The Kansas State Equestrian Team started out as a club sport in 1999 with Teresa Slough as the sole coach. Although the team had about 20 members that first year, the Wildcats won their first na-tional title with Kelly Gratny earning the Reserve National Championship in Individual Western Horsemanship. Since becoming a varsity sport on campus in 2000, the team has since earned 10 na-tional titles, including a Reserve National Championship at the 2009 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.

With the new requirements Title IX placed on schools to ensure equal opportunities for female athletes, K-State added Equestrian as their newest sport in 2000. The agricultural background of the schoolwas a clear influence, as well as a strong interest from club members and other students on campus.

The team started out in a unique position competing in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competitions. This format required a team to show riders with all levels of experience, which al-lowed girls with little or no previous experience to compete as much as those with more knowledgeable backgrounds. The team competed simultaneously in varsity competitions where schools showedtheir best riders against each other. In 2006, however, the NCAA ruled that varsity schools could only compete in one national championship, which meant choosing between IHSA and varsity. Due tothe competitiveness of varsity competitions, this is the primary format in which K-State competes.

A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:• 34 riders have qualified individually for the IHSA National Championships • Three Hunter Seat and three Western teams have qualified for IHSA National Championships • Five top ten team finishes at IHSA Nationals• 2006 Reserve National Championship Western Team • Qualified for seven Varsity National Championships • 2006 - Sixth place Hunter Seat team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships • 2006 - Sixth place Western team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships • 2007 - Fourth place overall team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships• 2007 - Third place Hunter Seat team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships• 2007 - Sixth place Western team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships • 2007 - Sara Weller selected to ride at NRHA Derby• 2008 - Third place Western team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships • 2008 - Fifth place overall team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships• 2008 - Morgan Campbell selected to ride at NRHA Derby• 2009 - Fifth place Western team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships • 2009 - Alyssa Freeman qualifies for VENC as an individual in horsemanship• 2010 - National runner-up Western team finish at Varsity Equestrian National Championships; MikaelaSundgren qualifies for WENC as individual in horsemanship; Tara Hallan qualifies for VENC as invdividualin reining; Katie Mellon qualifies for WEF Challenge as individual in Fences

A CLOSER LOOK AT VARSITY EQUESTRIAN

In 1998, equestrian was classified as an NCAA emerging sport. Currently 23 Division I and II uni-versities, including four Big 12 schools, sponsor the sport at the varsity level, and more continue toadd the program to their athletic department each year. For the most current list of equestrian pro-grams or more information on Varsity Equestrian, please visit www.varsityequestrian.com.

COMPETITIONCompetitions will be based on a win/loss record point system. When two riders compete on the samehorse, the rider with the highest score will receive 1 point for their team. In each event, a minimumof four athletes will compete for each team. Each rider entered from each team shall ride the sametest on the same set of horses that was decided during the draw unless a substitution or alternateis approved. In head to head equestrian competition, there are two disciplines, Hunter Seat andWestern with four events; Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat and over Fences, and Western Horse-manship and Reining. Hunter Seat riders are scored on a scale of 0-100. In Equitation over Fences,a 70 would be considered an average ride. Equitation on the Flat tests consist of nine maneuversand one collective mark. Each maneuver receives a score of 0-10 from the judge and a mark of fiveis considered average. Western riders start with a score of 70 and can be rewarded or penalizedpoints based on the quality of their maneuvers. Maneuver scores are awarded from +1.5 to -1.5with a 0 considered average. Horsemanship patterns consist of 7-9 maneuvers and Reining patternspatterns have 7-8 maneuvers. In horsemanship, flat and reining each rider will also be awarded acollective mark which is the judges’ overall impression of the rider’s performance.

VARSITY EQUESTRIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPSBecause Varsity Equestrian features two unique disciplines, there are three team titles up for grabseach year at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships: Hunter Seat, Western, and OverallTeam. 2008 was the first year to also feature an individual championship given to one Equitationon the Flat, Equitation over Fences, Horsemanship and Reining rider. The Championships feature12 Hunter Seat and 12 Western teams, though a school must have both disciplines represented tobe considered for Overall Team Champion. Teams are invited and ranked by a selection committeethat chooses the teams based on strength of competition schedule and record throughout the reg-ular season. Based on rankings assigned by the selection committee, teams are placed in brack-ets to compete tournament style in four rounds of competition, until the champions are crowned.

