Chances are you’ve heard of Google Glass---a wearable device with an optical head-mounted display that allows the user to connect with the Internet---and wondered if it was for you.

But what if you wear prescription glasses?

Google Glass was designed for people who either don’t need correc-tive lenses or they wear contacts. In response to public demand, howev-er, Google Glass now sells eyeglass frames that can be fitted with pre-scription lenses by an eye care pro-vider.

AccuVISION, which has seven Chicago area locations, is a Google Glass preferred eye care provider, meaning the staff has been specially trained and certified to fulfill pre-scription lenses.

Optometrist James Doherty, founder of AccuVISION, said he was reading an article about an eye doc-tor in San Francisco who was certi-fied in Google Glass and decided to do the same at his offices.

“I didn’t do it thinking I’d make a

profit. I wanted our offices to be on the forefront of new technology,” said Doherty. “I thought it’d be fun for our patients.”

Google Glass is controlled through a touchpad on the side that allows us-ers to swipe through a timeline on a screen that is displayed in their field of vision. Hands full? The device re-sponds to voice commands, too.

Nestor Pancardo, manager of Ac-cuVISION’s Round Lake Beach loca-tion, was the first staffer to be trained in Google Glass.

“It’s definitely fun and interest-ing,” said Pancardo, who has used the device to respond to text messag-es, take photos and video, play games, map locations, even follow a recipe while cooking.

As a medical professional, Doherty is exploring ways to use Google Glass in his work. For example, he can read, record and share information on the device while communicating with patients and staff.

The device could also prove useful during examinations, said Doherty.

“If we have a deaf or hard-of-hear-ing patient that we’d have trouble communicating with, they could put

on Google Glass and read what we’re saying. That’s huge.”

There are also zoom apps for Google Glass that could be used by patients to further magnify their vi-sion. Doherty finds it exciting that new apps are being created at a fast pace and new uses are being discov-ered every day.

“I think it’s the wave of the fu-ture.”

The Google Glass Explorer edi-tion, which has an Android operating system and requires a Wi-Fi or Blue-tooth connection, is available to U.S. residents over 18 at the Glass store at www.google.com/glass/start/ for
