ABLJ.

He directed the UGA Law School’s Advocacy Program from 1986 to 1995 at a time when the moot court teams he coached won international, national, regional and state championships. In 1995, he served as a visiting professor of business law at the University of Michigan.

President Morehead has received several University-wide teaching awards, including the Josiah Meigs Award — UGA’s highest honor for teaching excellence — the Richard B. Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Teacher of the Year Award in the Terry College of Business, and the Lothar Tresp Outstanding Honors Professor Award.

Morehead is a native of Lakeland, Florida. He moved with his family to Atlanta as a teenager, and enrolled at Georgia State University after graduating from high school at the age of 16. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1977. He entered the University of Georgia School of Law in 1977, where he graduated with a juris doctor degree at the age of 23 in 1980. After graduation, he served as an assistant United States attorney with the Department of Justice from 1980 to 1986. He is the first alumnus of UGA to be named president since Dr. Fred Davison in 1967.

Greg McGarityJ. Reid Parker Director Of Athletics

Athens native and University of Georgia graduate Greg McGarity was named Director of Athletics at UGA on August 13, 2010, after serving 18 years in the athletic department at the University of Florida.

Since that time, McGarity has injected a program of imagination and innovation into the Georgia Athletic Association with emphasis on exploring new ideas and initiatives designed to move the organization forward in all areas of competition, academics, and service.

Among the many initiatives are implementation of a nutrition program for all sports, greater emphasis on customer service as well as community service, scoreboard upgrades enhancing the in-game experience for guests and patrons in all sports, and development of leadership programs fostering staff development. In addition, he has encouraged the experimentation of new ideas such as moving volleyball competition to Stegeman Coliseum and helping bring a sold-out concert (Jason Aldean, 65,000) to Sanford Stadium for the first time in stadium history. He was also instrumental in development and implementation along with Nike of a new brand identity program which brings consistency in use of colors, logos, lettering and numerals to Georgia sports teams.

He was named recipient of the 2013 Tom Osborne Award presented by the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA) for special achievement and contributions to advanced-practice sports nutrition. McGarity was appointed as the athletic director’s representative to the SEC Executive Committee in 2013. A 1976 graduate of UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, McGarity is a 2012 inductee into the Grady Fellowship, a recognition program to honor those whose influence, achievements and service to the media professions have enhanced the reputation of the Grady College. He was also appointed in 2012 to the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, a position he will hold through 2016.

McGarity oversees a 21-sport athletics program supported by a budget of $99 million. Since becoming Director of Athletics, Georgia teams have won national championships in women’s swimming and diving (2013 and `14) and equestrian (2014) and SEC championships in men’s tennis (2011, ‘13, and ‘14), women’s tennis (2013), women’s tennis SEC Tournament (‘14), women’s swimming and diving (2011, ‘12, ‘13, ‘14), men’s tennis SEC Tournament (2012 and `13), and two SEC eastern division titles in football (2011 and 2012). During that time 18 different Georgia teams have been ranked in the nation’s top 20 and 10 in the top ten. Georgia’s standing in the Learfield Director’s Cup, which annually measures athletic teams success in NCAA championships, has improved from 20th in 2011 to 10th in 2013.

At UF, he served as Executive Associate Athletic Director after serving as both an associate and senior associate athletic director during his tenure. His duties at Florida included assisting the athletic director in daily operations of the department, assisting in preparation and approval of the annual budget and extensive involvement in long-term planning, contracts, competition scheduling and employment searches, among other areas. McGarity was involved in the planning and supervision of several construction projects, including the expansion of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and the William Heavener Football Complex.

McGarity was a letterman on the 1973 Bulldog tennis team and following graduation began his professional career at UGA. After serving as a student assistant from 1973-77, he held positions as assistant sports information director and head women’s tennis coach (1977-82), administrative assistant (1982-88), and assistant athletic director for facilities and event management (1988-92).

McGarity is married to the former Sheryl Holland, who graduated from UGA in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. They have one son, Alex, a graduate of the University of Florida and the University of Georgia.

The 2014 NCEA National Champion Georgia equestrian team looks to continue its dominating ways in the 2014-15 campaign. After finishing with a 9-3 dual-meet record including a 4-2 mark in Southeastern Conference play, the Bulldogs captured the program’s sixth national title. This year’s roster includes several All-American and All-SEC selections, as well as a freshman class that bring impressive resumes with them, adding depth to the Georgia lineup.