The 2010 Varsity Equestrian National Championships will return for the fourth year to the ExtracoEvents Center in Waco, Texas, where Baylor University serves as the host school. Kansas State hascompeted in every Championship since they first began, and have seen its share of success thereas well. The Western squad has had a top-five finish in each of the last three years. K-State’s high-est finish on the Western side came in 2010 with the VENC Reserve National Championship to goalong with the 2008 third place finish, while the Hunter Seat team placed third in 2007.

RECRUITING INFORMATIONAs an NCAA sport, there are various rules and regulations that must be followed in the recruitingprocess for all varsity sports, including equestrian. The rules are universal for all NCAA teams. Asthe information can be confusing, please don’t hesitate to contact a coach if you have any questions.

To start, any prospective athlete who wishes to compete for any NCAA Division I or II equestrian teammust register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse is a process by which the NCAA canverify that you are still an amateur and eligible to compete in collegiate athletics. Information con-cerning the Clearinghouse and what documents need to be submitted can be found by visiting ncaa-clearinghouse.net.

When getting in touch with a coach, be aware that coaches may receive telephone calls fromprospective athletes at any time. However, coaches are not able to return phone calls to prospectsprior to July 1st of their senior year in high school. Once a coach is able to contact you by phone, there are still restrictions concerning the number of times they can call you. Coaches are, however, able to send out written information, including e-mail, to prospects beginning September 1st of theirjunior year of high school.

Before deciding on a school, it is important to visit the institution and their coaching staff to deter-mine if it’s the right fit for you. Official visits, which are financed in whole by a university, cannottake place prior to the prospect’s first day of class of their senior year. An unofficial visit, made atthe expense of the prospect, can occur prior to the senior year. However, no visits can occur dur-ing a dead period, which is a period designated by the NCAA that prohibits any recruiting contacts, evaluations, or visits by prospects to the institution’s campus. If you are interested in being a partof the Kansas State Wildcat Equestrian team, please contact the coaching staff to set up a visit assoon as possible. For the most up-to-date information on how to be considered for the Wildcatequestrian team, visit www.k-statesports.com.

6 KANSAS STATE EQUESTRIAN

The 2010-11 Kansas State Equestrian team enters this sea-son looking to build upon the unprecedented success of its West-ern squad last year. They wrapped up last season by finishing inthe Top-10 nationally and taking home the VENC Western ReserveNational Championship in Waco, Texas, marking the best finishin school history.

“It was an awesome year ending as Reserve National Champi-ons,” said head coach Casie Lisabeth. “We had a team that hada lot of seniority and a lot of experience, both before they came tocollege and while they were here.”

Despite a majority of the riders from the Reserve National Cham-pionship team graduating, Lisabeth has two student-athletes thatshe expects to be the foundation for this season's team in West-ern rider Alecia Zimbelman and Hunter Seat rider Jen Rawle.

Zimbelman, a senior from St. Francis, Kan., has been a part ofthe varsity program for three years and has had great success forthe Wildcats, winning numerous match-MVP awards and tallyingan overall record of 26-21-2 in her time as a Wildcat.

“Alecia is really, really talented, and I am glad that this is going tobe her year,” Lisabeth said. “She waited patiently behind lastyear’s senior class a little bit and she let them have their mo-ment. So I am glad that she gets to step up there and be a team-leader.”

Rawle, a Hunter seat rider, has two years of varsity experienceunder her belt and her coaches and teammates have taken noticeto what she brings to the table. This season, she was voted ateam captain for the second year in a row. A native of Katy, Texas,Rawle is the rider that the Wildcat coaching staff is looking at tolead by example.

“Jen is going to be a great one to look for,” Lisabeth said. “Shehas got a ton of experience and she is a great leader for the team.

