Every year we consider this letter a brief “state of the station” update and we generally report how busy and productive we have been in the past fiscal year. But this year is different. It is no exaggeration to say that this year, and perhaps the one ahead, will likely go down in the Rocky Mountain Public Media archives as one of the most significant periods in the station’s history. It is a time of tremendous change and growth, capped off with the installation of a new CEO.

But first, let us begin by noting another major milestone, the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Rocky Mountain PBS. From our humble beginnings as a tiny station dedicated to local education to the national public media model we have become, there was much to spotlight as we enjoyed our anniversary through multiple outreach events. The centerpiece was a reception and exhibit at the Denver Public Library. The exhibit was on display for over four months and was enthusiastically received by fans of all ages. Digging through our voluminous archives to create an accurate and thorough portrait of our 60-year legacy was an arduous task and we have our dedicated and passionate volunteers to thank for this top-notch tribute.

Our public radio station, KUVO, also celebrated a landmark achievement—their 30th anniversary. We capped off KUVO’s 30th anniversary at our annual Live at the Vineyards celebration at Balistreri vineyards, where Grammy®-award winner Dianne Reeves kept the crowd singing and dancing well into the night. We also commemorated KUVO’s rich history by looking to the future through our 30 Under 30 series. This series spotlighted Colorado’s young musicians through intimate interviews and performances, earning each musician a spot on our yearly CD compilation!

The RMPBS News team was in full throttle this past year, working hard to create impactful local content. We were particularly proud of two original series dedicated to exploring the issues of race and education in Colorado, respectively titled “Race in Colorado” and “Standing in the Gap.” These efforts and more were recognized with three Emmys® and multiple awards from the Colorado Broadcasters Association.

The launch of our multi-year capital campaign to build an innovative and collaborative media hub in Arapahoe Square was another notable achievement for the organization. Once completed, this state-of-the-art building will not only revitalize an overlooked section of downtown Denver, but will also serve as a national hub for the evolution of public media, technological development, and the incubation of ideas around public-service journalism.

Transition and change are necessary when dynamism and innovation are valued as critical building blocks to the future of an organization. After months of discussion and planning, and with the full support of the network’s Board of Directors, Amanda Mountain was named the new President and CEO of Rocky Mountain PBS, effective Feb. 3, 2017. Amanda has served in a variety of key leadership positions in the organization for the past eight years and has worked in media for nearly two decades. She is well-known and respected throughout the organization and state, and we are thrilled to announced her appointment to President and CEO.

As we turn to this new and exciting chapter, we could not be more proud of “the state of the station” and its new leadership. That is the message we most want to impart. We have each been honored to serve this station and its viewers, and we look forward with great excitement to watching the next 60 years unfold!

“While on a vacation, Finn wowed his family and fellow vacationers when he successfully identified a sponge as something that turtles eat; a fact he learned by watching “Wild Kratts.”

He wasn’t even yet four years old but already he had learned something that he retained and was able to use and that’s totally due to PBS KIDS.

– Dilek Eccles, Finn’s Mother and RMPBS Member

Ranked as the greatest jazz station in the world for the second consecutive year by The Telegraph, KUVO has been a fundamental component in the community for over 30 years.

I listen to jazz every morning on KUVO, it’s my daily routine. One of my favorite parts is I don’t get blasted with a bunch of commercials and it’s music and it’s intelligent music.

– Dan Yolles, KUVO High School Series Participant

PBS LearningMedia showcases America’s #1 Educational Media Brand for access to thousands of innovative, standards-aligned digital resources, compelling student experiences, and professional development opportunities. Rocky Mountain PBS actively contributes locally produced content to this database that Colorado educators and students can take advantage of.

One of these educators is middle-school teacher Hannah Ewert-Krocker, who utilizes “Colorado Experience” episodes and accompanying curriculum in her history classes.

Having a digital media source that’s publicly and very, very easily accessible is an incredible way for everyone to learn.

“Race in Colorado” is an initiative geared toward highlighting inequalities in Colorado and fostering growth and diversity. The project resulted in three documentaries, a series of in-depth reports from RMPBS News, community screenings, and personal vignettes. The three documentaries all focused on different areas of society: health, justice, and education. “Precious Loss” examines the role of race in Colorado’s healthcare system, particularly infant mortality; “A Sentenced Life” investigates the effects of race in Colorado’s criminal justice system; and “Standing in the Gap” examines the history of federally mandated busing in the Denver Public School system and the devastating achievement gaps that exist today. “Standing in the Gap” won a Heartland Emmy® for Outstanding Public/Current/Community Affairs Program in 2016 and was named Best News Special or Public Affairs Special by the Colorado Broadcasters Association.

As someone who experienced Denver’s educational achievement gap firsthand, MiDian Holmes provided an essential perspective to the documentary and was a steadfast supporter of the documentary and its subsequent community outreach.

The outreach of ‘Standing in the Gap’ was extremely important. It brought the conversation to the table. It also empowered action. And now you have an opportunity to connect and say ‘what are we going to do about it?’ When you talk about a public broadcasting station that is going to simply bring the truth and the reality without the agenda, that’s the reason why it’s important. We’ve got to be able to have a platform and an outlet that we can give the honest truth to. It secures our voice.

– MiDian Holmes, “Standing in the Gap” participant and RMPBS viewer

Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO are grateful to our

73,000+ members and over 300collaborative community partners.

1,600+ elementary, middle and high school students participate in “Super School News” (800+ students),

StoryMakers (600+ students), and “Matchwits” (50+ schools) each year.

If all members stood together, they would fill the square mileage of Rocky Mountain National Park (415 mi2).

If each student represented a mile, they’d exceed the length of the Colorado River!

Over 17,000 Colorado teachers and

students are registered users of Rocky

Mountain PBS LearningMedia.

More than 18,000 children, and

parents attended this year’s three RMPBS

KIDS Fun Fests across the state.

If each person represented a page in a standard textbook, they would equal nearly 30 textbooks.

The amazing, hardworking volunteers of RMPBS

and KUVO worked 10,390+ hours,

the equivalent to over $207,870.

In that time, you could fly around the world nearly 365 times.

That’s 1.25x the elevation of Mt. Elbert, Colorado’s highest peak!

Everything we do at Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO is thanks to the generous financial support of individuals, foundations, and businesses that underwrite programming. In fact, more than 90% of our funding comes from you. Whether you support us because of programming and in-depth, investigative journalism through Rocky Mountain PBS or unparalleled jazz on KUVO, we are grateful for all you do. Thank you.