“This will be a challenging season as we are defending a national championship title,” head coach Meghan Boenig said. “In addition to having a target on our backs, we have tough non-conference and SEC schedule. We must focus on the process and use each day to get better. I am confident in the leadership of our senior class and the depth and talent of our returners and freshman. Continuing to search for ways to be better and strive for excellence will be key for this team. It is important for us to set the bar high for ourselves and fulfill the tradition and legacy that is the Georgia Way.”

The schedule includes 12 regular-season competitions, including six against Southeastern Conference teams. The schedule also includes a pair of scrimmages, including one against Alabama.

The 2014-15 SEC Championship will be held March 26-28 and hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The season will conclude April 15-18 at the NCEA Championship in Waco, Texas.

Hunt SeatThe Hunt Seat squad returns several familiar faces to the arena. First Team NCEA All-American selection in Equitation on the Flat and Second Team selection in Equitation Over Fences Liza Finsness will be back in action for Georgia. Finsness posted a Flat record of 13-4, a record of 10-4-1 in Fences and led the team in MVPs with 10. Finsness was also named as the SEC Rider of the Year in Equitation on the Flat and SEC Freshman of the Year in Flat and Fences. Meg O’Mara returns after earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team with a 6-3 record in Fences and 5-1 record on the Flat. O’Mara earned two MVPs on the season and went undefeated at the 2014 Southeastern Conference Championship.

Kylee Arbuckle and Megan Southam return for their senior season after combining for a total of 17 wins and five MVPs last season. Leylan Gleeson and Emma Schauder will return after combining for seven appearances in the 2013-14 season.

WesternIn Horsemanship, Heather Schmidt returns to action after being named as a Second Team NCEA All-American. Schmidt posted a 10-7 record with a team-best three MVPs last season. NCEA Honorable Mention Rachel Kolb will be back after going 8-4-2 with two MVPs and posting a season high score of 76.5. All-SEC team members Paige Stawicki and Sara Parr return after going 10-5-2 and 10-4-3 respectively. Vanessa Gillette looks to make an impact for the team after competing in two meets during her rookie season.

Veteran Lauren Tieche, who went 11-5-1 with two MVPs last season, leads the Reining squad. Tieche went undefeated at the NCEA Championship and was also named Reserve Champion at the NRHA Derby Collegiate Challenge. SEC Freshman of the Year Charley Thiel returns after posting 7 wins with an MVP honor along with SEC-All Freshman Claudia Spreng, who owned a 4-2 record. Other returners for Georgia include Lauren Garmon and Caroline Blackshear who totaled eight wins last season. Caroline Robinson and Lindsey Cheek also saw time in the arena during their rookie seasons with a joint seven appearances.

In January of 2009, Georgia riders moved into their spacious new home, the UGA Equestrian Complex, located in Bishop, Ga. The 109-acre farm offers Georgia the finest in equine accommodations. Formerly known as High Point Farm, the facility served the Athens-area equine community with boarding and training facilities since 1993. In 1996, High Point was selected as the training site for the U.S. Dressage Team, which competed in the Summer Olympic Games at the International Horse Park in Conyers, Ga. The Bulldogs have a true home-ring advantage, boasting an impressive 26-4 regular-season dual-meet record at the UGA Equestrian Complex.

Georgia is no stranger to a home-ring advantage, owning a 54-2 all-time record at home. Prior to moving to its home in Bishop, Ga., the Georgia equestrian team shared more than 100 acres with the Animal Science Arena, just minutes from Georgia’s main campus.

The University of Georgia Athletic Association is committed to being the nation’s premier NCEA equestrian program, in both competition and facilities. Plans are in the works to expand the UGA Equestrian Complex to include a 60-stall barn, a fan plaza, a covered arena and two all-purpose arenas.

Meghan Boenig came to Georgia in October of 2001 as the first head coach of the Georgia equestrian program. During her time with the Bulldogs, Boenig has led the program to unprecedented heights including six national titles, six Southern Equestrian Championships, four reserve championships and a 54-5 dual-meet record at home. Boenig also helped lead the charge of having Varsity Equestrian restructured to the National Collegiate Equestrian Association in the fall of 2011.