I hate to put the pressure on one individual to be a leader in thearena because we really want all of them to step up and be there, but we think Jen is someone who can get it done.”

While last season's Hunter Seat squad showed flashes of suc-cess throughout the year, 2010-11 looks to be a clean slate witha mix of returning riders and a large, talented class of incomingfreshmen. A total of 24 newcomers will be joining the 28 return-ing riders for the Wildcats and Lisabeth and her staff could not bemore excited in trying to figure out how these fresh faces will blendin with the rest of the team.

“We have a very talented freshman class,” Lisabeth said. “Weare just starting to figure out their riding style but we know theirresumes, we have seen them compete on their own horses and weknow that they have been very, very successful in the past. We areanxious to see how they step into this different format. We look for-ward to seeing how they will handle getting on a different horse inpractice everyday, as well as to drawing a random horse at com-petitions. Overall, their attitude and work ethic has been great.”

Even though a large part of the 2009-10 team was lost to gradu-ation, one of the top riders from a year ago returns to help lead theWildcats into a new era. Former team captain and three-time let-terwinner Tara Hallan returns to the program as an assistantWestern coach.

“Coach Hallan would not be here if she was not super-talented.She was the best of her class when she was here at K-State,”said Lisabeth. “When she was on the team, she was a team cap-tain and she had a great work ethic and she fully expects thatfrom the team now.”

Another fresh addition to the squad is a new home at Timber CreekStables. This facility, located just east of Manhattan, features 18stalls, 22 runs, plenty of pasture space, both an Indoor and Out-door arena, 2 round pens, and numerous other projects in the

works for the 2010-11 season. Timber Creek will be the site of allhome matches, as well as practices for the Wildcats.

Even though they have only been there a few months, Lisabethcould not be happier about the teams’ new digs and the advan-tages it gives not only the riders, but also the horses.

“We love it,” Lisabeth said. “I cannot rave enough how we love it.The two biggest advantages are that we have gotten to expandour practice schedule since we can be out there whenever wewant, as well as expanding our horse herd since we have moreroom. More horses will be great because we are not going to haveto ride our horses as much and will help keep them happier in theprogram.”

“We just love the atmosphere out there. We have our own placeand it is great to have someone live on-site and can make surethings are going well 24 hours a day. Our barn manager, JimPringle, is outstanding. The girls love that it is a little closer tocampus and it helps them commute. Hopefully we will attractmore spectators for home shows since we are now more visible.”

With the program reaching new heights last year, Lisabeth andthe Wildcats do not plan on counting this season as a rebuildingyear. With a schedule that Lisabeth describes as “really hard butreally fun”, the 2010-11 season looks to be one that Wildcat fansdo not want to miss.

Casie Lisabeth enters her second season as K-State head equestrian coach, after she took fullreigns of the program in 2009-10 following her promotion to head coach during the summer of2009, after two seasons as co-head coach.

In Lisabeth’s first full season, she guided the program to a national runner-up finish at the2010 VENC and has placed K-State riders among the top five Western teams in the nation ineach of the last four seasons.

During the 2008-09 season, she led the Western squad to a fifth place national finish at the2009 VENC and a 10-6-2 record on the year. She also tutored Alyssa Freeman, who becamethe first Wildcat in school history to compete at the VENC as an individual.

Also in 2008, each rider that competed in the varsity horsemanship or reining earned a "MostValuable Player" award. Each show, the judge gives an MVP award to whatever rider he or shethinks rode the best, regardless of whether her score was the highest of the day or not.

The end of Lisabeth's second season at K-State was highlighted by the selection of MorganCampbell to compete at the prestigious Collegiate Reining Invitational held at the 2008 NRHADerby. Only four riders from all of the varsity equestrian programs nationwide are chosen eachyear to compete. Campbell was the second rider tutored by Lisabeth to be selected for the In-vitational; former Wildcat Sara Weller participated in 2007.

