Clarks Grove John Mead Clark preferred farming over business, so in 1855, instead of settling in the nearby village of Albert Lea, he made his home on a beautifully landscaped piece of land surrounded by a grove of oak trees with a lake (Geneva Lake) off to the northeast. Everyone within two square miles began referring to the area as Clark’s Grove, as it is known today.

, MN Minnesota’s first cooperative creamery was started in

Clarks Grove on May 5, 1890. This town was historically noted for its cooperative business enterprises. Some other cooperative businesses were the grocery, hardware store and lumber yard.

Clarks Grove is on record as having the largest rural American Baptist Church in the United States. Historically the town has had a large Danish population and this church was a Danish Baptist Church.

It is told that Charles Lindberg landed his airplane on a field just east of Clarks Grove (about where Interstate 35 is now located). He walked up to the farmer’s residence and asked if he could have some water to drink. This story has been confirmed by those who lived on that farm some years back.

Clarks Grove offers a 9-hole Frisbee golf course which was installed two years ago and has two parks, Bob’s Park and Johnson Park, and also offers the Clarks Grove Executive Golf Course.

GenevaGeneva settled in 1855-56, was organized May 11, 1858. Its village had been named by Edwin C. Stacy, the first postmaster there and the first probate judge for the county, “in remembrance of Geneva, N.Y.,” whence the large adjoining lake and the township received the same name. It was incorporated November 24, 1889. The post office opened in 1856. As of the census of 2000, there were 449 people, and 184 households residing in the city.

EllendaleA great place to call home. In 1900 the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railroad came through our area on its way north to Minneapolis. Mr. Thomas H. Brown, the town site agent for the railroad, had chosen the Elling Ellingson farm as the location for a new town because it was half way between Albert Lea and Owatonna and had good farm land that could benefit from supplies brought in and produce shipped out on the railroad. The new town was to be named Ellendale in honor of the railroad president’s wife, Ellen Dale Ives, for the many humanitarian works she had done, especially among the railroad employees.

Ellendale Area Farmer’s Market Is held each Saturday from 9:00 – 11:00 am starting the first weekend in June thru the end of October. It is located next to the Municipal Liquor Store in Ellendale. Anybody who is interested in selling should contact Dan Sorum at 507-688-0514 or email [email protected].

Ellendale DaysThursday-Saturday, June 25-28, 2015Plan to attend this annual old-fashioned country town celebration - always good food and good fun for the whole family. Street dances, parade 3:00 pm on Saturday. Commercial Club’s Pork Chop Supper on Saturday at 5:00 pm. Lions Club Annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, serving 8:30 am - 1:00 pm. Lots of fun for everyone!

WE’VE GOT THE COLOR YOU WANT.

WellsOn the first day of July, 1869, Col. Clark Thompson along with H. W. Holly, and M. Conant staked out 160 acres as a town site of what was to become the village of Wells. The town was named in honor of Thompson’s wife, whose maiden name was Rebecca Wells. Wells holds the distinction of being the first railroad town in Faribault County. Today it is a thriving community with friendly residents who welcome visitors.

New Richland New Richland owes it origins to the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad which reached the area in 1877 and the Norwegian settlers who were attracted to the rich farmland of Waseca County. From its very beginnings, the founding fathers of New Richland worked toward the betterment of the community with an eye on progress and the promise of a bright future for all citizens. Merchants opened their doors and sold dry goods, medicine and drugs, furniture, coal, hardware, lumber, harness and leather goods, and more. The village supported a depot, two banks, two blacksmiths, three hotels, a school, a jeweler, a flour mill, a newspaper, several meat markets and grocery stores, a creamery, cheese factory, farm implements, Ford automobile dealership, cafes, poultry and egg factory, a movie theater and many other businesses.

ShoppingDowntown Albert Lea Visit Downtown Albert Lea and enjoy the area which is now more shopper and event friendly.

It is a pedestrian friendly area with open, wider sidewalks, ‘parklet’ areas at bumpouts, slower traffic via traffic calming measures, and better wayfinding for pedestrians and vehicles alike. With the new construction we preserved and enhanced the historic character of the downtown area and added plantings and energy efficient lighting. It created barrier free access to downtown, better accommodations for handicapped accessible parking, easier street crossings, access to buildings, etc. It is connected to Fountain Lake Park and brings more events into the downtown area with Williams Plaza, Water Street Plaza and the Farmer’s Market.

State ParkMyre-Big Island State Park Three miles southeast of Albert Lea on County Road 38 (Exit 11 on I-35). Hiking, biking, camping, wildlife watching, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and canoeing are popular activities enjoyed by the approximately 125,000 annual visitors. The trails take visitors around wet lowlands, oak savanna, and grasslands. The State Park is an oasis of natural diversity in a prairie landscape surrounded by agricultural land uses. The park marshes draw hundreds of waterfowl during migration. Special features of this region’s geologic, botanic and human history can be seen in this park. One of the most unique aspects of the park is the 116 acre Big Island, covered with maple/basswood forest. Another is the glacial esker located in the northeast section of the park.