During the 2013-14 season, Boenig led the Georgia equestrian team to the program’s sixth National Championship. After finishing the regular season with a 9-3 dual-meet record, the Bulldogs earned a second-place finish at the Southeastern Conference Championship. Under Boenig, seven riders were named to the All-SEC teams, two freshmen selected to the SEC All-Freshman team and two riders were named as the SEC Riders of the Year. Under her guidance, six riders landed seven spots on NCEA All-American teams, while 12 earned a place as NCEA Academic All-Americans and another 19 were named to the NCEA Academic Honor Roll. Boenig also saw two riders crowned as the Most Valuable Players of the NCEA Championship, as well as three riders named to the NCEA All-Championship team. Additionally, the team took home the SEC Sportsmanship Award. The team has also excelled academically, compiling the highest team GPA on record, which earned the team the FAR Award. The Bulldogs also took home the coveted Bulldog Cup for the second year in a row.

The 2012-13 Georgia equestrian team finished the season with a 9-5 dual-meet record and its third-straight Reserve National Championship. The Bulldogs also led the Southeastern Conference with 11 all-conference selections and had two riders earn SEC Rider of the Year honors. She also coached four riders to five NCEA First Team All-American honors and had 13 riders land a spot on an NCEA Academic Team and another 21 earn a place on the NCEA Academic Honor Roll.

Boenig lead the 2011-12 equestrian team to a regular season record of 11-2, a 10-meet win streak, a No. 1 ranking and its second Reserve National Championship. Along the way, the Bulldogs defeated nine ranked teams, including a season-sweep of Auburn and South Carolina. The Bulldogs finished second at the Southern Equestrian Championship before claiming its third Reserve Championship and second in as many years.

During the 2010-11 campaign, the Bulldogs again were competing for a championship, when they took on Southeastern Conference foe Auburn in the finals of the VENC National Championship. Georgia came away with its second Reserve Championship, falling 51-49 to the Tigers. The Bulldogs defeated Auburn in the Western Division to finish third overall in the discipline, but Auburn edged Georgia on the Hunt Seat side.

Georgia spent the first months of the 2009-10 season finding its way but the Bulldogs closed their season by winning yet another national crown. This time they needed the first “ride-off” in the sport’s history to edge Texas A&M in the overall standings. In addition, two Georgia Hunt Seaters, Michelle Morris and Emma Lipman, claimed individual championships, the third and fourth such honors in Georgia history.

Boenig has made great strides in developing Georgia’s equestrian program from Square One. The number of riders has tripled from 24 to near 70, while

the number of horses has more than quadrupled going from 12 to over 60. In addition, the staff has grown from Boenig, on her own, to eight full-time members.

She blazed through her first seasons at Georgia with success, winning national titles in both of the program’s first two years on the varsity level. In 2002-03, she coached the University’s first varsity team to the national crown at the VENC in College Station, Texas. The next year she steered her team to a dramatic comeback at the VENC, held at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Ga.Boenig first began to work her magic on Georgia’s club team. When she arrived in Athens in the fall of 2001, her mandate was to bring the club team through the transitional 2001-02 season and elevate the equestrian program to a varsity level. She accomplished the task with flair, leading the Bulldogs to the first of three straight English discipline titles at the precursor to the inaugural VENC held in 2002 in Gainesville, Fla.

During the transitional year Boenig hired a coaching staff, selected the first team, and began selling the sport to the Bulldog Nation. In succeeding years, much of her administrative focus turned to facilities and development.

Her attention to the latter concern led to Georgia’s palatial home in nearby Bishop, Ga., in 2009. The 109-acre layout gives her team the finest training and competition facility of its kind in America. It also fulfilled a twofold dream of Boenig’s that began back in the early days: to give her team a place to call “home” and to ease the burden upon the University’s Animal Science department, which owned the property where the Bulldogs had begun their program.

Beyond Athens, Boenig is heavily involved in shaping the development of varsity equestrian, which is classified as an “emerging” sport by the NCAA. She serves on the Varsity Steering Committee that governs the sport through biannual coaches’ meetings, serving as its chairperson for two seasons before moving to the vice chairperson role this year. She was also a leading advocate for the bracketed tournament format that is currently in existence.