Prior to coming to Kansas State as an assistant coach in 2006, Lisabeth served as a studentcoach at Texas A&M University, where she assisted with an Aggie squad that placed third na-tionally in Western at both the Varsity Equestrian and IHSA National Championships. As a four-year member of the Aggie equestrian team, she was the Reserve High Point Regional Rider ofthe Year in 2005 and also had two top-four finished at the Varsity Equestrian National Cham-pionships as a senior. HISTORY AND LOCATIONFounded on Feb. 16, 1863, Kansas State University is the oldest public in-

stitution of higher education in Kansas and one of the first land-grant uni-versities. It was located on the grounds of the old Bluemont Central College, which was chartered in 1858. The university moved to its present site in1875.

Throughout its history, K-State's mission has been rooted in the principlesset forth in the Morrill Act -- to provide teaching, research and service to thecitizens of Kansas and beyond.

The 644-acre wooded main campus with historic limestone buildings islocated in northern Manhattan (population of 50,000) and is convenient toboth business and residential districts. It is located 125 miles west of KansasCity in the rolling Flint Hill of northeast Kansas. The university also has acampus in Salina, Kan., and another coming soon in Olathe, Kan., along withnumerous extension fields, offices and other facilities in Kansas and Ne-braska. The K-State Salina campus offers bachelor's and associate degreesin aviation and engineering technologies.

Located in the rolling hills of Kansas and edging the Kansas River, Manhattan is home to ex-hilarating Big 12 sports, excellent restaurants, extraordinary outdoor recreation, exciting historyand exceptional shopping. With an inspiring view of the prairie, Manhattan’s natural landscapeintroduces the visitor to the magnificence of the Flint Hills, so named for their numerous bandsof limestone and flint. The city was founded in the first days of Kansas settlement and currentlyhas a population of 50,000 in the city and 100,000 in the immediate region. It is a modern, pro-gressive city that is home to not only one of the nation’s top universities, but also the Fort RileyMilitary post and successful corporate citizens.

A student-athlete’s life involves more than academics and athletics. Like most college stu-dents, student-athletes need to relax and have a good time, and Manhattan is the place to dojust that. The city reflects the joys and opportunities of big-city living while retaining a friendly, open atmosphere. The town has many appealing places to shop, eat and socialize. An award-winning shopping mall is located in the heart of the downtown region, and Aggieville – a dis-trict of shops and restaurants just beyond the southern border of the campus – continues tobe particularly popular with students. There are several beautiful parks and walkways through-out the city, while picturesque Tuttle Creek Reservoir, the state’s second-largest body of water, sits just five miles from campus for seasonal swimming, water skiing and boating. The lake areaoffers 12,000 acres of water with 100 miles of irregular, wooded shoreline. Additionally, the12,528-seat Bramlage Coliseum have become a favorite stop for major concerts throughout theyear, including most recent performances by Sara Evans, Ben Folds and Will Ferrell.

Today, Manhattan residents take pride in the local history. The community is especiallyproud of its nickname, “The Little Apple”- symbolic of a polished, wholesome MidwesternManhattan, founded by pioneers who foresaw great things for this part of the U.S.

NICKNAMEThrough its first 19 seasons of athletic competition, Kansas

State had used “Aggies” as its nickname. But prior to the 1915season, new coach John “Chief” Bender gave his squad thenickname “Wildcats.” The moniker lasted the one season Bender coached at K-State. In 1920 new coach, Charles Bach-man, took over the program, renaming the team “Wildcats.” Thistime, the nickname stuck.

WILLIE WILDCATWillie, a student bedecked in a oversized Wildcat head, is

Kansas State’s No. 1 fan. Willie Wildcats are selected yearly by apanel appointed by the cheerleading coach. The mascot is a cen-tral part of athletic contests, but also attends functions aroundthe state as an ambassador. Traditionally, the identity of the stu-dent portraying Willie is kept secret.

