Chris HudsonPresident, Dallas Safari Club

Letter from the PRESIDENT

STRONG AND PROUDBy Chris Hudson

HIGHLIGHTS in this issue

Much has been said over the years in these pages about how much Dallas Safari Club means to its

members. I’m not sure it is possible to overstate the significance that DSC has for many of us. Perhaps we may run out of superlatives at some point. But all of this enthusiasm is testimony to the fact that DSC members are very proud of their organization.

There is strength in our numbers as well. It would seem that any time DSC sends out a call, people answer it. Attendance at meetings, activities, events, planning sessions is up, showing growth in numbers and interest. Memberships are up, including recent additions from India, China and United Arab Emirates. Forty-nine of 50 states are represented, as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Of 13 Canadian provinces, we have members from 10 of them. (Come on, Vermont, join us! You too, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island!)

With increased numbers comes increased responsibility to be the best we can be. Every one of us is a representative of DSC wherever we may go, and the world is watching. At a convenience store on my way back from the Big Bore Shoot in May, a customer saw the logo on my shirt and asked, “Oh, is there a zoo nearby?” I replied, “Yes, Dallas has a zoo, but Dallas Safari Club is a conservation organization, run and funded by hunters.” She was pleasant and maybe only mildly interested, but she has heard of DSC now. One can only hope it was a lasting impression, and when DSC is in the news again, that woman will remember there is a face behind the name, and a friendly one at that.

In fact, there are now over 5,000 faces behind the name. (Pages 29–33 list all the new members who joined in January.) Every one of you is a representative of the club, and as your president, it is my hope that we all share the pride and strength. Let me know what I can do to help you, to improve the club, and to continue the tradition that DSC has established as a leader in conservation, education and hunter advocacy.

(In May, I began my letter with a quote. Did any of you recognize it? First one to get it right gets bragging rights!)

BIG BORE BLAST

The 7th Annual Big Bore Shoot took place in May on a beautiful Saturday morning at Trinity Outfitters, Ennis, Texas.

In a fun and friendly atmosphere, shooters can work on their technique and challenge themselves. Krieghoff and Alamo Sporting Arms, the sponsor for the event, provide some rifles for testing. Hornady provided ammo for the shoot.

Around 40 shooters and observers gathered to shoot .375, .470, even .500 caliber rifles at dangerous game targets, both stationary and moving. Scores were tallied up for brain shots and heart shots. While the wind blew around 10-15 mph, the big rounds flew hot, fast, and true.

One shooter said, “There are a handful of guys out here who are all first-class shooters, so the competition is stiff. But sometimes, it’s just not your day.”

In the end, there was a four-way shootout at the moving target between David Hood, Karl Evans, Rod Wooley and Kelly Clark. Clark came out on top.

Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all who participated. See you next year for the 8th annual shoot? CT

By Alan Vogel, DSC Life Member

This story really started three years ago. I wrote the story for Camp Talk called “San Jacinto Day Turkey.” It was the first time Sharon and I had hunted

together, and we had a great time. I killed a nice tom on San Jacinto Day, and I told Sharon on the way home that next year was her year to be the shooter, and I would do the calling.

The following year, we went up to the Panhandle and hunted the same property. We saw more turkeys but not very many toms. The last day of our hunt, we had a nice tom come in, and Sharon shot twice − at the same bird. On the first shot, that turkey just walked about 10 yards away, and Sharon shot again. She must have been closer that time because he finally flew away. Turkey 2, Team Vogel 0.

This season, we changed locations to South Texas − the Medina Ranch in Medina, Texas. Yes sir, we moved about 800 miles south so that we would not be hunting that same turkey. Don’t ask me for the reasoning behind that − it is just what we did.

The season in South Texas opened March 15. We met our guide Gary and followed him to the Medina Ranch. He took us to a blind that backed up to the Medina River where a lot of the birds roost. We got there a little late but that didn’t seem to matter. We set out three decoys − two hens and a jake − and got settled in the blind. I started yelping on my diaphragm call, and three toms answered almost immediately. They seemed very content to stay where they were though. About 9:30, eight hens came into the decoys. They called a couple of times to the decoys and went to a feeder about 80 yards away. They fed around for a long time, and one of the old hens gave us a concert. She yelped, purred, and made little popping sounds for about 10 minutes. I told Sharon that we had our own calling expert, so get ready! The concert she gave was worth the trip as I really perfected my calling by listening to her.

