José L. Banda, Superintendent

August, 2015 It’s been said that “teaching is the hardest job you’ll ever love.” And it’s true: The challenges of teaching in a high-poverty urban district such as ours are many and can be difficult to tackle. Fortunately, the joys are many, too. Knowing that you are helping students learn and grow – and that you are contributing to our world becoming a little better – is the unsurpassed reward of teaching.

Because teaching is hard work, quality professional development is critical to your success and our success as a district. The difficulties of teaching can be made less so by educators coming together to learn best practices and share solutions to persistent classroom problems that prevent student success.

As such, I am pleased to present SCUSD’s 2015-2016 professional development catalogue. The workshops offered are opportunities to sharpen your pedagogy and develop new skills. I hope you are challenged and inspired by these opportunities, just as you challenge and inspire our students. By learning and improving together, we can truly chart a course to a better future for our students and ourselves.

Sincerely,

José L. Banda Superintendent

From the Desk of Dr. Iris Taylor Interim Chief Academic Officer

“Engaging in Professional Learning”

The illiterate of the 21st Century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn

Alvin Toffler

Now more than ever, the ability to engage in continuous learning, unlearning, and relearning is vital for thriving in the ever changing world that is the 21st Century. This is the world that we are preparing SCUSD students to inhabit. To ensure their preparedness, we must seamlessly weave this model of continuous learning into the fabric of our personal and professional lives.

The professional learning offerings outlined here are thoughtfully designed to provide a host of opportunities for us to continue in the process of becoming the literate persons described by Alvin Toffler. We have put together a variety of selections that we think will appeal to each of you. These sessions reflect the research-based model of professional learning we know is needed to bring about lasting and impactful change. The sessions engage educators in collaborative, inquiry-oriented learning over time.

We encourage you to take advantage of these professional learning opportunities and invite you to participate with a friend. Learning is always more enjoyable when we have someone who shares the experience. We look forward to the new school year and the opportunity to learn, unlearn, and relearn with you!

Iris Taylor, Ed.D. Interim Chief Academic Officer

From the Desk of Matt Turkie Interim Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction According to Richard Elmore, an eminent educational researcher from Harvard, there are only three ways to improve student learning at scale:

1) Raise the level of content that students are taught. 2) Increase the teachers’ skill & knowledge that they bring to teaching of that content 3) Increase the level of students’ active learning (engagement) of the content

The three points above are described as the Instructional Core and Elmore asserts that to raise student achievement, all three facets of the instructional core need to be raised.

One way that we are raising the bar at Sacramento City Unified School District is through our Professional Learning Series for administrators and teachers. Through our professional learning series, participants will be able to improve all three aspects of the instructional core and hence positively impact student learning.

As we move towards greater collaboration we are able to learn from one another, share best practices and become stronger as a district for the students and families we serve. I am honored to be a part of the learning community at Sacramento City Unified School District, and look forward to learning with you.

Sincerely,

Matt Turkie,

Interim Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction
