Becky Norris is in her third year as the head softball coach at Cleveland State.

In her first season at the helm, Norris guided the Vikings to a 24-20 overall record, including a berth in the Horizon League tournament after going 8-8 in the regular season. This was despite coming on-board in mid-August, just weeks before the spring season.

Last year, Norris led the Vikings to another berth in the League tournament. In her first two seasons at the help, Norris has guided three first team All-Horizon League performers, a pair of second team honorees and one all-newcomer team selection. In addition, Cynthia Woodard was named the 2015

Horizon League Player of the Year, the fourth player in program history to earn the honor.

Norris, who came to CSU with 17 years of collegiate coaching experience, was most recently the head coach at Indiana Tech, an NAIA school in Fort Wane, Ind. During her nine-year tenure with the Warriors (2005-2013), Norris guided the softball team to mul-tiple program firsts, continually raising the level of expectations and standards for the program.

In her first year with the program, Norris guided the Warriors to the highest winning percentage in program history and followed that up with the team’s first-ever postseason appearance following the 2007 season. In 2010 Indiana Tech posted a 30-win season for the first time, and bettered the mark the following year, achieving a 38-16 record (.704).

Norris, the 2013 Indiana Tech Coach of the Year, recorded her 200th win as a head coach during her eighth season with the team, finishing her stint with 229 total wins. Throughout her nine seasons, Norris coached 25 All-Conference players, seven All-Region players and one All-American.

Norris’ teams have also been successful off the field, as she had 13 Academic All-Conference players – the most in program his-tory – during the 2011 season and her teams have consistently maintained a GPA of 3.0 since her first year with the Indiana Tech program.

Prior to Indiana Tech, Norris spent one year as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State (2004), where the team achieved a 31-win season finishing third in the Sun Belt Conference and second in the conference tournament. She also spent four years at Eastern Illinois (2000-2003) assisting in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, running camps and clinics and coaching the bases.

Norris also had coaching stints at Rollins College (1999) and Maryville Univer-sity (1997-1998). While at Maryville, she helped guide the team to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title during the 1997 season.

Along with her collegiate coaching experience, Norris has spent the past seven years serving as the USA Athletes International head softball coach, traveling and coaching collegiate athletes at international competitions.

The St. Louis, Mo. native is actively involved with the National Fastpitch Coach-es Association, and has been honored as a Four Star Master Coach through the National Fastpitch Coaches College. In recent years she has served on the NAIA All-Region and All-American committees.

Norris was a two-sport athlete at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., play-ing softball and field hockey. She received a BA in English from Bellarmine in 1993, an MA in Teaching from Webster University in 1995 and an MS in Kinesi-ology with an emphasis in coaching fastpitch from Texas Woman’s University in 2006.

Lloydene Searle is in her third season as an assistant coach at Cleveland State, coming to CSU after serving with head coach Becky Norris at Indiana Tech.

While at Indiana Tech, Searle had a hand in helping the program to multiple firsts, continu-ally raising the level of expectations and standards for the program. She helped the team to the highest winning percentage in program history in her first season with the squad and followed that up with the team’s first-ever postseason appearance in 2007.

In 2010, Indiana Tech posted a 30-win season for the first time and bettered the mark the fol-lowing year, going 38-16 (.704).

In addition, she helped the team sustain success in the classroom with 13 student-athletes earning academic all-conference hon-ors in 2011 - the most in program history.

Searle began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Utah before moving on to Utah State. In her first year at the helm in 1981, Searle led Utah State to its second–straight national championship in softball, and the only back–to–back national cham-pionships in school history as USU posted a 5–1 record in the 1981 AIAW National Tournament including a 4–3 win against Cal State Fullerton in the championship game in Norman, Okla.

She led the team to a 34-12 record in 1981 and guided Utah State to national prominence over the next 17 years.

Searle served as the head coach at Eastern Illinois where she became the winningest coach in school history before joining Norris at Indiana Tech.

Searle, a graduate of Utah State University, was the first female to earn an athletic schol-arship at USU and competed in volleyball, basketball, and softball, earning honors such as Female Athlete of the Year while appearing on the Dean’s List.

After her collegiate career, she signed with the Women’s Professional Softball League, playing for the Phoenix Birds and the Bakersfield Aggies.

She earned her MBA in 2005 from Indiana Tech and majored in English and Physical Education at Utah State.

The 2009 softball season began in Las Cruces, N.M. and con-cluded in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the Vikings playing in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history. Along the way, CSU experienced several highs en route to winning 35 games, including a school-record 17 league games. The season began on Feb. 6, the earliest start day in program his-tory, with a 10-2 loss to Ohio State in the Troy Cox Invitational. Three more losses followed until the Vikings earned their first win of the season, 17-6, over UMKC. CSU headed south to the University of Georgia Invitational one week later, going 3-1, to place second. Following a two-week layoff, the Vikings traveled to the Oklahoma State Invitational where they went 2-3, including a thrilling 15-13 win over Northern Colorado on March 6. After sweeping a doubleheader at Dayton and splitting a twinbill at Marshall, the Vikings opened the Horizon League season with two wins in three games at Wright State. That began a streak that saw the Vi-kings win 11 of 13 constests. Both losses were by one run. Following a 3-2 loss at Loyola in the series opener, the Vikings stormed back to win the next two and followed that with a three-game sweep of Youngstown State. The Vikings lost some momen-tum the following weekend when UIC won two of three in Cleveland, all but assuring the Flames of the regular season title. Following a sweep of Kent State, CSU took all three games from Val-paraiso to earn the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Championship. The Vikings won their first three contests to advance to the champion-ship, but were dealt an 8-4 setback by UIC on May 7, setting up a win-ner-take-all game the following day. CSU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth before UIC rallied for two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth. Then with two outs in the seventh and runners on first and third, Sarah Clynes hit a line drive towards right center that Andrea Nagy dove for and caught to preserve the win and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. CSU fell to Notre Dame in a first round game, 3-1, and was eliminated by Miami (Ohio) the following day, 5-4, when Christa Coppus was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game. The Vikings reaped the benefits of their suc-cess as Amanda Macenko and Coppus were named to the all-league first team with Macen-ko repeating as Pitcher of the Year. Amanda Houchin, Shalyn Adams and Lia Gordon were each named to the all-league sec-ond team, while Mimi Mahon was voted to the all-newcomer team. In addition, Macenko was named to the All-Midwest Region team by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association.