We did not get a tom to come in that morning. When Gary came to pick us up, I told him we wanted to hunt the same blind that afternoon. We got back into the blind a little earlier that afternoon and set the decoys a little farther away. We got settled, and I started calling. Once again, we got responses immediately. We had a couple of hens come in that stood around the decoys, talked to them and then moved off. About 7 p.m., over by the boundary fence was a real nice tom walking down the

fence line toward the river. I started calling him, and he turned and started walking back up the fence line. I called again; he turned and started back down the fence line. This went on for it seems like hours; he never gobbled and never left the fence. I finally got tired of this and started glassing the area.

To the right, we had been hearing a tom gobble. He would seem to get closer and then farther away. The road we came in on to the blind paralleled the river. I made another sweep from left to right and there, standing on the road about 300 yards, was this tom! I called a couple of times, and he started toward us. He was making a big circle toward us and every time I called, he would stop and gobble back. This went on until Tom got within about 60 yards. Then he turned and walked to the feeder.

Sharon whispered, “He is getting away!” He walked to the feeder and started feeding. I told her then he was just having dinner and then he would get romantic! He finally finished eating and turned toward the decoys. I was making little yelps and that little popping sound that I had learned that morning. I had marked a log about 40 yards out from the decoys. Sharon had been ready since we first saw the tom, and I told her that when I said take him put the bead on his head and shoot. The tom walked to just inside the log and then started to move to our left. With the decoy jake pointing toward us at about 20 yards, he was circling to get in front of him. When he got to about 35 yds., I told Sharon to shoot. The tom flipped over and was down. Hooray! Sharon was on the scoreboard!

The tom had a 10-1/4 beard, 1-inch spurs and weighed 28 pounds. By NWTF records, he scored 71. That would have put him at No. 5 for the Rio Grande. But we weighed him on a scale at the cleaning shed and found out later that he had to be weighed on scales certified by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Still, he was a great trophy, and I am so proud that I was a part of it. Sharon has become an expert on turkey hunting! She even asked where and when she could get her Grand Slam. I have created a turkey hunting monster, and I love it. CT

hit with it piled up quickly as it has provided great penetration, and so far, we have never recovered one.

All Mag Tips are of the Semi-Pointed profile, and the ballistic coefficient is not very high, but they always seem to feed well out of the magazine, and are a fine compromise over a round nose bullet. Those real pointy bullets are great on paper and ballistic charts, but it doesn’t mean all that much in the field.

Speaking of round nose bullets, the Hornady, Sierra, and Remington bullets are some of the best round nose on game you could ask for whether it is whitetails or plains game. The Hornady RN has been legendary since the first ones were ever made circa 1950. Along with the old Remington Core Lokts, most likely more deer have fallen to them than all others combined. The .30-30 Winchester and .35 Remington are notoriously effective with round nose bullets.

The .30-06 Springfield is equally lethal with 180-grain and 220-grain round nose bullets. Remington and Federal still load factory ammo in the .30-06 Springfield with 220-grain bullets so there must be enough demand out there or they would have been discontinued by now.

Back in the early 1990s, I gave a Zimbabwean PH friend of mine a couple boxes of .30 cal. 220-grain Sierra round noses to take home with him. Two years later, I again ran into him and he said that those bullets were the best he had ever used in the .30-06 Springfield. He said game seldom dropped at the shot but usually only ran a few yards and piled up. Rarely did he ever recover a bullet, and meat damage was minimal as the bullet just punched through.

Two of my absolute favorites are the 250-grain Hornady RN in the .358 Winchester or .35 Whelen and the .338 Winchester Magnum. I’ve used those bullets since 1985 with never a complaint.

Another bullet that I have come to really love is the .30 caliber 220-grain Nosler Partition. It is sort of “semi-pointed,” and not really a round nose, but in my .300 Winchester Magnum at about 2,750 fps, it’s been really effective on everything from warthogs and gemsbok to zebra. I’ve also used Hornady round nose bullets in other guns that I have been had to “tame,” and found that if a gun will not shoot them well, they most likely won’t shoot anything else either, and it is time to rebarrel it. FORGOTTEN BULLETSBy Terry Blauwkamp

With all of the hype about polymer-tipped, bonded core, XP-3, and a host of other premium bullets available, some old reliable bullets have been

“forgotten.” One of the oldest around is the Speer Mag Tip. It has been around for many years with no fanfare or big ad campaigns. It has never received the “Bullet of the Year” award or any other prestigious notoriety, yet is a solid performer on game. By “solid performer,” I mean a bullet that can be depended upon to expand reliably, yet hold together with predictable performance. The Speer Mag Tip comes in rather limited calibers and is available only in 150 grain for the .30 caliber and a 350-grain in the .416 cal. Unfortunately, Speer, has chosen to discontinue the Mag Tip in the 7mm bullets, and also discontinued the 180-grain in the 30 caliber.

All Mag Tips have a very small amount of lead exposed at the tip, as this is to prevent nose deformation in the magazine. The jackets are very nicely tapered with a very heavy base, a thin nose, and have internal fluting to promote uniform expansion. They are of a single core construction now (they used to be dual core), and are product of Speer’s “Hot Core” process.

I’ve found the .30 caliber 150-grain Mag Tip to be at its best in the .308 Winchester of all things. Granted it is designed for 3,200 feet per second muzzle velocity in the .300 Magnums, but when it reaches several hundred yards, it is going the same speed as a .308 Winchester or .30-06 Springfield at plus or minus 100 yards, and performs perfectly, driving right through white-tailed deer almost every time. I’ve yet to find a .308 Winchester that did not shoot good groups with them.

The .416 caliber 350-grain Mag Tip has been a gem in .416 Remington and .416 Taylor too. By being 50 grains lighter than the normal 400 grain bullet, its recoil is less and trajectory is flatter. The various elk and plains game

OBITUARY

Rich Roberson, DSC Past President 2001-2002, passed

away on May 5, 2014 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Rich was a partner with Gardere Wynne Sewell for

26 years where he served as the chair of the Bankruptcy

and Business Reorganization Practice Group, and was

a recognized authority in the bankruptcy/business

restructuring field. In just the past 10 years, among

other honors, Rich was recognized in Texas Super

Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America, the Best

Lawyers in Dallas, and D Magazine.

Rich was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and shooting

enthusiast. In recent years, his passion for the shooting

sports steered him to the game of helice shooting −

a challenging form of clay target shooting. He qualified

for and shot on the U.S. team at the World Helice

Championship in Porto, Portugal in July 2013, winning a

bronze medal in his age group. It was certainly one of

his most prized accomplishments.

Rich Roberson, 1954-2014 Rich served on the Board of Directors and as President

of Dallas Safari Club as well as Trustee of the Dallas

Ecological Foundation. The legacy that Rich leaves

behind is that of a true gentleman and friend to anyone

who had the good fortune of knowing him. Rich never

missed an opportunity to laugh and to help others.

Rich is survived by his loving wife Patti Roberson;

SHOOTING SPORTS,

This very popular DSC activity usually runs twice a year. However, due to construction in the spring and weather in the fall, the S.A.F.E.T.Y. Extravaganza was cancelled in

2013. Members were itching to get out to Greystone and greet the 100 student-parent pairs that came for the all-day fun.

From the morning greeting to the round of shooting stations to the Operation Game Thief Wall of Shame to the falconry Q&A, everyone − students, parents and volunteers − enjoyed the fair weather and camaraderie that comes from a day in the field.

Thanks to everyone for their participation. See you next fall! CT

Have you ever considered volunteering at the DSC annual convention? Every year nearly 500 volunteers comprised of DSC members, friends and family come together to create “The Greatest Hunters Convention on the Planet!” There are several areas for volunteers to get involved, and here is just one example. . .

Despite what the other committees may say, Team DSC Store is the end-all of committees. This juggernaut is the pinnacle of convention volunteering and, best of all, it’s the easiest duty. Please keep that under your hat. You simply mill about the store and help our friends and patrons find whatever garment or accessory they may need. Maybe it’s a size or style they are looking for. We are there to help and provide security within the store. The most strenuous thing you would ever do is restock a few items if we run short during any given day. To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever pulled a hamstring, got frost bite or sunburn or wore a callous on their feet while working the store and we aim to keep this record intact.

Almost any two-hour shift you may want is available on any of the four days. We also have a front row seat to who’s in the hall. We see and meet all the celebrities. We chat with them and help them shop. We are really flexible if you need to make a run for something or other during your shift. If you need to trade shifts, we can do that on the fly as well. The true mission of the store is to see to it that every sportsman or sportswoman that goes afield anywhere in the world, does so wearing DSC logo apparel, hats and accessories. We also give every store volunteer a DSC 100 convention year shirt (unless we run out), so volunteer early and often.