Boenig initiated varsity equestrian’s departure from the meet format associated with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), under whose auspices Georgia competed in 2003. She helped introduce the dual-meet format that SEC schools now use, competing by proposed NCAA rules designed to make the sport more competitive and fan-friendly.

Boenig is a 1999 graduate of Berry College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. Prior to her arrival at Georgia in October of 2001, she spent two years as an assistant coach at Texas A&M during which time she also earned a Master’s Degree in Animal Science.

Her two seasons at Texas A&M were deciding factors in her hiring as the Bulldogs’ inaugural head coach. Georgia sought a coach with the knowledge of working hand-in-hand with a university’s Animal Science community in forging a new equestrian team, something the Aggies had enjoyed during her tenure there.

A native of Powder Springs, Ga., the former Meghan Nolan is married to Markus Boenig. The couple are proud parents of two sons, Josef and Mathew.

Mary Meneely was named the Associate Head Coach of the Georgia equestrian program in March of 2013. Meneely has been a member of the Georgia equestrian coaching staff since April 2010 and was named an Assistant Coach for Georgia’s Western Riding corps in June of 2010 before being promoted to associate head coach in 2013.

In her first season with the Bulldogs, Meneely helped guide the Western squad to a fourth-place finish at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships, including a second-round upset win over TCU. The fourth-place finish helped secure Georgia’s fifth national title.

The following season, her first full season with the Bulldogs, Meneely helped the Western team to a third-place finish at Nationals, which helped propel Georgia to a Reserve Championship.

In 2011-12, the Western squad again brought home a third-place finish at the NCEA National Championship and the Horsemanship MOP, which helped the Bulldogs to its second-straight Reserve Title.

Since the 2011-12 season, Meneely has led the Western team to an impressive 37-21-14 record, including a 25-11-5 mark in Horsemanship and a 22-10-9 record in Reining.

During the 2013-14 season, Meneely guided the Western riders to a 8-3-1 record in Horsemanship and a 7-5 record in Reining.

Meneely helped to coach the program to the 2014 NCEA National Championship, the sixth in program history. Under her guidance, three Western riders earned spots as NCEA All-Americans, as well as picking up the NCEA Western MVP in Reining and SEC Rider of the Year.

Meneely owned and operated Meneely Show Horses, Ltd., of Conyers, Ga., along with her husband Rob. They produced over 450 World and National Championships in both Western and Hunt Seat. During that time Meneely handled all aspects of the business, including recruitment and training of show riders, selection and training of horses, sales and marketing of the business, farm management, and custom design of show clothes.

For three years (1996-99) Meneely developed and taught equestrian courses at Georgia Perimeter College in Conyers.

She and her husband Rob have two sons: Michael and Ryan.

Lisa Anderson begins her fourth season as an assistant coach at Georgia, where she coaches and trains Georgia’s Equitation Over Fences riders. In her four years with the team, Anderson has garnered three Reserve National Championships along with the 2014 National Championship.

In her inaugural season with the Bulldogs, Anderson coached the Hunt Seat team to a third place finish at the 2012 NCEA National Championship. In the following season, the Hunt Seat team was named Reserve National Champions and earned the overall team Reserve National title. In the 2014 season, the national championship adopted the dual-meet format and the team was crowned as the NCEA National Champions.

Since the 2011-12 season, Anderson has guided the Equitation Over Fences squad to a 20-13-3 dual-meet record. She has coached several NCEA All-Americans and All-SEC selections, as well as the Most Valuable Player of the NCEA National Championship. Anderson has coached three riders in the WEF Collegiate Challenge including a high-score award winner and semifinalist.

After graduating cum laude from Barnard College, Columbia University in New York, Anderson managed her own horse business for over thirty years. During this time she coached hundreds of top students at the highest levels of United States Equestrian Federation competition.

While beginning her riding career in equitation and hunter/jumper divisions, Anderson also successfully competed and coached in international three-day events and was named sixth leading rider in the US in 1989.

Before coming to coach at Georgia in 2011, Anderson trained riders and showed horses out of Glory Farm in Georgia, as well as, Lamplight Equestrian Center, Grove Place Farm and Copper Ridge Farm in Ill. She has trained numerous horses and riders in qualifying for national USEF equitation, hunter and jumper competitions.

