As the South Dakota State equestrian team en-ters the third year of the Megan Rossiter era, theyprepare for another season of change. In her firstseason, Rossiter’s Jackrabbits stopped competing inInternational Horse Show Association events tofocus exclusively on National Collegiate EquestrianAssociation events.

A year after shifting the focus to NCEA, and ayear removed from their last visit, the Jackrabbitwestern team returned to NCEA Nationals in 2012,only to fall to Kansas State in the opening round.

Last year in 2013, the hunt seat team joined thewestern squad at NCEA Nationals for the first timeever, and in another series of firsts, both squads ad-vanced to the second round. The western squadrode to a 5-3 win over UT-Martin, while the huntseat riders tied TCU 4-4, but completed the upsetwin in a tiebreaker.

More changes take effect this season when thetwo disciplines combine to form one team, whichRossiter thinks benefits the Jackrabbits, and givesthem a chance top last season’s success.

“Our hunt seat riders performed well last yearwhen we needed strong rides in every event to getour bigger wins, like the win against top-rankedGeorgia,” Rossiter said. “We won’t know until we’reable to start competing some of the freshman howstrong we can be this year, however we’re confidentin the athletes we recruited. Advancing as a totalteam helps us, and makes us stronger as a wholethan some of the other teams we compete against.I’m excited for the change.”

That much improved hunt seat team lost four sen-iors to graduation, including NCEA Honorable Men-tion All-American Lauren Kerr, and three more thatrode at NCEA Nationals last season, but still returnsa good group riders.

“In the hunt seat events, our strong returning ath-letes include Santana Wright and Jordan Goodall,”Rossiter said. “We’ll also depend heavily on fresh-man Natalie Howard and Blair Julia Wright.”

Wright rode in both fences and flat in all 16events last season as a junior, posting a 5-11 markover fences, with one MVP, and an even 8-8 markon the flat, with a trio of MVP honors. She also rep-resented the Jackrabbits at the prestigious WinterEquestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., in February.Goodall gained valuable experience last year inboth hunt seat events, making her best rides overfences, posting a 5-7 mark as a sophomore.

Senior Laura Dunlavy earned NCEA All-Americanhonors in reining last year as a junior, and leads ayoung and talented group of Jackrabbit western rid-ers that lost three experienced horsemanship riders, but only one reiner.

I expect another solid year out of seniors Dunlavyand Shelby Webb, who both put together standoutjunior seasons,” Rossiter said of her western team.“Danielle Baker played a key role last year, evenafter we switched over into the reining. Dependingon where we need her this year, Baker may be our

only athlete to compete in both the reining andhorsemanship.”

After the late switch, Baker went posted a 3-7mark in reining after posting a 4-3 mark in sevenmeets in the horsemanship ring. Dunlavy competedin all 15 western competitions last year, posting animpressive 12-3 mark.

A skilled athlete and rider, Raivenne Scott rodewell in her freshman year, posting a 5-10 markwith an MVP to her credit, so coming back hersophomore year with some more confidence andexperience in collegiate competition should pavethe way for further success in 2013-14.

Rossiter expects both Webb and sophomore LexusHoffman to play key roles in the horsemanship ring.Webb led all SDSU horsemanship riders with an 8-4 mark last year, while Hoffman compiled a re-spectable 5-6-1 mark in just her first year ofcollegiate riding.

After riding in an intrasquad scrimmage on Sept.13-14 at the DeHaan Equestrian Center, theJackrabbits open the season at the Willis Invita-tional, hosted by Baylor, on Sept. 22-23, withshows against UT-Martin, New Mexico State andthe host Bears on the slate.

“Last year we started out the season with threestraight losses against Texas A&M and OklahomaState at home and Kansas State on the road, andcompeting against those teams just made us rideharder and better, and really prepared us for therest of the season,” Rossiter said of last year’s start.“This year we start our season at the Willis Invita-tional with three meets in one weekend. It’s a greatway to start the season, however it’ll be tough witha young team.”

The Jacks ride in the first of their five scheduledmeets at home on Oct. 19, and then end the regu-lar season by hosting the Independent Champi-onships on March 28-29 at the DeHaan Centerbefore closing the season at the NCEA NationalChampionships on April 17-19 in Waco, Texas.

