Principal’s Message All 625 students at Kingsville Primary are fortunate to be IB Learners. They attend a school which is both a well regarded Victorian Government school and, one authorised to offer a program of the International Baccalaureate Organization. That program is the “Primary Years Programme”, a curriculum framework for international primary education.

Kingsville began its journey to authorisation back in 2006 and became fully authorised in 2009. That required school council, staff, students and community at that time to make a commitment to the philosophy and requirements of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. We have worked collectively since then to ensure that the PYP is not something that is ‘done’ so to speak at a particular time or, is seen as separate in any way to our core practice. Rather, it has been successfully embedded into our daily practice and should be evident in all aspects of how we live and learn together as a community. In 2017 as an authorised school we took part in a PYP evaluation. This was a valuable experience and now in 2018 work undertaken will help inform the DET school review which is taking place over the next 3 weeks. The independent reviewer and the review team during this time will visit classrooms across the school, speak to the children and the teachers and, gain an insight into instructional practices at KPS. Children will have the opportunity to talk about their learning, goal setting, assessment and, give examples where they have a voice in decision making. I know that our confident and articulate students will enjoy this experience and take advantage of the opportunity. Have a look Inside the front door there is a large display board with a heading of ‘At Kingsville we strive to be’. This provides key information about the PYP program and also displays the Kingsville Primary School mission statement and the IB mission statement. There is also a very attractive framed Certificate of Authorization – Certifical d’autorisation. I ask all parents to view this when they come into the school, pause and take a few minutes to refresh their knowledge about what we are collectively working towards and striving to be. Student Attitudes to School Survey Well done to our students in Years 4, 5 and 6, the results of the DET Student Opinion Survey (Attitudes to School) they participated in earlier in the year have been received. I am very pleased to say that there are improvements across all areas in 2018 with highlights in the areas of Social Engagement, School Connectedness, Student Voice and Agency and Sense of Inclusion. These saw improvements of between 22 – 27%. Teachers at these levels will be providing feedback to the students. Parent Opinion Survey 2018 In the newsletter last week information was provided regarding the Parent Opinion Survey. In 2018 180 Kingsville parents form the random sample who have been asked to log in and complete the survey. Due to the way the government designs this survey around 15% of parents who have been selected this year will also have been included in previous year samples. There will also naturally be some parents who will not be included in any year of their 7 years or more of involvement at KPS however, hopefully that will be a small number. So, if you were in the sample last year and are included again this year we are hopeful you will take the time to respond again. As of Thursday 2nd August, 24 parents had responded to the survey.

Please note The survey does not seek opinion across all areas of school experience for parents. The focus is to seek opinion on measures of set areas being school climate and student engagement and effective teaching practice known to influence student engagement and student outcomes. In line with this statements are provided by DET across a range of Domains being –

Parent Community Engagement

School Ethos and Environment

Student Cognitive Engagement

Student Development

Safety

Connection and Progression

Parents in the sample in any year respond to the DET statements on a given scale. These responses are then later in the year reported to the school by the company contracted to carry out this work by DET. The information is then used by the leadership of the school in reviewing policy, practices, resourcing, staffing and determining components of the Annual Implementation Plan and specific programs and budgets for each year. This of course also links in with the undertakings of School Council as they review programs and initiatives, make decisions and ultimately pass the yearly budget which supports all undertakings. When parents respond to the opinion survey they are not putting down personal suggestions about school practice or policy but, are recording a rating against the DET determined statements. Parents can be assured however that interrogation so to speak takes place each year and the trends of responses are also considered for the four year period within the school review process. Impact and response to parent opinion responses and trends can be evidenced in the everyday work, undertakings and school improvement actions that are spoken about and illustrated in daily practice throughout the year. They can also be linked to information that goes to school council from the work of sub committees and working parties and will be considered collectively in a range of governance decision making. Gaining a satisfactory level of responses to the survey each year is very important. In 2017, 194 Kingsville parents were included in the sample and there were 81 responses. This is seen to be relatively sound response when compared to results across Victoria. However, these 81 responses were out of a total of nearly 600 families so, the opinions were really representing only around 13% of Kingsville parents. The 2017 survey however did reveal that 86% of parents who responded were satisfied with their child’s schooling overall. In 2017 across the State, the overall satisfaction score was 81.5% in Primary schools.

Grade 2 Sleepover Update This year Scienceworks have informed us that they have significantly reduced the number of sleepovers they are allowing at the venue. The result of this is that Kingsville will be returning to the previous school camping program, which prior to the Scienceworks experience ran successfully for many years. This program runs on a Friday night and this year it will be on Friday 9th November. So, please mark the date in your calendar and further information in regards to the times, cost and the program for the night will be sent to parents later in the term. Grade 6 Canberra Trip 2018 Students in Year Six, from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Over the course of the five day trip, they visited Parliament House, Old Parliament House, The War Memorial, The Australian Electoral Education Centre, The Royal Australian Mint, Government House, The National Capital Exhibition and Questacon. The students were able to develop a greater depth of knowledge and understanding of their current unit of inquiry into ‘How We Organise Ourselves’. The experiences were well received by the students and their level of engagement in their learning was impressive. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Blagma Veljanoska, Leading teacher

Foundation: 100 Days of School Last Friday was a very special occasion for the Foundation students – we celebrated 100 days at school!

The milestone allowed us to reflect on the incredible learning that has already occurred for all of our 97

Foundation students’ start to school.

We began our celebrations by showing the school our impressive counting skills during our Assembly

performance. Each class enjoyed a variety of reading, writing, maths, arts and STEM activities based

around the number 100. The students also relished the opportunity to share a range of items brought in

from home that represent 100, including bags of 100 lollies or 100 toys, the number 100 in various

languages, books that contained 100 dinosaurs, cars or machines, posters, written stories about 100,

necklaces made with 100 beads or pieces of pasta.

Thank you to all Foundation families for supporting this event and celebration.

Well done, Foundation students on a marvellous start to school.

(please see photos of this celebration at the end of this newsletter)