TOUCHDOWN I-XIIn 1922, Hall-of-Famer Charles Bachman asked alumni to

consider donating an actual Wildcat to the school to serve as amascot. KSAC alumni Herbert R. Groome and John E. McCoy,both veterinarians in Twin Falls, Idaho, donated “Touchdown I” tothe school shortly after the animal was nursed back to healthunder their care. (He had an encounter with a porcupine, and hisface and throat were punctured by numerous quills. Unfortunately,Touchdown I never fully recovered from its fight, dying of pneu-monia shortly after arriving in Manhattan.) Although the bobcatshave served as K-State’s wildcat mascot since 1922, the animalsno longer attend K-State games. Touchdown XI, the 11th in theline, was kept at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo.

K-STATE COLORSThe school color Royal Purple was adopted in the fall of 1896

by a committee of “Miss Minnie L. Copeland, Jr. and Miss Win-nifred Houghton and Miss Ina E. Holyrod, of the senior class, and perhaps one or more others.” Although K-State’s only official color is purple, white has been used as a complimentary color for many years. Silver is also a common sec-ond or third color.

Former basketball coach Cotton Fitzsimmons incorpratedgold during his two-year stint (1968-70), but gold or yellow hasnot been used since that time. The term “Purple Pride,” which isused in association with K-State athletics, was given rise duringthe tenure of football coach Vince Gibson (1967-74).

POWERCAT LOGOOne of the most recognizable

athletic logos in the nation is the K-State Powercat. The logo was introduced by head football coachBill Snyder shortly after his arrivalin Manhattan as the attitude of theentire athletics department as well as the university was chang-ing.

Manhattan native Tom Bookwalter, in cooperation with BillSnyder, created the powerful logo that is a prominent feature onthe football helmet, at Wagner Field, on the back of the Dev Nel-son Pressbox, clothing, flags, bottled water, vanity plates for carsand just about anywhere in Manhattan.

Previous logos used by the athletics department included aline drawing of a wildcat head and the cartoonish “Willie the Wild-cat” that is used only by the Alumni Association.

SCHOOL SONGSThe Alma Mater was selected as a result of a 1903 campus

contest. H.W. Jones (’88) was responsible for K-State’s prizedresult. Jones’ original work was four stanzas including the chorus. His version has been slightly altered over the years to in-clude just two stanzas and the changing of the words from KansasState Agricultural College to Kansas State University.

Alma Mater“I know a spot that I love full well, ’Tis not in forest nor yet in dell, ever it holds me with magic

spell, I think of thee Alma Mater.“KSU, we’ll carry the banner high, KSU long, long may thy col-

ors fly. Loyal to thee thy children shall swell the cry.“Hail, Hail, Hail Alma Mater.”

Wildcat Victory“Fight you K-State Wildcats. For Alma Mater fight-fight-fight.“Glory in the combat for the purple and white. Faithful to our colors, we shall ever be, fighting ever fighting for

a Wildcat Victory!”

Wabash CannonballEveryone knows that familiar tune Wabash Cannonball. In fact,

Wabash and K-State are almost synonymous. In the fall of 1969the music department burnt down. Every piece of music in thebuilding was destroyed. The only thing that was salvaged waswhat was in the band director’s brief case: a piece of music titledthe Wabash Cannonball. With an upcoming football game and nomusic, that left only one thing to do. The band played the songloud and often. A song that originally had no connection to K-Statebecame a second fight song.

SLOGANSSeveral chants and slogans are used in association with the

team. “Purple Pride” and “Eat ‘Em Up, Eat ‘Em Up K-S-U” arejust a few. One slogan that has virtually died out is “Every Man AWildcat.” The term was popular in the ’50s, ’60s and early ’70s,and once adorned the front of the Ahearn Field House press box.Since the term referred to only one gender, however, it has faded.Kansas State, itself, is referred to in many different shortened ver-sions. The most popular is “K-State”, which is used by alums, friends and journalists from coast to coast.

JOHN CURRIEDirector of AthleticsWake Forest ’93

There is no question John Currie hitthe ground running in his first year asKansas State’s Director of Athletics.Even as he was being introduced as K-State’s 15th director of athletics on May18, 2009, Currie was beginning the im-plementation of a communications plan in an effort to restore the trust ofall Wildcat fans, consistently emphasizing the importance of transparencyand accountability as the foundation for K-State achieving its vision of amodel intercollegiate athletics program. Over his first 12 months that planincluded over 200 speaking appearances throughout the state and with K-State groups across the nation. Regular online letters and chats, K-State’sfirst-ever Fan Forum conference call, which saw more than 3,000 fans par-ticipate, and more than 100 media interviews and talk show appearancesfurther helped Currie connect with the Wildcat faithful.