Jackrabbit senior SANTANA WRIGHT competed in all 16 shows in both hunt seat events last sea-son and represented the team at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla.

Jackrabbit senior LAURA DUNLAVY competed in all 15 western events in 2012-13 as a junior, posting a 12-3 record on her way to earning NCEA All-American honors

HISTORYIn 1998, the NCAA classified equestrian as an emerging sport. At that time, six teams

(Auburn, Fresno State, Georgia, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Texas A&M) partic-ipated in the sport. Today, 22 colleges and universities offer equestrian as a varsity sport, and more continue to add the program each year.

The teams compete in a head-to-head format, where a rider from each team com-petes on the same horse. The rider earning the highest score on that particular horsewins the point for their team. At the end of the competition, the team with the mostpoints wins the competition. A random draw determines the horse and rider match-up.

Prior to their competition ride, each competitor gets a four-minute warm-up (fiveminute for reining) to familiarize themselves with the horse and prepare for their com-petition ride.

This format of competition was developed to level the playing field between riders andto allow each rider the same opportunity on the same horse. There is only one elite levelof competition for the four events.

The National Collegiate Equestrian Association was created to advance the sport ofEquestrian from emerging to championship status with the NCAA by promoting thebenefits of Equestrian to potential institutions, riders, parents, horse industry profession-als and sponsors while developing the rules and format of competition.

Waco, Texas currently hosts The National Collegiate Equestrian Association Champi-onships, where 12 teams earn a chance to compete. The NCEA Selection Committee in-vites these teams based on their win/loss record throughout the season.

The NCEA Championships are made possible with the help of generous sponsors, vol-unteers and donors of current universities and local horse trainers that contribute com-petition horses, tack and horse transport. Two nationally recognized and carded judges inboth hunt seat and western travel to Texas to judge the three days of competition. Morethan 200 student-athletes from across the country compete at the championships.

Many people within the horse industry united together to advance the sport of eques-trian to full NCAA championship status. In order to attain this goal and hold an NCAAsponsored equestrian national championship, there must be 40 Division I and or Divi-sion II schools that sponsor equestrian at their institution.

MISSION• To provide amateur equestrian student-athletes the opportunity to compete in a

collegiate national championship event

• To promote for equal collegiate opportunities for female athletes through collegiatelevel equestrian competition

• To assist in the development of amateur equestrian student-athletes through collegiate level equestrian competition

• To promote the advancement of equestrian from emerging to championship statuswith the NCAA

• To generate growth of and interest in equestrian activity via the marketing, promotion and publicity of sport benefits to universities, riders, prospective student-athletes, parents, horse industry professionals and sponsors

• To support the enhancement of participating institutions who offer varsity level collegiate equestrian programs

• To preserve the integrity of the sport through ongoing rule and format development

The South Dakota State Equestrian team is always looking for quality horses to lease or accept asdonations for the program. Completion of the DeHaan Equestrian Center in 2008 more thantripled the team's previous training facilities. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the $3.6 million cli-mate-controlled facility features an indoor riding arena, 41 stalls, areas for grooming, washingand preparing the horses, as well as separate on-site work areas for veterinarians and farriers. The DeHaan Equestrian Center property consists of a total of 160 acres, with approximately 35acres of fenced paddocks where horses receive daily turnout.

SDSU utilizes horses from both western and hunt seat disciplines. The hunt seat horses consist ofhunters, jumpers and horses with backgrounds in eventing. Hunt seat horses with training andshow experience on the flat and/or jumping over three feet are preferred. On the western side,SDSU looks for horses with training and show experience in either horsemanship or reining. Inorder for the riders to prepare for the level of competition in the National Collegiate EquestrianAssociation, SDSU can only accept horses that meet these levels of training and experience.

If leasing or donating your horse to the program is something that interests you, please contactSDSU Head Equestrian Coach Megan Rossiter by phone at (605) 688-4506 or by email [email protected]

Located along the U.S. Highway 14Bypass north and east of the SDSU cam-pus, the Nathelle and Lawrence DeHaanEquestrian Center became the new homefor Jackrabbit Equestrian at South DakotaState University when it opened in the fallof 2008.

Dedicated on Oct. 15, 2008, projectbenefactor Nathelle DeHaan’s avid supportof South Dakota State University and lovefor horses grew to make the SDSUEquestrian program and the Nathelle andLawrence DeHaan Equestrian Center areality.

