Discovery Trail (Easy) / Jim Creek Trail (Moderate)Length: 1.5 miles round trip / 3.5 miles one way | Elevation: Trailhead 9,220’ / 1225’ gainTrailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow highway 40 south toward Winter Park Resort. Turn left at the 3rd stop light and park at the Bonfils Stanton Outdoor Center directly across from Winter Park Resort entrance. The first section of this hike is the 1.5 mile boardwalk loop Discovery trail. To access the Jim Creek trail, follow the Discovery trail to the right. When the boardwalk ends, make a sharp left. Cross FDR 128 and keep Jim Creek on the left. Trail Description: The Discovery trail is handicap accessible, perfect for a family picnic, and a great setting to spot wildlife. The Jim Creek Trail continues beyond the boardwalk and is slightly more strenuous. The Jim Creek trail ends at a large meadow with an amazing view of James Peak. This trail is a great hike in the fall with views of the changing aspen.

Fraser River Trail – South (Easy)Length: 2.5 miles one way | Elevation: 8280’Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow the sidewalk south toward Winter Park Re-sort. At Beaver Village Lodge the paved trail will parallel the road until it reaches Idlewild Campground. Trail Description: The trail continues to follow the Fraser River through the forest. The trail passes under High-way 40 and continue along the river until it reaches Winter Park Drive. Take a left to visit Winter Park Resort or return back the way you came. This trail is very scenic along the river with a slight incline towards the ski resort.

Second Creek / Broome Hut (Easy)Length: 1 mile one way | Elevation: Trailhead 10,569’ / Hut 11,350’Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow highway 40 south and up the eastern side of Berthoud Pass. A turnout at mile marker 240 along with a large orange avalanche warning sign marks the trailhead.Trail Description: Begin along the main trail following the creek. Stay on the main trail until the cirque and eventually the hut become visible. The Second Creek trail is popular year-round. Views at the top include James Peak, Parry Peak and the Continental Divide.

Adams Falls East Inlet Trail (Easy)Length: .5 miles one way to the falls, 1 mile one way to the glaciated valley | Elevation: Trailhead 8,400’ / Falls 8,480’Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center follow highway 40 through Winter Park towards Granby. Turn right onto highway 34 toward Grand Lake. Continue on for 16 miles into the town of Grand Lake. At the Mountain Food Market, veer left and continue for 2 miles to the end of the road where the trailhead is located. Trail Description: The falls are beautiful and easily accessible for all ages and abilities. Continue past the falls to reach the glaciated valley with incredible views of Mount Baldy. As a side note, because of its location in Rocky Mountain National Park dogs are not allowed on the trail.

Creekside / Flume Loop (Easy)Length: 5 miles round tripTrailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow highway 40 north to the Fraser Valley Center (the Alco shopping plaza) traffic light and turn left onto CR 72. Turn right on CR 721 (Fraser Parkway) and follow to the “T” intersection. Turn left onto CR 73. Continue past the St. Louis Creek campground and Park.Trail Description: This local’s favorite loop hike follows the creek and has a number of wildlife viewing opportu-nities.

FEATURED HIKESMonarch Lake (Easy)Length: 4.1 miles round trip | Elevation: Trailhead 8,345’ / Highest Point 8,459’Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center follow highway 40 through Winter Park towards Granby. Turn right onto highway 34 toward Grand Lake. Between mile marker 5 and 6, turn right onto CR 6 (FDR 125). Follow this road for 10 miles to the Monarch Lake parking area. Trail Information: An Arapaho National Recreation Area day pass is required for this hike. The trail begins at an old cabin which is staffed in the summer. The trail then loops around the lake making it a popular destina-tion year round. Keep your eyes open for moose!

Columbine Lake (Moderate) Length: 3.4 miles one way | Elevation: Trailhead 10,052’ / Lake 11,045’ Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow highway 40 through Winter Park towards Fraser, and turn right onto CR 83. At the fork in the road, turn left onto CR 84. Follow this road for 10.5 miles, and turn left into the Junco Lake parking lot. This is the Columbine Lake trailhead.Trail Information: An Arapaho National Recreation Area day pass is required for this popular day hike. The trail follows an old jeep road until it reaches the junction with the Caribou Pass trail at 1.7 miles. As the Caribou trail splits away, stay to the right to remain on the Columbine Lake trail. The trail continues along the creek to its source at Columbine Lake. This tree-lined lake is nestled in a steep basin on the northwest face of Mount Neva. Please note: dogs must be leashed within the Indian Peaks Wilderness area.

Byer’s Peak (Difficult)Length: 4.3 miles one way | Elevation: Trailhead 10,545’ / Peak 12,804’Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Information Center, follow highway 40 north to the Fraser Valley Center (the Alco shopping plaza) traffic light and turn left onto CR 72. Turn right on CR 721 (Fraser Parkway) and follow to the “T” intersection. Turn left onto CR 73. Continue past the St. Louis Creek campground and the Byers Peak campground. Follow the directional signs to the Byer’s Peak hike and park at the gate. Trail Description: Begin to hike along the Byer’s Peak road 1.8 miles to the trailhead. The trail then begins to increase in elevation and difficulty through the forest. At timberline, begin to ascend the ridge of several false peaks. A short section below the summit requires a bit of a scramble. The summit brings 360 degree views of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Continental Divide and the Gore Range.

Devil’s Thumb (Difficult) Length: 3.9 miles one way | Elevation: Trailhead 9609’ / Summit 12,236’Trailhead Location: From the Winter Park Visitor Center, follow highway 40 north to Fraser. Just beyond the Fraser Post Office, turn right (east) onto CR 8. After approximately 6 miles, the road becomes FDR 128. Continue on FDR 128 to the left (north). Follow the directional sign for the Devil’s Thumb trailhead, turn right and park at the trailhead. Trail Description: Begin on the trail walking through the forest and past a meadow. The meadow is approxi-mately 1.5 miles from the trailhead, making this portion of the hike easy for the family. After the meadow, the trail forks into the High Lonesome trail to the left and the Devil’s Thumb trail to the right. The hike continues to increase in elevation and difficulty. Above timberline, follow the path along the tundra until the Devil’s Thumb rock becomes visible again. Don’t forget your camera for photo opportunities of Tabernash, Devil’s Thumb Lake, Winter Park Ski Resort and the Continental Divide.