Currie arrived in Manhattan June 8, 2009, to officially begin his duties.Just a month later Currie and his staff launched the “K-State Pledge,” a se-ries of financial accountability measures and core values serving as thebase of K-State’s vision of having a model intercollegiate athletics pro-gram. Among those values are five goals: a world-class student-athleteexperience; value to the University, city and state; integrity and transparencyin relation to ethics, finance and NCAA compliance; championship-levelathletic performances; and the best fan experience in the Big 12.

In an effort to create the best fan experience possible, Currie’s staffcreated new ticket initiatives for football that led to the largest home-open-ing crowd in Bill Snyder Family Stadium history on September 5, 2009(50,750). The Wildcats also set new season total and average attendancerecords in baseball in 2010, sold a record number of season tickets for vol-leyball and had the largest average increase in the nation this past seasonin men’s basketball.

Providing K-State student-athletes a world-class experience is also apriority as Currie’s staff initiated new events such as the Powercat ChoiceAwards to showcase K-State’s student-athletes and a special graduationreception and ring ceremony to honor their dedication and hard work onthe field and in the classroom. Kansas State’s student-athletes currentlylead the Big 12 in graduation rate, including the highest football and men’sbasketball rates in the conference.

To help encourage support for the student-athlete experience and K-State’s championship pursuits, K-State’s fundraising efforts were com-pletely overhauled with a new emphasis on personal interaction andcommunication for Ahearn Fund donors of all levels. K-State’s supportersresponded by increasing total annual fund cash gifts in Currie’s first yearby over 35% versus the previous year, to an all-time high of approximately$13.5 million.

Currie also worked to establish relationships and communication acrosscampus, through steps such as personally visiting with K-State deans intheir respective offices. He also serves as a member of President KirkSchulz’s cabinet and has made presentations and held question and answersessions with many campus organizations. Student leaders have alreadyrecognized Currie’s commitment to campus by inducting him into the Orderof Omega honor society.

Understanding the importance of coaching continuity in building suc-cessful programs upon arriving in Manhattan, Currie immediately signed2009 Big 12 Baseball Coach of the Year Brad Hill to a contract extension, completed a five-year contract for legendary returning football coach BillSnyder and inked head women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson to a con-tract extension. Then on March 6, 2010, Currie honored the dramatic aca-demic and athletic progress of the men’s basketball program by announcinga new five-year contract for 2010 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Coach of theYear Frank Martin.

Currently a member of the NCAA Division I Administrative Cabinet, Cur-rie also serves the Big 12 as a member of the Game Management/Offici-ating Sub-committee. K-State President Kirk Schulz and Currie’sinvolvement to help secure the future of the Big 12 Conference and KansasState’s position as a long-term league member was pivotal not only forWildcat student-athletes and their college experience but also for the his-tory of the university.

He began his professional career at Wake Forest in 1993 as a DeaconClub intern before being named Assistant Deacon Club Director in 1994, aposition he held until 1997. Currie earned his master’s in sports manage-ment from Tennessee in 2003 and is a 1993 Wake Forest graduate. He andhis wife Mary Lawrence, have three children, Jack, Virginia and Mary-Dell..

32 KANSAS STATE EQUESTRIAN

Key PointsA ‘representative’ of Kansas State’s athletic interests is: an

individual who is known (or who should have been known) by amember of K-State’s executive or athletics administration to:A) have participated in or to be a member of an agency or or-ganization promoting KSU athletics.B) have made financial contributions to the athletic departmentor to an athletic booster organization of K-State.C) have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’sathletic program.D) bought or received tickets to a K-State athletics event.

Once an individual is identified as an ‘athletic representa-tive,’ the person retains that identity forever.