A 1937 graduate of South Dakota State,Nathelle DeHaan provided the initial gift tobuild the facility. For nearly five decades, she and her late husband, Lawrence playedan active role in the local horse community, traveling to judge and show quarter horses.

Nathaelle DeHann died on Jan. 24, 2011at the age of 96, but not before she real-ized her dream of seeing the day whenyoung women could attend college, com-pete at the highest level and create experi-ences and memories that last a lifetime.

“The Equestrian program provides awonderful opportunity for young women,”Nathelle said at the dedication of the facili-ty. “I’m excited about the future of theSDSU Equestrian team.”

Completion of the building in the springof 2008 more than tripled the team’s pre-vious training facilities. At nearly 26,000

square feet, the $3.6 million climate-con-trolled facility features an indoor ridingarena, 42 stalls with additional areas forgrooming, washing and preparing the hors-es, as well as separate on-site work areasfor veterinarians and farriers. In addition, the additional area for the horses, thebuilding houses a team locker roomequipped with a study area.

“The DeHaan Equestrian Center is abeautiful and thoroughly modern facility, equal to any collegiate equestrian center inthe country,” SDSU Head Equestrian Coach

Megan Rossiter said. “A facility this sizeallows us to provide a first-class practiceand competition venue for our student-ath-letes and spectators.”

The additional space allows the team’sroster to eventually grow to 60 riders whilecontinuing to offer the NCAA-maximum 15full scholarships. The proximity of theNathelle and Lawrence DeHaan EquestrianCenter to the main SDSU campus makes itunique in the collegiate equestrian ranksand should allow for the equestrian pro-gram to become further ingrained in theSDSU Athletic Department as it continuesto mature.

Once the SDSU Foundation completesfund-raising for Phase I, planning beginsfor the second phase of the project. PhaseII includes the addition of a stall barn, alarge outdoor riding arena, viewing rooms, coaching offices, a meeting room and tro-phy room.

“Completion of phase II would allow theprogram to continue attracting top-levelstudent-athletes from around the countryand help us enhance the growth of ourequestrian program,” Rossiter said.

For more information on the SDSUEquestrian team, or to make a donation forscholarship support or facilities, please con-tact the Jackrabbit development office byphone at (605) 697-7475.

For the first time in school history, both the western and hunt seat teams qualified for NCEA Nationalsin 2013, and also for the first time, both squads advanced to the second round

A new era of athletic competition at SouthDakota State University began in the fall of2005 as the Jackrabbits fielded their first varsityequestrian team.

Equestrian emerged as a natural fit withSDSU’s status as a land-grant institution withstrong ties to agriculture. SDSU currently offersmajors in pre-veterinary and animal sciencewithin its College of Agriculture and BiologicalSciences, while offering coursework in equinestudies.

The program formed in the spring of 2004,making equestrian the 21st varsity sport atSDSU, 10 sports for men and 11 for women.

Megan McGee came on board as the pro-gram’s first head coach on Aug. 31, 2004, andserved in that position through the 2009-10season. Joe Humphrey joined the coaching staffin the spring of 2005, and took over the headcoaching duties on an interim basis from the fallof 2010 through June 2011, when MeganRossiter took over the program.

During the inaugural 2005-06 season, theJackrabbits put together a schedule that includedhead-to-head competitions against some of thetop Varsity Equestrian programs in the country, including opening competition Oct. 1, 2005, atKansas State. SDSU filled out its schedule bycompeting in Intercollegiate Horse Show Associ-ation events, something the team did throughthe 2010-11 season before switching exclusivelyto varsity equestrian shows.

During the 2006-07 season, Kaylee DeVriesbecame the first Jackrabbit rider to qualify fornational competition, earning a trip to IHSA Na-tionals in intermediate equitation on the flat. Also during the spring of 2007, the JackrabbitWestern squad earned a selection to compete inthe Varsity Equestrian National Championships inWaco, Texas.

The SDSU equestrian program continues itsrise in the collegiate equestrian ranks to this day.Eleven riders qualified for regional competitionduring the 2007-08 season, with four earningtrips to national competition. The 2008-09 sea-son saw 10 Jackrabbit riders qualify for regionalevents, and a school-record eight riders thatmoved on to national competition.

The Jackrabbit western team boasts a total offive appearances at Varsity Equestrian Nationals, now known as the NCEA National Champi-onships, held annually in Waco, Texas, with thehunt seat squad making its initial appearance atnationals in 2013, when both teams madeschool history by becoming the first Jackrabbitteams to advance at Nationals.

Starting in the 2013-14 seasons, teams canonly qualify for NCEA Nationals as one team, meaning that a school’s western and/or huntseat team can no longer qualify on its own.

WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

2013-14 JACKRABBIT EQUESTRIAN 35

South Dakota State University provides its student-athletes the opportunityto train and compete in some of the finest facilities in The Summit League.Within the past five years, SDSU added or enhanced several Jackrabbit athleticfacilities, including:

• Construction of new on-campus baseball and softball competition fields;• Construction of a new equestrian center;• Installation of new video boards and scoreboards at Coughlin-Alumni

Stadium and Frost Arena;• Completion of a practice soccer field

SDSU further enhanced its student-athlete facilities in 2009 with the com-pletion of the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center. Located in the north end zoneof Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center houses anacademic center for use by all Jackrabbit student-athletes, as well as newlocker room and training facilities for the SDSU football team.

Construction on the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center marks the first stage ofa master plan to dramatically modernize athletic facilities at SDSU.

The $6 million donated by Sioux Falls bankers Dana Dykhouse and T. DennySanford in the fall of 2007 set in motion the construction of the first major ath-letic building on campus since Frost Arena in 1973.

Future additions to the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center, which would be in-cluded in a comprehensive athletic facilities master plan, would house offices, meeting rooms and locker facilities for all outdoor sports at South Dakota StateUniversity.

SDSU added state of the art video scoreboards in Frost Arena in 2005

The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center opened in the fall of 2009

With an enrollment of 12,554 students in the fall of 2013, South DakotaState University remains the state’s largest institution of higher education. Stu-dents from all 50 states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU, a public,land-grant institution.

SDSU granted over 80,000 degrees since its charter in 1881, with degreesoffered through these nine colleges:

PROGRESSIVE

2013-14 JACKRABBIT EQUESTRIAN 37

INNOVATIVE

South Dakota State offers 21 varsity sports with Jackrabbit teams com-peting at the NCAA Division I level. Football competes in the Division IFootball Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Confer-ence, while 18 sports compete in The Summit League. Wrestling competesin the Western Wrestling Conference, while equestrian currently competesin the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.

Evolution of a NicknameTwo theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became

known as the Jackrabbits. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” camefrom a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaperfollowing a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota andSouth Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspa-per, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people be-lieve that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname fromthat beginning.

The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in “The Jackrab-bit”, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the ideathat the yearbook is called “The Jackrabbit” because a group of juniorswished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook.Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname.

Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the schoolathletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets, which made sense, because theschool went by the name of South Dakota State College of Agriculture andMechanic Arts in 1907.

The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to-35 miles per hour, withbursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60miles per hour.

Properly speaking, Jackrabbits should not be called rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in opencountry, whereas rabbits - like cottontails - live in brushy habitats.

Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long; weigh from six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares do not eat meat; they eat tenderherbs in the summer and woody twigs and bark in the winter.

Located in Brookings, a growing community of about 22,000 people,South Dakota State University sits 20 miles west of the Minnesota borderand 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookingssits at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29.

Brookings and the surrounding area feature tremendous recreational andcultural opportunities. The city features a vibrant downtown area with shop-ping, nightlife opportunities and a new interactive children’s museum.Brookings also maintains an extensive park and recreational trail system, with two 18-hole golf courses, and serves as a gateway to first-class fishingand hunting areas throughout eastern South Dakota.

South Dakota State University also houses several facilities, including mu-seums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage.

The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including earlySioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life andthe exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Mu-seum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for ex-hibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota.

The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, locatedsouth and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents andtourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one ofthe top-10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. Adding to its honors,McCrory Gardens earned the distinction of being named an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation.

The community houses several recognizable companies including RainbowPlay Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufac-turing and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and displaysystems.

The South Dakota Art Museum is free and open to the public

McCrory Gardens honors Professor S.A. McCrory, who headed the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences from 1947 until his death in 1964
