Ben Fanelli: Ben is an ex OHL Captain with the Kitchener Rangers. At 16 years of age, he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury during an OHL game and was told he would never play sports again. After two years of recovery, he defied the odds and returned to play for the Kitchener Rangers for three more seasons. Ben was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year in the OHL and CHL in his 2012/13 season, attended main camp with the New York Rangers and was named captain in his final season with the Kitchener Rangers.

Ben played against Mark Scheifele when Mark was playing for the Barrie Colts and is now assistant coach of the men’s hockey team at the University of Waterloo, the Head of Student Athlete Development at Victus Academy, Director of The EMPWR Foundation and also runs a fitness program that aims to make fitness more attainable to all ages and experience levels call 40 Conditioning Inc.

The EMPWR Foundation: After deciding to move on from playing the game of hockey, Ben has started an organization called The EMPWR Foundation. EMPWR is a program that aims to inspire and inform the sport culture, advance the research and empower individuals to recover following brain injury.

Ben’s impactful story is one kids and parents won’t want to miss! He will discuss his personal journey through injury and recovery and speak to the positive impact EMPWR plans to have on head injury in sport.

Jorie will help parents & kids become savvy with sports nutrition by learning the science in a practical setting. The sessions will go beyond the basics of nutrition while keeping the “how to” practical and attainable!

During her sessions Jorie will discuss the importance of hydration and fueling for performance, and will provide a variety of samples and engaging demonstrations that will teach kids how to make their own sports drinks, energy bites and how to put together a nutritional travel kit. Parents & kids will also get to view a Supermarket Smarts Grocery Store Tour which will provide helpful tips on how to read nutritional labels and fill your grocery cart with the best foods to fuel young athletes.