Anderson received her USHJA Trainer Certification in 2012 and has been accepted into the 2013 USEF Judges Mentor Program.

Anderson is married to Tim Reed since 1992 and they live on a farm with their four sons: Marshall, MacArthur, Louis and Pierre Reed.

Amber Bradley joined the Georgia program in 2006 as Farm Manager. In her position she oversees not only the care of Georgia’s 60-plus horses, but also the facilities used by the Equestrian team.

A native of Pauline, S.C., Bradley has enjoyed a lifelong association with horses. She grew up on a 124-acre horse farm and first began showing Hunters & jumpers at the age of five. By age 15 she was managing her family’s farm.

In 2002, Bradley moved to Georgia, managed a 300-acre horse farm, supervised three community living facilities and attended college at Athens Tech. She was also a member of the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association, from which she won several division titles, two state crowns and the Southeast regional championship.

Bradley and her husband Andrew -- who won the team’s “Mane Dawg” award in 2008 for extraordinary service to the program -- are the parents of two children, son James Audie and daughter Agnes.

Herm Sherwin is in his third season as the volunteer Reining coach for the University of Georgia equestrian team. In his initial season with the team, Sherwin helped coach the Western team to a third place finish at the 2012 NCEA National Championship and the overall team Reserve National Championship.

In his second season, he again assisted the Western squad to repeat their third place finish at the 2013 National Championship, as the team picked up their third-straight Reserve Champion title.

In last year’s campaign, Sherwin helped coach the team to the 2014 NCEA National Championship. He also coached the 2014 NCEA Most Valuable Player in Reining, as well as the SEC Reiner of the Year.

The Wyoming, N.Y., native has over 25 years of horse training and coaching experience in both Western all-around events and Reining. Sherwin has had an extensive personal career, including seven world championship titles in both Western all-around events and Reining, as well as multiple NRHA Futurity and Derby wins. The success has carried over to his students, as he has coached several world and national champion riders in many different Western events. He is the owner of HS Performance horses located in Watkinsville, Ga.

For his committment to the Georgia equestrian team, Sherwin was the recipient of the 2014 Mane Dawg Award.

The Georgia equestrian team capped off its 2013-14 season by hoisting the NCEA National Championship trophy for the sixth time in program history. The Bulldogs also had six riders earn seven NCEA All-American honors, led the SEC with 11 riders earning 14 All-SEC honors, had two SEC Freshmen of the Year and two SEC Riders of the Year.

The Bulldogs began the 2013 season ranked No. 1 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) pre-season poll and remained there until falling to Auburn on the road in November for their first season loss. Georgia put up only two additional losses against Kansas State and South Carolina, ending the regular season 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC.

Though the Bulldogs saw just three losses during the regular season, their No. 1 ranking dropped to No. 7. After opening the spring season ranked sixth, Georgia put up back-to-back wins against Delaware State and the Tennessee-Martin. A loss to USC at home in February landed Georgia at No. 7, its lowest ranking of the year. However a win over Auburn in late February boosted the Bulldogs back to No 3. After a strong spring season, the Bulldogs entered the SEC Championship ranked No. 2 in the NCEA poll.

Georgia earned the No. 2 seed in the SEC Championship after losing the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed to South Carolina. The Bulldogs dispatched third-seeded Auburn 12-8 to advance to the SEC Finals where they would face top-seeded South Carolina. The Bulldogs rode to what looked to be a one point victory, but after several score reviews, it was found that the teams had tied 10-10, with South Carolina coming away with the SEC Title in raw score.

Though the team was not satisfied with the result of the SEC Championship, the Bulldogs were fueled by the outcome.

After a first round bye in the NCEA Championship, Georgia handed Baylor an 8-7 win in the quarterfinal round, advancing it to the semifinal round where the Bulldogs would take on Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs sent Oklahoma State packing with an 8-6 victory, setting up a rematch against South Carolina for the NCEA National Title.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-1 lead in Equitation on the Flat, but South Carolina was able to take a 7-5 lead after taking 3-1 decisions in both Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship. The Reiners posted clutch performance after clutch performance, allowing Georgia to come away with the title. Trailing 7-5 going into the event, the Bulldogs knew they needed their best from the Reining team. McKenzie Lantz opened the event with a 145-134.5 win for Georgia’s first point, which brought the overall score to 7-6. Lauren Garmon scored the tying point with her 138.5-0 win. With the event tied at 7-7, Lauren Tieche turned in an event high 147.5, which beat allowing Georgia to pull ahead 8-7. Layla Choate secured South Carolina’s lone point of the event, but it was not enough, as the Bulldogs came away 2,323.5-2,219 in the raw score.

