3 Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles Annual Report 2016
DeAR FRIenDS AnD SuppoRteRS,
For the past 25 years, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) has committed to revitalizing neighborhoods across Los Angeles and creating more access to affordable housing. More than 125,000 supporters have helped us build and repair over 1,000 homes locally and internationally. Since 1990, our volunteers have provided over 1 million service hours to help serve low-income families and individuals in need of decent housing. Locally, in partnership with supporters like you, we have helped nearly 4,000 Angelenos build brighter futures and new opportunities for themselves and their families.
In the last year, we are proud to say that we have built, rehabilitated and repaired 77 homes, in partnership with thousands of donors and volunteers. Our ReStores have helped to divert millions of pounds of materials from area landfills, while being an affordable source for home improvement materials for local residents and raising millions to support our mission to build homes, communities and hope.
Decent, affordable homes are the key to building strong families. In the past three years, more than half of adults in Los Angeles have made a tradeoff to cover their rent or mortgage. They have taken a second job, cut back on health care and healthy food, and moved to less safe neighborhoods. In the words of one of our own partner homebuyers, “Owning a house means safety, security and freedom to my family.”
Habitat LA’s work is evident as each home is being built; however, the true impact of our work can be seen years later through the changing landscape of our communities, the improvement of our children’s futures and the increased stability in the lives of our partner homeowners. Thank you for building alongside our partner homebuyers and being part of their journey towards a better future. We hope you continue to volunteer and donate to help us in Building a Greater Los Angeles!

tHe lozA FAMIly
Juan Loza, his wife, Gloria, and three sons, Nestor, Alejandro and Saul, shared a small two-bedroom apartment. Juan always dreamt of being able to own a home and provide stability for his family. The Lozas realized this dream in December 2015, when they received the keys to their new home in Los Angeles.
Juan has worked as a banquet waiter at a local university for 25 years and also makes it a priority to remain active in his church community. Gloria is very involved with school and community meetings. Nestor aspires to be an environmental engineer, and Alejandro would love to become a psychologist. Both are active in clubs at their colleges. Saul, the youngest, is a freshman in college pursuing mechanical engineering.
Juan and his family truly enjoyed their experience with Habitat LA. They met so many people while working on their sweat equity hours. “My experience with Habitat LA’s staff and volunteers has been excellent because they are all very nice and kind people. I will always be eternally grateful to Habitat LA.”
