Letter From the President

The seemingly constant flow of media stories on hazing in 2014 highlighted the importance of the work of HazingPrevention.OrgTM

(HPO) as well as other organizations focused on prevention. These incidents further hardened HPO’s resolve to ensure that participants in activities such as athletic teams, bands, fraternities, sororities, and recreational sports teams were educated on hazing and its prevention. The HPO Board, volunteers, committee chairs, staff, and sponsors all played a role in the support and development of current and new initiatives provided by HPO. Guided by the organization’s

strategic plan, and developed and refined by the Board in 2014, the organization has made important strides in its mission to be a catalyst in hazing prevention.

HPO continued its support for its current hazing prevention initiatives while its Programming Committee led the effort to prioritize work on new programming. The Novak Institute continues to be the leading interdisciplinary hazing prevention educational opportunity, and was again at maximum capacity in 2014. The #40Answers Twitter Campaign, developed through a partnership with Sigma Nu Fraternity and used to educate students on hazing and its dangers, saw a 40% increase in Twitter impressions. HPO also continued support for the Innovation in Campus Hazing Prevention and Education Award which was made possible through the generous support of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity.

New achievements in 2014 included the selection of HPO and AliveTek, Inc., by the Florida SUS (State University System) to develop an online hazing prevention education course. HPO developed all content and AliveTek created the platform for delivery. The course is already showing promising results on the benefits of educating students on the dangers of hazing. This customizable course can be used by other states, schools, and organizations, allowing it to reach an even broader audience and provide greater impact in hazing prevention.

The Board recognizes Charles Hall, Executive Director for much of 2014, for his leadership in further strengthening and expanding the operations of HPO. When he chose to step down to focus on other areas of his association management business, the board unanimously endorsed Emily Pualwan as his successor. Emily was the driver behind the Florida online course and is a highly energetic advocate for HPO.

As successful as HPO may have been in developing new initiatives, the true measure of its success will be a further reduction in incidents of hazing. The battle may be long but the Board, volunteers, and sponsors are committed to this work. Thank you to each and every one who has joined with us in this fight.

HazingPrevention.OrgTM (HPO) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2014 Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Award. The award recognizes nominated individuals who stood up to hazing in their organizations and on their campuses, and helped educate others about the dangers of hazing. The 2014 Awards are sponsored by Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

The award is named in honor of Hank Nuwer, a long-time anti-hazing journalist and the author of four books and a blog on the subject. A member of the faculty at Franklin College, Professor Nuwer is a former member of the HPO Board of Directors.

Andrew Jordan FischetteMr. Fischette currently serves as the Associate Director of Education & Growth for the Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) National Fraternity. While an undergraduate, along with fraternity headquarters staff and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas professional staff, Jordan came forward during his own pledging process and stood up to put an end to more than 20 years of very risky hazing behavior that was masked as ‘tradition’.

Hillary HoltMs. Holt is currently a student at the University of Connecticut. After experiencing serious hazing firsthand she knew right away that her life was spared so that she could be the voice for those who have lost their lives. Hillary’s current project is building a nonprofit organization on campus by the name of SHINE- Stop Hazing In Nations Everywhere.

Lianne KowiakMrs. Kowiak dedicates part of her time to hazing prevention after her son Harrison lost his life tragically to hazing in 2008 at the age of 19 when pledging to a fraternity during his sophomore year in college. She believes that if she can make a difference by preventing an individual from being hazed emotionally or physically or worse losing his/her life to something so senseless as hazing, it is time worth spent.

Dr. Paulette WalkerDr. Walker is the 25th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She has demonstrated an uncompromising commitment to the service of the Sorority on the local, regional, and national levels, gaining the respect and admiration of the membership for almost 50 years. Her efforts include an internal appointment of a Hazing Prevention Task force and naming a dedicated Special Advisory committee to evaluate the sorority’s membership intake process.

Thank you Phi Delta Theta Fraternity for sponsoring the 2014 Hank Nuwer Anti-Hazing Hero Awards

HazingPrevention.Org Awards Lehigh University Award For Innovative Campus Hazing Prevention Program

HazingPrevention.OrgTM has awarded the 2014 Award for Innovation in Campus Hazing Prevention and Education to Lehigh University. The prestigious national award was presented to the university at a campus reception on April 23, with representatives of HazingPrevention.Org and Zeta Tau Alpha (the 2014 national sponsor), and leadership of Lehigh University present, and

included a $10,000 grant to further implement a comprehensive campus-wide hazing prevention model-based program.