In addition to the title, the Bulldogs had three riders earn individual honors. Lantz was named the Most Outstanding Player in Reining after going 2-1. Liza Finsness was named the MOP in Equitation on the Flat with her 3-0 record. Lantz and Finsness joined Abby O’Mara on the All-Championship team.

After bring the national championship back to Athens, the equestrian team was honored by the SEC with its annual Sportsmanship Award and took home its second straight Bulldog Cup at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet. The Bulldog Cup is awarded annually and recognizes the team that excels academically, supports their peers in athletic competition, and consistently serves the community. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee initiated the award in 2010. In addition to the Bulldog Cup, Kate Skoglund was given the Marilyn Vincent Scholar-Athlete Award, while Julia Hemingway earned the Hornsby Howell Community Service Award. Skoglund and Maria Salazar were given the Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to a student-athlete, or athletes, from each team who had the highest GPA at the conclusion of the last academic year.

Georgia equestrians were honored for their work in the classroom as well, as nearly 70 percent of the team earned at least a 3.00 GPA during the 2013 fall semester. In all, 48 Bulldogs were named to the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll. Thirty members of the team posted GPAs of between 3.50-3.99, while 18 recorded a GPA of between 3.00-3.49. Sydney Beasley and Kate Skoglund earned Presidential Scholar honors for finishing the semester with a perfect 4.00 GPA while taking 14 or more hours. Morgan Beavers also posted a 4.00 GPA in the fall. Additionally, 19 equestrians were named to the Dean’s List, earning a GPA of 3.50 or higher while taking 14 or more hours. The Georgia equestrian team finished with a program-best 3.41 team GPA for the 2013-14 school year. The 3.41 GPA was also the highest among all sports, allowing the team to take home the FAR Award. Additionally, 17 Bulldogs graduated from Georgia in the spring.

From the arena, to the classroom, to the community, the Georgia equestrian team raised an already high bar even higher.

GEORGIA EQUESTRIAN


HistoryIn 1998, Equestrian was classified as an NCAA emerging sport. At that time there were six participating teams (Auburn, Fresno State, Georgia, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Texas A&M). Today there are currently 24 colleges and universities offering Equestrian as a varsity sport and more continue to add the program each year.

The competition format is a head-to-head, where a rider from each team competes on the same horse. The rider earning the highest score on that particular horse wins the point for their team. At the end of the competition, the team with the most points wins the competition. The horse and rider match-up is determined by a random draw. Prior to their competition ride each competitor is given a four-minute warm-up (five minute for Reining) to familiarize themselves with the horse and prepare for their competition ride. This format of competition was developed to level the playing field between riders and to allow each rider the same opportunity on the same horse. There is only one elite level of competition for the four events.

The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (formerly Varsity Equestrian) was created to advance the sport of Equestrian from emerging to championship status with the NCAA by promoting the benefits of Equestrian to potential institutions, riders, parents, horse industry professionals and sponsors while developing the rules and format of competition.

The National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championships (NCEAC) is currently held in Waco, Texas. 12 hunter seat and 12 western teams are invited to compete. The NCEA Selection Committee invites these teams based on their win/loss record throughout the season. The NCEAC is made possible with the help of generous sponsors, volunteers and donors of current universities and local horse trainers that contribute competition horses, tack and horse transport. Two nationally recognized and carded judges in both Hunter Seat and Western travel to Texas to judge the four days of competition. More than 200 student-athletes from across the country compete at the Championships.

Many people within the horse industry have united together to advance the sport of Equestrian to full NCAA championship status. In order to attain this goal and hold a NCAA sponsored Equestrian National Championship, there must be 40 Division I/II schools that sponsor Equestrian at their institution.

NCEA FAQsHow many girls are on a team?There is no roster size limit. The teams range from 15 to 85 girls. The average team has about 46 members.

