Level 5 exemplar Comments The candidate’s answers show comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the facts, concepts and principles in the Biology curriculum. He/she demonstrated proficient skills in questions related to scientific investigation, such as identifying features shown in photomicrographs and relating them to the knowledge learned (Paper 1B Q.4); and identifying assumptions for experimental design and proposing modifications of the design to control other variables (Paper 1B Q.7 (a) & (b)). He/she competently applied knowledge to solve problems involving familiar (Paper 1B Q.2, Q.3(b) and Q.5(a); Paper 2 Q.1(a) and Q.4(b)(i)&(ii)) and unfamiliar situations (Paper 1B Q.9 and Q.10; Paper 2 Q.4(a) and 4(b)(iii)). For questions related to data analysis, he/she showed competence in identifying trends and related inferences (Paper 1B Q.8), selecting relevant data to support an argument (Paper 1B Q.9(d)(i) and 10(c)). In essay type questions (Paper 1B Q.11), he/she was able to select relevant knowledge and use scientific terminology to communicate ideas coherently and effectively in the essay and evaluate the credibility of claims using related knowledge.
