15 years in the making: NSWB & BGF in El SalvadorAfter 15 years of planning, BGF’s collaborative project with the University of Virginia’s Nursing Students Without Borders (NSWB) program is complete. Working together, the two organizations planned, raised funds, and paired skilled, volunteer management with a talented local crew to build a new medical clinic for the Red Cross in San Sebastián, El Salvador.

Operating with a project budget of a mere $95,000 to build the clinic, the partners completed construction in May 2015. The new, permanent home of the local Red Cross clinic in San Sebastián now features two private exam rooms, bathrooms, a large reception and training area, an office and pharmacy, kitchen, garden, and...

Double your donation! BGF announces $25,000 matchIn April, more than 150 people gathered at Farmington Country Club to learn what can be done when determined people come together. We heard from a variety of individuals whose lives have been changed by the work our volun-teers do, including Darlene Young, a grandmother struggling to raise her grandchildren while their mother completes her nursing degree from Roanoke College. At the end of the program, guests were invited to join the Builders’ Society by making a three-year pledge of at least $1,000 to support BGF.

Since then, an anonymous donor made a truly outstanding offer to match every new three-year pledge up to $25,000! This means that if you make a pledge of $1,000 per year for the next three years, this year’s portion will be doubled to help communities in need. Thinking about making a pledge? People laughingly share that their favorite benefit to being in the Builders’ Society is that they don’t receive ANY solicitations. Not even at the end of the end of the year. You also get free tickets to BGF events like Battle of the Bands & Rockin’ Auction! Builders’ Society annual pledge levels are $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000. As always, you can designate your pledge to local work or a specific project. To join the Builders’ Society, use the enclosed envelope or contact Allison Scholl at [email protected] or by calling 434-973-0993.

Our place in the worldOn April 22 at 128 Carlton Road in Charlottesville, a group of BGF Board Members, volunteers, donors, and staff gathered for the groundbreaking of a building of our own. This new building will be a home to our volunteers, leadership, and staff; a place where we can confidently continue to build community and improve lives in our town, across the country, and abroad.

Every builder knows it is vital to begin building a foundation with all lines tight, square, and plumb. You have to get it right. During the excitement of laying out the new office foundation, I was talking with BGF Board Member Jack Horn about laser level technology and how it has made building so much easier. Jack said, “But you still need a reference point. You find your place in the world, and then start from there.”

For 15 years, BGF has found its place in the world by building spaces for others. Skilled volunteers travel to local neighbor-hoods as well as developing countries to build spaces where people can heal, learn, explore, and be safe. All of this has been accomplished from our small, rented offices but we now find that we’ve outgrown those.

BGF will never again be burdened with monthly rent or a mortgage payment. In fact, it would cost us $37,000 per year to rent a similar space to the one we’re building. For BGF, annual facility operations will be easily less than half that, thanks to the support of so many. Throughout the planning phases, we’ve worked hard to make sure that BGF’s partners will not be negatively impacted by the construction process. Further, this project will actually create jobs for the local building industry.

Our Carlton office will be a place for volunteers to train, leaders to collaborate, and staff to manage the day-to-day workings of this dynamic organization. In addition, I hope that everyone in our community will come to know it as your place—truly a place where community is built and lives are improved. —Kelly Eplee, Executive Director

Building Goodness in April 2015Although BGF’s Local Projects program has expanded greatly in the past four years, Building Goodness in April (BGiA) has remained very special. Bringing out about 300 volunteers in one day, it remains our largest volunteer project, locally and internationally, and it embodies our core value to provide “a collaborative volunteer experience.” This year, not only did BGF volunteers and Darden students work together to renovate nine homes, but they also spent the day improving Camp Holiday Trails and Barrett Early Learning Center—both ongoing partners with BGF. Within the nine BGiA homes that were selected this year, the scope of work was broad. Walls were painted, windows re-placed, furnaces repaired, trees planted, tree houses built. The list goes on and on. BGiA is not only about this outstanding work but also the impact we have on homeowners, partner organizations, and ourselves.

BGiA is about filling five dumpsters to clear Mary Fitzgerald’s backyard and having her respond that it has become “her new sanctuary.” BGiA is about fixing Darlene Young’s furnace and replacing her roof in order for her to have heat next winter and be able to keep her homeowner’s insurance. BGiA is about building a wheelchair-accessible tree house with glass panels so that campers who cannot see over the railings can see the beautiful landscape at Camp Holiday Trails. Not only did BGiA bring hundreds of volunteers together to support our community, but those volunteers also made a huge impact at every site where they worked.

For more details about BGiA, contact Catalina San Giorgio at [email protected] or by calling 434-973-0993.

Updates from BGF BoulderAs we expand further west, Boulder Director Shari Leach is putting down roots for BGF in Colorado. In addition to securing office space, she’s been hard at work building new rela-tionships with project partners and recruiting volunteers.

One of these volunteers includes Jason Goode, Faurot Construction project manager/principal, who is volunteering his time and expertise to help BGF beautify the Holiday Neighborhood pocket park in Boulder. Already home to a little library, the park is undergoing a transformation to make it more accessible. Neighbors are pro-viding feedback on the design and “completion is not far way,” according to Leach.

Earlier this spring, BGF Boulder worked on another project with members of the Faurot Construction team. Working alongside fire fighters and other volunteers, these BGFers helped paint the new Jamestown Fire Station, which was recently rebuilt after a 2013 flood. Additionally, Leach participated in Wildland Refresher Training with fire fighters from 11 local departments, working to prepare for Colorado wild fire season.

Prior to the completion of the new clinic, the local Red Cross in San Sebastián treated between 100-125 patients per week, accepting everyone regardless of their ability to pay. In the new build-ing, the clinic’s ability to treat patients will be greatly expanded. The new clinic also has an increased ability to store vaccines and other pharmaceutical necessities, and to provide a safe place for those in need of medical help.

The Red Cross unit of San Sebastián is an independent, apolitical organization. Though it is not affiliated with the Inter na-tional Committee of the Red Cross, it provides similar medical training and services to the local community. During the day, Dr. Fernando Cortez, the medical director, provides primary care consultations for upper respiratory infections, diarrhea, and diabetes, among other ailments. In a region where there are only four nurses and midwives per 10,000 people (as compared to 72 in neighboring regions), the impact of Dr. Cortez and his team of volunteer staff is significant.