Can NCEA teams only compete NCAA?No, schools that are a member of the NCEA are permitted to compete in both the NCAA-NCEA head to head format and IHSA (club) competitions. However, universities can only compete in one National Championship event.

How many coaches are there?There can be anywhere from 1-3 coaches. Some teams also have volunteer coaches that are designated by the team, one western and one hunt seat for the whole season.

Where do the teams practice?Practice and competition facilities can be owned by the athletics department or can be multiple use facilities on campus partnered with the Agriculture or Animal Science Department. Some programs lease a private facility.

Who provides the horses?Most programs have their own string of horses for the team to practice and compete on. These horses have been donated, purchased, or are leased for the competition season.

Typically how many competitions are there?Teams can have up to 15 dates of competition, not including conference or national championships. Competitions that last more than one day, or tournaments can be considered 1 date, up to 5 times.

What does it cost to run an Equestrian Team?Annual operating budgets can range from $100,000 to $450,000, depending on the size of your program. The average cost per student athlete is $3,000 to $7,000.

What about grades?The average equestrian GPA is 3.2

Are there scholarships?The sport of Equestrian can offer up to 15 scholarships per team. The NCAA defines Equestrian as an equivalency sport, allowing the scholarships to be divided amongst the team.

Can Student-athletes receive course credit?Some Universities will offer class credit for participation

Key Terms in EquestrianCrop A short whip used in riding, used only as an aid to reinforce the rider’s leg.

DiagonalsThe correct posting, up/down motion, of the rider in sequence with diagonal movement of the horse’s legs at the trot.

Equitation / HorsemanshipIn competitions, these indicate that riders are being judged on their ability to control and show the horse while maintaining the correct riding position. Riders have the added challenge of riding an unfamiliar horse, one that they draw for in a lottery system just before their event.

Equitation Over FencesAn individual performance where each rider shows a horse over 8-10 jumps approximately three feet high. Riders are judged on their ability to position the horse correctly at the jumps and avoid interfering with the horse’s balance, while maintaining the correct riding position and producing a smooth, polished performance.

Figure Eight Two circles connected by a change of direction, most often seen in Reining patterns.

Gait Three ways — canter/lope, trot/jog, or walk — by which a horse can move by lifting the feet in different order or rhythm.

HorsemanshipRefers to an event in Western discipline which is judged on a predetermined pattern consisting of several maneuvers is performed by each rider. The rider’s overall position and effectiveness in the saddle are major factors in scoring.

Hunt SeatThe category of Equitation English riders compete in, whose foundation lies in jumping and riding across country, such as foxhunting.

Leads They are determined at the canter/lope by which front foot is leading. Correct leads have the inside foreleg reaching furthest.

Natural AidsBody signals from the seat, legs, hands and voice to communicate commands to the horse, all the while appearing comfortable, relaxed and balanced. These signals should be subtle or imperceptible to the judge and spectators and exaggerated shifting of the rider’s weight is not desirable. The resulting performance shown by the horse is not to be considered more important than the methods used by the rider in obtaining them.

ReiningIn this class, Western riders perform an individual, pre-assigned pattern from memory, demonstrating a variety of stops, turns and maneuvers at various speeds. The emphasis on this class is on precision, technical application of natural aids and the rider’s ability to show unfamiliar horses.

RollbackA turn performed in Equitation Over Fences class to show control of the horse and rider’s ability to maintain a position throughout a turn. A tight turn performed between two Fences. In Western Reining, a rollback is a 180 degree pivot with speed after a halt.

Warm-UpsPractice time before the classes, normally 4-5 minutes. The horses will be schooled, or prepared for competition using stretching and suppling exercises at various gaits, or practice jumps if necessary by riders who will not compete the day of the show.

Sliding Stop A smooth stop from the lope, in which the horse is supposed to balance on its back feet while the front feet continue to move.

Dual-Meet FormatThe National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) classifies Equestrian as an “emerging” sport. Until 2003, all collegiate equestrian shows were conducted under the auspices of the Inter-collegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). Geor-gia riders departed from that format for the 2003-04 season. Since then, they have competed in the dual-meet format governed by proposed NCAA rules set forth in the biannual equestrian coaches meetings hosted by the United States of America Equestrian Federation.