Here are the Top 10 reasons for volunteering in the store (in reverse order a la David Letterman):

10. we’re inside 9. we don’t get hot or cold 8. we don’t dodge vehicles (golf carts the exception) 7. it’s easy 6. we shop (before anyone else does) 5. we mill about 4. we chat with friends 3. we hang out with celebrities 2. we people watch 1. we tell tall tales (OK… Charlie tells the tall tales.)

Having fun is required! If you have volunteered for this before, thanks for your service and we hope to see you again at Traditions 2015. If you haven’t volunteered in the store, come see what you’re missing. Join the fun and experience this convention from the front row!

HUNT Report Form

Bringing back an old tradition of Dallas Safari Club, the Hunt Report form has been revised and updated. Hunters can record the details of their hunt − the dates, species seen and taken,

quality of trophies and guides/PHs, quality of accommodations and hospitality. Tuck a few copies into your luggage when you depart for a hunt, or download a digital copy from the website.

Booking agents, travel agents, outfitters and guides: please feel free to duplicate the form for all of your clients, DSC members or not. This tool is a great way to document travel and hunts, and also to promote membership in the club. Member hunt reports will be published in Camp Talk, especially if accompanied by high quality photos. (DSC will review all reports submitted but only publish positive hunt reports.) CT

WILDLIFE AGENCY News

TEXAS GAME WARDEN FIELD NOTES

Compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement reports.

FAKE BUCK NETS REAL CITATIONS

Two San Augustine County game wardens and a Forest Service ranger were using a decoy deer to deter night hunting, when a small car passed their location a couple of times, its occupants observing the decoy. Once the suspects located the "deer" with their headlights, the passenger fired a small caliber rifle at the decoy. The wardens pursued the car and pulled it over. The suspects said they had shot the decoy with a .22 revolver that was stored in the glove box. However, the wardens saw no spent casings in the cylinder. After questioning, the driver admitted that they threw a rifle out of the window before they were stopped. After a quick search, a .22 rifle was found. The suspects were arrested and transported to the San Augustine County Jail. Cases pending.

WISHING FOR MORE

A Williamson County game warden was off duty when he and his family heard a loud noise from outside their home. When he looked outside, he saw a set of vehicle headlights in a creek bed. The warden told his wife to call 911 while he grabbed a flashlight and went to investigate. When he got to the vehicle, a man was climbing out of the passenger's side and a woman was sitting behind the wheel. The warden made sure everyone was okay and the man insisted that police should not be called. When asked why, his response was that he had priors and the woman was only 20 years old. Since these facts were irrelevant to the wreck, the warden asked him what he had inside the vehicle that he didn't want the police to see. When he hesitated, the warden asked him how much marijuana was still in the vehicle since he could smell it. The man said he thought all the weed was gone, but asked the woman if any was left, she said, "I wish." Williamson County deputies arrived and arrested the man for driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.

WARDEN HAS BUSMAN'S HOLIDAY

A Smith County game warden was fishing on the Neches River on his day off, when two people began fishing nearby. Soon after arriving, one of the individuals finished his energy drink and threw the can into the brush. The other caught a fish by snagging it in the back and threw it behind a tree so nobody would see it. The

warden called another warden, who was on duty, to pass on the information. The on-duty

warden arrived and discovered among other violations that neither individual

had a fishing license. Numerous citations were issued. Cases pending.

LOST AND FOUND

An Atascosa County game warden received a call from a person who

saw someone dump a dead feral hog in a ditch on the side of the road. A

witness got the license plate number, so the warden picked up the hog and went to

the suspect's address. When he arrived, the warden showed the man the hog and asked him if

he had "lost" the swine within the hour. The suspect admitted to dumping it and was issued a citation, along with the hog so that he could dispose of it on his own property.

HIDE AND SEEK

A Cherokee County game warden received a call from a landowner who suspected there was a poacher on his property after hearing three gun shots. A short time after the warden arrived, the subject was found in the middle of the property dressed in camouflage and carrying a 17-caliber rim fire rifle. The subject said he was lost, failing to mention that he had to climb an eight-foot high fence to get to where he was apprehended. The subject was also found in possession of drug paraphernalia and was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to jail. Case pending. CT