HazingPrevention.Org established the Award for Innovation in Campus Hazing Prevention and Education with a generous gift from Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for Women and Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation Inc.

The Award process is competitive, with campuses submitting detailed applications about their hazing prevention and education programs which are then reviewed and scored by a panel of judges knowledgeable

about hazing and the prevention model. Lehigh University has been implementing the hazing prevention model since attending a number of anti-hazing conferences, and hosting the 2011 Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention. As part of their application process, Lehigh outlined the strategies and programs they plan to put in place with the grant funds. These include centralizing their online resources for hazing prevention education, ongoing and sustainable trainings for their staff and faculty, an expanded resource center for all student organizations, and creation of program materials and webinars in hazing prevention.

Congratulations to Lehigh University!

The Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention

Our 2014 Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention was held on the campus of the University of Memphis June 2-5, 2014. During our institute, nationally recognized faculty teach a prevention framework based on proven principles that are grounded in research. This four-day, interactive experience teaches diverse groups of interdisciplinary participants how to address hazing from a strategic approach that focuses on prevention rather than just response.

Since 2008, we have brought together dynamic groups of students and professionals and provided them the opportunity to cultivate the skills to develop and implement a comprehensive hazing prevention initiative. Additionally, we aim to instill hope that we have the capacity to prevent hazing. To this end, the Institute focuses on prevention of hazing as opposed to response.

The curriculum is based on a violence prevention framework designed by experts in public health, which includes (1) a set of proven principles and (2) a systematic and strategic planning process. The process includes starting with a clear definition of the problem and its contributing factors (risk and protective factors), articulating what needs to change, looking at research about what works to make that change, creating effective programs and policies that carry out those change goals.

Congratulations on a successful institute and to all the graduates!

New Online Course: Hazing Prevention: It’s Everyone’s Responsibility

AliveTek and HazingPrevention.OrgTM partnered in 2014 to launch a new online hazing prevention course for the Florida SUS (State University System) in the fall of 2014, and roll out a customizable course for organizations and universities nationwide.

Hazing Prevention, It’s Everyone’s ResponsibilityTM is an evidence-based online course, reflecting best practices established by leading academics studying hazing. This one-hour awareness and prevention based course teaches students how to recognize, prevent, and report hazing. The real-life scenarios prepare students, group members, and bystanders to make informed decisions, ultimately empowering them to prevent hazing. Pre and post surveys are an important part of the program, and the aggregate data will be used to further efforts for prevention in the future.

AliveTek and HazingPrevention.Org are working together to make this course available to other colleges and universities, national organizations and sports teams around the country, with fully customizable branding, imagery and data reporting.

New Sign Language Hazing Prevention Video PSA

In 2014 HazingPrevention.OrgTM produced a new video public service announcement (PSA) entitled ‘These Hands Don’t Haze’. Produced with the use of a certified sign language interpreter, the video brought to life a poem written by Cherie Michaud.

Cherie Michaud, a graduate student at the University of the Pacific, serves as the Greek Life Residence Director for Alpha Phi at Pacific. She also serves as the Technology Director for the Southeastern Panhellenic Association, NHPW committee member, and AFA Region 5 MER committee member. Her passion for hazing prevention is driving her work at her current institution and she hopes to pursue a doctoral degree and write her dissertation on women’s hazing issues. Cherie minored in American Sign Language at the University of North Florida. She believes that hazing hurts and prevention efforts should be communicated in more than one language, including ASL. Cherie wrote this ASL poem while interning for HPO.

The video was made possible with generous support of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Through Delta Zeta’s philanthropy of speech and hearing, their chapters support local and national speech and hearing organizations, volunteering many hours and generously fundraising for this cause.

Delta Zeta Sorority was founded at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1902. It was the first sorority to be founded at the university. Today, Delta Zeta has enriched the lives of over 247,000 alumnae and collegiate members in the United States and Canada.