Teams compete in four events at each dual meet: English Equitation Over Fences, English Equitation, Western Horsemanship and Western Reining. In each event a minimum of four athletes from each team ride head-to-head on the same set of horses, which are provided by the host school. Riders are assigned to the horse in a random draw and face the challenge of riding an unfamiliar horse after a brief timed warm-up period. A point is earned when a rider’s score is higher than their opponent riding the same horse.

General ScoringHunt Seat riders are scored on a scale of 1-100. There are nine maneuvers each worth 10 points, plus an overall score worth 10 points, to total 100 possible points per ride. Maneuvers are scored on this scale: 10=Excellent; 9=Very Good; 8=Good; 7=Fairly Good; 6=Satisfactory; 5=Sufficient; 4=In-sufficient; 3=Fairly Bad; 2=Bad; 1=Very Bad; 0=Not Executed. Scores usually range from 70-85, de-pending on the judge. Western riders are scored on a 70-point scale. There are a minimum of eight maneuvers which are scored on the following scale: +1.5=Excellent, +1=Very Good, +.5=Good, 0=Correct, -.5=Poor, -1=Very Poor, -1.5=Extremely Poor. Scores range from 68 to 74. Horseman-ship and English Equitation riders are judged on their ability to control and show the horse while maintaining the correct riding position. Riders in Equitation Over Fences are judged on their abil-

ity to position the horse correctly and not interfere with its balance while maintaining the correct rid-ing position for a smooth, polished performance. Reiners are judged for precision and application of natural aids as they execute intricate maneuvers at varying speeds.

English Equitation Over FencesEach rider jumps the same predetermined course, usually consisting of eight to 10 jumps that are approximately 3-feet high. The judge is looking at the rider’s position, consistency of pace and accuracy of leads, turns and distances executed to produce a smooth, polished performance.

English Equitation on the FlatA pattern consisting of nine maneuvers is performed within a rectangular-shaped arena marked by letters. Maneuvers are called for at specific letters and can be circles, transitions and serpentines among others. The judge is looking at the rider’s position and effectiveness at guiding her horse through the individual maneuvers.

Western HorsemanshipA predetermined pattern consisting of several maneuvers is performed by each rider. Consideration for scoring is based on the quality of those maneuvers, including pivots, stops, backs and circles, extensions at all gaits and consistency of pace. The rider’s overall position and effectiveness in the saddle are also major factors.

Western ReiningIn this event each rider rides the same preassigned pattern from memory, performing such maneuvers as spins, sliding stops, rollbacks and circles. The circles are either large and fast or small and slow. The judge is looking for accuracy and correctness of maneuvers, correct speed for the maneuver being performed, the horse being willfully guided and overall quality of the Reining pattern.

About SEC Equestrian

The Southeastern Conference adopted the sport of equestrian during the 2012-13 academic year. The four programs that currently comprise the SEC have a rich history of elite success in the sport.

Since the National Collegiate Equestrian Association began contesting a national championship in 2002, the only four programs to ever win a national championship in the sport of equestrian are the four members of the SEC: Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas A&M. The annual NCEA Championship is held in Waco, Texas, each year.

Georgia has tallied a league-leading six overall national championships, including three consecutive from 2008-10 and most recently in 2014. Auburn has three national titles, while South Carolina and Texas A&M each have two overall national titles to their credit.

The three schools of the formerly 12-member SEC have been contesting a yearly Southern Equestrian Championship since 2003, which in 2012-13 was replaced by the first-ever SEC Championship, involving all four schools.

The Southern Equestrian Championships were held on campus sites on a rotating basis. Georgia won a league-leading six Southern Equestrian Championship titles, while Auburn captured three and South Carolina one.

The first-ever SEC equestrian meet was held on September 9, 2012 when Georgia hosted Texas A&M in Bishop, Ga. In March of 2013, the first-ever SEC Championship in the sport of equestrian was held in Auburn, Ala., with South Carolina taking home the inaugural trophy.

U.S. News & World Report ranks the Terry College’s BBA program 19th among public business schools.

U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 “Best Colleges” edition has UGA ranked 21st among public universities.

According to the Open Doors 2012 list, Georgia ranked fifth in the nation in the number of students who participate in summer and other short-term study abroad programs.
