2014 MASTERCARD MEMORIAL CUP MASTER EVENT SCHEDULE RELEASED

The 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup London Host Committee is excited to announce the entire schedule for the upcoming Championship. Featuring a possible 9 thrilling hockey games, the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup also involves a number of activities off the ice. The 11-day Championship begins with the Arrival of the Memorial Cup Ceremony and the Opening Gala both Presented by BMO. From exciting acts in the Budweiser Beer Garden (beer tent in the South Parking Lot of Budweiser Gardens), to the Downtown London FanFest open daily on Talbot Street and the Covent Garden Market Square, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

There’s a number of special events taking place over the course of the Championship as well. Fans can enjoy a Captains’ Pancake Breakfast, a tour at the Royal Canadian Regiment Museum, a beach event with the Memorial Cup, a celebration at our local legions with the Memorial Cup, the MasterCard Memorial Cup Golf Tournament presented by LIUNA and the CHL Awards Ceremony presented by The London Free Press.

ARRIVAL OF THE CUP CEREMONY PRESENTED BY BMOThe 96th edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup will take place May 16-25, 2014, at Budweiser Gardens and will feature the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as well as the host London Knights. A rolling motorcade will welcome the historic Memorial Cup to the Forest City and kick off the Festivities. The Parade will highlight London’s Military presence and historical landmarks throughout the city. It will also feature the legendary Budweiser Clydesdales, which will cart the Cup from Victoria Park to Fanfest. The Cup will stop at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park, where there will be a memorial service for our fallen soldiers.

The Memorial Cup is one of the most significant sports trophies in Canadian history. It was proposed by Captain James T. Sutherland and donated by the Ontario Hockey League in 1919, to be awarded to the junior hockey champion in Canada. It was dedicated to the memory of OHL hockey players who lost their lives fighting for Canada in World War I but in 2010, the Memorial Cup was rededicated to the memory of all fallen and current Canadian Military Personnel.

DOWNTOWN LONDON FANFESTCelebrating the Ontario Hockey League and Hockey Hall of Fame showcase, the Downtown London FanFest is a perfect way to get ready for game day, and will mirror London’s strong military presence with several military displays. This 11-day celebration is free to the public and runs daily around the Budweiser Gardens and Covent Garden Market Square. Activities will include an interactive PlayStation gaming experience, a CHL creative zone with a theatre-style environment showcasing a video tribute to the Canadian Hockey League as well as an OHL-themed Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit with interactive hockey games for all to enjoy. 2014 MASTERCARD MEMORIAL CUP OPENING GALA PRESENTED BY BMOCelebrate the MasterCard Memorial Cup’s arrival in London with an evening of great food and entertainment at the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup Opening Gala presented by BMO. Emceed by NewsTalk 1290 CJBK’s Mike Stubbs, this evening will feature a delicious three-course plated dinner and musical entertainment provided by It’s a String Thing. You’ll have a chance to bid on one of a kind silent auction items and also be able to meet this year’s players with all four competing teams being formally introduced. Dress is business casual.

Former London Knight and current Toronto Maple Leaf President & Alternate Governor, Brendan Shanahan, will be the keynote speaker for the Opening Gala presented by BMO. 2014 CHL AWARDS PRESENTED BY THE LONDON FREE PRESSThe CHL Awards presented by The London Free Press will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at The Grand Theatre in downtown London. Recognizing the year’s top performers in each of the CHL’s three leagues, the CHL Awards presentation is an annual event that is rich in history and features an autograph session by the nominees followed by a formal awards presentation.