Key Rule: NCAA BYLAW 13.01.5In Division I, representatives of athletics interest are prohibitedfrom making in-person, on-or-off campus recruiting contacts, written, telephonic communications or e-mail transactions witha prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians.

Interpretations1. A representative of a Division I institution is prohibited frommaking in-person recruiting contact with a prospect and his orher parents/guardian on or off campus.Limited Exception: You may have contact with a prospect re-garding permissible pre-enrollment activities such as summeremployment, provided the prospect has already signed a Na-tional Letter of Intent and K-State is aware that you are makingthese contacts in regard to employment.

2. A Division I representative is prohibited from writing or tele-phoning a prospect and his or her parents or legal guardians.Limited Exception: You may have a phone conversation with aprospect only if the prospect initiates the call. Such a call maynot be prearranged by a K-State staff member and you are notpermitted to have a recruiting conversation, but may exhibit nor-mal civility. You must refer any questions about the University’sathletic program to the athletic department.

3. A representative is prohibited from contacting a prospect’scoach, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate theprospect. Limited Exception: NCAA rules do not preclude you from view-ing a prospect’s contest on your own initiative, but you may notcontact the prospect, pick up game films or transcripts.

What can I do?If you know of a high school or junior college student-athletewho might want to attend K-State, the only permissible activityfor a representative is to call the appropriate K-State coach.

What is an “Extra Benefit?”An extra benefit would include provision of any transportation, meals, clothes, entertainment, preferential loan terms, wagesnot commensurate with duties, or other benefits offered to aprospect or current student-athlete which is unavailable to thegeneral student population.

What can you do with prospects?DO feel free to attend high school and junior college athletic

events. You simply cannot have any contact with the prospec-tive student-athletes or relatives. Should you find yourselfseated next to parents of a prospect, DO NOT initiate conversa-tion with the relatives. If conversation is initiated with you, re-spond in a civil manner, but DO NOT discuss K-State’s athleticprogram with them. If they raise questions about athletics, re-mind them that the NCAA prohibits you from discussing athlet-ics with them. Direct their questions to the athletic department. You MAY discuss the University in general, and its academicprograms.

DO continue established family relationships with friendsand neighbors. Contacts with sons and daughters of those fam-ilies are permitted as long as they are not made for recruitingpurposes and are not prompted by Wildcat coaching staff mem-bers. You ARE permitted to play ‘pick up’ games, continueneighborhood picnics or backyard barbecues and engage in yournormal activities with prospects and their parents who are fam-ily friends.

DO feel free to attend a public event (i.e. awards dinner) atwhich prospects are in attendance. NO attempt should be madeto contact or recruit the prospect at these events.

What can I do for current K-State athletes?DO feel free to invite a student-athlete to your home for an

occasional meal, but you must first contact the coach in thesport in which the student-athlete is a participant. Remember, the student-athlete must provide his or her own transportation. You may do this a maximum of one time per school term perathlete.

DO feel free to invite a team for dinner or to meet with agroup of alumni in a city where they are competing. The NCAApermits student-athletes AS A TEAM to receive special bene-fits not permitted as individuals. Arrangements for such eventsmust be made in advance with the head coach or appropriateathletic staff member.

How can I assist with summer employment?DO pay student-athletes employed by you for work actually

performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate forsimilar services in the community and your business.

DO notify the head coaches or the athletic department of jobpossibilities for student-athletes.Other questions and answers:Q. May I accompany the coach during a ‘home’ visit with theprospect?A. NoQ. May I drive a prospect to a secondary school’s reception inmy local area?A. No, unless such arrangements are made for all students inattendance.Q. May a booster group finance a season-ending banquet? Mayit purchase any awards for the team?A. Yes, provided all funds are expended through the athletic de-partment. Since the NCAA has established a value limit onawards received by student-athletes, it is important to have allawards approved by the athletic department.

Additional reminders:1. Please contact the athletics department for NCAA rules in-terpretations.2. Remember that in most cases CONTACT is prohibited.3. Questions: 785. 532.6910. Ask for Kristin Waller.
