Pacific Beach Shore Club“Where Grand Meets the Sand”You can’t drink on the beach anymore, unlessyou want a big, fat ticket. The law, however, doesn’t say you can’t drink near the beach —and that’s what makes Pacific Beach ShoreClub’s locale so convenient. The flat-screen TVsare only feet from the water to boot, as are thegreat happy-hour deals, goldfish races, karaokeon Sunday, Red Bull slushies and tater tots.

Best Overall ServiceNick’s at the Beach This neighborhood restaurant has made a namefor itself by serving the best seafood in a com-fortable, casual environment. It’s also nostranger to press accolades — a local magazineonce rated it the top neighborhood eatery. Thesidewalk café can accommodate up to 20 peo-ple, and the sports bar upstairs touts a largeoutdoor oceanview deck and 29 TVs. But what’son the menu counts, too — like the tortilla-crusted mahi mahi, pastas, dinner salads, sand-wiches and Chilean sea bass, a huge localfavorite. Add the banquet facilities and take-outservice, and you’ve got Nicks, now 14 years onand nothing in its way. Visit Nick’s at the Pier inOcean Beach, too!

JRDN You can actually credit the Tower’s creativewine list to another establishment in the samehotel. It’s JRDN (or “Jordan,” for the puristswho prefer the phonetic pronunciation), a veryhigh-end restaurant that swears by the magic itperforms on beef and other meats. Red winesgo swimmingly with that kind of thing — andthat translates to a comprehensive selection atthe bar (the powers that be didn’t forget thewhites, either). Meanwhile, the bar offers acasual, yet sophisticated experience. The atmo-sphere is warm and inviting and the crowd iship yet mellow — everybody gets to enjoy anocean view while sipping signature cocktailsand nibbling on sushi.

Simple, unpre-tentious foods like grains, pasta andlegumes are enriched by the pungentflavors of garlic, onion, eggplant andartichoke and by the essences of oliveoil, lemons and raisins. Mamma MiaThe left hand definitely knows what the rightone’s doing at this place. The servers’ sugges-tions are spot-on — listen and heed them whenthey recommend Italian staples like lodigianasalad, lasagna and ravioli al casale. You simplycan’t go wrong with those choices. Neither willyou shirk at the sight and smell of the handmadepasta or the idea of exclusively in-house prepara-tion. Sushi OtaThe coolest thing about Sushi Ota isthat it relies on the sushi tradition, notthe trendy fusion concept, to see itthrough. The menu is short becausethe regulars look to the daily specialsposted behind the counter. The chefsturn the day’s catch into artful littlebundles accented with spices. Seafood,teriyaki-glazed meats, feather-lighttempura and a variety of small appetiz-ers dot the rest of the menu. Trader Joe’sIt all started in the 1950s ... Would youbelieve they started out as a small chainof convenience stores? It's true. Wayback in 1958, they were called ProntoMarkets. In 1967, the founder, the origi-nal Trader Joe, changed the name (yes,to Trader Joe's) and the way they dobusiness. Stores got bigger (if you canimagine), decked the walls with cedarplanks and donned their crew in coolHawaiian shirts. Most importantly, theystarted putting innovative, hard-to-find,great-tasting foods in the "Trader Joe's"name. That cut costs and saved youmoney. Still does.
