BUILDING GOODNESS FOUNDATION 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Page 2: 2014 BGF Annual Report

At Building Goodness Foundation, we know that even a small, Virginia-based non-profit can play a critical role in transforming communities. We see it everyday in the homes, clinics, community centers, and schools that our volunteers have built and renovated over the past 15 years. In our own backyard and around the world, these buildings stand as tributes to the hard work and personal commitment of our volunteers. They are evidence of our belief that buildings can change the world.

BGF volunteers are a people who want to go out and build and do good things. In 2014, these skilled volunteers dedicated more than 8,000 hours of their time to working on projects to improve vulnerable communities in Central Virginia and abroad. These projects address issues that affect people’s lives, and in turn, respond to the call issued by the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

As President of the Board of Directors, but also a dedicated volunteer for 12 years, I know that BGF is making a difference. Our work fulfills our mission to build community and improve lives. This is true for our volunteers as well as the people and communities our projects serve. Lasting friendships are formed during builds, transforming the international development to a very human scale. We are privileged to work alongside the very people we are helping, honored to get to know the men and women who will live and work in BGF’s buildings. Seeing the personal impact of BGF’s work is what keeps us going, continuing to work to build more goodness in the world.

Thank you for supporting this work!

J.D. DivenBoard President, 2014-2015

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) is a nonprofit that connects skilled volunteers from the design and construction industries with vulnerable communities at home and abroad. In partnership with best-practice NGOs and nonprofits, we build critically needed schools, clinics, homes, and centers for ecological and economic development.

DOMESTIC PROJECTS

Building Goodness Foundation was created in Central Virginia and continues to operate from our main headquarters in Charlottesville. In 2014, BGF focused our volunteer efforts in this community while simultaneously focusing our staff fund-raising efforts on upcoming international projects that broke ground and will be completed in 2015. Completing 11 projects in Central Virginia, it is not an over-statement to say that 2014 was our biggest year ever for domestic work.

Further, BGF established an affiliate in Boulder, Colorado in 2014. Though much work remains, this new chapter of BGF will harness the power and enthusiasm of our friends in Colorado to work on international projects and spearhead their own domestic projects in 2015.

BGF works in:• Albemarle County• City of Charlottesville• Fluvanna County• King William County• Louisa County• Nelson County

In 2014, BGF sent 19 international trips, with skills provided by 77 volunteers. These volunteers worked on a variety of BGF projects, including two Haiti housing programs which completed more than 150 houses last year alone.

In 2014, BGF coordinated 11 projects in Central Virginia, with skills provided by 193 volunteers. In total, for 36 out of 52 weekends in the year, BGF volunteers worked to make our community stronger and improve the lives of our neighbors.

Building Goodness Foundation prioritizes work that aligns with select Millennium Development Goals. These are the United Nations’ targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions—income, hunger, disease, and lack of shelter—while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. At BGF, we’ve experienced first-hand that a small but determined Virginia non-profit can play a critical role intransforming communities.

HOW WE WORK: PRIORITIES

40 million babies are delivered each year without a skilled medical professional.

Goal: Improve Maternal HealthBGF understands that the health and wellbeing of women has an im-pact on the economy worldwide, especially in developing regions where women often have greater control over household resources. Globally, the maternal mortality ratio has decreased by 45% since 1990, yet 300,000 women still died in 2013 from preventable causes related to pregnancies.

At BGF, we’re working to provide safe and reliable clinics and birthing centers as well as training facilities for attendants. In 2014, BGF planned three new clinics:

• women’s health clinic with Healthy Women Healthy Liberia; • health clinic and birthing center with Family Health Ministries in Haiti; and • community clinic with UVA Nursing Students Without Borders in El Salvador.

Each clinic will open in 2015, allowing for expanded treatment in these rural areas. In the past, BGF also built and improved numerous other medical facilities

that serve women, including a hospital in Siuna, Nicaragua; a community medical clinic in Ft. Liberte, Haiti; and the Mattaponi Medical Center in Central Virginia.

HOW WE WORK: PRIORITIES

Goal: Achieve Universal Primary Education BGF excels in building schools and community centers where educational activities can take place. In 2014, we began plans for a new secondary school at the Robert Ford Haitian Orphanage and School in Grison-Garde, Haiti. In the past, we’ve also worked to build the first-ever high school in

Ixtatan, Guatemala. Closer to home, BGF works with the Barrett Early Learning Center, City Schoolyard Garden, Westminster Child Care Center, ReadyKids, the Music Resource Center, and MACAA to support youth education in Virginia.

Goal: Ensure Environmental SustainabilityBGF values sustainability and limited carbon footprints for our projects. Around the world, approximately 13 million hectares of forest are lost each year. Deforestation decreases biodiversity and access to clean water. In 2014, BGF launched a partnership with the Blue Moon Fund and

Osa Conservation in Costa Rica. We will build a new Green Classroom complex to support conservation education on the Osa Peninsula, one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. BGF’s ongoing Incentive Kay program also works to improve environmental sustainability, building homes as part of the CODEP reforestation program in Haiti. In 2015, BGF will partner with Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary and the Rivanna Trails Foundation to support their environmental efforts in Virginia.

Global carbon dioxide emissions have increased by almost 50% since 1990.

One in four primary school children in developing regions is likely to drop out.

Left: Erosion in Haiti, a result of deforestation; Right: Students at the Robert Ford Haitian Orphanage and School.

Page 8: 2014 BGF Annual Report

Goal: Global Partnership for DevelopmentBGF prioritizes projects that emphasize community development and self-sufficiency. To this end, we work with partners to build infrastructure that:

• meets community needs,• provides job opportunities for indigenous workers, and • stimulates the local economy.

Our materials come from local suppliers whenever possible. By working with and within each community, BGF staff and volunteers build enduring relationships.

BGF also provides sustainable jobs through our ongoing ti kay (kreyòl for “little house”) program in Haiti. Since 2010, we have trained Haitian workers to build these cost-effective homes, designed to international standards.

At the end of 2014, BGF built a total of 450 ti kays. We will complete a total of 600 ti kays by the end of 2015, which will house approximately 3,000.

In developing regions, 22% of people live on less than $1.25 a day.

In Virginia, 1 in 7 children living in below-poverty households. To address these local needs as well, BGF partners on Building Goodness in April and Building Goodness in Autumn build days each year. These programs rally local support to coordinate and provide critically-needed renovations to elderly and low-income homeowners. Without renovations, these families would live in unsafe conditions.

Left: BGF volunteers leaving an in-progress ti kay worksite for the day; Right: One of 450 completed ti kays.

In Virginia, more than 1 in 10 residents live below the federal poverty line.
